you guys should come back to the US at some point when you can! :)
I’ve never liked Metallica enough in the past to buy any of their records, but absurdly enough, I was given free tickets to see them live in Sacramento, CA in 2018 and again in 2019 at the opening night of the Chase Center in San Francisco with the S.F. Symphony Orchestra. Each show was significantly different, but both were equally fantastic. In my opinion, Metallica are, and always have been, the real deal.
Got my ticket for the UK :) could you please do an episode covering The Clash 🥺 ? rock the cashbah is great and the lyrics against fanatism seem to be as relevant as ever taking the war and The protests in Iran as recent examples. It is also a song that often is misunderstood. Please 🥺

Hetfield was untouchable during his cowardly lion phase.
😆
He was King of the Forrrressssttt! No doubt
Still is
@Dale if only Lars had a brain
@Dale
Lars isn't a drummer. He's a neanderthal who beats things with sticks.
Put it this way, in every band except Metallica, the drummer keeps time. In Metallica, Lars uses James to keep time.
Watching Justin stan Metallica is the best thing I’ve seen in ages. The joy, the adoration, the respect. Delivered with Justin’s love of music and his passion for performing. Best “episode” yet.
I first heard Metallica when I saw One on MTV when I was like 7. I was like "these are the coolest dude's on the planet. That's what I wanna do" Now I'm 40 and I play in one of the biggest Metallica tributes in the state. Every time we play One, my little 7 year old self is up there with me like "DUDE!! WE DID IT!!"
What's the band? I'd love to see you guys throw down live.
Dude, same but I was 9. I saw it around the time it came out. That video freaked me out and I LOVED it.
This makes my black heart rejoice
"Dudes" dumb@$$
I was like 12 or 13 but yeah. Same!
James' posture is so iconic! That is what little boys imitate in their little rooms and makes them feel like a rockstar. Love it
Yeah, I want that silhouette of James at 5:03 on a t-shirt.
Maybe without the mic stand though.
And any real musician never does
I have it mastered. The guitar... Not so much.
Little boys?? I'm 42 and still do it!
so true, i can still see my teenage self holding the broom in front of the mirror while posing like james. 🤣
Lars is more than a drummer, he has an ear for placement and accentuation not just on drums but all instruments and the song as a whole. His offbeat crash is iconic, his fills don't follow metal cliches, makes very good use of the snare on odd beats during a lot of his fills...he's technically not the best but he is iconic and his drum tracks are memorable.
Makes me feel better about myself knowing that even Justin doesn't pay for UA-cam premium
Haha - thought the same!
no-one does...
You’re crazy if you do. $30 a month is effing ridiculous.
Best subscription I’ve ever paid for and the only one thatI’ve never let lapse. I’d rather pay 15 bucks for YT than Netflix or cable bc then some of my money is actually going to creators, not execs (at least in theory).
@@the_minimalistic_adventure I'll say this: It was one of the best free trials I've ever used, lol. Not having ads whatsoever for three months was so amazing that I've considered signing up for the paid subscription several times. Just can't justify the cost though, unfortunately. If they brought it down even a few bucks a month, I'd be a lot more tempted.
Whether you’re a drummer, singer, harpist or don’t even play an instrument I don’t think possible not to play along with Lars’ fill. Very rare to see a drum fill become part of the main hook of a song. Awesome
One of my fondest memories is walking with my mom during a snow-day to get a few things at the store and returning with a Ride The Lightning cassette.
I remember James Hetfeild, handing out Kill em' All records, at a small Club in CT.
Those were the days.
That was the tour they played in a pole shed/wharehouse space in my little Podunk town of about 60,000 people in western Wisconsin.

