The sound and theme of Aquarium in Deep Space is bigger than you even imagine. If it had appeared in the right context, it could have been as iconic as the greatest themes in film, as great as the greats, like Chinatown or Blade Runner, or any of them. It says so much in the short time it develops, so much truth and caracter and soul, that it can't be regarded as anything less that any of the others, and the only thing keeping it from riding that same wave is simply context. Just know that it is apprecated at its true value. Thank you for creating it.
I love the Matrix-12. I had one in the late 80's and it never ceased to amaze me. I traded it in on a Korg 01/Wfd. I don't know what I was thinking. I have regreted that all these years. There is not another keyboard that can touch the Matrix-12 except maybe the SEM 8-voice. Great video!
I already commented in the past, but again... This is so beautiful, and thanks to you, today I use my Oberheim Xpander AND Eventide H3500B-DFX (maxxed out H3000S, via EPROMs swap) every single day.
I had a chance to watch all your Matrix-12 videos, and I am beyond impressed over your playing skills. You really make the Matrix-12 sound better than all the other demo's I've seen. Thank you :)
Sometimes i back in this video to enjoy the Aquarium in deep space sound..is stunning, i wish to have a Matrix 12 but is only a waste of money today, no sense price, i recreated it with my ob-x8 and 3rd wave but is not really the same ...what reverb did u used Eventide?? Ciao!
These are really great videos you do with the matrix 12. The music you play is great too! We would love to see and hear more of your incredible Matrix 12.
I remember when they were blowing these out for less than 1200 at the music store cause everyone wanted realistic piano and sample sounds.if i could only go back in time...
I have played, owned and tried out (at friends' places) various synths over the years. Of all (semi-) analogue synths, the ones that have impressed me most by their sheer sound, are the Matrix 12 and the P.P.G. Wave 2.0 (the oldest iteration, 4 voices only with analogue filters). Both were exceptionally beautifully sounding. Matrix 12 was hard to program, but certain sounds were beyond beautiful, and while VSTs can make to sound similar on the surface, they invariably lack depth and physical presence. Mostly charm also... Look how a relatively simple 4- voice like the new Korg Minilogue delights synth guys all over the world. It takes a modest analogue to make the most sophisticated VSTs pale in comparision... At least in my experience (since 1993).
Wow, 10 years later now and i picked up a Oberheim Xpander just yesterday. Only half a Matrix-12, but close. This video came up in my suggestions (again) and completely forgot i commented on it.
This thinking sounds amazing! Equally amazing is the quality of your playing. You did a flawless job of putting these sounds into a very musical context. Great job!
Hi Paul, are these stock sounds? I'm about to pull the trigger on an Oberheim Xpander and I absolutely love these sounds. Thanks for all the wonderful content!
Synth programming is a strange and fascinating activity. So many options, really is art and science to it. I programmed lots on an 01/WFD for many hours, still only scratched the surface.

sounds really fantastic. Damn, I feel my economy soon will take a severe dip! But not to forgot the hands who plays - great work!
Ha, NOW i see the small print "FX: Eventide H3000". Now, I'm not saying the Matrix 12 isn't amazing (it certainly is) but anybody judging the synth from this vid alone needs to realize they are really hearing a Matrix 12 PLUS the greatest FX box ever created. In other words, in no way the same as a Matrix by itself.
+Michael Arthur Holloway Second that. I've got an H3000 and it really makes every synth shine. The live engineer of my band also stated "I know the sounds of your Prophet 5 very well, but with that H3000 it's a whole different story"
I'd argue the Lexicon 224 or 480L is probably more flattering for synthesizers. Or a Lexicon PCM 70. Not tearing down the H3000, which I also love, but there are plenty of high end effects units that can make synths shine. AMS RMX 16 or a Quantec for example.
Synths are used a lot but usually in a supporting role to guitar/vocals/drums/acoustic instruments. Rarely are they a key instrument in a piece. With possible exception of soundtracks.

Wonderful sounds! :) My all time unreachable favorite. Always wanted to have this kind of great sounds. Now i can have many of them from my Zebra, the nearest match in softsynth world. Diva could get closer about the sounds with the new filter emulation, but i prefer Zebra with so many open possibilities.
No VST will ever compete with a real Matrix 12 but then the VST will not overheat and breakdown continuously. This is my experience. It is a true King of Analogues though.
Michael Arthur Holloway Thank you, "Aquarium in Deep Space" is my composition, and was named by a viewer of this channel - it was originally "Minimoog and Source" from this video: ua-cam.com/video/ehcEBhNLuxo/v-deo.html
Never heard a sound like Glass Vox on a analogue synth... wonder how to do it and if my Matrix 6 would be able to capture it... I'd have to think long how to get it...
IIRC it's a slightly modified vox patch. The analog voices / choir sound on the Matrix-12 is the best I've ever heard on any analog synth. I'll try to remember to look up the main parameters and post them here
SynthMania Is what you played at 1:20 part of a real song or is it a improv? I swear I have heard that before but cannot for the life of me figure out where.
Virus T1 dont have the warmth and fatness, its quite digital sounding, not that its a bad thing as its a quite capable machine, i dont like the price tho.
Dear Synthmania... Do you by chance have the Matrix 12 factory preset files? By accident I have erased the memory on my Matrix 12 and lost all sounds. Best regards

