Never knew how one of these boxes were made. Loved how it turned out. I like the end of the video, that's a great question because I wonder the same thing!
Ty. Clever I also like the end grain drawer fronts. I also have been wanting to try making a bandsaw box and using inexpensive 2x4 is a great way to start the learning curve. Thanks
Hey Ty, so many times we see the exotic woods used for boxes etc and they are wonderful but very expensive. For me, how much better can it get by using a 2X4 and spending the additional time to sand & finish it to perfection like you did. For the weekend woodworking warrior like me, this is a great inspirational project.
Beautiful box Ty! Really like the shape and the way you had the end grain on the face. Great video too. I keep the video files on hard drives. I try to record only small clips now to keep the storage size down. Good luck in the contest!
Thanks Steve. I liked yours from last year too. I can't believe that I didn't know you made that as your entry and took 1st place with it until after I planned mine all out in my head and was getting ready to get started.
Great job, I love the idea of having the end grain give the face of the box so much character. I noticed at 4:00 in the video, you have a thinner blade on, when you pushed the piece through, you had a lot of blade deflection. Please, please, double check your thrust bearing when changing blades, that can be very dangerous. Wouldn't want anything to happen to you, we want to keep seeing more projects emerge from the monoloco workshop! Great job and keep up the great videos!
I appreciate you don’t show every minute of sanding, cutting, etc. Nicely organized and presented video. Great project results! Question…it is hard for me to tell on my screen just how shiny the results of the finish is. Would you call it a brilliant result? The technique is very interesting. Thanks for your wonderful video.
Neat! That came out excellent Ty, and I also like how the end grain looks. What are you going to put in it? I've gotten in the habit of shooting shorter clips and just capturing enough footage to get the step across, then I turn it off. I actually keep all the raw footage though. I bought a 2TB hard drive, just to store them all on. I think it will be awesome to look back on when I'm good.
Thanks April. I really don't know what I'm going to put in it or if I'm going to keep it or give it away. I agree with it being awesome to look back and that's kind of why I would like to keep the raw video. I guess I just need to get better and only getting the video I need.
Great little band saw box! Nice design and finish. Footage is kind of like cut offs. You don't want to throw them away, but they just over take you after a while. For now though, I'm using these little 2T drives that WD makes. They hold tons of footage and aren't very big at all compared to the old drives that were usually 2 or 3 hundred Gig. And before long, they'll get the SSD drives down to where us humans can afford them. They are even smaller. That will be sweet. Got one in my new editing computer. SWEEEEEET. And fast! Anyway, that's where I keep mine for now, on external hard drives. Oh did I mention organize, organize, organize. I'm still learning that one.
Yea, you're right about not wanting to throw them away but them over running you. I'm kind of a geek so I've got a decent 4 bay NAS (Network Area Storage) with a 1TB raid and a 3TB raid setup. I'm not sure if I added the extra 3TB by this video or not. I still find myself deleting all of the extra footage and only keeping the end render for each video as well as thumbnail and other images.
Hi Ty. I've just discovered your channel. Nice work with the bandsaw box. A little trick when gluing a stack of boards is putting some grains of salt on each one. The grains prevents the boards from moving, making the whole process much easier.
Great looking box Ty. Bandsaw boxes always seem to take a while to do but are a lot of fun. I burn a lot of my old videos to DVD's and hold ones I use often or take clips out of on several very large external hard drives.
Thank you Ty... Great video and "2x4 box". My first time hearing of the 2x4 contest, very cool. I will be researching thanks to you and the others commenting here. Regards, Ted
Cool, I've only ever seen hardwood boxes, softwood looks good too. I was wondering, did you purposely chose the end grain front to back, I wonder if you were to have all the wood going the other two ways, or even a mix of the layers, the look wouldn't certainly be different, not to everyone's fancy I guess. Its given me some ideas though. Thanks.
Your name came up while watching a video that Shawn Stone did. It was at that woodworking event. He panned by your booth and said hi I think. Now your videos keep showing up. Hitting the subscribe button. This was 3 years ago.. interested in seeing what else you've done since. I love that you did a bandsaw box out of a 2x4. It looks awesome.
I got the video done this morning but then had a friend come over to plane down about 200 bd ft of alder. I'm leaving for a bachelor party in about 45 minutes, so when I was waiting for the video to finish rendering, uploading to UA-cam and processing before it went live I started getting nervous. It probably took 1.5 hours to render, upload and process...
As a point of reference I shot in 60i instead of 60p, and I shot less footage now then I first started; for my entry I had 6GB of raw footage. The band box is very elegant, I really like the curves and the way the end grains mash up. Great entry. - John
