Hi Andy With moving away from the Midlands and huge changes in my life it’s been a while since I’ve even thought about trout fishing but in the middle of Cornwall I’ve found a amazing river with some beautiful tiny bars of gold but I’ve tried everything to catch one apart from using tiny mepps I’ve had no look on fly this video clearly shows the need for stealthy fishing hope you both well regards Dave
A lovely video Andy - really enjoyed - I fish the Lathkill further upstream than this - it isn't as secluded as this beat looks to be so we have to be a bit choosy on when we fish but it is delightful fishing albeit challenging - If you get back to Hampshire again I can highly recommend Beat 3 on the Dever at Bullington downstream from where you fished - hut at top of the beat and a path through woodland to the bottom - not sure if I posted that on your chalkstream series - I definitely agree that a stealthy approach with accurate delicate casting is essential on these type of waters - more important I think than the actual pattern (within reason of course) - Thanks - Steve.
Hi Steve, thanks for watching! I've not seen all of the river further up, does it look similar to this? We might possibly go back down to the chalk this summer, we're not sure yet, if we do we'll check out that beat. I think delicate is absolutely the word, approach, delivery, false casting - it's all got to be delicate - there were plenty of times I wasn't!
@@IBandAndyFishing - Hi Andy - I fish the stretch upstream of Conksbury Bridge and we go up as far as the source through the Dale - the stretch upstream of the bridge is similar but there are numerous weirs installed years ago which keep the depth of the river fishable - the further you go up the narrower and "smaller" the river becomes - some members have fished Tenkara tactics there but I have kept to the weir section which is dry fly only - public footpaths near to the river hence the need to be a bit choosy on times and it became virtually unfishable last summer due to picnickers and swimmers / boaters in the daytime limiting us to the last hour or so of daylight - or early morning before others turned up - as an aside the amount of litter left last summer was disgraceful and the parking so inconsiderate - the river actually goes underground at low water levels further upstream - I remember a school visit to the area on that subject - Simon C. is the man to advise on chalkstreams - I have Bullington booked in September rolled over from last year - and Dunbridge which is a lovely tributary of the Test near Stockbridge - September is a good month as it is that bit cooler and plenty of fly life still - Tight Lines - Steve.
Loved this. Watched it after being at the lathkill myself today. That horrible rain didn’t stop the fish hammering the mayfly that was hatching. Lost three in a hour until it dried up and the risers began to stop. Will be taking a longer rod and leader next time I’m there!
Very long leaders are the key lesson for me. Getting turnover on small rivers is certainly not easy, but well worth a try. Learned a lot from that vlog Andy
Great video again Andy👍.The lathkill is a stunning place. I was on the wye last week, there was nothing rising so prospecting was the way to go. Your caddis was very effective.
Hi Andy - unfortunately DK's small rivers and lakes are suffering from comorants great skills in catching fish. The grayling is near extinct and the brown trout not far behind. That's a real shame about the DK rivers, I didn't realise the cormorants had gotten so bad there. Hopefully when the world goes back to normal you can spend some more time over here!
DK very unfortunately is the winter destination for most of Scandinavias cormnorants during the winter. But we have some 30.000 breeding pairs eating ½ kg fish each day. Have seen the at reservoirs around Alfreton, so fingers crossed they don't get the taste for rivers !! HOWEVER probably worth mentioning the price tag as greenword mentioned looks like its over £75 a session puts it out of reach of most "average people" when you factor in price of petrol etc. Nice to see a good river that clear and one can dream :)
Hi Goldtremor, yeah, I didn't mention cost because most folks can't get on here anyway, it isn't a day ticket water as such. As Andrew says below, compared to a decent seat at a football match or a night at the theatre it's comparative cost and plenty of average folks do those things every weekend. @@IBandAndyFishing hi find it great andy bought it with a 9ft 4wt ultralight amazing combo for dry fly been using it from march an no probs so far andy
Thanks for watching Nigel! Interesting comment that, the weed growth here is really healthy and the water free of phosphates end fertilizer, as far as I'm aware the weed isn't managed like on a southern chalkstream. It also provides great habitat for all manner of bugs as well as refuge for trout fry and the trout themselves 👍
Don’t beat yourself up too much over spooking a few of those fish Andy. You made what is very difficult conditions look far easier than it really was. Great to see out on some water actually fishing instead of guiding.
thats a great spot, have to say its also the reason fly fishing is not as big as it should be as all the great streams for trout are no go for so many people and unless you like still waters you dont have much choice?
