I'm a mechanic 👨🔧👨🏭, I have 16 experereants. I have a chainsaw and I fix it some Times. I know how to repair small engines, cars, motorcycles. I love your videos 🤝8-)
My chainsaw stopped working since last week it has no spark, after disconnecting ignition wire it sparks a lil though. I would like to know what should be done next
My Chinese chainsaw which is new has the same symptom. Run strong when cold then dies and won't start when warm. I replaced the carburetor. Same thing starts right up when cold. Why would coil fail when warm?
I normally don't get into comments but I must thank you. I have a Stihl 012AV that most certainly had an issue with dying when it got hot. Your comment that the spark plug can contribute to this saved me! You cannot purchase an ignition module anymore for my saw...so I thought I would at least try the spark plug after your comment...it worked!!! Before the saw would fire up no problem, run great...then die once it was hot. I replaced with a brand new NGK, it fired up, it got hot, it got hotter, it screamed, it wailed...it did not die! Before getting a new module one must try a new plug first. Thank you for your help!
Love my ms261C but replaced both oil pump $120 and ignition module $170 in first 3 years. Have a 1984 sthil 028 wood boss only part ever had to replace was carb boot. I’m pretty handy fixing stuff but Donny your videos are the absolute best on you tube and are very helpful to me. Thank You
Thanks for taking the time to upload. Managed to fix 'no spark' issue. It turned out not to be the ignition unit but a combination of bad earth and loose switch cable. You gave me the confidence to properly open up and investigate. Cheers from SCOTLAND!
Thank you so much for all your instructions! You've walked me thru three repairs so far and your step by step diagnosis and repair instructions are so easy to follow. So glad i didn't chuck my ms170 to the trash bin. I've probably cut about four or five cords of almond and fig wood since installing my ignition coil with your help. Again thank you.
I liked the way you diagnosed the problem and fixed that chainsaw. I have a Stihl chainsaw which is hard to pull over and don't want to start for me. The saw have been in the shop several times and I still have problems with it. After the problems I have had my solution is to never buy another Stihl saw again.
Great troubleshooting video. Thanks for running the saw. Always nice to see the repair all the way through. For anyone passionate about IC engines, we always love to see them come alive.
I tested my spark plug using your method. It was just a bad wire connection to control module and that fixed my Husqvarna's saw starting problem. Thank you so much!
Excellent video Dony. Your production quality is right up there with DIY tv shows. It's obvious you spend a lot of time getting your shots just right, and editing the videos very well.
Thanks for all of these videos. Neither my MS180C nor my 026 Pro would start after sitting for a year. Using your diagnostic tips and some relatively inexpensive parts, I have them both up and running.
Great video had no idea where the ignition module was and troubleshooting a grounded ignition, fixed myself on the farm saved me time and money thank you very very much Dan
You made my day after my Ms660 stopped working when hot. I thought I had flooded it, but no spark, I had a coil on hand, with your instructions it was back at work within 15 minutes. It started 1st pull the next morning. Thanks.
New subscriber here, I have a 044 Stihl chainsaw. Recently, it only ran when it was cold and shut down once it warmed up but now it won't even start no more. I strongly believe it's the ignition module, haven't replace that for many years. Thanks for the info video.
Thanks Dony! My saw won't start. No spark. The shop is two weeks out to repair it. But; thanks to you, I'll order a new coil kit and fix it myself and save a bunch of money by doing so.
this hus 240 has me stump no spark replaced coil/flywheel removed ground lead also check coil to ground new spark plug and still no spark turn flywheel with drill motor approx 1500 rpm and still no spark any suggestion
I especially liked the tip about disconnecting the positive wire isolates it to the coil exclusively. That made me much more confident to order a new coil. Thanks!
Great video Dony, However, I would like to add one more tid-bit of advice. I have a Poulen 2250 that was driving me crazy. I had checked for spark and the spark plug was sparking fine but it would not start. Even with starter fluid it would not start. The carb was good, the gas lines were good, good compression, the spark plug was sparking but it would not run. Then I noticed an unusually large gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel. Why or how that happened I’ll never know. After I properly gapped the ignition coil the old 2250 runs like a new one. Thought I would share that with you so you can pass it on.
