Thanks Steve! I have went from clueless to maybe having a clue. I have 2 hours on your videos and loves them. It's great to watch a down to earth person teaching others. May GOD bless you. Thanks Mike Stafford
Thank you. I've been an auto mechanic all of my life, but I'm starting at a Mower/chainsaw repair shop job on Monday. I've been watching your videos mostly, as they are real practical information for my transition into yard machines. Thank you.
This completely solved my problem! After taking the bar and chain off I ran the saw and verified that oil was being pumped out. I then thoroughly cleaned the hole on the bar and the groove going around the whole bar. It oils like a charm now. Thanks so much!
You’re frickin awesome! I’m a widow that’s had to learn a whole lotta loud, dirty, hard and scary sh%t since my big ole He-Man Hungarian Barbarian took a left instead of a right and sadly ended up going to that Big Bad Shop in Heaven. I want you to know that I think you’re an absolute Angel for explaining everyday things that I can actually comprehend and learn the simple and safe way to do them and I can build on that knowledge to further my skills to live life without my head in an oven.. thanks Steve
Another good video Steve, if possible clean your saw after each cutting session. Compressed air is nice as it makes the job easier. Clean the bar slot as Steve mentioned, just don’t slide something in the slot that will widen that gap. Also check the oiling port hole on the saw for cleanliness while the bar is off. Always use bar & chain oil, other oil can cause issues. Thanks Steve, from the USA-eh!
Thanks Steve!! Am working on a Ryobi 10 inch battery chainsaw that is not oiling. This video was GREAT in confirming that the oil was indeed getting from the oil reservoir to the chain through the weep hole. Now know for sure that it is a problem with the bar!! Starting cleaning the channel of the bar and was packed full of dry grass. Slow and steady and making progress!! Also working on my other Ryobi battery chainsaw (I have 2) that got tangled up in some hay twine that someone did not throw away.. lots of tiny little fibers caught up in the bar channel. I have dedicated work clothes set aside for chainsaw work-- the bar oil sure is goopy stuff.
For years I've been manually oiling the chain on my saw. Cleaned the passageway on the saw body itself untold times, never thought to look for a pathway in the bar itself! Going to have to check it out next time I have the saw out! Thank you!
Awesome, after seeing all the manufacturers troubleshooting tips and checking all the parts this was all I needed to see. Six or so pulls and it came back to life.
My was not working so I cleaned bar as suggested and no change but it was a bit dirty so probably good to do as routine maintenance. What I found on my saw was the filter was covered with a white substance, maybe had some sawdust in oil not sure, I’m really super careful when filling with oil not to get something in the tank. I dumped it out cleaned the filter washed tank out with gas and now it oils like a champ.thanks for video as it led me in the right direction and now I know how it works, not very complicated.
Thanks, I fixed it! I had painted the bar because of corrosion and had a "fisheye" at the oil hole that was letting some oil through but not full flow. Cleaned that out and problem solved! 😊
Oh, I made a grave mistake, I listen to a dummy. He said I could use used motor oil for bar oil. Will I found that after doing so it got clogged and hot. So I put gas in bar oil spout. Put cap on and shook the hell outta it. To loosen and debris. Then dumped it out really good. Did it twice to get it cleaned out. I hope I got it all. I will check tomorrow to see if oiler is coming out freely or maybe it's plugged. Hope not. After listening to someone I thought knew what he was talking about, I decided your tube videos are much more helpful. Thank you!
Just unplugged an oil hole in a chainsaw bar today. That´s why i came back to this video. Your videos really are helping! Will run the saw tomorrow to see if it sprays oil at a piece of cardboard like you showed. (For your information: I tried to buy stuff from your amazon store, like the lawn mower blade balancer, but it won´t ship to me. Seems to be because i live in europe and you link to a north american amazon store. I couldn´t get it to work for me. European amazon ships to me just fine, but not from your store. So maybe you could link to different stores for the different continents or something. When it comes to computer/internet stuff i´m not the brightest knife in the shed though, so maybe it´s just me...)
You just saved me money. My old McCulloch Super Pro 81 wasn't oiling the bar, even when I used the manual oiler button, and I was afraid that I was going to have to replace the oil pump. Turns out the hole was clogged and once I cleaned it, it worked just like always. Thanks!
Great vid, thanks. I’ve been trying for ages to figure out why my Qualcast electric chainsaw isn’t self oiling. I completely misunderstood the oiling system until I saw this 👍
Steve great tip. I bought a used Makita EA6100P chainsaw and noticed it sprayed ALOT of oil. After removing the chain, I used that first tool you showed and ran it in the groove in the guide bar and found alot of gunk! I re-adjusted the oiler from max to a medium setting, works correctly now but it took a week for all that oil to stop leaking!
Very clear and concise instructions presented in a way that most people can understand. I have watched several of his videos and have saved money and gained knowledge
so happy i found this channel, i got my saw running yesterday again, thanks,,,,right now im dealing with a lot of bar oil under the cover,,,seems like its going everywhere under the stihl cover
As a new chainsaw owner/user, I'm loving your videos on chainsaws. I have a newer Stihl saw (MS251) and it does oil but I don't think it oils as much as your saw in this demonstration. Someone told me that they probably cut back on the amount it oils the bar due to environmental reasons. I did know that I was supposed to keep the bar clean but I never thought of running the saw without the bar to see how much oil is coming out. Thanks for the tip!
