Is this an issue when the saw is stored and sitting in the upright position? If so I have a Remington Outlaw RM4620 saw that does the same thing. I bought it brand new and used it the first time, stored it away and went back the next day and all my bar oil had leaked out.
It ain’t the space shuttle. It’s a chainsaw. I just don’t get why some people thumbs down 👎 good & free repair information. I appreciate the work that goes into putting videos together.
I've seen this video before, but why not again. Best evidence of sanity I can see from our northern neighbor is this site. Thanks again, Steve. Love the site.
When I fire up the BBQ, the wife asks me how long the burgers will take. My answer is two beers. One for the warm up the other to cook them. Perfect burgers everytime. Why rush it eh? Really appreciate the technical consultations that you produce. Sounds better than tips eh? Cheers from Massawippi QC. CANADA. bud!
you are a treasure man! i solved a oil leak at a hitachi cs 51eap at ventilation valve- a piece of rubber. most of time oil leaking on my pants rather guide bar. i made a tread, i screw a bolt, maximise the oil at pump and start engine, throtle max and chain spitting oil on a piece of wood. thanks again, i have to buy a coffee to you!
Steve, first off, thank you for this video. I wanted to tell you that the orange plastic plug can also be found on some of the mid-size Stihl chainsaws, or at least it was there on the old ones. I have a 1993 Stihl 029, 54.1 cc, called the "Farm Boss" back then -- today's Farm Boss (the 271) is a bit smaller, 50.2 cc, but has similar performance, apparently. The current 291 is closer in engine size (55.5 cc). Anyway, my old 029 has had a slow oil-leak for years. After seeing this video, I checked, and sure enough, it has the orange plastic plug, and it was almost out of its hole. I tried pressing it back in, but after only a couple hours run-time it was backing out again. I ordered the little set-screw from my local Stihl repair shop (...and you were right, they didn't even know about this problem). I installed the set screw, with one thread visible, and the oil leak stopped...BUT the set-screw wasn't very tightly held, and after a few days working on winter blow-downs, it had worked it's way out almost another full thread. I removed it, cleaned the hole and the screw with some non-chlorinated brake cleaner, replaced the screw with just a tiny drop of blue LocTite, and it has stayed fixed for the last month of work. Problem solved. Thank you. One last question: I used engine degreaser for years to get rid of all the oil-soaked sawdust (...yeah, I'm a bit OCD about getting it really clean), but I didn't like using water to rinse, so I switched to brake-cleaner (non-chlorinated to protect the plastic). Last year I grabbed a can of (what I thought was) non-chlorinated brake cleaner, but it was the chlorinated variety. I thought maybe I'd ruined the saw. But to my surprise, it didn't seem to do any damage to the cover-assembly or any of the other plastic parts. So was I just lucky? I really liked that it cleaned better, and evaporated instantaneously, unlike the non-chlorinated stuff. I'd like to keep using it, but I worry that long-term use could damage the saw. What say you, Steve?
I enjoy your videos tremendously. I'm a visual learner and your videos are the perfect learning venue for me. I watched your "10 worst comments" video and was so disappointed in those comments. I think you're doing a super job and I am so grateful for all you're doing to assist us DIY guys to learn ways to be self reliant. I hope you continue the videos. By the way, Abe was right. You can't please all the people all the time. John Fletcher
I haven’t used my saw for about two months. I pulled it out off the shelf and oil everywhere. This helped me a lot and thanks. I’m going to take my time to fix and clean. 2 beers 👍
Oh Steve, You really crack me up the way you include the beer thing as a crutial step in your repairs. giggle, giggle!! I have enjoyed watching several of your videos and appreciate the helpful info. And yes the beer does help when those tense moments arise!! Keep up the good work!!
The funny thing my cousin and had that conversation about his Stihl saw leaking out chain oil two days prior to watching this video. I was scrolling through youtube to see what would be interesting to watch and what do you know this video was staring back at me. Thank you
I quit drinking beer several years ago. However I think I could down one jusr to fix my oil leak on my Stihl chainsaw. Gonna get the part this afternoon. Thanks for the video and the info!