I'm working on two identical MS194Ts. First is why did Stihl make it so hard to get the plug wire off the plug and to adjust the high low screws on the carb. One saw runs but idles too high and if i adjust the idle down it dies. The other saw has no spark. As always, Donny...Great videos
Thanks again Donny for the great videos. Problem i have now is a Stihl MS211 with brand new Stihl Ignition coil and still no spark or intermittent spark. I've tried new plugs, set the gap on the coil and still will not fire
Thanks, helped me quickly diagnose a Chinese 6200 62cc chainsaw where the on off switch was bad right new from the factory. Once I unplugged that black wire from the coil the spark plug was sparking while cranking. I'm sure that definitely means they don't do quality control or start each one up before packing them up. Anyway, ordered 5 new switches from ebay for half the price that one would cost shipped from a USA seller. While it's probably gonna take up to a month to arrive, I just turn it off with the choke, they turn off fine that way too.
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge. You have given me the confidence to this seventy year old timer to rebuild my Stihl MS180C. You do a great service. Denny, Caope Cod
Excellent Help. Following your instructions to replace the MS 280 ignition module it now starts right up. However, at one point you mention starting problems could also be in some other part of the electrical system. Now, some time later after cutting a cord or two my saw will not TURN OFF when I move the switch to the OFF position. It sure would be nice to see more info about the other parts of the electrical system and what kinds of problems they might typically have.
Awesome vid. Thanks! Think my 064's got a bad one. Runs good till hot, dies won't start. Now I'm at the point where it simply won't start and spark is present but seems kinda random or where you really got pull it to see it. I'll try the things you show here. Thanks!
hey pal, southern cally big dood here, i kinow theres naysayers in our world, but after THIS video, why would ya want to do a thumbs down. Great Great info. Blessings as always, snj
great video again Dony. I am working on a new MS261C m-tronic saw that has no spark. I also found that when the chain break is engaged you cannot pull the recoi. I pulled the break cover off and found one of the tension springs was broken. I wounder if that may have contributed to the no spark issue. I'll do some more troubleshooting and make sure it's the coil.
Obviously I'm having these problems since I'm here. I have an MS271, but mine looks newer. I looked up both, ignition module, which I bought and searched coil. Photos online look like the same exact part. I anticipate mine is headed to a repair shop.
Thank you for the very descriptive video. I don't know small engines at all and all other vids say magnets at top, but don't say what they are. So thank you from a new home mechanic for the great video!
After replacing the ignition module I tried testing for a spark by turning the flywheel rapidly using my hand. When I did not get a spark I assumed the problem hadn’t been fixed. Come to find out you can’t turn the flywheel quickly enough by hand to get a spark. Once I reinstalled the recoil starter I had a good spark.
I picked up a dolmar PS 420 that won't start only pops once..has spark. Immediately suspected the coil..checked flywheel key just to be sure...great video thanks
Doc I got a got a stihl fs80r trimer 4137 3401 and put a new ignition coil 4137 -400-1350 and switch is good but no spark? Thank you for the videos you doing a good job!
All good info. one bit you should mention , that is the Spark plug is a Resistive type and that if you use a none Resistive Spark plug or HT lead type then you will damage your control board.
Another great and helpful video. I have this same saw and can’t figure out how to plug the hole for winter operation. Am I missing a part to cover the hole for summer?
One of the first things I check is the position of the bayonet lug on the end of the spark plug wire. These can be undone by users pulling the spark plug wire, haphazardly. I usually take my carb adjustment screwdriver and insert it in the boot and feel for the bayonet lug in the bottom of the boot. A lot of times it has been pushed back down the end of the boot where it can no longer connect the spark plug If this happens, I pull it out of the boot , connect it back on the spark plug wire and inset it back into the boot and re-check it for spark. A lot of times this fixes the problem, sometimes not. I then troubleshoot the coil if I still do not have spark, but this is my first check. .
Thank you for the help mate - from Australia *use a playing card 'guage' by the verniers it was 0.9 I'm getting 2 years from $14 coils from eBay - Carbs for the lower end MS series under $20 as well compared to the Stihl 'Genuine' parts. That genuine coil in OzTralia is about $80 USD

Excellent, excellent video with The perfect amount of details to troubleshoot the problem on my Husqvarna 136. Thanks very much Dony! Luckily, my coil module is less than $20 online.