Lars was freaking great drummer back in the day.
Its not just my perception but also Eric Carr, Bill Ward, Carmine Appice etc...
Don't make Bassist jokes
@@Nissardpertugiu he was OK at the beginning, albeit he was never on Dave Lombardo's level, but he got lazy and sloppy as fame went to his head.
@@richardharrold9736 totally different styles, why compare like lead guitarist do, always comparing over your shoulders on competition ? If you re good in your own,
And you re original and you re part of the greatness of songwriting and arranging entity, you re great.
Why always say , within guys that are totally different " Oh he doesn't play the same , he s not at the same level ".
Art is not comparing to Gelateria dude.
Its like saying " Chick webb was okay, but never of the level of Louie Bellson " whats the point of doing that ?
In early Metallica's , Lars did a lot of triplets feet even in his skan beats, he did a lot of coordinations hand feets by 5 and 4 and even 6 on several songs such Fight Fire with Fire, Ride the Lightning , Trapped Under Ice and Battery before the solo and Welcome home through the solo and At the ending and more , also almost what Mitch Mitchell took from max roach type fill with 2 bass drums in the last opening chorus of Shortest straw , with also to me a little Simon Phillips inspiration, a very weird thing between 4 hits rolls- flam tap snare stuff and mooving from toms with the triplet bass drums.
Brillant !
Something Dave practically never did in Slayer, especially in the begining, he did mostly Quads or Old school triplets like in original of agressive perfector. You have a little more on Hell Hawaits, But its really around South of heaven and Season in the Abyss that Lombardo combine more the top and bottoms limbs in fills.
Dave also did his thrash beats at just one note of the bass drum, and his ride thing is quite linear.
Lars ride playing, the few he had playing, had accents in holes in double strokes, up , exactly like Paicey in Strombringer. Or even Bill Ward especially in the mid to late 70's through Heaven and Hell.
I do that a lot too because Paice is my number one.
Mikkey dee does it too.
It gives something Funky that Dave doesn't have, or not that way.
You can hear that on the last chorus of Fight fire with Fire , it has a great pocket .
Lars did in disposable heroes breakdown a lot of that ride swing accentuations into that first kind half of parradidle going to the toms.
Lars also did some of the things cozy powell originated, like the Creeping death thing , you find in Harvester of Sorrow , Frayed ends, Welcome home , And Justice for all, like variations such 4 strokes in snare followed by a 4 or 5 hits going from 3 toms 2 feet.
Or in welcome home in the half time part before the harmonious climax towards the end of the song.
Snare left hand on the begining , right hand snare and 4 coordinations on toms followed by the popo tach tach ..
On the Seattle 1989, with the camera on him just from the rack Tom point of view, he s doing it the Carmine appice way , Left Hand snare on the time followed by Left hand snare on quarter note pointed, before the tom followed by the 2 bass drums .
You don't do all that if you re just okay.
Also when you arrange such songs.
You re great in your own .
When i hear or read comments that Lars never knew much about drumming , i say bullshit.
You don't do that if you don't know shit, at the contrary , Lars knew what he was doing, arranging and tracking thoses songs, performing them.
A lot of accents and reactions in places that weren't supposed to, very much in the school of Bill Ward, Keith Moon and people like this, a way of doing things people look sometimes a mistake because nowadays they such formated into the academic thing cyborg bullshit even into the guys that play extreme modern stuff like Cymbals on 1 and 3 etc...
Myself i get criticize a lot because as all thoses guys since the 60's purposely as answer of falling of musical movement as slap in face or spicy things, i did on 2 or 4 . Its part of my style as well.
Even Ian Paice, The guy from Diamond Head etc...