I need to focus on just getting usable video of each process instead of filming the entire thing and then only picking out select shots. That'll greatly reduce the amount of editing and storage requirements.
Very cool, like the way the stain pops out over the grain. With regard to filming, a technique we learnt is to create a story board before filming on paper first then you shoot too cut so that you dont end up with hours of footage you need to go through. It may help save you some space too.
Hey, is that your bandsaw fence design? I found photos of this while looking for something to build for my ridgid bandsaw. Built one myself. Works great!
nice work! I did notice a great deal of foreword and back movement in your band saw blade. looks like you maybe forgot to move the back stop bearing fwd on top and possibly bottom blade guides to touch backside of blade. this will help with efficiency and quality of your cuts. keep up the good work and thank you for shearing.
Good tip! Yea, I probably didn't reset the guide when I switched out the blade. This was a few years ago and I think I just go the bandsaw before that and was still getting used to it.
Try getting a stabilizer from Carter Products to use with the 1/4 and less width. It makes a huge difference in cutting around narrow corners. Using it with a 1/8 inch blade almost makes it like a big Scroll Saw!
Hi. First time viewer. So IF INDEED this is your FIRST ever bandsaw box,,,, then WOW CONGRATULATIONS looks like you have some serious skills on designing and also on bandsaw control. Your cuts looked great for first time ever . Ty for video.
The bandsaw box turned out great, the end grain on the front has an interesting patchwork feel to it. Planing your shots helps you lessen the amount of raw footage. But I also only keep the current project and the project immediately before it. All the remaining footage is deleted.
came out great. and one other thing I was looking on Pinterest to get some fence ideas for a bandsaw can I just pick up I saw yours on it now I'm making mine after yours
Thanks Greg but wow.. $20k? That's crazy talk! Between the table saw and band saw that was primarily used for this project, I might have pushed a little over the $500 mark.
Wow, that looks amazing. Is there a certain technique you use to get those sharp tight corners inside the box? my saw always ends up pinching its blade and stopping.
Great Job on the band saw box Ty!!! I was actually strongly considering doing a band saw box also but then at the last minute switched to the shelf that I did!! Anyways the box came out beautiful!! I have subscribed and hope to see more videos soon!!
Question; First, fantastic job! My question is we couldn’t see how you actually cut out one drawer to the next drawer. How did you cut out the two other drawers, the video didn’t really show it. Did you have to cut in to each base frame for each drawer? Thanks ML. By the way, we have two actual live Ewoks. Haha
Live Ewoks! To cut out the other two drawers you do about the same as the first one, you cut though the frame but in between the drawers. You'll want to make sure that all of the cuts through the frame are aligned so they'll all close when you clamp it back up and glue it but it's hardly noticeable. If you look at 3:25 in the video you'll see where I'm headed to cut out the second drawer and then if you pay close attention you can see the two cuts in the frame for the top two drawers. Hope that helps!
+Ty Moser I think I saw a blade change on the bandsaw after you cut the outline. Please tell me, what size blade did you use on the bandsaw to cut out the drawers, thanks.
+Ty Moser. I can only go down to a 6mm =1/4" blade on my bandsaw. It is a SIP 14" 2-speed bandsaw. I telephoned the company and they do not recommend that I go any lower than this. Do you think that using a 1/4" blade would be small enough to achieve the radius/curves for the bandsaw boxes that I want to try, typically the drawers?
It probably took about 4 hours of actual work. I think I did the entire thing over the course of about a week. There was a lot of time spent waiting for glue, stain and polyurethane to dry.
Great bandsaw box. I would suggest you wear respiratory protection while sanding, the microscopic airborn particles of wood and wood sap cannot be removed from your lungs; and will grind at them worse than smoking 5 packs a day...
I have stacks and stacks of hard drives, lol. The more you make them the easier it gets though. The bandsaw box turned out great. I especially like the end grain look.
Hey Ty great job on your first bandsaw box. It really turned great. Yes I could see the end grain on your drawer fronts and it popped. Well now that you did well I hope to see more from you. Are you going to flock the inside of the drawers? Hey give my channel a look at jeff vandenberg nickname is woodconsin. I just started putting videos up.
Woodconsin Good job on the videos, keep it up! I didn't flock the inside of the drawers but probably will if I make more. I think it gives it a nice finished or more professional look. I just didn't have any flocking at the time.
Ty Moser thanks. Looking into a new laptop and editing software. But I trying to figure out how to swing the cost. Yeah im getting ready to make about 20 bandsaw jewelry boxes for a craft show coming up memorial day weekend. Im shopping around for the the best price on flock. Ill keep you posted on what I find.
That's pretty amazing to go from a regular pine 2x4 to that beautiful box. well done!
Great looking band sew job Ty, I really like the way the end grain looks too. Great entry for the contest.
Never knew how one of these boxes were made. Loved how it turned out. I like the end of the video, that's a great question because I wonder the same thing!