Gotta agree. Incredible sound - abolutely amazing. The first thing it reminded me of was "The Big Blue"...
So true!!!
Bero Bujanovi..there's always one isn't there? (

Came back to this one again. Man, that "Aquarium in Deep Space" gets me every time.
Pete Brown I was amazed to recognize that sound as “Multi I” in my Ensoniq EPS sample library.
Seems like it was sampled from the Matrix 12.
I wonder which preset it is… since it showed up as a sampled preset on the Ensoniq later on…
Oberheim Matrix-12 - best synth ever!!!
Since years i come here for my weekly dose of Matrix 12. I´m an addict!
2:05 that sound so much like SNES The legend of zelda paralel worlds
I already commented in the past, but again... This is so beautiful, and thanks to you, today I use my Oberheim Xpander AND Eventide H3500B-DFX (maxxed out H3000S, via EPROMs swap) every single day.
Aquarium in deep space was among the most beautyful synthsounds I have ever heard
such a good trip down memory lane! thank you for sharing your love for synthesizers and their classic anthems with us!
I had a chance to watch all your Matrix-12 videos, and I am beyond impressed over your playing skills. You really make the Matrix-12 sound better than all the other demo's I've seen. Thank you :)
Wow, thanks!
That eventide is probably adding a ton of beautiful color to those patches.
6:50 Reminds me of Actraiser, when you are in the sky ;)
Love this video. Just listening on the iPad and I'm drawn into synth heaven. God bless you
Great demos SynthMania. Don't ever hang up your fingers!
Not only are the sounds wonderful, you’re playing suits it perfectly.

Best gorgeous strings I've ever heard! Thank you!
I've got the Arturia emulation of the Matrix-12 and I enjoy it very much.
What a marvelous sound. I’m happy for you that you have one of these! I wish I will afford one myself one day, if I find one.
One of the best... Love the patches!
I remember when they were blowing these out for less than 1200 at the music store cause everyone wanted realistic piano and sample sounds.if i could only go back in time...
You can always get the Arturia software synthesiser. Takes up less space, too.

That "Aquarium In Deep Space" patch is amazing man.. any chance we can get a tutorial on how you created it? Would love to see that
Please please
Wow no reply after 6 years.
Its probably a preset
The Best Synthesizer for melodic sounds.
That smooth multi modulated sound is hallmark!
Amazing sounds! I wish i had a Matrix12 to use in my music!
Wow, 10 years later now and i picked up a Oberheim Xpander just yesterday. Only half a Matrix-12, but close.

I so much love this. Thank you.
My favorite synth. It looks so nice.
What a fantastic sounding instrument. The Vivaldian patch is just HUGE!
2:50 amayzing sound !!!
What a fucking wonderful machine!
What a difference programming makes! Saw another Matrix 12 video here on the Yoot Ooobs and thought I was listening to a Casio.
It's using the Eventide H3000 FX, huuuuuge part of the sound
Came here to listen to Aquarium in Deep Space as I was getting ready work. Truly a sonic masterpiece!
This thinking sounds amazing! Equally amazing is the quality of your playing. You did a flawless job of putting these sounds into a very musical context. Great job!
Those strings are like a big warm hug! :)
what an amazing sound
Wouaw... J'en veux un :-D Magnifique Synthétiseur digne de ce nom... On en fait plus des comme ça...
beautiful patches
Thank you, Pete
SynthMania I keep coming back because of Aquarium in Deep Space. Amazing.
Pete Brown lol. Just realized this isn't the *first* time I've come back and been struck by that one patch.
+Pete Brown Me too ! ;)
I'm here for 20th time . please do a long version of Aquarium in Deep Space with the same patch.
This should be played at my funeral.
Hi Paul, are these stock sounds? I'm about to pull the trigger on an Oberheim Xpander and I absolutely love these sounds. Thanks for all the wonderful content!
The ultimate 80's soundtrack production synth, in my opinion...
I think I'm in love with this synth...but my Waldorf Q+ does these sounds and waaaay more...it's a beast as well.
Different strokes.
Yeah different strokes.

