For all of you jazz lovers, I really recommend Kent's book. It's eyeopening and easy to grab. Theory and examples harmonize nicely and it's a joy to study. Some of the aspect of music theory and harmonization are more clear to me now and I have studied music theory before, back in my music school days and high school in music class. Go get it and happy jazzing!
Many thanks for the endorsement, Ivan....I'm so glad you told me (you've been pinned!) I just posted a free score for this video and I plan explaining in more detail on the next one. Swing loose, KH
Thanks jazz ranch guy, I always enjoy these. In high school while my friends listened to Green Day, I was listening to Jobim. The older I get, the more mindblowing Jobims music has become. I cant believe how he was able to write these songs!!! Really, how does someone come up with those melodies. The melodies are profoundly story filled without words.
Hi! Very happy To see Brazilian music being so well played By a foreigner musician! I am starting a channel to teach the brazilian accent in the brazilian piano for foreigner musicians and vídeos like yours are inspiring! Congrats for your classes and for your qualities as a pianist!
I‘m practicing “Wave”. I study classics. BossaNova is difficult for me. It’s nice to see movements of your fingers. It’s nice to know that using metronome is OK.
Thank you Kent. I studied classical piano at university, but I have always loved jazz. I have now bought a piano and I am going to study all your videos!
That's great, Ava. See my playlists here: If you're new to jazz start with the Beginner Jazz Series. All my best wishes. ua-cam.com/channels/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCw.htmlplaylists
Beautifully played Kent. One of my songs again. Always loved it and I take it into Agua di Beber and Mas Que Nada. Love what you do with this and will study it more. :-) Hey and you're looking good - - your trip did you good ;-) Love the suit and, of course the hat.
Thank you so much, Kent! I guess I have my next few evenings booked with working through and learning this fantastic arrangement, especially the playing style and chord voicings!
Hi Kent! Could you post the Wave sheet when you can, it id be great to see the melody with chord vocings, especially when you go down with parallel structures. .. I find that a bit difficult still.. Thanks in advance
Dear Kent, thanks so much for your Channel. Your work got me back into studying enthusiastically the piano. Something I lost a couple of years ago. It s that relaxed, clear and funny way you teach and explain your idea of music and art. Just bought your book. Merry Chistmas and all the best.
Welcome Back! I´d love your lead sheet. Also, Kent. one question. As I am singer and pianist, I find all this material great and I study from the book and sheets as well. However, I realize I can play ok but cant´t sing to them most of the time as they are either too low or too high. Obvious reasons . This one, Wave, howver is in D maj and I can do it as it comes!. So a question added to the fact female singers and pianist tunes you could show us in future videos. What would you recommend us female vocalists and pianists to do , I mean, on the left hand,, a bossanova comping and chords onthe RH, for example? But then we would miss all the wonderful drop 2 arrangements,, cuartal voicings, etc ,? .Thank you so much!
Thanks for writing and your question, Vivi. Of course, if you are a mezzo, contralto, or alto, you will be singing a 3rd, 4th or 5th below the standard keys, which are usually written in soprano and tenor keys (top notes being around E, F, G.) So you will need to transpose the lead sheets down. I can do some of that for you if I have the songs in my Sibelius song files. It's a good idea for a singer to be able to transpose to their keys on their own, so a very good investment for you would be to have a transposing software program in which you can import songs and then transpose them to your appropriate key. This is very easy with Sibelius and you can try it out for free. I really should do some videos on working with singers, because I have accompanied singers for years ..also it's important to learn how to accompany yourself while singing, which involves learning good voice- leading and rhythm. (bass lines in LH and chords in RH).
Kent Hewitt Thanks for your thoughts and advice. Although Encore is an old software.. I think by assigning the key changes, you can transpose the Midi file.. I think I would need midi files to transport songs. Right? Those to download are in PDF. I also play and sing with a guitar player and base, which is a different ball game as the ranges can overlap. Many Technics to develop at once! I love the cocktail piano tunes you show us, as I love harmony, reharmonization and different techniques...except I can't sing to them. Then the transposition to Mezzo or Alto ( I have amplitude range) Tthe accompanying techniques to play by myself (with spread voicings , block chords) bass and chords.. and finally to get training in playing in trip or quartet. + I know I mostly need to do Bill Evans, chords, no Bass note... So get side tracked most of the timet to where to devote my study time to! Your video for singing pianist would be very appreciated! Thanks again!!
