It's been 6 years since this video came out and I still listen to it once or twice a year.
Oh to play such a magnificent beast and to drown into modulations, splits, layers and seemingly unknown filter modes...
Simply the most beautiful synth ever made !

Perhaps the best thing about the Oberheims is that each voice can be panned in stereo space, so when the voices are all in their own little corner and you play a chord......... well....... it'll bring a fawkin' tear to your eye!

@@danalexpiano it is just one more thing that makes this synth so special. We used a Matrix 6 for many years, mainly for silky pads and washes, and found a mint 12 later on in Berlin going for 1200€ and bought it immediately. Upon getting it back to London, we opened it up and found that it needed repairs and maintenance. Now, it sits pride of place in our studios. It gets used on a frequent basis.
      Love it.

A friend of mine back in late 90's started to buy all the analog synth people were literally dropping in the trash. He visited the studios and collected them, his mom was laughing, I thought he had some mental disease. Today, his collection may be the biggest and most expensive and all of them works. He has at least 6 Matrix 12 and several Xpanders, 11 Jupiter 8, he has a basement with all of them. All in working condition. He has one Mac 9600 with Protools and PCI cards all working. He started to sell the synths on eBay when he needs money, they are his retirement plan. He has well over 200 synths easily.

I have all the vst stuff .. as someone who sits at a computer all day at work. I’d prefer the real hardware analog unit to touch and play, not click a mouse. I use mostly analog synths but. The vsts do have there place sometimes. I just rather use analog. Not an elitist just rather touch and use the real instrument. It’s way more Inspiring. Although vsts have come along way it’s just not the same. To each there own though. Gotta use what works best for you. Cheers 🍻

@@electrowayne2918 Hey, I totally get that. But the combination of hardware (Proteus 2000 that thinks it's an Orbit-3, Electribe MX, AN1x and EX5, together with an Arturia KeyLab 61 mk II and the V-Collection is rather nice. The KeyLab integrates well with the software, and the software doesn't break as soon as you look at it, as is often the case with gear that's over 40 years old. There's a Solina in there, and a Matrix-12, and a CS-80... all that kind of gear that you really, really don't want to have to maintain.
Disclaimer: I'm still in the process of building it all together, and the AN1x and EX5 are still in a different part of the house.

You know how people talk about that Oberheim sound? It is hard to describe, but Obies just sound musical no matter what you're playing. They just have a quality, a dynamic, about their sound that sounds like a real full sounding instrument. Michel Doidic and Marcus Ryle really new what they were doing. The only other synth that reminds me of the Matrix 12 is the Rhodes Chroma. It is a beautiful machine that I hope to own one day the M12.

I’m new to subtractive synthesis and I have a hard time understanding the difference between the Matrix 12 and the Xpander. Does the 12 vs 6 voices mean that as long as I press down just 6 keys on the keyboard they sound the same? I’m about to get an Xpander possible, and when I listen to demos online I want to know if the Matrix 12 sound is the same as the Xpander: there are way less demos of the Xpander in comparison.

    • @luisneitzke106

Yes, BUT if you have a long envelope (sustain, release, etc.) on a sound that ends up being 3 seconds long and you play 6 more notes after 2 seconds, the first 6 will cut out prematurely. Voice stealing.

@@joemcm1 IMO, I would pick the Matrix 12 over the Synthex (to compliment a JP-8). The synthex is one of my favorites of all time, but if you consider how much more advanced the M12 is (it came out almost ~5 years after JP-8). It has features that reflected the advancements of that time. For example, it has an extremely extensive mod matrix, many more filter types, 5 envelopes, 5 lfos, panning, patch per voice assignment, etc... My point is that the matrix 12 can go places the other 2 cant. So you'd be able to cover a wider sonic palette with the JP-8 & M12.

Actually, it is the same as 2 Xpanders. The 6/1000 isn't supposed to be a "simpler" version of the 12. They share the same family name because said family of synthesizers is all about the mod matrix, but the Matrix-12 is a VCO monster related to the Xpander.
That said, as the owner of an OB-Xa, I think there are enough good things in both synths to simply enjoy them for what they are.

You can do two things; assign an analogue sequencer to each voice for linked arpeggio - OR use a patchbay to synchronise the modulation and filters with another analog synth by feeding them both the same external VCO from either assigned as master.
The latter stabilises drift, but in my opinion it hardly ever got used..
..Unless you were Jean Michel Jarre.
We never ever use(d) it. No need now with Cubase and Protools.

Andy Mcnab You can’t really compare a MiniMoog to a Matrix 12. They’re two different classes of synths. I would never choose the Matrix over a MiniMoog for synth bass sounds. You obviously can’t use the MiniMoog for pads unless you plan on overdubbing single notes. You can definitely have the argument over Prophets, Jupiters and the Matrix and no matter which you preferred, you wouldn’t be wrong.

Lot's of people get very exited on all those analog synths, where as the truth and reality is that we live in 2019 and VST's like Omnisphere II or Sylenth with high quality DAC's (I don't talk RME crap) simply sound waaay fatter and better than any analog. My first synth was an SH2000 back in those days...so I dare to state this. So please stop the myth. Wake up. The only value to an M12 and old analogs is the collectors value. It's the same like guitar freaks pretending old guitars sound better...sure. Musically ? First of all 97% of the majority listens to low quality compressed MP3. On top, and even in FLAC format, tests have proven that even skilled people can't tell in a final production whatever synth, analog or digital were used.

Hmm I have both analog synths like Juno-60 or Matrix6 and software synths like Omnisphere or Serum, and I also like the sound of these modern plugins, but I couldn´t find a sound that is like the Moog Sub37 for example, especially with all the parameters that you can tweak live to alter the sound. I mean listen to Stephan Bodzin for example, how could he do it with a plugin? Not possible, and I think it´s quite obvious also for normal listeners. Plus, there is also still a big group of people coming from a live music background, who need real intruments on stage. I play a Juno-60 live, and it was not possible to achieve a sound, reliability and haptic quality ike that with a MacBook on stage (which I did before), besides it just looks much nicer ;)
Last but not least, people get inspired by these old machines that have a history, which is reflected in the way of playing again.

Personally I like the thiner sound. Being fat is all the rage today. To me the vintage stuff sounds pure. All depends on what you are going for. A lot of the music today is so clean and cinematic it bothers me