Hey Sebastopolmark, thanks for your kind words! I hope that I can keep making inspirational projects with the little time I get in the shop.
Your comment sucked... I was told to "put down comments".....
I love it! The end grain really knocks it out of the park. Great Job!

Band saw boxes are fun to make. Your imagination is your only design limit. Nice work for your first try.
Hi Ty. I've just discovered your channel. Nice work with the bandsaw box.
A little trick when gluing a stack of boards is putting some grains of salt on each one. The grains prevents the boards from moving, making the whole process much easier.
Bernabé García That's a great trick! I'm going to have to do my best to remember that one next time I try to glue way to many things together at once.
Great looking box Ty. Bandsaw boxes always seem to take a while to do but are a lot of fun. I burn a lot of my old videos to DVD's and hold ones I use often or take clips out of on several very large external hard drives.
Thanks Jim. I might have to make another one out of some nice hardwood now that I've got the process figured out.
Very nice box! Very unique! Thank you.
End grain bandsaw box! Love it! 👌👏
Very cool box. Great jobTy. Love the finish.
Thank you Ty... Great video and "2x4 box".
My first time hearing of the 2x4 contest, very cool.
I will be researching thanks to you and the others commenting here.

I just thought it would look kind of cool. End grain bandsaw box.

Thanks for the subscribe Angie! Sometimes I cringe looking at my older videos but I still like this 2x4 bandsaw box.
the end grain does look great....liked the shape of box as well....
Nice job Ty. And posted just in the nick of time. The box turned out great.
I got the video done this morning but then had a friend come over to plane down about 200 bd ft of alder. I'm leaving for a bachelor party in about 45 minutes, so when I was waiting for the video to finish rendering, uploading to UA-cam and processing before it went live I started getting nervous. That finish looks great

Dude, is so funny. Your garage shop looks almost identical to mine.
Nice bandsawbox👍
Hey, is that your bandsaw fence design? I found photos of this while looking for something to build for my ridgid bandsaw. Built one myself. Works great!
Just catching this as I just got a bandsaw. This one turned out great!
Thanks +Kaged Creations! I keep wanting to make it back around to another bandsaw box but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Fantastic job. Looking forward to more videos from you. Good luck!
I think this looks awesome!
Beautiful box.

Planing your shots helps you lessen the amount of raw footage. But I also only keep the current project and the project immediately before it. All the remaining footage is deleted.
Thanks Fr. Thomas Bailey, OSB I guess I'll just need to make more videos and get use to planning things out a little better.
What type blade do you have on your band saw? Those were some nice tight turns on the cut
came out great. and one other thing I was looking on Pinterest to get some fence ideas for a bandsaw can I just pick up I saw yours on it now I'm making mine after yours
Thanks Eric! I've had my fence for years now and still use it all the time.
Great job, thanks for sharing too.
Ty, that is really cool, great job ! All for the cost of 2x4 and $20k in wood working equipment
Thanks Greg but wow.. $20k? That's crazy talk! Between the table saw and band saw that was primarily used for this project, I might have pushed a little over the $500 mark.
That came out very nice!
Hey ty when you put stain on if you put it on with a rag the stain goes farther
Wow, that looks amazing. Is there a certain technique you use to get those sharp tight corners inside the box? my saw always ends up pinching its blade and stopping.
Not really a technique, maybe s smaller blade? What size blade are you using?
Looks great Ty!
Wonderful result. End grain and stain is really magically!
(Also, just discovered your channel. Subscribed).

it's beautiful. nice job.
I like your project and what size band saw blade do you use to make the cuts.
Thanks Clay! The size of the band saw blade depends on how tight of a corner you want. I think I was using something like a 3/16 or 1/4" blade.
Looks great! Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done 😎👍
Great teacher👍🏻
Thanks for letting me know
I think it’s called a French Polish, but they normally use shellack rather than poly.
That really looks good
good job
Great box!
Huge and AWESOME !!!
Great job
nice work!! hay what size blocks u cut from the 2x4?
There were just a little over 1x1".
Thanks!!
+Ty Moser I think I saw a blade change on the bandsaw after you cut the outline. Please tell me, what size blade did you use on the bandsaw to cut out the drawers, thanks.

7:53 Love the end grain front. 👍
good video TY
Beautiful box
nice box well done .
Buen trabajo
great job ! keep up the good work
How long did the entire process take from planing the wood, to the final coat of finish?
It probably took about 4 hours of actual work. I think I did the entire thing over the course of about a week. There was a lot of time spent waiting for glue, stain and polyurethane to dry.
Excellent job...Subbed!
Did you actually work on your BSbox in a launderette lol
They're good boxes.
Very nice job
Thanks Nathan, I really appreciate it.
Technical and original
What did you plain it too
Very nice
cool diferent and nice
love it.
Great bandsaw box. I would suggest you wear respiratory protection while sanding, the microscopic airborn particles of wood and wood sap cannot be removed from your lungs; and will grind at them worse than smoking 5 packs a day...
Don't forget the particles of glue. I have started wearing a respirator since this.
I have stacks and stacks of hard drives, lol. The more you make them the easier it gets though. The bandsaw box turned out great. I especially like the end grain look.

whats the blade size on the band saw?
That was a long time ago but I think it was 3/8 or 1/4"
Nice!!!!
I'm sure that in some states it is illegal to compliment a guy's box, not to mention dangerous lol
Обалденно .
he says a band saw box, but.. when and where did he ACTUALLY use a band saw?????
Did you watch the video? 2:44 on was bandsaw..
I think the finish mix was from the drunken woodworker. Not sure if he picked up from someone else.
Nice job, sorry but spent a lot of time forwarding to avoid you talking too much.
My filming and editing style has changed quite a bit since then.
It wasn't a criticism my friend, your work is excellent