I think Sibelius has a free or nearly free version. I just bought Notion, which is available for iPad for 30 bucks (150 for Windows; I have both). I also just got SmartScore, which transforms PDFs into Music Xml, so one can transpose any PDF after the format change. As a saxophonist, I transpose to accommodate singers, so you should learn to do that on piano to suit your range. My vocal range is both low and small, which has been my "go to" excuse for not singing.
Maybe I'm asking for too much, but if you do eventually make this arrangement available, can you indicate on it when you are using voicings such as drop 2, rootless voicings, etc. just so we can immediately see what it is and how they are used? That would be so cool!
Kent Hewitt I did! Thank you so much for adding the voicing type names to your arrangement! I feel that I will need to work and study some of those voicings so I fully understand how to apply them to other songs. I've gotten good at rootless voicings used for 2,5,1's. I need to study the drop 2 and locked hand chords among others. Your arrangements are gorgeous and a great way to practice them too.
Thanks for the video ! A humble opinion : Your voicings for the Bb diminished are cool, but in this song it's always very pleasant to at least sometimes have the diatonic version of it. Just a bit of sweetness.
Most musicians I play with use the Bbo chord there. It's also that way in most fakebooks, but you can play an A7b9 if you prefer, but they sound the same except for the bass note.
I now have the arrangement on my website ...no charge. Look under Free Music Downloads. I played the arrangement with embellishments and that's up to the player to put their own personality into the song. Please write back if you like the arrangement... and I plan a new video explaining some more concepts. Thank you!
I now just posted the arrangement...I played it more embellished but the important concepts are there and also at the end is the lead sheet. Thank you!
I know my Metronome when I'm practicing Whenever I have the drums availableI wonder if a big headache to plug-in thatGarage band If you have the money in the time Something else called EZ drama Do you have a room set up like a studio Is an expensive habit but It's fun
And my height (6'6" or even 6'7"). And he lost the best actor Oscar to Paul Newman. I just got "Bop Land" - a CD from 1947, LA, showing his early playing at a legendary jam session with Wardell Grey and other top west coast cats of the day. Way hip.
Lovely, as usual... but I MUST point out that GIRL FROM IPANEMA is Jobim's most famous and popular song, by far! (Maybe TOO popular and famous? Like maybe folks are sick to death of it at this point? I dunno.) Your voicings on WAVE are particularly choice, BTW. But then, I expect no less. "Rootless"-ness is great, but let's take care that those voicings don't become "homeless"... I'm against homelessness!! :-) 🌺 🎶🎹♥♫ XO - M
I agree Marilyn...thanks for the correction. You are right. "Girl" has been a 1st set wedding band song now for years. However Wave is probably his 2nd most popular song and it is a gem in it's own unique way. He wrote so many marvelous songs.... it's hard to pick a favorite. BTW...IMHO, homeless has it's perks.
Let's all get together and talk him into doing a Fakebook With his interpretation Rendition I'll be happy with The most called at 200 songs At an open jam session!!!!!!!!!!
On the topic of Latin and jazz piano in general, I just wanted to direct lovers of this music to someone I hadn't heard of before. Sacha Rubin. He's the pianist and quintet leader on this scratchy old 1958 LP. ua-cam.com/video/eAC5E2DfX7k/v-deo.html His style features cascading arpeggio rolls up and down the keys. Also really beautiful chord voicings. Worth a listen. And thanks Kent Hewitt for your fascinating video series.

Jobim was one of the greatest composers....even though he stuck pretty much to Bossa Novas. Find me a Jobim swing tune!
Sir,you r Great Jazz player,I'm try to learn yo'r lesson,Thank u very much.
