I bet band saw boxes would sell better at shows if you made them into letters. Like an A, D, O, double drawer B, Q, Etc. Etc. Ppl would but a letter if their last name started with that letter I bet.
I bought the bandsaw book a couple years ago before my son and I found you on UA-cam. This video and your others have inspired me to have another go. Thanks.
It's an additional step, but for gluing on templates, I first put down a layer of continuous masking or painter's tape. Then you just put the adhesive on top of the tape and the template goes on the top. When you're done, you just peel up the tape and never have to deal with the paper directly adhered to the wood.
I want to get this book here real soon I have a few more tools to buy yet my wife hates you guys lol but only because I've spent thousands in tools and most of what I make I give away its hard to turn a profit on stuff but the good thing is I'm term ill I have no kidneys they been removed I'm on dialysis this is what I needed it keeps me going I mainly watch you mark and Steve Ramsey you guys are a inspiration and helps me get past the pain and gets me out in my shop I do hope before I leave this world I get to meet you guys in person thanks for all that you do
Great video!! Only thing I might add, is to place felt dots on the bottom of the drawers to get better spacing around the drawer. Also add some on the bottom of the box to keep them from scratching the furniture they are place on.
Totally worth the wait, and as an owner of both of your books, lemme just say this: People, don't think you got everything in the book in this video. If this video got your attention, buy the book. It's fantastic. In fact, buy both. Because David is a good guy. And we need to support good guys who make good stuff.
Agree! I just bought both books and am working on my first bandsaw box now. This video was a great companion that just reminded me I need to order flocking as well as a 3/16” blade? (My smallest is 1/4”)
This is a good video filled with good advice. I would like to add one comment based on extensive experience with bandsawn boxes: It is far easier to sand the inside of the box before you glue the back on IF you are not covering those surfaces with cloth or flocking. Many thanks!
Man, these are awesome. I love that you are re-doing all of your old videos. Showing how to get started in woodworking and possibly selling a few items is great. Keep it up brother.
i really enjoyed your book and have made a bunch of these. i jointed all of the cutoff fronts, backs and cores for a nice tight fit before glueup, works great!
I just wanted to say that this video save my life!!! I believed my bench top grizzly band saw was junk. Because of this video I switched a blade that you recommended. It worked!! My little bandsaw is actually fun to use. I am off to buy your bandsaw box book so I can start making boxes! Thank you!!!
I bought your band saw box book about a year ago and made some pretty cool boxes for my two nieces and they were a big hit. I had one in the shape of an H for Hannah with Baltic birch cabinet grade plywood two 3/4" pieces glued together with Mahogany on the outsides two drawers. Shannon got one shaped like an S with three drawers made with 8 quarter white oak and Purple heart on the outsides. Green flocking made them look great. For the pulls I simply used a plug cutter on the cutoff waste of each glue up.
Really great video because you went in depth and explained the detail parts. I think the 1/8th inch round-over makes all the difference, but the flocking really sets them apart. Also, thanks for adding the bit at the end about selling at craft fairs and such. Good info for me down the road! Cheers!
After your tweat yesterday I managed to make a band saw box today, with out a band saw. Mines not as slick looking at yours. But I really like the silliness and creativity you can have with band saw boxes and want to make a actual band saw box with a band saw.
Go with the grain. Ok. Also using plywood as a filler wood. Nice. I have some walnut and some plywood. Gonna try this. I already have a 3/16" blade ready to go. Thanks for the video man. Very helpful
Just a tip because you always use templates. If you cover the surface with painters tape, you can just peel it off and you don’t have to worry about it
Either blue tape on the face of the wood, before affixing pattern with 3m spray glue, or using Goo Gone after as an adhesive remover; I've found the blue tape pre-prep is the easiest.
Nice note about pushing a round piece through the bandsaw. I'm receiving my first bandsaw in a couple of weeks and your tip will be on my mind. Thanks. New subscriber.
David, I saw one guy on the Tube use painters tape then the spray glue. The glue does not impregnate the wood that way. works quite well I've found. Peels nicely when the time comes. Mike
We recently made our first bandsaw box, and watched your video of the 'Chicago' bandsaw box as a guide, so thanks! Ours was in the shape of a 'Q' to hold Q-tips, so we know what a major pain it is to cut out and sand these. Yours are very beautiful, and we love the mix of the different woods. So nice of Samuel L Jackson to make a cameo in your video too! 😉
For glue the templets on I use Elmers kids glue sticks. Its hard to find but I like their repositing glue sticks. They stay in position but easy to remove. you can use the regular glue sticks but not as easy to get it off.
I agree 100% with the website move to Squarespace. I did webdev for 20+ years and it just makes sense. I've tried VM appliances that are prepatched quasi and still incremental patches are still required. Also cross site scripting security patches ever updating. I guess that's why we do woodworking ;) Great content & projects. Just built a home cloud using Raspberry Pi for music files & Solidworks, and image files. I mirror a 256gig thumb drive with an SSD to protect against data loss.
