Thanks, William- I hear you haha! Yeah to be fair, anyone trying to sound like Art Tatum is a bit ambitious... but it can't hurt to study his playing, try to understand it, and come up with ways to work on his techniques. In the end, it'll just inform our own playing in unique ways, which I think is the point anyway.
My pleasure. Yeah, Tatum is a difficult subject to cover- I did my best to break it down into manageable and digestible information that we can apply to our playing quickly.
You’re really an amazing pianist. I grew up on Art Tatum. You’re the only one I know who can teach it. I never thought it was possible to play like him. You make it look really easy!
I always admired Oscar Peterson for his genuine respect for Art Tatum despite his own obvious exceptional ability. Your tutorial demonstrates a similar 'modesty ' in as much as apart from the extremely helpful teaching elements, you clearly belong to the top drawer in your own right! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video Noah! you've really become one of my favourite youtubers/instagrammers over this lockdown period, I've finally made some decent progress in my jazz piano skills thanks to your videos. Keep dropping these absolute gems!!
I don't even know how to play the piano but from 14:51 to 15:12 when you're doing the final chords, heck lololol if I could just play THAT!! That would be enough for me to play around on a mall piano. it might be simple stuff to all the other commenters on here that know how to play piano but to me that's......I'm envious hats off to you sir 👏👏
Damn!!!!!! I always womdered what he was thinking when he does that last harmonic trick. Its simple when u do it but obviously when he does it.... he puts it in crazy places that make it sound bananas!! Great video!!!
Noah, I really enjoyed the fact you are remembering a great one. Art Tatum was a legend. What I find amazing is his improvisational skills. Thank you very much
I ran across this video, looked on your store, saw Full Collection Bundle, saw Black Friday coupon. Rest is history. Just got through a few of the PDFs + videos and there is an incredible amount of quality content here! It's like unlocking the second half of the map in a video game. Stuff I always knew was there, but didn't know how to get there. Thanks, Noah! To others who don't want to buy the full pack, the Stride Exercises book is really juicy!
Noah thanks for this video. Even approaching Tatum’s extraordinary technique is a difficult task to be sure. Dave Frank has presented some material on Tatum as well. But where his approach, your approach and method book analyses fall short is by failing to give references to specific tunes he recorded. At this point in his interpretation he did this and give a demonstration. The very general ideas you are presenting are helpful but could be better if applied to a specific tune and set of chord changes. Of course there are several good books of Tatum transcriptions out there but they also fall short in my opinion because they often do not include his best stuff when interpreting lesser known standards like “So Beats My Heart For You” or “Don’t Worry About Me.”
I want to be as good as you, want to follow you to learn more from you because I believe you are my breakthrough as far as jazz music is concerned.. Please help me... How do you I link up with you ??
Art Tatum is the only recorded legitimate Jedi name for a pianist there ever was.. very rich and insightful video, reminds me of an 1980 interview between Master Oscar Peterson and Count Basie saying ¨I don`t think he could stand any spaces¨
Honestly, Noah, you're the best. Love these "How to sound like" series. Keep 'em coming please! :) And as always, thanks a lot, this content means a lot and makes all the difference!
Bro youre a savage. Hit me up if you ever need an electric bassist. Im really having a hard time meeting jazz players (since im a death metal guy) but my college teacher putter turned me onto the deep cuts ten years ago and my interest only grows with age. Great content, cheers man.
FFS.... your instruction is invaluable. I can't wait to download your PDFs. Thank you. I've watched plenty of tutorials but you nail the approach and keep my attention.
….forgot to add - Towards the end re: “reharm on ii-V-I’s” there is a misspeak on your video as the resolved I chord is E flat (not B flat) major. (See also the erroneous text accompanying the video.) This is simply a minor “speaking” mistake for any of us, I’m sure, as you actually play it the right way - plus the rest of video is really fabulous!
Thanks, Adam. I've always loved his "Willow Weep For Me," as well as "Nice Work If You Can Get It" off of The Complete Capitol Recordings (which I believe are on streaming platforms). Do you have any favorites yourself?
Noah Kellman ooh yeah those ones are killing. my personal favorites are his live recording of humoresque on youtube, along with Isn’t this a lovely day
@@NoahKellman if u listen to at least 20-30 Johnny costa songs u can notice at least 3-5 tricks he uses extremely often in plenty of songs over and over, one of them being 2 handed blues scale runs, and when he plays runs he randomly jumps octaves goes up and down plenty and uses chromatics a lot
It's probably too late to ask, but do you know other keys or chords where that C7alt run can be used? It looks like it won't work unless it's fingered 1-2-3 and the thumb always hits a white key. I tried it in Db but hit a wall.
Hey ,I love your channel man. I had just one doubt- WHAT CHORD PROGRESSION IS PLAYED WHEN THE SOLOIST IS SOLOING. Please Noah I have been looking all over for this answer please please please man
Hey Bishnu, do you mean for a specific song? When a soloist is soloing, you play the chords of the song you are playing. The progression is the same as during the melody.
Hey mason, good question. Believe it or not, I like to tap my foot on all four directly on the pedal. I love how it adds a little sustain to the bass notes, then releases the sustain so the chord hits quickly. Make sense?
I thought it was interesting when you referred to us as being mere mortals because back in the day everyone knew when Art Tatum sat at the piano, "God was in the house!"
imagine if this video is just him saying "you cant" and then end it
but man, this guy got the skills
hahah just read this again... maybe that should have been the video LOL!
The title sounded too ambitious, but the first minute proved it was no joke
Thanks, William- I hear you haha! I literally said out loud "doubt" then was absolutely proven wrong lol, great tutorial video
Thanks it’s so rare to find these kind of videos. Or any kind of tutorial involving tatum

The fact that you understand the logic behind Art Tatum's playing and you can break it down for us mere mortals is proof that you're a replica of him.
If you don't understand electricity, light bulbs look like magic

The fact that you can break down Art Tatum's playing, shows what a monster pianist you really are!!!!
Thanks, Cortez 🙏🙏
Sir...
You have done the unthinkable and been able to give us insignificant beings a glimpse of Art's God tier technique...thank you so much.
You're welcome, Urahara!
Couldn't agree more 👏🏿.
I really enjoyed this!!! I love it when keyboard players say the full names of the chords but you also shared the fingerings.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!!

That's incredible. This is a terrific video! It won't be that easy to play like he does. Also, the speed he achieves is amazing.

You are an excellent teacher. I've been playing my entire life and I love the way you explain how it works because you understand it very well.
I lost 3 fingers in Iraq so I will live vicariously through your playing.
Sorry to hear that, and thank you so much for your service. Glad to provide you with some vicarious piano playing to enjoy!