Yep, it's probably my favourite piece of signal processing gear ever. It still sounds amazing after all these years.

"Aquarium in Deep Space" has always been my favorite song since this video was uploaded.
love the matrix!
i never new this unit existed.....what albums has this unit been on....wow....good for movies.
Gorgeous.
Thank you! Cheers!
This synth marked the end of an era. Never had a poly synth sounded better.
WOW - it sounds AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First minute is awesome!! (didnt hear the rest yet)
The best analog sound synth,
tutto un altro pianeta...che synth !!
Anybody know where to find the factory multi patches online? Great demo!
Nice, also here. Keep coming back this Aquarium tune
Lovely, thank you.
As of August 2018 - Switched On is now asking 12k for one of these. I remember saying no to one for $1,500 just a few years ago
An astounding sound ;-)
Old but new ❤🔥
Nice sounds and nice improvisation. That's why no thumb down !
Приятные пэды,мягкие!! Надо попробовать этот синт++++++++aquarium super sound!!!
Synthesisers are still not given the respect they rightly deserve. A well programmed and played synth has such power.
Yes because guitars and acoustic instruments are given more respect and prominence. The number of synth artists is not that many compared to others.
Synths are used a lot but usually in a supporting role to guitar/vocals/drums/acoustic instruments. Rarely are they a key instrument in a piece.

Wonderful sounds! :)

Nice! Please Share the Aquarium in Deep Space Patch! :)
Building the perfect beast! ;) (analog for instance).
Are these patches for sale/download anywhere?!
I’d pay money for these
The first minute says Bladerunner meets Clockwork Orange.
Lovely
made my day :p
Wonderful instrument and performance. What song are you playing during the "Aquarium in Space" section?
Michael Arthur Holloway Thank you, "Aquarium in Deep Space" is my composition, and was named by a viewer of this channel - it was originally "Minimoog and Source" from this video: ua-cam.com/video/ehcEBhNLuxo/v-deo.html
Never heard a sound like Glass Vox on a analogue synth... wonder how to do it and if my Matrix 6 would be able to capture it... I'd have to think long how to get it...
sounds pretty like the itopia sample on later yamaha synths...

that would be great.
@SynthMania please post
Made me think of Brian Eno - By This River
is glass vox an original piece? sounds incredible. also what is that patch made up of? PWM?
can you get these presets on the xpander?
Amazing. What was the first song you played in the video?
yes, that's it!! thx
SynthMania Is what you played at 1:20 part of a real song or is it a improv?
I swear I have heard that before but cannot for the life of me figure out where.
It's just an improvisation
SynthMania Wow! Just sounded really familiar to me, Very beautiful. Mind if I made a song out of it? (I myself am a beginning electronic musician)
SynthMania I am very impressed, damn you should just do videos of improvs.
It sounded like a particular Lisa Lisa song: v=z-fSv9jClCw .
Same here, I know i've heard these notes somewhere in a movie. It's driving me nuts.
Sounds like an orchestra!
I am a fellow Matrix 12 owner. Could I pay you for your patches?
First track is Recoil first album, right ?
I don't see these patches in my Arturia Matrix-12 Vst. Is there any way i can get these ?
Хочется найти сэмплы звуков Oberheim matrix или его VST эмулятор. Есть ли такое где - нибудь?
I rather like the sounds of these patches. It has the futuristic ambience I loved in Jean Michel Jarre's albums.
Very nice. What type of speakers and amp do you run it through?
Thank you - I have several: BK ST-140, Tyler MM5X, JBL 308, KRK Rokit 8
Thanks SynthMania.
Are you using a sustain pedal?
Yes
who sells this board ? I bet its a small fortune lol
I have Virus TI, and very hard time to get something like this, any help guys :( ? Beautiful sounds btw!
to get something like this is no virus business, sorry
Virus T1 dont have the warmth and fatness, its quite digital sounding, not that its a bad thing as its a quite capable machine, i dont like the price tho.
I cant believe the vst version is out, I need a midi keyboard and just bought a dog :(
Dear Synthmania... Do you by chance have the Matrix 12 factory preset files? By accident I have erased the memory on my Matrix 12 and lost all sounds. Best regards
I think I do have them somewhere on disk drive, please send me an email from the about page and I'll send them to you
The Vivalidian reminds me very much of Wendy Carlos.
Would you care to sell/share your patches ?
Like arturia matrix plugin, same ❤
I THINK ERASURE USED AN EXPANDER SOMETIME
このシンセサイザー、購入予定です!
Matrix-12 is the perfect complement to the Jupiter-6. I'll never sell any of them
Beginning remind "Music Is Math")
Well, the inserted effects add a little bit of "salt&pepper".
