🎹 Jazz Piano Tutorial ❤
Tenderly got to be one of the most beautiful ballads ever written, both in melody and lyrics. I couldn't believe I ever had a chance to learn how to play it through your methodical presentation. Thank you so much!
Couldn't agree more!
Thank you, Mr. Winston. You have made these difficult jazz chords compelling enough for a guy who has no jazz piano experience to be willing to try it out.
Nice. I like that went slowly enough that I could follow most of the chords. Supporting the melody with stacked 4ths was beautiful.
Just found your channel, love it, and helps a lot to get into Jazz, thx a lot!!!!
Tenderly is a difficult song because it always provokes the players to "improve" or "color" both the melody and the harmony. But this is one of those melodies that you can't touch without breaking its natural charm. Improvising here is dangerous and usually only reveals how far the musician is from the soul of this melody. Its arrangement, however, is beautiful and preserves the spirit of this song. Congratulations!
Tony, which lead sheet book are you using for these arrangements?
This one is from the "new Real Book 1'. I have lots of lead sheet books. most are available free online.
I really don't know any jazz tutorials on UA-cam that helped me as much as yours. Thank you!
Agree
Thank you Tony for creating these wonderful videos. I am a beginner and appreciate your patience and calmness. You're like the Mr Rogers of piano teachers. 🎹 ❤️
Tony, getting back to basics is the best advice. I'm guilty of trying too much too soon and it can get frustrating at times. I appreciate you.
I've learned "Thats All" from you, now I'll go for "Tenderly". With this repertoire, this kind of education, the calm and tender coach, Your good pronunciation (for us where english is not the native language) I will go from piano owner to piano player over time. Hurray
Indeed! I shared his tutorial to one of my friends who very novice on piano playing. She was excited because Tony wasn’t loud or way enthusiastic 😁 he’s just straight forward and just imparting his humble experience!
He taught me Blue Moon and Charlie Browns Blues! This is next! Although it’s a little difficult for me. I need to find some of his easier intermediate level pieces
Enjoyed seeing/hearing the chords in slow motion. Like your down to earth teaching style-without all the hype and ego of some of the others.
Talked to Ted Howe a couple months ago. Wanted to study in person, but he is not doing that right now.
Found others-and really like the Mantooth book you showed us. Learning those chords is both eye opening and ear opening.
Thanks for your videos and wisdom. You are the best online. Miller
Concentrate on the basics, great advice! Many thanks this is excellent
Your tutorials are so very relaxing and informative! Thank you so much for making these :)
Thank you for doing this! I'm not much of a pianist and have been a bit stuck for some time. This gives me motivation to take a few steps back, look up some easy jazz standards and go from there. Thank you!
Please go on with this beautiful beginner series!
Complex ideas presented sweetly & simply…..Thank You Tony!!!😊
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and enormous talent with such generosity.
I'm always watching your videos and I feel... I'm really privileged.
Best Regads... and that's Jazz.. that's amazing music!
You are so very welcome!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent so freely. You are a great teacher! I am a big fan of your work and have learned so much watching your videos.
beautiful your arrangement tony. don't forget to put a link for this arrangement. thank you
Thanks for the reminder.
Here it is: bit.ly/3LCsZov
@@TonyWinston thank you maester
I played all through junior high and high school so I can enjoy classical, but man do I appreciate having access to some beginner level jazz to learn from. I would loathe to drill through a bunch of music that isn’t something I necessarily WANT to play. Being able to start with musically interesting things like this is such a blessing for me. Thx so much man. With type of starting point I know I’ll be able stay interested and even be inspired while I’m practicing
I remember Tenderly very well from my childhood. My mom used to sing and play it on piano. It was her favorite song.
Anyway, after watching this, I transposed it to C (where I can sing it) and arranged it for electric guitar. I'm stunned at how lush it sounds on any instrument. It's also a song that begs for a rubato style.
Thanks so much for the inspiration!
I like the first part… I‘ am a beginner!
Great video! Excellent explanation, demonstrations and charts.
I’m subscribed to at least 150 channels, yours is the 1st where I’ve clicked the notification bell 🔔.
I’m very happy I found you, so I can get my piano chops (I have none) up 🆙
Thanks, that chord-note-at-a-time method made it much easier to see/hear exactly what you were doing. No straining needed on my end.