A great thank you, Steve. Most dealers know nothing about this 000 953 1001 solution. I had this problem (dry chain plus oily chainsaw and floor), which ruined my chain, my bar and I don't know if the piston /segments also... The solution proposed by the dealer was to make a short iron cillinder to obturate the hole. What I did instead was taking a M6 allen screw, shortening it and tapering the threads at the end. It solved the problem. Unfortunately I didn't watch your vid by this time. Your information is so needed! (even for dealers). Many people is complaining of this problem. I thought this issue affected just to my model (MS 230), but I see this is not the case.
Your right! When I took mine to a local Stihl Dealer, he said yep it’s gonna do that, nothing you can do. Thank you, I’m so tired of having my carry case with oil in the bottom.
Thank you for your video!! I saw a bunch of oil line and oil cap replacement videos, but my little saw already had the oil tank line replaced and its not leaking from the fill cap. My saw will leak out while the saw is not running just sitting in the case. It will leak out the entire tank full until its empty. I will try this now. Thanks again!!
RAYYYYY NEARRRRR BEERRRRRRRRR! You're the man Steve. Never fail to learn some valuable info when I perruse your channel, and yes ,I freely admit that I own 2 baby Stihls.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been having this leaking oil problem for years with my Stihl and have told the Stihl repairman about it every time I have taken it to the shop for other reasons. It hasn't been in the shop a lot but I have told them and its never has been fixed or has been fixed to stop leaking. I will now look at that place on my saw myself and maybe this has been my trouble. Thanks for this video. I have had my Stihl 20 years plus and its been one of the best investments I ever made.
Once again Steve to the rescue.... Watched my buddy pull out his ms170 from its case 2 days ago and the case was swimming in oil and the saw was horrendously soaked in oil... he just wiped it off and put some oil in it and went about his business... When i asked him what the hell is wrong he just said its been leaking for 15 years and still works so meh... i couldn't believe it... My chainsaws are SPOTLESS. I use them hard when i use them but they are gleaming before they go back to their storage cases. So i just happened upon this video and voila! I shall be fixing his MS170 tomorow! If I'm ever out in BC im taking Steve out for steak and beers...
Thank you for this video. I have been trying to fix this issue with my saw for weeks. You are correct about the dealers not reading there bulletin 🤦♂️ I found this part on amazon using the part number you listed and have it on the way. Thanks a million 😊
Oil caps and oil lines off the pump I have seen pretty often. I tried to find a plug at an industrial supply house and no go. Get the part from Stijl as I have also cracked the plastic around the plug. Your in good company Steve! Thanks for the video’s, always great. Mike OUT!
Thanks a lot, Steve. I just bought a Ms 210 from a guy for 30 bucks and it looks like new. It was leaking bar oil and I knew it should be an easy fix. You just showed me how easy it was. Thank you so much. I love your channel.
Thanks Steve! I have a MS 170 and it has leaked since new, usually into the bottom of the chain saw case. Don’t notice it until the next time I use my saw, pull it from the case and there is a puddle of oil in the bottom. Steve, this is an awesome video, content bang on! Just became a new subscriber. Thanks buddy.
I'm from Australia Steve, so I have always loved your beer time measure!! We have a camp cooking guy over here who cooks in the camp oven based on x number of beers. Cheers mate.
Great vid. My old mans 180 has been leaking since new. 4 or 5 years now. The dealer replaced a few parts and never found the leak. I'll be checking it tomorrow with a beer. 🍻 Cheers
This was a revelation! I've had a little MS180 mini-boss for years and it's the worst chainsaw I've ever owned. It's been leaking oil since almost as long as I've had it but I didn't bother doing anything about it since it mostly sits in the garage. Thing always needs worked on, won't cut even with a new chain, no power.......pain in the butt. I'll stick with my Huskies.....they are the best saws I own. Thanks for the video.....you have motivated me to put a little more tlc into the Stihl and give it some more use and see what happens.
Man this vedio helped me out a lot I never take anything to the shop I’m a mechanic but I couldn’t finger out in my head what wood go there and the part when you gave the part number that helped a lot because the people working at my local Stijl dealer they won’t help help you at all thank you really enjoyed your vedio
