    Superb video. Going out tomorrow will be trying out the cormorants. Been fishing for 45 years for everything with fins recently took up stillwater trout due to ill health. These vids give me the same feeling i got as a kid reading the angling times and then all excited to try things out. Amazing really to get that buzz still.
    You have a way of presenting things that really engages the person watching Thanks mate.

    A truly beautiful setting my friend.We in Alberta Canada have a similar lake called Boulder reservoir .It is stalked every year with great fishing. The lake was a creation of a company who purchased the rock quarry and out of their own pocket created this reservoir for all Albertans to enjoy. They are sticking to a no camping /day use only and I think that's wonderful.We need more day use areas in Alberta. Thank you for showing your perfect little spot.

    thanks for the video. I have found your insights helpful for still water.
    I do have to say that what I can only describe as a "fishing park" is quite foreign to us anglers out here in the PNW (Washington State, USA)

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  3 роки тому +1

      Its almost the opposite in the uk. We have such a great variety of small and large stillwaters that it makes up the bulk of a uk anglers fishing. That together with a lack of rivers (or accesibility to them) drives that direction of our angling so much more.

    • @TightLinesNW
      @TightLinesNW 3 роки тому

      @@RhysFishes that makes sense. I've fished lakes here deep for decades. Typically trolling for trout with wedding rings or a spinner on a conventional spinning reel set-up. Fly fishing our deeper lakes has proven difficult. Many of the lakes i love to fish are small but quite deep. Do you fish full sinking line much? There are times I need to target fish 20 feet or deeper.

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  3 роки тому

      @@TightLinesNW yes, on the deeper lakes we commonly fish in water 50ft deep. Most of the time that means Di7/8 lines and FABS or Booby flies. It's almost the standard for us in winter and the height of summer (if the upper columns of water get to warm)

    Yes you are a skilled and talented angler. It is your love of the sport that shines throughout all of your vlogs. To the guys who fish a handful of times a season same fishery same fly same method. Every year. Complaining that. Oh if fished several times a week at loads of different venues then I would be just as good! NO! If they still only use the same method fly ect in only perfect conditions. They do not learn or change. Then nothing changes. You properly prepare and plan your day. Every second on the water is a learning curve. Read the conditions. Learn and hone the skills. Concentrate and adapting to changing conditions. Water temperature relative air temperature wind speed light conditions what food sources are how where and what are the fish doing are you simulating a food item or provoking an attack/ territorial response? Are you on or by the water for a pleasant day out. No interest is competing. To the last part I call BS every moment you are actively fishing. If not involved in a match as a individual or team member. Then you are competing against the fish. More importantly in the long run you should be competing against yourself. Maintaining and improving on your skill and knowledge base. You shine a light onto the path that actually helps us all. No matter what is the stage of our experience. Please just keep up the quality of your channel. Every positive step is a poke in the eye of the anti angling groups.

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  3 роки тому +1

      7lb airflo is usually ok on a 3 fly leader from my experience. It might have just been that the takes were that aggresive that the only viable option was to increase the leader strength. I know some anglers will fish as strong as 12lb on some of the bigger resi's when buzzer fishing.

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  3 роки тому +1

      It will happen to some extent based on how heavy the flies are below it. 3 varnished buzzers and fishing dead stactic will pull the tip of the line down. Mucilin can help but eventually they'll get pulled down anyway because of the flies. I don't mind if it happens a bit but it will affect your ability to see the end of the line

    Hi rhys, I have a question. So currently I fish a 6/7wt fly rod with WF7 line. I use mostly jsut wet flies but sometimes like to fish lures. I’m wanting a new fly rod and most rods are either 6wt or 7 wt not both 6/7wt rating. I was wondering if getting a 6wt will still cast lures like yellow dancer , and other bead head lures and cat whiskers fine?
    Also what is the vision still maniac like overall?
    Thanks mate

      A 6wt will cast lures just not as well as a 7wt. The stillamaniac is lovely with the 6 being light and soft. The 7 is much stiffer but good for pulling! Buying a rod is a lot about budget really. A scierr srx 2 is a nice all rounder too

      @@gus_mcg hi mate, ive a Greys GR60 10ft 7wt. Great stillwater rod for pulling wets and lures, very happy with it. For stillwater dry fly i use a Vision Onki 10ft 6wt which is incredible. A really fantastic rod for dry fly use. Extremely light and bends well into thr butt.
      Also have an 9ft 5wt GR50 for the river which is a lovely rod but now retired as I've upgraded.

      @@fowlerfishing7137 hi, as a matter of fact I acc had been looking at the gr60 and have decided that’s the rod I am going for. I’m going for the 9ft6 7wt. As thats what I currrntly fish and covers all types of flies to fish for me no problem

    What leader are you using with the buzzers, breaking strain and make ?

    Hi Rhys,
    I thought you used the Agility 2 rods?
    Question: would you go to a 5wt for nymphs / buzzers if they were up in the water? Would it be the same answer for both small waters and reservoir from a boat

      I've switched across to the visions the past few months, they are great rods. 6 or 7s i generally stick with on resi's and small stillwaters. 5's can work but you won't be able control the fish as well as you would with a heavier outfit.

    Do you have to go to a trout fishery? why not just go down to a natural river or lake somewhere?

      I don't have to go, I choose to go. But if you check my channel, you'll find plenty of natural river videos if that's your thing. Tightlines 🎣

      And there's no mandatory winter close season on stillwaters 😊 each has it's own place and strengths/attractions.

    I wouldn’t enjoy fishing this water, too artificial!
    It doesn’t make a difference if the fish are a pound or ten pounds, they are just stickies.

      You clearly watched a video of it and hopefully learnt something useful from a total fishing genius for when you do fish a water you do find acceptable. So everyone gets a win. But why slap down something that gives a lot of people pleasure many of whom also fish rivers and some who don't have great mobility to do so.

    Hi, what rod weight would you recommend for Stillwater fly fishing, I was thing maybe a 7/8 weight but I’m not really sure.