Lars has also a kind of barbaric lose style into extreme and intricate stuff in feel, like Mercyful Fate, which i don't think is an accident ;) .
What makes Metallica great is their songs. They work so hard on their songs and it shows. James and Lars are just simply great songwriters. Simple as that. They are not afraid to experiment and fail.
Saaaaaaaaint Aaaaaaaaanger
@@Oppetsismiimsitsitc I AM THE TABLE 😆
Well, as a band what else would make them great? Fashion sense?
@@RByrne exactly lol
@@RByrne A lot of metal bands focused on riffs and speed. Which is great too, but they didn't necessarily write memorable songs. Songwriting is a craft.
This song and "Wherever I May Roam" are SOO incredibly heavy!
Great to hear a nod to one of England's all time greatest rock bands. The Cult.
He spoke about them much more but I’m kinda going through Justin’s videos out of order but he really loves them, as do I. He gave a starters playlist on his Spotify. Wish he had The Witch on it. Such a wild, sexy song.
@@phoenixgirl70 ye I noticed he does on other videos also. He has certainly gone up in my estimations now. Obviously has good taste
It's hard to get any kind of air when you compete against Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.
Heaviest tones ever created for Metallica. Bob Rock put this right up with Back in Black, Sonic Temple and Girls girls girls. People can talk smack on it all day but its one of the BEST Productions in Heavy Rock/ Metal ever.
Yet when you listen to black album and immediately go into Load, Load sounds considerably better - but the edge isn't there. Black album had edge, but Load had a more full, rounded sound.
I thought he did Dr feel-good. Did he do both?
@@williamberry8895 I know he did Dr but it was similar to Girls. Thats a good question
@@mattdad8429 Did he do Load? I actually like all those albums. Great production
@@jayteesgear Yep. Bob produced Load, ReLoad, St. Anger, and of course the Black Album.
It was cool to hear Rick Beato mention you by name on his channel. He expressed interest in doing a colab with you. Would love to see that.
Love Metallica. Long time fan since 83.
Ride the Lightning is my favourite Metallica album. That album delivered loads of great tunes, one after another.
That's the best one. Still rough and fast but with a little musical maturity after the previous recording and tour.
I tend to agree, although James is so young, and you can really hear it on his voice. His voice develops a lot through Master and Justic.
Definitely the best imo as well. Master of Puppets is art but the entire tracklist of Ride the Lightning is more solid to me.
Yeah
Lightning was frantic, raw, and emotional but still head and shoulders above what ANY other band was doing, by far. Puppets was like if metal was a painting or a sculpture - it was pure beauty, well thought out, and labored over. And that almost (almost) loses points with me because once you think too much about it it loses the organic quality.
Loving how Justin goes all Tarantino, choreographing a movie fight to the song. This really needs to be done by someone now. 😆
When Black came out I was 12. This album turned me on to metal because l then bought all the previous and became a metal head 4 life.
Me too. I was 8 when it was released and I was given a copy on a cassette tape (remember them! 😂) and that was it, turned me into a metalhead.
I just want to say I was 11 but my parents were (are) metal heads, I thought "sad but true" was acrually "Sepultura" slowly 😂
I was 12 too dude. Older kid in my behavior disorder class had the cassette. He let me listen to it. Went out the next day and bought it with my mom's old boyfriend. First cassette ever.🤘
It’s worth checking out the demo at the original tempo before Bob Rock suggested slowing it down. Amazing how much difference that makes
They made a smart investment in getting Bob. It's no accident a lot of bands have their biggest album with him.
It's almost like a different song. Brilliant move.
And tuning it down. It sounded really happy before they did that.