I’m thinking this may be my Stihl issue. I have a 194T that has been used lightly since new. I noticed that it was slinging a thin trail of oil onto my log, and the butt end of my Stihl under the carb is glistening. Let me check… Thank you for your continued, learned assistance. 👍🏼
Excellent video as always! I have a HT-KM pole pruner attachment that leaks oil bad when not in use. I’ve cleaned it thoroughly and cannot figure out why it’s leaking. Would you mind doing a video on that model?
My little ms211 has been leaking almost since new and I could never seem to get it figured out. If this is the problem I will be eternally grateful. Thanks Steve !!!!!👍👍👍
Thanks for the video. Yup that missing plug was the problem on the 025. A trip to the hardware store for a 6 mm x 6 mm x1 set screw for a buck 19 did the trick. I left a thread or 2 exposed as well. My bar is lubed and ready to go ; )
Thanks Steve. You are right on bullseye. Thanks for sharing inside technical bulletin of Stihl. Very fact that most of the dealer or technicians never read or update the knowledge. Keep up the great service to mankind. Wish you great success and prosperity. Thanks again.
Thanks Steve great video. I have a Stihl MS 311 which is set up differently to the one in this video.Does the 311 still have the small hole in which to insert the plug and if so how do I get at it? Cheers from OZ.
My old 036 has leaked bar oil since it was new back in 1994. I just assumed that it was normal. It’s been a great saw. Cut a lot of firewood with it over the years and it’s never even had a carb kit put in it. It Stihl runs like a beast but it sure makes a mess inside the plastic case I keep it in.
In the Copier Repair Business, we call it a TSB--Technical Service Bulletin!!! Excellent Info!!! I got a Stihl chainsaw of this vintage and it seems to have leaked oil in the orange carry case!!! I'll definitely have to check on this!!! PS--I picked up my chainsaw to do cleanup after Hurricane Katrina!...an Excellent Piece of Kit!!!
Once again ...great tech info and entertainment all in one superb edition. I knew you would have the answer to all the oil pooled in the tailgate of my 6x4 Big Country. Now I will have to check to see if my Echo 310 has the same issue allowing all its oil to pool in the same tailgate. I have learned this as well. If half a can of C2 H5 02 (ethyl alcohohol) is enough for you it will take a full can or a can and a half for me to get it done as time is the issue as I have. Great stuff Steve!
Great videos!! Question..I have a new stihl farmboss ms271 with about 2 hrs. on it. It leaks quite a bit of bar oil when sitting in the case for a week. It is not leaking from the cap it's coming from the oil outlet behind the bar. My ms251 doesn't leak a drop. any help would be appreciated thank you...
I have a little Homelite that i picked up for 10 bucks with a case. The guy said it didnt run. Started up right away almost and it leaks like crazy. Hope this helps!!
I have used 1/4" set screws to fix them. I tap the hole with a tap I have marked at 3/16" deep. When the screw starts get harder to screw in. I go a 1/8 turn an stop. It works great
This is weird! My MS250 has been leaking oil which mixes with sawdust and seems to get into everything and gum things up. I decided to clean everything up before looking for the leak and when I took off the pull starter cover to clean it off there was a small orange cylinder stuck in the goop and there was nowhere obvious where it could have come from. After cleaning everything I watched this video and at 1:53 into it, where there should be a little orange plug to keep oil from leaking out, there isn't one, just a hole. I took off the muffler and the little orange plug fit snugly into the hole. I'll monitor the plug after using the saw in case it pops out again and then get the screw-in plug to do the permanent repair. Thanks Steve!
Hi Steve! I was so happy when I saw your tip on leaking Stihl chainsaw. I was sure to solve my problem....but no luck. The little plug is still in place on my MS250. Any clue on other possible cause for this problem? Thanks again.
I have a 170 and it doesn’t leak oil but that’s still really useful information. Thank you! Do you do any videos on PoulanPro saws? I have a 46cc 20” “Classic” that I’m wanting to get higher rpms out of it for cutting hardwoods. Thanks Steve!
I like your videos so good I'm going to watch them all man. Sir you got a nack for teaching really enjoy your videos. I subscribed yesterday and I'm watching you again tonight.
So that's why my MS250 is pouring oil all over the place. If this is a bad design you think stihl would fix this free of charge as a recall. Thanks for the video.