What a delicate and ravishing level of artistry thank you 🙏
😊 Thank you for this simplified version for us beginners ❤. Sounds great. More beginner songs would be great. Autumn leaves- Misty?
Thanks so much for presenting this song. It's lovely
Hi Tony, just discovered your channel - great to finally find something that I can connect with. I'm a late (piano) starter but have some theory from a long time ago - this has got me fired up! I'm looking forward to working through the series 😊🎹
Thankyou Mr. Tony.....I'm learning alot from you...again.. thankyou sir
Thanks for your simple explanation of the definition of jazz and for showing us how did you play your own arrangement for the song
Beautiful song Tony!!! I always wanted to play that song Tony..
Thanks a lot.
One of the first tunes I learned. Jackie Gleason had it as a background for his show. I picked up a lot from hearing your version.
Good. Starting I'm lazy no need 13 drop2 you are right Makes us lose interest thanks
Always had difficulty with 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths. Didn’t know that the 7th will suffice.
Everyone's positive comments have covered it mostly for me Tony just a short add on "Beginner series videos" Yes please I'II be there. Gus
Hi Tony, Could you a do a video on how to accompany singers please ? , I find it different to playing alone or in trio. Many thanks Simon.
Very educational, I really liked it Tony.
Thank you so much!
He is a good teacher , understand right away , and hold then repeat and continue , change of chords , very good
9:01 "What is Jazz? Its taking a song and playing it wrong" - Spinal Tap. Oh man that had me laughing....
Yes please, more easy tutorials. I need to build my repertoire!
"what is jazz? is taking a song and playing it wrong" 🤣 🤣🤣
Love it
I play this tune easily on guitar but I'm terrible on piano...I'll still keep trying, thank you!
Muchas gracias Tony , tutorial muy instructivo de una bella canción
Tenderly was very sophisticated. Would love to get the sheet music?
Hey Tony, thanks for the lessons! I like how your style is approachable for beginners like me. I'm learning from a teacher on more bebop style mostly because I want to learn how to shred lol but the basics you talk about are fantastic.
Votre arrangement est magnifique il y a beaucoup d emotion dans votre facon de jouer je suis pianiste classique et jazz vous m aviez mis un beau commentaire sur les yeux noirs.le bonjour de Marseille.
What a great tutorial. I'm learning this with my piano teacher, who is guiding me along similar lines to you.
And let’s not forget about but Powell and Dr Barry Harris
Thank you for shearing your approach and rendition of this song !
Do you like cashew nuts? Do you know?

Truly wonderful,. Tony. you are the real deal.
Thanks , Tony . You are very generous.
Thank you so much Tony for doing this. Tenderly is one of those songs that is just lovely and your arrangement is just wonderful too!
Many thanks!
Hello Tony how are you? Your friend Reinhard from Germany has not visited you for a lang time, at your home at the piano. Now I am once again at your side listening, practicing Tender vouching with you. I am glad to see you again. Greetings from me 🙋♀my sympathetic and best "Jazz-Teacher," Tony.
Welcome back! I should revisit this video also. It's a great song and I haven't played it in a while.
Enjoy your tutorials! Thank you!
You are a great teacher, thank you for sharing!
One of my favorites, also to sing 🎤

Hello Tony ! Your arrangement is a very usefull approach for improvization.
Would it be possible to get this arrrangement or shall we have to copy it ? Thank's.
Should be in the description
Thankyou so much for making this wonderful tutorials. I enjoy the way you teach. You are so experienced and make them so simple tu understand. I love specially this Tenderly song. Regards from Mexico City.
This was the first piece I tried after your tutorial,,, I’ve been hooked ever since. Thanks Tony!
Awesome. Thanks Olivia!
Great tutorial! Thank you. 🎉
that was extremely helpful thanks for the free videos. I am taking lesssons again and have always been so confused by just proper technique. rly helpful to have someone in person to critique n give advice. working on any new projects? also please post some originals :)
Glad to help. I don't have many originals, just a few classical style things and some songs with crappy lyrics. I am working on two CDs and have plans for a third. One of my CDs is on youtube MONDO SWING ua-cam.com/video/k5kZqTELnJU/v-deo.html
Will you transcribe your arrangement for us when it’s finished?
I will consider that. It has dropped off my radar but I need a new song to work on so stay withy me. . Right now I'm scoring an arrangement to 'youve got a friend in me.
