I have the pedal, it's a wonderful overdrive, especially for single coil guitars, its definitely more open sounding than TS styled overdrives. The switch in the down position subtracts a little of its mid range.
I know it’s very popular, just didn’t work for me, I’m giving up the new wampler germanium tumnus a go at the moment, I’ve tried klon style pedals before and not gone on with them but I want some more tonal options.
I have this pedal (new guitarist of a few years). To me, it sounds best going into another OD or overdriven amp. It’s more of a seasoning for other sounds as opposed to being the main component. But that’s just me.
It's bass and treble knobs is cut and boost, while on another pedals they are just cut. So in compare with another pedals center position of knobs will be 9 oclock, try it, maybe it will help
Kinda sounds like a Caline Pure Sky to me. The Pure Sky is half the price new but it lacks the switch so you have to use the controls to tame the woolliness. Just to give an idea of how good the Pure Sky is, it's on my board between one pedal that cost 10x its price and another that cost over 20x. If it dies unexpectedly I will definitely consider the mojomojo as a replacement.
Great work on the demo! This was my first OD pedal and I still have it. I think it excels at edge of breakup tones with the gain knob below noon and especially with single coil pickups.
I've found the best use for is it is barely on just adds a touch of grit and sweetens things, I think its great, not for everything and best combined with other drives and stuff, IMO anyway
@JasonWharton82 Definitely same, it does have a cool open sound which works with lower gain stuff. I keep the gain below like 10 O'clock, it does a sweet little zen drive/klon kind of thing but yeah gain cranked up is not good. Like you said, gets too wooly.
Ok, here's something to consider if you still have it. If you put a boost in front of it it sounds a million times better, specially with a Tube Screamer style pedal. It does better as the main dirt source on a clean amp, then boosting it. It'll tighten it up yet still keep things smooth.
Great video, thanks! I think you convinced me out of getting the MojoMojo though lol! I'm looking for a nice vintage overdrive pedal for a really sweet bluesy kind of tone that sounds like it's coming from a tube amp... any suggestions please?
Anything Marshall Bluesbreaker based really does it for me, lots of options on the market. Popular affordable ones would be the JHS morning glory, the MXR Duke of tone or just go straight to the source and pick up a reissued Marshall Bluesbreaker (that’s the one I have currently!).
Your clean tone sounds amazing. I like this pedal tone. Sounds very neutral to me. Transparent, as they say. Kind of a Klon type. I think it’s very useful. I’d call it a drive, not an overdrive. If you’re looking for distortion look elsewhere. But it gives grit when you dig in without changing your overall tone.
Currently using it as a boost into my SD-1. Damn it sounds good! And that is straight into a Quilter Phantom Block into my interface. Can't wait to hear it through the HRD.
I think using it as a boost is probably the best use case for it for me, you get the characteristics of the pedal you are boosting more than the mojo mojo but you add a nice bit of gain. I’m using a boss BP-1w into and SD-1 for the same.
@@JasonWharton82do you know, that it has active EQ, it means that center position of bass and treble knobs is a full amount in other pedals, turn left for cut, right for boost. Try this pedal with these knobs turn on 9 o'clock. Maybe it will help
Had one for quite some time, took it on tour and everything but it never really clicked with me, so I sold it after maybe 2 years. Very cool demo though, looking forward to more content!
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah for me there’s plenty of pedals that do the edge of break up thing AND chords so much better than this so I’ll be moving it on.
you hit the nail on the head, just picked this up and with this pedal a Les Paul and my Tungsten oxnard deluxe 12 watt tube amp.. I can get really close to the bluesbreaker/ Clapton sound
@@JasonWharton82 yeah, mojomojo ain't gonna work for you. Boss Blues Driver is probably what you're looking for. Most try to compare/ contrast the BB with the Tube Screamer, but the two go together like peaches and cream.
Not to be "that guy" but this pedal is meant for tubes and amps at rehearsal level volumes. Mine doesnt sound great on modeling amps or interfaces either. Edit , it can also just not be your gain type as you said. Its boomy and spongy nothing like a marshall or most common ODs work
I’m not sure tbh, I moved the pedal on as it really wasn’t for me, I imagine it would work better as a boost for me since I didn’t love its overdrive style.
That’s exactly what I use mine for. Boost. And it’s quite useful in that application….especially with medium output humbuckers. I play through tube amps exclusively….. an older Fender Blues Deluxe with a Celestion Gold speaker, a Hot Rod Deville 2x12, and/or a Blackstar HT100 head and 2x12 cab.
@@JasonWharton82 thank You for the insides. I got a bunch of drive pedals i really like, however i switched from tube preamp analog DI (closed 4x12) to digital. in short: i can make them work but i don't like em as i used too...
I mean, I would much prefer to do it all through a real tube amp and mic it up and everything but I just don’t have the space or noise capacity where I am right now so the easiest option is amp sims, I’d guess that was more common on UA-cam that you would think. I film in my front room too so I’d have to set up and break down every time I needed to film and it’s just not practical. I find the dream takes my favoured pedals pretty well.
Strings were changed on this guitar maybe a day before shooting this, in fact, in my video about Monty’s relic wax that came out a few days before you’ll see me cut the strings off.
Ive been to Paul Gilbert. He used it and everytime he turned it on, I have same complains as mentioned in this video. Either they pay him A LOT or Paul is tonedeaf😂
I have this pedal for 5 years, went to see Paul Gilbert. And still have not found good way to use it. Wooly, mushy with plasticy driven sound. There are much better pedals even in this price range.
my opinion: it is a good boost pedal but too tweak to work alone. it is cheap but it hide a bad secret: the footswitch is soldered directly on the pcb board and after some times it will suffer for faulty contacts.
@@JasonWharton82 it's best combo for me was the mojo in front of fuzz pedals or the mojo after a tube screamer... But in the end a used marshall guv'nor sounds much better
