Vintage Oberheim Matrix 12 Analog Synthesizer Sounds

- In this video, we check out the raw sound of Oberheim's Matrix-12, arguably the last great analog polysynth of the 1980s: a multi-timbral behemoth that packs the power of twelve modular synthesizers into a single instrument. To learn more about what makes the Matrix-12 so special, check out our blog Signal: www.perfectcir...
Closely related to the Oberheim Xpander, the Matrix-12 features twelve analog voices with digital control and digital memory. Each voice has two oscillators, a noise source, a 15-mode filter, two audio VCAs, five DADSR envelopes, five multi-mode LFOs/S&Hs, four ramp generators, three tracking generators...the list goes on. And perhaps most interestingly, it uses a digitally-controlled signal routing matrix to connect these internal modules to one another, recreating the experience and sound of a modular synthesizer without all the patch cables.
Additionally, each of the twelve voices' timbres can be defined independently, meaning that the Matrix-12 is a great machine for huge layered synth orchestras, evolving analog soundscapes, and dense forests of deeply modulated sound. With the opportunity to produce everything from classic Oberheim brass to self-playing generative noodles, the Matrix-12 is no doubt still one of the most powerful keyboard synthesizers ever made.

Oh maaan.. we had one of these in our church of all places, mid 80’s. Sheltered lad, no idea what I had in front of me. Great unit.
those church popes always know how make soul sheevering to goosebumps)))
@@neocortexlab church popes.
God should have enlightened you more.
alphabeets Indeed. They also had a Linn 9000 drum machine, and an Emu Emulator. But as a classical pianist, it all just sounded cheesy to my ears. Wish I knew then what I know now. :)
This synth belongs in a church enabling prayer and meditation with elegant 12 voice pads
One of The best poly analog synth ever made!
THE..
The Matrix 12 was always on my list of dream synths, pushed even further up after playing an Xpander in the early 2000's. I was delighted when Arturia released the Matrix 12V plugin and made this monster more accessible, in both price and interface. It definitely takes a few reads through the manual to understand the workflow, but it's worth the time investment.
When I first saw it and knew nothing about the original synth, I assumed it was digital. Finding out that it's an Oberheim Analog synth definitely surprised me nicely.
Great demo Perfect Circuit!!, just got mine off reverb, anyone considering it, it's totally worth it, nothing sounds like this, it's alive, something that most synths don't get. this sound is constantly moving and breathing, best heard in the Pads, don't be scared of the price, take a loan if you have to, the price of these are rising like crazy, so grab it before there's none left
Only $28,687.36 on Reverb right now ;-)
@@kimdiez2681 I ending up buying it in 2021, kept for 6 months before selling, it was amazing, used it for 2 albums and 2 sample packs, it's all over my you tube but I sold it and got the Modal 002 but still glad to have owned for a little while, got mine for 14k and sold for 13k
@TonySway that's a expensive bro you can buy a new car with that synthesizer
Oberheim is the elusive Unicorn in the synthesizer world, they all have a human soul trapped in a synthetic body
-Great lighting on the video, it pairs great with the handsome Matrix
is that really you in the avatar there?!? my God!! forget nerdy old synths.. go be a model.
Yeah, excellent contrast.
True, but the same is said of just about any classic analog synth! Thankfully, classics don't stop being classics when more people know about them! I will say that the Matrix-12 is like Oberheim's CS-80..... big, velocity and touch sensitive keyboard and *12 voices under matrix control!*
@@4711shaun2 because looks define what a person should do and be, not what they're genuinely interested in, right? you wouldn't have said the same to ciani in her "prime", would you?
@@turbochargedfilms all i'm saying is make the most of what you've got.. and it's pretty obvious i was tongue in cheek.. seriosly.. lighten the F. up!! No idea who ciani is..
