The beauty in this song lies in the simplicity of its melody. Then, Herby puts this amazing solo, turning this moment in a masterpiece. Jobim, not only the father of bossa nova, but the only one who really understood it in its core.
Carlos Jobim was the King of Bossa Nova, an unparalleled composer and musician, and Herbie Hancock is a versatile top-notch pianist. However, I find the bass player too good to be true. He did six slides during the song, which is just mesmerizing. I've never heard of such electrifying bass notes in my life. I wish I knew the name of the bassist. He's out of the world. I salute to all the players of this God-given magnificent song.

Herbie is always wonderful, and one of my greatest lifetime hero’s. But I’m surprised how often he seems to need his sheet music with him. Does he not know the changes to Waves? Even after the rehearsal I presume they had? Just an observation..;)
Fernando Hatsumura Thanks so much for the information on Neves. I finally figured it out after many viewings of Jobim videos and now watching Neves videos as much. I am crazy about Bossa Nova. I appreciate you getting back to me. This remains one of my favorite videos!! Thanks, friend!!
No problem, Carole. I love Bossa Nova and Jobim's music too. Castro Neves is also a giant himself! I'm so glad to be able to watch these rare videos on UA-cam. Cheers!
The music of the 70s,80s,90s are quite depressing and ambiguous - I'm not saying it's not good, it IS very good sometimes, but always ambiguous and with a strange dark melancholy. But jazz and bossa-nova music are precise/direct and always uplifting, even the sad songs are ultimately UP and not DOWN.
Herbie’s piano solo is extraordinary

I love how Herbie just completely takes it in a different direction .
This is the best version in my opinion, just beautiful! Jobim is a timeless master!

2 great masters musicians, Jobim & Herbie at their best playing together. The 80’s and 90’s great time to create music.

This cant be real
Not sure what Herbie is doing up there before he starts playing ????
patricky9 listening
Playing strings
"São Paulo", with a "u".
Composing a chart ??
raro
I find it odd that Herbie brought the music over to read the changes when he improvised … the changes are easy
He was reading his solo.