Your music is really my age
Love this Tony. I’m a Jazz singer but have always wanted to play as well. You make me want to play and I’m hoping to do both. So beautiful to listen to. I’m just beginning, although not a total beginner on piano. I’m grateful that you are giving guidance for beginners for Jazz piano. Thank you so much. 🙏❤️
very nice. thanks
Great tutorials Tony, I've been a pro guitarist, and came to.piano over lockdown, because I love the tunes... and that's what you teach....many thanks...
You're a legend Tony!
Connie from Australia :)
Wow, thank you!
Always a pleasure, Mr. Winston! Ciao from Rome, m.
Ciao !!
Thanks so much - this is almost perfect for me! I've played jazz guitar for decades and have recently started with piano as a way to approach solo playing that has that 'smokey cocktail lounge at 2 AM' tinge of jazz ballads where some pianist will play 'Body and Soul' (or Tenderly) with 15 verses (ok, that's the dream!). I know all about drop 2's and altered chords on guitar, but just learning how to play chords of any kind on piano. I know that m7b5 = m6 up a minor third device which is very helpful to me on piano. Also Cmaj7-Cmaj6-Dm7-Dm6 as a simple way to play 1-6-2-5. Keep it up!
Lezione magistrale and beautiful arrangement, Maestro Tony. Very instructive, many thanks!
Thanks Tony!
million thank you Tony, I come from Taiwan, I love your teaching so amazing ! and so helpful and wonderful for me, especially, i am a new jazz student, every video you made so great ! thank you again 😀
you're a great teacher
Jazz College A+ tutorials. Great lesson, it was very helpful and beautiful.
Thank you
.
Could you start to play the song first, then only after explain. It would help.
I assume the viewer will be familiar with the song and if not, become familiar with it.
Tony, is this song in 4/4 or 3/4. I'm having a hard time trying to count it.
It can be in either and sometimes I'm not sure what time signature I'm in. I'm trying to write out my arrangement right now and I'm sticking with 4/4
When you play the mini arpeggio and scale fills how do you choose a start and finish note?
I don't know. I just try stuff out until I find something that works
I've been searching for jazz piano instruction on UA-cam for years and this is by far the best and most clearly explained jazz course I have found.
That was absolutely crystal clear!! Now I really would love to try your advanced version. Love you arrangement! Would you add the names of the chords please please? I am very bad at reading.....
I know it's a bit cheeky of me asking, but if you have a spare moment, it would really be a tremendous help to non readers like me to decifer the notes. Your arrangement is TOP!! Thank you so very mucg@
TONY! Where have you been all my life! Thank you for these videos!
Very good!
Many thanks Tony for your back to basics approach to playing jazz and improvisation. It opens a door in the soul. I had to laugh when you rightly mentioned the possibilities of interpreting classical music. I was very nearly expelled from school for doing precisely that. My parents received a letter from the Head Master advising them that my elder brother would not benefit from continued attempts to teach him at the school. He left.
I was banned at the age of 14yrs from playing the pianos in the music school unless it was a school activity. I was allowed to play a piano in the Sixth Form room which was as far away from the music school as was physically possible. This individual rule lasted to the end of my days there.
At 75 yrs I am trying to catch up - your sessions are invaluable. It is so refreshing to hear you encouraging us to explore
Thank you.
Thank you Anthony
I’m 77 can’t play but feel so inspired to learn. Your teaching although is a foreign language to me, is just so calm and gentle and inviting. Maybe I should get some basics first but there are so many on UA-cam I don’t know where to go first, but hey that my problem, thanks for the inspiration it’s just lovely listening to you beginner tunes don’t sound like what you play. I’ll get my self an electric keyboard first.
thanks Tony, I appreciate your approach , especially in enjoying music and feel the armony. Thanks in particular for your improvisation : I 'm a beginner and I understand things also doing the same of others
Your piano sounds so good and it’s perfectly tuned. Great video as always.
I’ve been watching your tutorials for quite a while. I enjoyed this one mainly because you started with the basic arrangement and then added your beautiful chord (triads) melody arrangement. The chords you played were great especially with the added arpeggios. Great tutorial!!!
Yours is a labor of love on music, thanks a lot. Your explanations shred light into the logic behind the simbols of writen music: it's been an invaluable help to find the sense encripted on sheet music. Thanks a lot.