I loved using the Xpander. I checked it out after seeing Nitzer Ebb use one live, mad amounts of bass. Thank you as always for sharing this with us :)
I saw Nitzer Ebb 4x between 1987 and 1992. I knew they used an Xpander and Roland System 100m but they never toured with either in a show that I witnessed. They always had 2 drummers and a few Akai S900/S950 samplers doing the synth stuff. I agree with you that they used an XPander but even live footage from that era never shows the Xpander on tour in shows. I'd love to be proven wrong, though!!
Just listen to it, it sounds alive!
♥️ Oberheim synths
such a mystery machine. the module even more so. still love that display nearly as much as the noise
The Oberheim Matrix-12 was heard in the song "It's Called a Heart" (1985).
Love it. Absolutely one of the best machines ever made. If I ever own one of these I'll be pinching myself.
an incredible machine. it sounds as much as it costs.
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the 1991 Saved by the Bell version of some song.
This thing is just pure vintage goodness straight out of the 80s and I love everything about it.
You can hear how perfect it is even from crappy phone speaker.
Compacted analog synthesis can hardly get any better, can it?
Yup, as others have said, this synth has been on my dream list since the 80s, along with the E-MU Emulator II, Fairlight CMI, and Prophet 5.
A synth with a soul.
In 1985 it’s features and user interface were revolutionary and every sound designer’s dream. I know it’s blasphemy but in 202x I‘m extremely happy with machines like Novation‘s Summit and its quasi modular mod matrix.
Just fantastic. I hope someone buys it and absolutely rinses it until it can be used no more! Too good to just sit at a collector's house!
I love how successful artists absolutely rave about the Xpander. Vince Clarke, Paul Hartnol, Chemical Brothers...they love it, they swear by it. However, if you put the beast of a Matrix 12 (same as an Xpander but double the polyphony) in front of a worldwide UA-cam audience, people complain that it doesn't sound like an Oberheim because it's not the OB-X. That's like saying a DX-1 doesn't sound like a Yamaha because it's not a CS-80. As for those that say it's too much of a pain to programme, well despite the fact Oberheim gave it a keyboard, this synth is not really designed for you keyboardists, sorry.
As a teen reading the Specs , i wondered how it might sound. Now i know. Thank You perfect circuit.
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the 1985 Kids Incorporated version of the song "Would I Lie to You?".
Yo.... That opening was beautiful
That first patch still gives me goosebumps. Someone ought to build a new one with a modern UI but the same sonic capabilities. What a beast.
Yes... that first patch was weird and wonderful!
My favorite! Excellent sounds, absolutely fantastic.
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the 1987/1989 Kidsongs versions of "The Circus is Coming to Town"/"Caissons Go Rolling Along".
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the 1990 Kidsongs version of the song "Here We Go Loopty Loo".
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the Kidsongs songs "The Ringmaster Song" (1987) and "The Lion Tamer" (1987).
We used the Xpander intensively on our Heavy Metal Drones album. The sounds are beautiful, as you can hear in the example it can stack sounds wonderfully well. The only drawback is that it is a pain to programme with that tiny screen.
One of those amazing sounding machines. It's got so much going on.
Big daddy oldie, as heavy as the Yamaha CS 200? The sound character almost feels like I'm back when. I honestly never played an Oberheim, had my eyes one of their rack versions for a bit. Only I may be more into the newer stuff these days. The gritty rough and tough sound is really cool
7:00 is such a nice sound. Its like c418
The Oberheim Matrix-12 brass was heard in the Kidsongs songs "Fast Food" (1990) and "We're Gonna Get Wet" (1990).
I’m absolutely in love with this poly analog synthesizer ❤
The is the synth that Rodney O said he used along with the Roland TR 808 to create the west coast hip hop classic “ Everlasting Bass”
Yes because the matrix 12 belonged to Egyptian lover . He had it posted on his Instagram a few months back
I love the interface on this one. Those displays look so cyberpunk. And the sound is immense and more versatile than the OB lineup. Oberheim was so ahead of their time with the Xpander and Matrix 12. Honestly prefer those ones to the OB-Xa, as much as that one is a beast too.
The displays are almost the best part, but it sounds great too!