It wouldn't surprise me if that's the case. I have a newer one and usually have trouble finding the oil spray (which the manual says it should do). At the same time, I know it's oiling because I'm having to add more oil.
Thank.Helped so much.I was burning up chains and never knew about that hole in bar. Also did not know how th oil came out.So helpful thanks buddy!!!!You just saved me a lot of headaches.
Man, I;m glad this was a one beer job lol !! I am having this exact same problem with my Echo CS-6701. I have noticed the oil wasn't coming through and wasn't aware of the oil hole on the bar. I was thinking it may be something to do with the auto oiler system. I do remember some time back that it actually used more oil than I thought was normal. Is there such a thing ?? Thank you so much for this video Sir !
I had the same problem and did not have the specialized tool to disassemble the chainsaw to get to the oil pump. Was going to make the tool but though to myself "just one more vid", low and behold my chain wasn't getting any oil because i have a spacer plate which doesn't seat properly so all the oil drains down behind it, i dug around the garage and all my "rvt" silicone that i had used for previous "projects" have dried up but i found some marine silicone that hadn't dried up completely yet so i used it. It hasn't cured yet but i can already see that it makes a complete seal, the bolt is only finger tight now, tomorrow once it's cured I'll tighten it and off to the races! Ironically i bough the chainsaw at an "off the truck sale" and it was a demo or returned item deemed 100% fine, i was quite disgruntled about my purchase until this vid. Well played sir. Mag dit reen waar jou bokke wei.
Great video and instruction. The Sthil MS 180 chainsaw has two holes at the clutch end of the blade. Turning the machine on with no blade was a good start to see that it was pumping out oil. I cleaned out the channel on the blade with a scraper, the little screw driver that Sthil provides and a paper clip. There is a hole between the blade channel and the blade hole that was full of sawdust.
I just put a new chain on and was thinking I bought the wrong chain. After watching your video I saw the holes in the bar were plugged up. Awsome video, thank you.
thanks for the great video.I was wondering why the last time i cut, my chain saw dry as a bone. My guide bar was plugged. saved me future headaches with this video
Thanks Steve, I think that many chainsaws have hit the landfill because of this one small , easily fixable problem. Yes, you are for sure saving us money ! !
Steve you are Right. I clean my Bar out every time I cut wood. I use a MS260 PRO, AND MS311 BOTH STIHL Saws. My thoughts exactly on your thinking Sir. I have fixed many Saws where all it is that you have to keep that Bar Area open to get that oil in the bar and chain. Love your Video's keep them coming. Ron
This might sound sorta obvious, but make sure you use a lighter bar oil if you're working in winter weather. Summer oil turns to molasses in the cold and you could easily assume there's something wrong with your saw. Bring it in the house, warm it up for half a day until the oil flows, then dump it out and replace it with the proper winter oil.

Steve from one wood carving wood house heating Canuck to another thanks 👍. Saved me a shop charge and downtime . It’s June here in bc and time to get cutting and seasoning for winter ❄️. Weekends aren’t for rest there for providing heat for the family when the power goes out this winter 💪
The little oiler hole was at the bottom of the blade, not at the top where the oil come out. Yes the blade was right side up according to the brand lettering. . I burned up one blade and chain because of this manufacturing defect. I flipped the blade over and it works great. This was on a Stihl MS170
To clean the oil hole I just get a really small drill bit and put the drill bit in the oil hole and clean out the oil hole like that, Thanks steve good information when soming is wrong with my chainsaw I go to your channel and look for what I think is wrong with my chainsaw.
Wow Steve you're closing in on 300,000 subscribers congrats!👍🏻My farm boss started using only 1/2 tank of oil to one gas your tip saved me $$$ and problems!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 you're the best brother!✌🏻️
Great video. I have to do as much maintenance myself as i can. It's not sound to pay to repair equipment today unless you are doing it as a business with the big money equipment. If you just putz around like me, I have to keep everything tip top, can't afford to have a catastrophe.
Now that was a interesting video and a tip that everyone should be able to use and that could save everybody a lot of money not having to take it in to the dealership or repair shop.
Going to do what you said Steve hopefully save my bar on my ms251 chain is far gone so going to have to put a new one on but simple tips are the best thanks Steve Andy from England 🇬🇧
I know this vids pretty old but I've got a stihl battery chain saw and oil was not lubricating chain I had it booked in to stihl to look at but it was a 4 week wait 😂 thank God I found your channel thanks mate you saved me some bucks
You have saved me tons of money and relieved me of lots of worries. I watch and thumbs up all your vids even if i already know what im doing just to make sure im doing it the right way and to learn anything new which i absolutely have. Your the best and i appreciate you very much.
This is great information. Question - If you don't have an automatic oiler how often should I be pushing the oil lever? My saw is a small Homelite from the 70s. Thanks in advance.
This guy looks like David Ross, former MLB Catcher. Very helpful and down to earth explanations. Keep poppin those tops and spreading the word on chainsaw repairs, there are still real men in America!
Hey man, THANKS!!! My MS 251 was dry as a bone on the bar, so I took it apart, as per this vid, and the bar indeed was the culprit. Working fine now....good job!!

I just saw your video, went to my shed, did what you said needed to be done and directly brought my chainsaw to life. Many thanks.