Hi...after several furniture based projects I am going to kick it back a notch so I thought for my next project I'd try to make a band saw box or two. I really enjoyed your video and it has given me confidence to try this...I'm going to mess around a bit but will likely also buy your templates when I think I'm ready.
I hope there are projects for a very small bandsaw. My steers & sawtooth Crapsman won't even take a 4x4. It only opens to 3 in. I cannot afford a better one, unless I find a super bargain at a yard sale, like where most of my tools came from. I might be able to make a bandsaw box out of a 2x2. I did cut a Victorian chair out of a 2x2. It turned out better than I expected for my first band saw project. But it still needs sanding and finish. Right after I got that at a yard sale I had put new tires on it. The cost of bandsaw tires is ridiculous! Luckily I found out you can put vacuum cleaner belts on them. I need small projects for my small bandsaw, or a super bargain on a larger one. 😃
Cover your wood with blue painters tape then spray adhere the template to the blue tape. It makes it very easy to remove the leftover template prior to sanding.
Here's a tip for masking off the edges before painting the flocking adhesive. Instead of blue painters tape, use fine line tape. It's used in the sign and auto painting trades, is available at most sign suppliers and Amazon, comes in many widths from 1/16" on up, and the best part is it's flexible and slightly stretchy so it is very easy to follow curves. It will cut masking time to a fraction, and seal better than blue painters tape.
I have youre first book, and I just bought the last available copy of the second one. GREAT boxes and wonderful video. Thanks for sharing your art techniques.
Both of your books are great! Looking forward to your 3rd! Loving the new tshirt design, David. Next shirt should read, "It's my shop, I do what I want!"
If you have a drill press with a big enough chuck, you can sand and polish the aluminium all the way from satin to a mirror finish. Doesn't take that long either, but you need to have good ventilation and wear a mask if you're doing a few of them. I learned how big a headache aluminium dust can give you the hard way. Surprisingly nasty stuff.
I'm usually pretty instinctively safe about doing things, but I've never cut a round piece in the band saw (cause it's never come up) and I'm about a thousand percent sure you probably just saved a lot of fingers by taking those few seconds to teach that simple safety tip! (and less face it, blood stains probably decrease the value of the piece)
I know you hear this a lot but I really like how you also give advice on the selling or not selling of these at places like craft shows. Do these tend to better like through online vendors like Etsy or even Ebay?
I bought your book, can I get some templates from the book? I LIKE that you showed your mistake, and show how to correct it! You don't see many maker's do that. Great job Dave....
The Squarespace prop is so funny, I use it already for a couple of my sites, your boxes, however, are superb, I use a bandsaw for cutting 1000's of kg of meat for my 70 Huskies. Nice one, thanks for the lesson, the skills and the Squarespace add :)
David, I am in Georgia. Just retired and getting back into my woodworking. I just bought your books on cutting boards and bandsaw boxes and can't wait until they get here. If you don't mind sharing, what do you charge for your wine butler and bandsaw boxes? I am hoping to go to some craft shows as soon as the covid stuff goes away. Thanks and really enjoy your videos. Rick
I noticed you had some some difficulty getting the pattern paper off. I find it easier to apply some packing tape to the surface that I want to put the paper pattern on and then spray on the adhesive and apply the paper pattern to that. Then it is pretty easy to remove the tape along with the paper after cutting out the pattern. And it doesn’t leave a residue on the wood which makes sanding easier.
Just received you bandsaw box book. Well worth the money. Like the format and very informative.. I need a better bandsaw but as many limited on money. Can your Rikon 601(?) bandsaw handle the boxes you have in your book? It is my budget. Thanks
1. I have your Bandsaw Box book and I love it. 2. That happy little mistake that you covered up with the dowel insert looks terrific - the addition of a circular decoration within the circular design looks as though it was always meant to be that way. 3. That Pulp Fiction cut scene almost caused me to spit coffee at my screen from laughter.
hi Dave, I have been looking at bandsaws an thought of getting the one you list. I was going to get the blade you list also but the length is far to long for the bandsaw. Am I missing something? I am very new to the bandsaw so please help. Love the boxes. Hope to get that good one day. Your a good teacher.
I think it would be fun to make Russian Nesting Bandsaw boxes where you use the cutout block in the center to make another box that fits in the box you just made and so on.
Great video David. Thank you. Just want to remind people that they should never try to back out of a cut while the bandsaw is running.☺ it's extremely dangerous.😨 Mike
Could you do the same project but only use the bandsaw and hand sand it? Just one though haha I am getting my first bandsaw tomorrow and wood love to get some more in depth tips.
Whelp...just discovered this whole Bandsaw Boxes thing via a random Facebook group. Then a Google search brought me here. Seems pretty simple! I like it.
Get the templates for these 4 bandsaw boxes! www.makesomething.tv/product/bandsaw-box-templates-1
I bet band saw boxes would sell better at shows if you made them into letters. Like an A, D, O, double drawer B, Q, Etc. Etc.
Ppl would but a letter if their last name started with that letter I bet.
Hi David. Unfortunately the links to the website and therefore the templates aren’t working anymore.
I bought the bandsaw book a couple years ago before my son and I found you on UA-cam. This video and your others have inspired me to have another go.