Agree 100% everybody always raves about a obx a . I’d get a m12 before that any day . Of course I’d take both if I could 😂
Its kind of interesting to think where synths would be today if digital hadn't come along and been so dominant for so long. Right now, despite a decade of resergence in analogue gear on the market, and much more reliable analogue tech, we still seem to be in a place where the old gear still sounds a bit better in comparison.
Nostalgia has that effect.
I love the Matrix units. The M12 should be reissued. Please...
This thing looks actually wild
my dream synth since I started playing.........superb........and an amazing demo. respect.
Congratulations for being in the 10% of people who make a synth video without playing a single bad sound. So much movement and clarity in the notes. Such a ballsy idea for an 80's polysynth, im guessing the new hydrasynth is sort of a nod at this bad boy but it doesn't come close in terms of sound. Are these all presets or did you make them? They all sound lovely
This is a mix of presets and sounds that we made
had to come back, needed to hear some engulfing surrounding sounds, this demo does the medicine, that heavy grit reminds me of some meditative stoner metal guitar lose oneself
dream synth
It's so beautiful!
A thing of beauty
They're one of the best vintage analog polys you can own and i lusted after one for years but could.never find a decent one even when they were going for the same.price as a prophet 6. There were two revisions (maybe more) that i know of. One of them had a multi out board at the rear, so you could have all 12 voices going to different places.
In essence, at current prices, plus the need for parts (those fluorescent displays aren't cheap, and if the motherboard goes wonky you've had it) , the moog one should give you as much , if not more fun.
Affordable. No. Glorious. Yes.
The M12 was used for Mark Isham's song "On The Threshold of Liberty." It's used pretty much on every track of Vapor Drawings; a landmark album.
Wow! Very interesting. I really love that song.
I’ll take this over a Jupiter 8 thanks. Just my taste.
as a Jupiter-8 owner I can't argue....the Matrix goes to places the Jupiter can't. I have a TVP but still, the desire for a obie poly is high on my list.
I can understand the (senti)mentality there. The Jupiter 8, like so many of its contemporaries, is awesome but “just a performance synthesizer“. The premise of these models is that you’ve got the essence of modular in tandem with the performance part.
The Jupiter 8 has more warmth. The M12 has nearly endless possibilities but the overall sound is quite clinical.
Sir Taki How musical taste can differ! For me the M-12 sounds warmer than the JP-8, which has a rather tinny touch IMHO.
Hahhaha that's why i just landed on this vid
Not likely to even get my paws on the Xpander, let alone this girthy monster, I do feel thankful just to own a Matrix 1000 and select from its presets.
Wouldn’t it be great if Tom Oberheim collaborated again with Dave Smith, this time creating an instrument with some of the Matrix’ capabilities bundled in? If it was like the OB-6 with 4 virtual patch destinations, it would almost be like the microKorg with analog tone generators. Call it the OBMatrix or similar.
So warm and also sizzling. I love this synth. I want one, Behringer where's a reissue?
Arturia makes a VST version. It's obviously not as good as the real thing, but it's passable.
i loved that part at 12:00 and forward
The Oberheim Matrix-12 is the keyboard version of the Oberheim Xpander.
Not really, there are big differences, for example polyphony 6 vs 12, LFOs, etc.
@@M80-The Oberheim Xpander was made in 1984 and released in 1984 and the Oberheim Matrix-12 was made in 1985 and released in 1985.
The M-12 really sounds best in stereo with voice panning. I remember having a chance to buy one of these decades ago at a music store for $750. The aftertouch was broken and some keys didn't work.
Greatest Synth ever made in my opinion!
Now if only Tom would come out with a modern day take on the Matrix 12.....hmmmmmm
You know how much that will cost :)
@@Barefoot_Joe everything D:
He hasn't even given us a reissue OB-X yet! :)
As I wrote in my own comment, I think it would be a question of Tom and Dave Smith putting their heads together again and creating a modified version of the OB6 with the addition of just four virtual patch destinations as in the MS2000 or microKorg. Would not necessarily be on the same level as this model, but it would be the next best thing.