Kudos to Bob Rock for his excellent production work on The Black Album as well.
Justin’s dedication to precision air drumming is second to none! 😂😂😂 what a great video, Justin thank you so much for the laughs
The first time i saw Metallica I was watchin the Freddie Mercury Tribute on TV ( Queen are one of my favorite bands ever) and I felt totally blown away. So thanks to Brian,Roger and Deacy for introducing me to Metallica
I'm a drummer ... and as much as sometimes Lars may sound "sloppy", he has an unique signature... and he has actually inspired a lot of people.
I remember when I was learning to play in the 90s, I actually really struggled to grasp where his crashes were landing...
Jesus Justin thank you for making me almost pee with laughter this episode. Your knowledge and humor are so sharp. I never got to play any instruments (grew up barely getting by) but I love music and the magic that are guitars.
You certainly know how to make a bar room fight scene set to this song sound hilarious. 😂 Great video as always.

My favourite kind of guitar solos are those done on top of a juke box amidst a bar fight.
Love Napalm Death, Sepultura, Slayer, Brujería and the others you mentioned, didn’t know you were into that heavy music, good to know that were into that music too!🤘🏼🤘🏼
You love Napalm Death? I saw them just before Covid. They played with Testament, Lamb of God, Anthrax and Slayer. I was not impressed. Did something change? The front man had no stage presence. His voice was not good . The music was so-so but it was over shadowed by the awfulness of the vocalist. He complained that he had been doing the same thing since high school and they were still not successful. I was glad when they left the stage actually. Can you recommend something they have done that would change my mind?
@@debibrewster9080 I had no idea they were still going to be honest but back in the 80's they were a really important band in the UK. Grindcore was never my thing but it was unique at the time. They were also one of the first bands to really champion animal rights and anarchism so were popular in the anarcho-punk scene too. Check out the debut album 'Scum' it's a classic of the genre, you'll either love it or think it's the worst thing you've ever heard. 😂 ... the full album is on YT btw. 🤘
that sums up napalm death...
Haahaha! In 1990 I skipped school when I was 14 and tried to sneak into see Napalm Death (wearing my Catholic school boy uniform 😂)because I was skint. It was around the time of their second album. The singer of the support act Cerebral Fix was taking money & tickets on the door and took pity on me and let me in for free because all I had was my bus fare (about £2.80). The bands had already set up their gear and I joined in with them playing a game of football in the Building & Print hall where they were playing. There were a lot of Crusties drinking flaggons of cider, even got a few drinks in exchange for some cigs that I'd stolen off my Mum😂. It was an excellent gig, load as hell.

@RandomMatrix Jealous!! I'm disabled now so it's not so easy to get to gigs anymore but I'm so glad I got to see them when I did.
6x at 6 different venues, all in Florida in their prime. Caught Kirk's pick in Daytona Beach on the Justice tour
You played two immediately brought to mind riffs and I recognised them both immediately as being from awesomely globe-topping songs, then a couple of weeks later you play a couple of riffs on acoustic guitar and reduce me to tears as I think about the original songs. I haven't felt like that since Weird Al polka'd our eyes out.
Have you done any videos on Tenacious D, I'd like to see your take on Jack Black singing, I personally think he's a very underrated singer, he deserves more credit?
These are the best breakdowns. Just being yourself throughout the video. Humor + education. It’s what makes this channel special.
I’m the worlds biggest (self proclaimed) AC/DC fan, and also love, love, love Metallica, they are brilliant. Got a massive kick out of seeing Lars play with Brian Johnson at the tribute concert, the joy on his face was awesome to see. Great video Justin. And, just to add. The fabulous 🤮 Adam Levine quoted ‘“no hot girls like metal”. Yes we do Adam, the difference is we’re just fucking smarter than the girls who like you. 🤘🤘🤘

It’s annoying that 30 years later, people still rag on the Black Album. Time has proven them wrong. One of the biggest and best metal records of all time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Do you wish we would keep the Black Album's name out of our motherfuckin mouths?
Much like the Napster debacle. They were right all along, and only now we're seeing the evidence. They were 15-20 years ahead of their time on calling that.
Yes!!!!!!!

I like how this time Justin just literally jams out and has fun listening to what seems to be one of his favorite Metallica tunes. There's no debate or counterpoint just, "hey I really like Metallica, and this song in particular squiggles my jimmies, plus kung fu." He is one of the few people I can watch just have fun listening to music. You can tell he's a true musician who loves music in general and wants to share that love!
Lars drumming is so distinctive. Justice for all is a prime example
It's especially distinctive when you fade out the bass so much you can't hear it.
yes, the whole album, but I really love Shortest Straw and especially the rolling toms in Harvester of Sorrow. So, so fucking good.
@@dylanadams1455 I love the album too. Lars is a good drummer when he hits the right drum at the right time.