Agree. Definitely do this with all my scroll saw work
Zachary Wilson OMG... mind blown. 🤯 I am so doing this next time. Thanks!

For the record I did not pay Vincent to say that! 😁
I do own both books. They're awesome to the max.
Yup. What he said. Good companion video David!
Agree! I just bought both books and am working on my first bandsaw box now. This video was a great companion that just reminded me I need to order flocking as well as a 3/16” blade? (My smallest is 1/4”)
Totally! Got em both, LOTS of quality content. Besides there’s nothing like having a hard copy to access when in need.
This is a good video filled with good advice.
I would like to add one comment based on extensive experience with bandsawn boxes: It is far easier to sand the inside of the box before you glue the back on IF you are not covering those surfaces with cloth or flocking.

Great to see a fellow woodworker who uses the safety rules in his videos, lead by example!
I remember one of your Bandsaw boxes was the first woodworking project I did and little did I know that it would get me hooked on an expensive hobby.
Bought the book, made some boxes, now I'm loved by all my family. It's really that simple folks. Get the book; it's like cheap family therapy. :)
THANKS!!
Really great video because you went in depth and explained the detail parts. I think the 1/8th inch round-over makes all the difference, but the flocking really sets them apart. Also, thanks for adding the bit at the end about selling at craft fairs and such. Good info for me down the road! Cheers!
Loved the REM Easter egg! Always love your videos!
Thanks Dave!! These boxes are something I have wanted to try - and as a noob-woodworker - this video is really helpful!!

DAVID THE BANSAW BOXES CAME OUT GREAT .I LOVE THEM FROM DOUG
Perfect! I finally got a bandsaw yesterday... and then you post this today! You are now my favorite.
Just a tip because you always use templates. If you cover the surface with painters tape, you can just peel it off and you don’t have to worry about it
Bandsaw boxes are awesome!! The REM Easter egg was the best part. #sandintheplacewhereyou...