Yeah, that way it will cost 8-10 grand, (putting it into Moog One territory) and then legions of hipsters will piss and moan that it's too big and heavy, and should only be 500 bucks. Afterwards, these same idiots will take to social media to announce that "they're going to wait for the Behringer version". I think Behringer is lowering the bar for quality and doing a bit of damage to the synthesizer industry. They keep pumping out these 250-500 dollar modules and clones, and with today's "Starbucks laptop artists" being cheap bastards, you can begin to see where the old pioneers may be running into issues. Don't get me wrong, I think the Moog One is a bit outrageous even by today's standards - $8000 is what a Yamaha CS-80 went for in 1977!
God I love this synth. NI Retro Machines mk2 has a decent version that I go to often.
Best demo from you guys good job
Classic beautiful sounding analog synth, and at $10k it's cheaper than building 12 modular synths.
I saw one for sale at 4k couple years back...
$10k... Sounds like one (fully featured sequencer based) modular synth to me.
i have never heard such satisfying sounds from a synth. behringer needs to immediately drop all production until they reverse engineer this baby and sell them for $900
Great playing in the opening
Man... 1:55 ,min mark. That modulation is THICK! SOUNDS UNREAL
feels. so good.
god tier synth 🔥
This sounds so good! Is there a remake coming out??
Is there a preset on the Martrix-12V for the sound you are playing at 4:25?
Played an OB-8 at flying Z ..on long island...;)
just superb sound :-)
For the very first patch in the demo, does anyone know if there's a preset for that in Arturia's Matrix 12 (if so, I don't seem to have been able to find it)? I would love to know how that sound was prgrammed.
My dream!
Wow, what a beast! 💪
Now I want one! 😎
Obies rule...I have a matrix 6 and 1000...they're great but not in the same league as the 12..though they still have that obie sound..they're still available out there
I myself could only dream of owning this particular model. I feel amazed that I snagged a Matrix 1000 myself.
Skinny Puppy used this nice-sounding synth, and...what is that melody, I've heard this before
I wonder if Boards of Canada uses this synthesizer?🎹🎧💫😵👌😎👍
Probably not.
I think the rack mount version/Xpander version of this was heavily used on The Downward Spiral by NIN.
Pretty Hate Machine, more like it. Trent used a PPG Wave, Minimoog, and Xpander on his first record. He went more to computer based, sampling methods with Downward Spiral. Less analog synth driven on Downward. Although the Minimoog came along for the ride throughout his entire career.
The Xpander isn't rack mountable. It's almost the width of the Matrix 12 : )
@@cornerliston I think he meant desktop non-keyboard version. If someone made a rackmount Xpander clone today (looking at you Black Corporation! The guys who made Deckard's Dream) I think I would figure out a way to finance it. Would be so. fucking. cool.
corner liston right! I was thinking of the OBmx I think, which was also rumored to be used on the album.
You'd never know it with all the other distortion and noise. Don't get me wrong, I liked NIN back in the day, but always wished I'd hear more synths rather than the screaming and thrashing.
Arturia V collection brought me here
Okay Behringer - hope you're taking copious notes!
Oberheim The British sci-fi sounds for off world and future B-movie effects.
Damn, didn't know of this synth's existence. Sounds incredible! How much did they sell for when they were first released?
Are you hinting that you have a time machine? If so, can I go too?
$6400 in 1985
oozes quality and yet used on surprisingly few records.always wanted one....and yet im not kean on the prophet 5 (good but not that good)and thats all over recordings.if i were a rich man its this or the baloran river
1:54 the kind of sound I think of when I think of The mighty Oberheim!
Came here to make this comment, and realized I already had🤣 Anyway, all is proper. A good synth should sound like it's about electrocute you.
Finally you produced a good demo of a synth.
Oh please tell me someone is about to reissue this too!!!!!!
im pretty sure they made this video just because they have one in stock.