Cause most of these aren't stocked, these are wild trout. Lot of rivers in Canada are hatchery fish. Stockie bashing is pretty much frowned upon in the uk lol Theres wild brown trout up here in Scotland gettin caught upwards of 10lb. In the lochs or you guys say lakes. Theres 20lb plus ferox trout. The scottish record ferox brown trout was 31lb 12oz. We get fish like you guys trust me lol
@@chrisburgess6964 was nothing to do with the British as a whole lol. You sound a bit bitter. theres two different breeds of browns in Canada and America..German browns and loch leven brown trout. One from Germany and other from loch leven in Scotland. The people who brought the loch leven browns over were scottish settlers and the german browns is a long story but they were from Germany in short. If you like fishing brown trout. better be thankful cause if they didnt do what they did. You wouldnt be fishing for them would you 🤣. The browns aren't an invasive species in Canada unlike in some parts of Australia. So cant complain. They probably more beneficial for the musky and pike populations
I bought a set of Stroft FC spools to tie my own leaders from FC, and tapered nylon leaders + tippet materiual for dry flies or shallow fishing. Which knots do you advise for the FC leaders?
These are a 12' furled leader, though they aren't 100% consistent, you can't be when making them. They're always more than a rod length and that's 10' 👍
@@IBandAndyFishing thanks. 9ft is the max I can usually find. It's amazing how many anglers don't like them even when they can be shown to be so effective even on clear water.
As much as I understand it, I hate how elitist a lot of fly fishing is. As a student it’s almost impossible to afford paying for club membership a that are £200+ a season. It just means younger people like myself get excluded from most fly fishing locations.
in the southwest UK where I live, we have several small trout streams amongst our club waters. they're not 'manicured' like the exclusive waters but membership is only £35 a year. so it's possible. we have lots of coarse fish water too: dace can be a real test of your dry fly skills
@@richnfamous59 unfortunately I live in the Midlands. If I was down your way you can bet I’d look into joining. To be honest I may look into it anyway. I haven’t been able to find anything similar around here
@@greenswordgaming39 I think there's some great fishing to be had on the Calder: there's a dude here who posts some good stuff. the Peak District, maybe? you can also check out smaller tributaries to the 'big' rivers: trout find their way into them too. the membership for the big river: £350/yr, ten times ours good luck and tight lines
the cost of river fly fishing is a debate which will rumble on for a while I think. When we're talking about the Lathkill we're talking about one of the very best rivers in the whole county, demand for that quality of fishing is high which drives the price up, there's a full time river keeper etc etc. Whereabouts in the midlands are you? There are clubs/tickets to suit all sorts of budgets, maybe we can help
It's what I've got in my pack at the moment so it's what I use John. I also don't think it breaks at 2.4lb, it's almost definitely stronger than that 👍

@@IBandAndyFishing I feel your pain writing, directing, camera man and presenter! On top of that you have to do a bit of fishing.....lol.
caught my first brown trout on the fly Pb as well
Amazing river and senery. Shame to see, so much weed. Few years be unfishable if not dealt with. Great video Andy.
They have a river keeper but I’d hazard a guess that it’s that weed that will provide the food and cover?
Thanks for watching Nigel! Interesting comment that, the weed growth here is really healthy and the water free of phosphates end fertilizer, as far as I'm aware the weed isn't managed like on a southern chalkstream. It also provides great habitat for all manner of bugs as well as refuge for trout fry and the trout themselves 👍
Don’t beat yourself up too much over spooking a few of those fish Andy. You made what is very difficult conditions look far easier than it really was. Great to see out on some water actually fishing instead of guiding.