Wow, thank you
The best tips for chainsaws are from this man!!!!!
Glad you think so!
Of course they are! He’s Canadian!
Anybody can do work on a chainsaw when drinking 1/2 a beer, drink a 12 pack and then make the video.
When I fire up the BBQ, the wife asks me how long the burgers will take. My answer is two beers. One for the warm up the other to cook them. Perfect burgers everytime.

I find Steve underestimates the amount of beer required to complete these jobs.

I decided it's the oil line. Also easy to replace.

Thanks for that video. The old 026 has been leaking out oil for a few years - now I know how to fix it.
This makes me want to find a leaky saw and buy it just to fix it. I don't even really need a chainsaw. This is what your videos do to me. Love it!!
Thank You...
I'm going to open a beer and start drinking, then go check for a leak, agreed.

I do have a 250 that leaks oil. Has for years. I just keep a little drip bucket under it. I will have to take a look at that now.
Typical. I find this information after I've gone to the trouble of replacing the rubber hoses. Thanks again mate.
Any time!
Great vid. My old mans 180 has been leaking since new. 4 or 5 years now. The dealer replaced a few parts and never found the leak. I'll be checking it tomorrow with a beer. 🍻

I have a Dolmar 7100 that leaks oil. Will have to see if it is similar setup. Would be great if could fix that one issue.

My 455 rancher has been leaking for years. I'll look at it this wk end.
Thanks brother!
Kevin Aalberts did you fix your problem? I have a 450 that leaks as well?
Thanks for all your great videos and tips. Makes a big difference
Glad to help
Found your channel to help tackle a chainsaw issue. It is so informative. Thanks for all your help. New subscriber.
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
What would cause gas coming out the gas cap when i rev up the engine ? I checked the o ring , it looks good.
How we determine if the leak is from the rubber hose that connects the tank to the pump or it’s from the plug you mentioned?
Thanks Steve. Mine has been leaking. It is an 036. I will be checking it. Thanks again👍👍👍❤️
Excellent tip. My MS 170 leaks oil, and know I know why, and how to fix it. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Could be the little oil pipe under the handle below the saw. There is an oring in there.
Good luck!
I’ve got a 30 year old 039 that just started leaking. Hopefully this tip will work for me.
I have used 1/4" set screws to fix them. I tap the hole with a tap I have marked at 3/16" deep. When the screw starts get harder to screw in. I go a 1/8 turn an stop. It works great
Thanks Steeve. This was the problem on my MS230C
Right on
You are the man Steve- thanks for the great video.
You're Welcome...
Steve......thanks, that should work on my MS-210. Happy Mothers Day!
You're Welcome...
How about a Husky leaking oil? Thanks for al your tips!
Know if I can just get all the oil in my case back in the saw !!
Thanks bro !
You're Welcome...
Thanks, I have that problem. Sorry all jobs are a 2 beer minimum.
Right on...
Not the bar stud its tight. I think it's the seal but not sure just getting a second opinion thx
Absolutely...
That’s awesome I didn’t know that , I will be looking out for the set screw, thanks Steve .
You're Welcome...
My chainsaw is now humming thanks to your videos. Cheers bro
Right on...
Top class video clearly explaining the issue. Especially liked the can of beer!!
Much appreciated!
Hi Steve! I was so happy when I saw your tip on leaking Stihl chainsaw. I was sure to solve my problem....but no luck. The little plug is still in place on my MS250. Any clue on other possible cause for this problem? Thanks again.
Same situation here, Stihl MS250C that leaks bar oil like a sieve and the plug is still in place, would love to hear Steve chime in.
It's most likely leaking from the oil tank vent. Take off the bar and look for a little round (spring loaded) vent. Give it a blast with an air hose.
Appreciate your site, keep up the great advice.
Thanks, will do!
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks Steve, I have a 170 and a 251. I will keep an eye out for any sign of leaking oil around this area.
Cheers 🍻 mate.
Glad to help
Hi Steve thinking of getting a second hand one that has the oil leak but can't view it can it be expensive expensive if it not the m6 plug
So that's why my MS250 is pouring oil all over the place. If this is a bad design you think stihl would fix this free of charge as a recall. Thanks for the video.
I'm having the same problem. Thank you very much 👍👍
No problem 👍
Thanks for sharing the wisdom Steve👍👏👏👏 and the beer review😍
My pleasure!
Thanks I’m goin to check mine right now. Opened the case yesterday an the darn saw sitting in a bath of oil.
Thanks for your Advice I have the same problem on my MS 171 Sthil chain saw … it might take two beers 🍻 😂
LOL! Pace yourself...
Thanks Steve!, great video, my saw had the plug missing, I think it was leaking for a while, fixed it, now it doesn’t leak anymore .
