    Early Stevie did not have any vocal training so a tremendous amount of strain until Robin Snyder, her best friend and speech therapist, began coaching her to utilize her voice so that she didn't strain. Tragically, Robin passed away from cancer...and that's another story.

    You must listen to studio versions of Dreams and Rhiannon since they are incredibly produced and hold up to today. These old live versions are not of the greatest quality and highlight the guitar more than give clarity to Stevie's vocals and do not do justice of why the band was so successful! If you want to hear one of the greatest and longest solos in rock history that Lindsey Buckingham ever did with Fleetwood Mac, check out the song "I'm so afraid" - a song that Lindsey sang solo in Fleetwood Mac. This version is out of this world. ua-cam.com/video/6OrtLxsqSic/v-deo.html It really shows one reason he is so underrated as one of the best rock guitarists of all time. He does not use a pick, he only has a unique fingerplucking style and that in itself is legendary, plus, he doesn't read music, he plays by ear and feel, and produced their best selling albums with such mastery without even reading music. He's truly a musical genius!

    Stevie could still sing in a high, clear voice when she wanted to at this stage. She does on the album cut.
    Buckingham was still learning to play lead electric guitar. He didn't even play with a pick, but adapted his finger picking style to the electric. Soloing was something he said didn't come naturally to him.

    Sorry more comments. Lindsey Buckingham was one great guitar player. Not the caliber of SRV but had some of the best solos in his era. I'm So Afraid comes to mind which in my opinion his best of that was in The Dance tour live. Also unlike others he rarely if ever strummed he was a picker which adds to his amazement. Amazing fast hands.

      I’ve seen Fleetwood Mac numerous times, as well as Lindsey’s solo shows. Not using a pick makes it tougher to play, I can vouch for that as guitarist myself. It wasn’t uncommon to see streaks of blood on the neck of Lindsey’s guitar.

  • @wazza1085
    @wazza1085 Рік тому +3

    When you get around to doing a reaction to 'The Chain', which you definitely will, do yourself a massive favour and make sure it's the live version they performed in 1982 in LA.
    In case you're not aware, there were personal relationships between different members of the band, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham having split up rather acrimoniously from one of those relationships.
    Buckingham and Nicks are basically just at each other the whole way through the song, while the other members of the group just keep playing, but they look as if they're all thinking "Oh god, here we go again".
    The electricity between them was palpable. Incredibly enough, give one hell of a performance despite all the emotion, or maybe even because of it. Check it out, you won't regret it.

    You should check out her slow version of this. It's more impactful, in my opinion. Same with 'Gold Dust Woman'. She'll start off slow, emotional; almost an acoustic version, really - then pick up the pace through to the end. Helluva singer.

    I remember also being very surprised at how light and high she sang on some Fleetwood Mac songs, especially because like you, I was first introduced to her by her 80's pop rock songs. Her vocal quality changed a lot for that solo work. Part of the reason is, I think, that by then, unfortunately, her drug use and cigarette smoking affected her voice and made it raspier anf harder for her to sing as high as she's gotten older. When she was first in Fleetwood Mac she had a soprano range and her head voice was very light and airy and sometimes almost a pure crystalline clear quality. Later in her solo work, she mostly sang in more of an alto range, not seeming to sing those higher notes anymore, but using more of her chest voice to get a harder edgier deeper bad ass pop rock sound to her voice and music. She always had that edge to her and you can hear it come out on some Fleetwood Mac tracks, but her famous raspiness really came into fruition a few years later in her solo work. As she's gotten older her voice has gotten deeper and even more raspier if hear her work in the late 90's and early 2000's. You hear this with a lot of aging rockers whose voices get raspier and lose some of their range- It highlights one more reason not to smoke or do drugs- it can damage your voice!

    You might want to react to "You Can Go Your Own Way" and "The Chain" with Stevie singing lead and Christine McVie's ballad, "Songbird" - all from Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumors' album. I'm mostly familiar with the album versions of these songs but I've seen a few videos with decent audio.

    • @caps689
      @caps689 Рік тому

      Go Your Own Way is a Lindsey Buckingham song and The Chain is at most a co-lead for Stevie with more lines sung by Buckingham who drives it vocally and musically. I will always recommend the 1982 Mirage Tour The Chain - it's wild, explosive and a bit insane. It's so fun to watch it live (on YT) though in terms of audio it's better on the Mirage Deluxe - Live At The Forum - The Chain (on YTl)

    Stevie Nicks was only one lead singer of Fleetwood Mac. The rule with Fleetwood Mac that whoever wrote the song, sung the song. With three songwriters and thus three singers, Fleetwood Mac had a wide range of sounds.

    Love the reaction and Stevie and FM are just... epic.
    So, a guitar player I love precisely because he does what I think of as groove solos - meaning it fits the general feel and.timing of the song first and foremost- instead of virtuoso style solos that make me think of hair metal. Dan Auerbach, front man and lead guitarist of The Black Keys. He also has a few solo records, is in the band The Arcs and owns and produces for his studio Easy Eye Records. If you can, watch their music videos because they are effing hilarious. I would start with Tighten Up - their breakout hit. Gold on the Ceiling, Lonely Boy, I Got Mine (live versions are better), Psychotic Girl (studio version, it's a whole.mood). Or Dan's solo my all time favorite is Heartbroken In Disrepair. He's won as many Grammys as the Beatles is you count his ones for producing and performing. I would love it if you checked out some of these, and it sounds like you'd appreciate his style

    I reckon Stevie was channelling Janis Joplin at the end there. Fabulous song... I love Fleetwood Mac they really defined my young adult life, every woman wanted to look and sound like Stevie Nicks. She was so young here and still developing her vocal style. She also reminds me of Suzie Quattro... If you haven't heard of Suzie Quattro then definitely be great to see a reaction for.... Thank you and peace to you too ☺️

    This was recorded in 1976. It's actually not a good recording. You should have reviewed Fleetwood Mac's performance of this song on The Midnight Special from 1976. Much, much better sound quality and video. Also, you should compare these vocals to Fleetwood Mac of 1986 - ten years later and check out Stevie's vocals - especially on "Seven Wonders"! As much as I love "Rhiannon", "Dreams" is still my favorite song of all time (and yes, I felt the same way in 1977).