The Black Album is what got me into Metal. Never looked back since. \m/
Not to mention the lyrics which are also great. Especially the variation on the last chorus: "...I'm inside, open your eyes (bom bom bom bom), I'm you!!!... sad but true."
I love this video. I love Justin’s visceral explanation about music on the jukebox and it relating to a fight. Many a bar fight was won or lost based on the music playing at the time. I could go on forever about this stuff… but his quick recognition of how music affects fights is poignant, honest, and he’s probably seen the effect in real life

@@-NemoMeImpuneLacessit Solved. Thank you (?).
Ppl said they'd sold out with Ride the Lightning...
Screw ppl! 😄
@@benjamindavis4974 i love the production on Justice! It's like a smashed bottle being held to your throat 😁🤘
Excellent stuff loved how you planned a pub fight to this soundtrack!
The Darkness is awesome live! I saw you at Jone’s Beach back in 2004. I went there to see the Beastie Boys live and The Darkness was also on the bill. I was blown away because you reminded me of all the rock/metal concerts I had seen as a teenager in the 1980’s. Can you do that “bouncing the pick off of your shoe” trick on Justin Hawkins Rides Again? That is such a bad ass trick! When I saw you do it, I had to rub my eyes because I thought I was seeing things. Haha! Also, awesome vocals on the VH songs at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert. (Also a huge Metallica fan.) Cheers.
I’ve never really been in to heavy rock, metal, etc. a lot of my mates were, I was into punk, alternative (I’m 58) but absolutely love JH and his videos, his honesty, humour, knowledge and general piss-taking is refreshing
The fight analogy had me in stitches (pun not intended)! The most Alan Partridge-esk review of a Metallica song that I think I've ever heard - love it.
Thanks for this analysis delivered mostly in sound effect form.
I also appreciate the fight choreography. I hope that they use your ideas in the next John Wick. 😉
Totally agree about Lars. He's one of the few metal drummers with a really deep pocket. He is a major reason for their accessibility and the bands commercial success. Like you say his parts are very memorable and honestly iconic.
or hes just a basic drummer. hasnt advanced in skill at all.
Down hill if anything, keep having to stop songs half way through because he keeps fudging up. It must be embarrassing for the rest of the band when you have thousands of fans who have paid good money to watch them!!!
His pocket is all over the place. He plays for the song, but his "meter" is terrible. All the complaints from drummers and fans alike aren't for nothing... it's also easy to prove.. I wish you lived up the street.. we could have a listening session.
Not that he hasn't done some great parts... under supervision.. he's like Peart. A,great team player. That makes up for a lot,
@ghost mall have you? :p
Sad but true is great because it's slow. Lars can hold his own as long as there's no need to play fast or, god have mercy on us.. play double bass. He's all over the place. just have a look at any live show. It's James who's holding the songs together when it comes to time keeping. his right hand is a f**ing metronome.
Lars being crap at drums technique doesn't take away from the drum patterns he composed and the song they wrote.
Now if you really want proof, just have a look at the few shows where Jordisson filled in. It's painfully obvious. There's probably a reason why he hasn't been asked to be a feature drummer by any band, despite his platinum hits :p
Success is never a good measure of good musicianship. there are tons of musicians better than those 4, but those 4 are the best at making Metallica music. right?
@@happyvalley6990 That's an irrelevant point people try to make. So what? (no pun intended) Where does it say drummers/musicians even have to get better and better? Has it occurred to you that Lars isn't in the game to become the best drummer on the planet? He wants to serve the song, and if that means do a basic drum beat then he's gonna do a basic drum beat. Stop giving this lame "he's the same level of talent he was 30 years ago" argument. It doesn't mean anything like you seem to think it does.
You are incredibly creative 😂 the picture you painted about the bar fight was hilarious
Saw them do this in Belgium this year.
Absolute gold.