It's a really tough river, I was pretty chuffed with how it turned out in the end. Its bloody frustrating spooking them off a sz20 landing though 🙈😂
thats a great spot, have to say its also the reason fly fishing is not as big as it should be as all the great streams for trout are no go for so many people and unless you like still waters you dont have much choice?
Hey can you recommend a fly combo reel and rod to start out with something below a £100 if possible?
did you see the fish at 0:50 to 0:53 bottom?
You need to come to Canada them trout are just run of the mill
Cause most of these aren't stocked, these are wild trout. Lot of rivers in Canada are hatchery fish. Stockie bashing is pretty much frowned upon in the uk lol Theres wild brown trout up here in Scotland gettin caught upwards of 10lb. In the lochs or you guys say lakes. Theres 20lb plus ferox trout. The scottish record ferox brown trout was 31lb 12oz. We get fish like you guys trust me lol
Lots of wild trout here or established wild due to Brits thinking it would be nice to have brown trout
@@ChillinLikeAVillain1210 that's Canadian
@@chrisburgess6964 explain lol. "That's Canadian" in context of what i said doesnt make sense lol what is Canadian haha
....and the furled leader, must try
they're a game changer Paul, give them a go!
I bought a set of Stroft FC spools to tie my own leaders from FC, and tapered nylon leaders + tippet materiual for dry flies or shallow fishing. Which knots do you advise for the FC leaders?
I use mono furled leaders and FC tippet bud, I find blood knots work just fine for me!
Andy - what make is the landing net your using?
Hi Nick, that's a Mclean net, they're fantastic
quality... ;o)
Thanks Jason!
Is that furled leader really 12 foot? I thought they came with added tippet and that the total was 12 foot??
These are a 12' furled leader, though they aren't 100% consistent, you can't be when making them. They're always more than a rod length and that's 10' 👍
@@IBandAndyFishing thanks. 9ft is the max I can usually find. It's amazing how many anglers don't like them even when they can be shown to be so effective even on clear water.
Yay!...Beer.
🍻🍻🍻
Which are the best clubs to become member around London for fly fishing please
Try the Wey between Bentley and Farnham
Hi what would you say the fish weigh roughly?
I haven’t been able to find anything similar around here
@@greenswordgaming39 I think there's some great fishing to be had on the Calder: there's a dude here who posts some good stuff. the Peak District, maybe?
you can also check out smaller tributaries to the 'big' rivers: trout find their way into them too. the membership for the big river: £350/yr, ten times ours
good luck and tight lines
the cost of river fly fishing is a debate which will rumble on for a while I think.
@@IBandAndyFishing I’m Leicestershire based myself so my selection is pretty limited as is.
You’re trying to hard. Love lathkill. My favourite walking without fishing
Yeah I lost it a bit in the last hour, dry fly fishing against the clock with cameras rolling isn't ideal!
What is drag? What is drift? Sorry to be stupid....just starting.
Oh the horror of fishing 7x :)
7x + snags = stress!
@@IBandAndyFishing Tell me, why use 7x Scierra line when there are other brands of 6x that are almost as thin. Is it down to cost?
It's what I've got in my pack at the moment so it's what I use John. I also don't think it breaks at 2.4lb, it's almost definitely stronger than that 👍
How do you afford to fish at all of these top venues?
whats the elastic band for ??
To dry the dry flies off
@@IBandAndyFishing so surprised I hadn't seen this before!😊
It's genius!
Don't you take hem home to eat can't see the point when they are eating fish it's not like carp fishing 🎣
To a lot of people carp are eating fish 🤷♂️
Personally think trout tastes dreadful
Look mate just cast about stop talking and consentrate you are doing my head in can't relax fishing is supposed to be relaxing
'Just cast about' - I'm guessing you don't do much river fly fishing? 👀
You talk too much. Couldn’t go beyond 09.13. bye
Too much talking!
Thanks Alan!