Thank you!!
Love the look of the plywood and the dark wood.
Holy smokes. Gorgeous. The boxes look good too. I love the plywood/exotic wood design. These are killer.
Thanks my dude!

Love this video. I am purchasing a bandsaw (finally) next week and want to make a couple of these for my daughter. These look great.
I have the same one in the video . Great value.
Absolutely brilliant Luv it 👍🏾 I’m inspired, I’ll give them a try. Thanks
David those are absolutely beautiful....fantastic work.
Checked it... The bandsaw boxes are awesome. Cant wait till I get and Bandsaw and make one.
What size Bandsaw do you suggest getting
Hey man, to be honest this is one of the best tutorials i've seen in the woodworking area. Thanks a lot!
Careful trusting the clamps The further into your cut the less grip they have cause of the kerf .Nice work!
Truly badass brother. Great work!! 👍👍
These look great! I have a rather complex idea for a wood spyglass, if you would like to hear more, please respond!
The new website is flocking amazing!!
This is one of your better videos in a long time. Not sure exactly why but well done.
Loved the video think I'll get the book and the cutting board book!
These are flocking amazing!!
As great looking as ever! Love the look of mixing the plywood with the dark hardwood.
I hope there are projects for a very small bandsaw.

You really good at making things
Very cool, David. I've never wanted to make a bandsaw box until now.
David great video on bandsaw box building, I can't remember seeing a better video or live demo on the subject. Thanks for sharing . Peace out
That was great David. Thanks for sharing.
Oh hey, I think I recognize one of these, haha! Thanks so much!
😁 you bet! Merry Christmas!🎁
Very cool video, and great to see you build multiple variations simultaneously
Just picked up the book the other day- love it, and looking forward to making a few as gifts!
I cover the wood surface with masking tape before gluing templates on. It makes removal a lot easier.
I have youre first book, and I just bought the last available copy of the second one. GREAT boxes and wonderful video. Thanks for sharing your art techniques.
Thanks Don!

Nothing made me happier than the TV screen at 5:26. Also great work as always!!!
hehe!!
I know you hear this a lot but I really like how you also give advice on the selling or not selling of these at places like craft shows. Do these tend to better like through online vendors like Etsy or even Ebay?
Great video brother. You make some pretty slick looking boxes.
I bought your book, can I get some templates from the book? I LIKE that you showed your mistake, and show how to correct it! You don't see many maker's do that. Great job Dave....
You could use Naptha to remove the templates easier. It's basically a sticky goo type glue or tape remover that doesn't damage finish or wood.
Dude, most loungerooms aren't as clean and tidy as your shop. Love it. (I try to keep a clean shop too...)
Great video! Thanks for the ideas! Getting my first bandsaw for Xmas!
So how much does one of those bandsaw boxes sell for? They look great.
Anywhere from $59 to $200+ look them up online.
awesome boxes, you can use a heat gun to get the templates off easier by heating up the adhesive.
Right on, thanks!!
The Squarespace prop is so funny, I use it already for a couple of my sites, your boxes, however, are superb, I use a bandsaw for cutting 1000's of kg of meat for my 70 Huskies. Nice one, thanks for the lesson, the skills and the Squarespace add :)
Great vid man, always enjoy the flow. Boxes look great! Bandsaw boxes are what got me hooked. I just LOVE bandsaw boxes! Thanks for the vid.

What a clean place
So slick!

😁
Flocking Awesome!!!
Hello,
great Bandsaw Boxes. I will make in the future. Thanks for your video.
Greating from Austria and from my channel, Peter
Nice... your website looks really great David! Clean and to the point...
Absolutely the best bandsaw box tutorial/walk-through that I've seen. Brilliant. I'm desperate to make one now :-)
I noticed you had some some difficulty getting the pattern paper off.
😁 thanks!
Very cool. Nice designs.
Nice work looks great
