My old Stihl chainsaw loses power and dies when warm. How to fix! (056AV Bosch Ignition failure)

  • Hey Everyone!!!
This is a video I have been wanting to make for a long time... and I'm happy to report the repair was a success!!! My Stihl 056AV is ready to rip now, complete with 24" bar.
This is a step-by-step how-to replace the Bosch ignition on my Stihl 056AV chainsaw. This ignition needs to be either repaired or replaced, and you'll know when the saw starts to bog down / loses power when warm. It will also work with several other models with the Bosch ignition, which fails over time.
Here is the original thread on Arboristsite.com with the step-by-step repair if you wish to save some money and do the repair yourself:
    www.arboristsite.com/threads/...
Here is the (almost) plug and play part which I ordered from the below website. Keep in mind you need to use the website to find the exact replacement for your saw.
    shop.saegenspezi.de/electroni...
If you have any questions, their customer service was awesome!!!
    Hope this video helps,
    -Dave

Hey Dave, thank you for this video. I've just fitted this kit (the coil and points version) to my very first saw, a Stihl 08s. Chasing bog down, I had rebuilt everything, gaskets, seals, carb, compression tested (piston and cylinder in great condition), and finally she is running really strong now, no more bog down, way stronger than before the old ignition failed. Using a spark tester I could see the spark died out as the throttle was applied. Prior to the fix, the saw would start cold, some condensate would come from the exhaust, presumably from incomplete combustion, and the saw would bog when applying throttle, eventually when warm it became impossible to start. After changing ignition which really was plug and play as in the video, the saw fired immediately, and with some carb tuning runs better than I have ever had it running in 20 years.

Well Dave, a day late! Just picked up MS441C , it had the same symptoms and they replaced ignition system and the carburetor and fuel cap! She be purring right now! They are so perfect with the right tuning! I like using the tachometer, seems like you can get the carburetor closer then by ear.

Hey Jim! Totally different ignition system, so it’s all good! I have a 441C as well, but it has that new fan-dangled M-Tronic carb. I have a big bore kit on it thst I’m not happy with so I’m going to down grade in size but go back to an OEM cylinder and meteor piston. That video will be up soon!

Dave please keep us updated on this saw, I have an 032 same shape and I can’t get the chain to stop running at idle like yours and it won’t pull over with the chain brake on due to crazy high compression. I’ve stripped and cleaned the clutch, replaced the clutch springs, tuned it, turned the idle screw down so much it stalls, tried with and without a bar on, different chain tensions and it runs beautifully except for the turning chain. I’m thinking now maybe it’s sucking in air somewhere or I need to try a new carby, any thoughts ?

I have 4 Stihl 041 chainsaws and 3 of them have Sweden SEMS and one saw has a Bosch German ignition system. The ignition systems are bad in all saws. This Bosch ignition looks exactly like my 041 German coil ignition in one of my 041 Stihl saws. Would this work using the German flywheel in a 041 saw? If so, how much do they cost?

Same symptoms and fix with a more modern saw? I have a jonsered 2050 (husq’45)that comes out swinging, then bogs and dies when warmed up. But it will idle fine and restart fine after sitting for a minute. I think I have ruled out fuel/vapour because farting around with the choke doesn’t keep it going.
Thanks for the great vids and enjoy that beefy saw this spring!

    • @DavesSmallEngines

Hey Sean - I’m wondering if it isn’t a tank vent issue? When it dies, put the saw on its side and see if you hear any hissing when you open the fuel tank. If you do, it’s likely the tank vent. Please let me know!

Actually in the middle of this very same saw, even was on their website looking to buy ignition, they have 2 up on there, wasn't sure which to go as one says will not replace SEM, Im only novice but loving it, even made a puller for flywheel, damaged threads hitting with a hammer(nó need for a brass hammer now 🔨😂) but question is, saw start 2nd/3rd pull every time, sit idle for ever, reving up nó problem, but as soon as it hit wood bogging stall out and backfire through carb, is this all because of ignition? Research and couple old guys said timing 🙈 I'm not there yet on know how but interesting! I'm not giving up on this saw! Thanks for video. Subscribed 👍

just started working on one of these , got it running on gas thru the carb but was left with gas in it years ago. cleaned carb and found nothing wrong so started it again and noticed a loose jug so tore into it , it was missing 1 cylinder bolt and a second one was loose along with both muffler bolts loose , got that all fixed and now have no spark, crazy to think it ran better with 1 missing bolt and 3 loose ones then after it was corrected ., no wonder the impulse wasnt triggering the car , when all the air was exiting the crankcase thru the gasket , a new coil maybe now???
