Bandsaw Box / How To Fast and Easy

  • I wanted to show folks how easy it is to make a bandsaw box. They look intimidating and there are a few tools that you need to make it easy but I have tried to show that they are easier than you think. This box is made of #1 pine from Home Depot that was left over from another project. It does not matter how long the box is but the height is important, my Grizzly 14" bandsaw opens up to 6 1/4" high. The blade is a 3/16" x .025" thick, 4 teeth per inch, skip tooth. PLEASE NOTE, I did not show how to cut the front and back off of the actual drawer, my video just shows cutting out the hollow section of the drawer. I cut 1/4” off the front and back, just like the way I cut the 1/4” off of the back of the entire box.
I learned from another really good video not to make it round because the saw blade will try to grab your wood and jamb the blade which in my case ruined my blade and scared the crap out of me when I did not heed his warning. There is a jig you can make to solve that problem out there on UA-cam. I roughly had 90 minutes in this project and that included messing with the camera. I have another video making boxes out of Purple Heart and Hard Maple. The hard wood takes more time but they turn out beautiful.
Check out my other videos showing the workbench, drill press table and miter saw station that show up in this video. Thanks for watching!

I like the way you "bookmatched" the grain on the sides. My bandsaw is supposed to come on Wednesday. A bandsaw box will be one of my first projects.

Very well done!! I enjoyed the video presentation and the skills demonstrated. You have inspired me!! What blade width did you use?? Love the Watco Oil finish suggestion!! Really impressed. Thanks so much for your creativity & sharing.

Thank you for the very nice comment. The blade is a 3/16" x .025" thick, 4 teeth per inch, skip tooth. I am glad you asked because I thought I had put that in my video.

@@lilredwoodshop5529 Thanks for the info!! I have drawn up the pattern as well as I could from the image in the video. I bought a nice length of clear pine with as attractive an edge grain as I could find because yours stands out so beautifully!! Thanks for spurring me on!! Will send you a pic of mine when finished if I can!

Very nice. Finally someone explained how much wood to use and how thick. Thanks! Do you have templates to use for the boxes?

Sorry I do not. Each one I just freehand a design. I can make one and send it to you. I will try to do that in the next day or so. The shape shown in this video will also work for a clock which I might try soon.
Thank you for your nice comment.

Lil Red Woodshop that would be great. I’ve got some spare poplar and pine I can use up. Going to be my first bandsaw box. I looked at your drill press layout. That’s impressive as well. How do I get in co tact with you? Your website?

Looks like you didn't show cutting the back and front off of the drawer. Did you have to do anything to prevent it from 'rolling' in the bandsaw while you were cutting it? Also, what method do you use to know that the bandsaw blade is tensioned properly, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks.

Hi Fred, you are exactly right and a good observation, disappointed in myself for leaving that clip out. I did cut off the front and back of the drawer the same way I cut off the back of the main body. The drawer had a slight flat spot on the bottom which made it somewhat safe to cut off the front and back but I was very careful expecting it to roll on me. On a box I had made before I did roll one and it jammed the blade and bent it and chewed up some of the cushioning rubber on the large blade sprockets.
Now for tensioning, that has been a little bothersome. I have used 4 different blades on my saw for various projects, but after bending the one previously mentioned I struggled adjusting the blade used on this box. I had to really crank the adjusting knob to take up the slack (I had probably damaged my saw when I bent the blade). So I resorted to about a 1/4" play total (side to side) on the blade with the guide fully raised. It has worked well. Sorry for the long answer.