I had a problem with a coil on a TORO 2 stroke lawnmower. I really like that lawnmower so I called the dealer and a new coil was $240.00 . It was on a Kawasaki engine and those parts are almost as expensive as Honda parts. It would fail when it warmed up and sometimes had no spark at all. If I disconnected the plug and turned it with a cordless drill it would bring back the spark but it was only temporary. I decided it was a moisture problem. I put the coil in the oven for 20 minutes at 275 degrees F ( I could have made cookies at the same time). LOL I put it on the machine and I had spark and then cut the grass. Then I took it off and coated it with 5 minute epoxy but again only a temporary fix. I pulled it off and cleaned the epoxy off with a wire wheel and then coated it with 2 coats of shellac. Shellac is something that will penetrate and seal much better than anything I could think of. That was 3 years ago and it is working fine. If I fixed small engines for a living I would never do that for a customer unless they wanted me too but that could be a lot of work for nothing if it was a different problem but a new coil for $240.00 was a good reason to do it. I like your videos. You are one of the few that knows what they are talking about.
Is ignition module failure a known problem with the MS 270, MS 280 saws? I've had an MS 270 for at least a dozen years, and I just had to replace my 5th module. This last one cost $160 from the Stihl dealer. I use the saw, maybe, 6-8 times a year, so it's not like it's getting a ton of use. I'm just getting frustrated at having to keep replacing a module, when I could buy a brand new equivalent saw for 3 times the price of the module. I'm tempted to just buy cheap aftermarket modules, because, if nothing else, I'll feel like I got my money's worth if it fails in a year or 2. Any thoughts?
On the Stihl 048 AV electronic chainsaw, what is the proper name for the circular part that is under the flywheel? and how do you test it to make sure it is good or bad. Thanks for your time
Hi Don. I have a Stihl MS211/C chainsaw in Australia that I have to replace the flywheel on. I accidentally sheared the key on my old one when I was trying to remove the clutch by trying to remove it the wrong way. (I had a severe brain fade ) .. I now have a new flywheel and wonder if you need to remove the ignition coil first to provide clearance and the correct way to torque up the nut on the flywheel . I would follow your advice by using a business card to provide the correct flywheel magnet/coil clearance. If you know the correct torque specs it would be useful to confirm. I think 28 Newton Metres ?. I have been looking on your site for flywheel removal / installation but not having too much success. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hello and good day all. Thanks for all the great videos Donyboy but I just found out I have an electrical problem on my ms270c which is not the ignition module. Would you be able to help with an electrical troubleshooting video? Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into your videos.
Thanks, I did your test and unplugged the black wire and then checked and it had plenty of spark. I think the problem might be in the switch. Any videos on switch replacement/and further checking of the wires.
Thank you!! For the Video, it helped a lot!! And one question, why doesn’t my chainsaw’s chain not stop automatically, without using the brake? Thank you!!
A business card is usually fine for setting the air gap, as long as it is .010 thick. Some are thicker. The Stihl spec is .15-.30mm, or .006-..012 inches, so a .010 thick business card is fine.
Imagine how many Stealerships must hate you for giving us all this good information. However, they don't have to worry as 99% of people out there will never try to repair their own equipment. Too busy, or too scared, or too lazy.
Hi, Thanks for your great videos. I've been restoring a Craftsman 18" 42cc saw. It looks to have had very little use but the fuel lines were disintegrated when I acquired it. I replaced the lines and it started and ran rough for 30 seconds or so then it died and would not start again. I replaced the spark plug and nothing. Because it had started I didn't think it was electrical so rebuilt and cleaned the carb. Still nothing so finally checked for spark and nothing using both spark plugs. So I ordered a new coil which fits but the terminal was different as was the angle on the spark plug lead cap.which made it tight to put the cover on. Still wouldn't start and no spark even with the new coil. What should I check/do now?🤔
Does your chainsaw only run until it gets warm, or will it not even start at all? It could be that you have weak or no spark at all at the spark plug.

thanks, is an ignition coil the same as a magneto? The retail shop said my ms250 magneto was bad.

Superb, clear advice, thanks very much, job done, my saw is back running so I am a happy boy again.

Hello and good day all. Thanks for all the great videos Donyboy but I just found out I have an electrical problem on my ms270c which is not the ignition module. Would you be able to help with an electrical troubleshooting video? Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into your videos.
excellent video very easy to follow very helpful thanks so much
Thanks for your through explanation.
Thank you!!
Awesome tutorial, thank you.
Hi,
Thanks for your great videos.
