Original lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese:
Vou te contar, os olhos já não podem ver
Coisas que só o coração pode entender
Fundamental é mesmo o amor
É impossível ser feliz sozinho...
O resto é mar, é tudo que eu não sei contar
São coisas lindas que eu tenho pra te dar
Vem de mansinho a brisa e me diz:
‘É impossível ser feliz sozinho...’
Da primeira vez era a cidade...
Da segunda o cais e a eternidade...
Agora eu já sei da onda que se ergueu no mar
E das estrelas que esquecemos de contar
O amor se deixa surpreender
Enquanto a noite vem nos envolver...
A.C.Jobim said once: I'm honored by a great Musician such as Oscar Peterson who played a lot of my compositions even better than me!
I heard this version more than 2 hundred times and I've never got enough of it!
Tom was being modest... He was a simple pianist but it was so beautiful to hear. What a humble genius...
@@catherinefranks786 :: Yes, I second that: Jobim was modest and could evoke a mood, a "Bossa mood", which in itself is almost unattainable for other musicians. As a young musician Tom Jobim was unsurpassed, perhaps with close competition (only on the guitar - style) by Gilberto.
(There was a head in the audience, was it Jobim's?)

As well he should: ACJ didn't just influence people who came after him, he was influencing his contemporaries such as OP and Santana, which is even more remarkable. And Frank was a fan, if not a contemporary. Anyways, they all kick ass, but OP proved partial to Wave, recording it in studio and live, several times...
Just a soul moving sensation created by the merging of this trips superb talent and concerted blend of expression!
Oscar Peterson plays like an alien with several brains. His technique is beyond comprehension.
Can't agree more... 🙂
The pioano is an extension of OSCAR's BRAIN, and his playing is the projection
of his creative improvisation of his melody. As he said.. he composes as he plays.
Yeah Chris Plummer talks about how in Hi school Oscar would start noodling on the school piano in the auditorium and soon it'd be jam packed but the The Viking is otherwordly as well ! I'm a bassist , but Ørsted is fierce yo ahhyee!
jajaja...quizas quieras decir que toca...Like a Gods
sin duda
Both hands in unison from approx. 4:50 to 5:35: a level of badassery that may never have been experienced before in human history.
you can see him sweating buckets after that run
Son Of Art Tatum, at the piano.Others sound nice, but none of them improv like Oscar. He knew it,and we know it.
@bill Bloggs That's an etude, something you practice and learn. This was improvised, straight from Oscar's brain.
holy shit that's incredible...
@@jmarvins I was sweating buckets after that run.
it is absolutely honoring for me, as a brazilian, to see that our great musicians were recognized even by some genius such as peterson. unfortunately, I was born after jobim’s death, but I hope and do my best to keep our legacy alive. viva a bossa nova!
Amen Brother.
You have a wonderful musical heritage, which is admired all round the world!
Yes! I feel bad that many Brazilians associate bossa nova for being elite and pretentious. This is not the case at all! It’s actually the best style of music ever written. And it CRUSHES the funkee music or whatever the heck it’s called now
Mark Wahl I agree with you. A hundred percent.
We're grateful to Charlie Byrd, who got a grant to travel to Brazil in the '50s and came back to the US to introduce this wonderful music to the rest of the world. I worked in Washington in the summer of 1962, when Byrd was playing bossa nova in clubs in the area. There are words put to Wave which I repeat when I am contemplatively invited into God's presence. "The fundamental loneliness goes whenever two can dream a dream together."
Sometimes watching the audience's faces is as fine as watching the players. They know they how honoured they are
The most incredible jazz pianist ever to live. May he RIP. You are truly missed Oscar.
Oscar Peterson was a trully piano player hero for millions over all the world! A genius of a human race!
No human being had such a command over an instrument than Oscar Petersen on the Piano
He is very great at the Piano.
Jobim great composer and Oscar Peterson greatest jazz pianist!
Omg.. this is god level improvisation
Oscar Peterson was the best player of the world . Ever!!!
QUESTA STUPENDA COMPOSIZIONE DI ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM HA INCANTATO IL MONDO INTERO!
The whole rhythm section on 4 strings...Peterson and Pass had the greatest backline EVER with this tremendous bass player...
NHØP was one of the best double bassists jazz has ever seen
the world has ever seen. The dude made me respect basses after I would usually skip their solos, what a beast
We are so lucky someone caught this on camera. ❤️U
Oscar petersons solo here is so crisp, smooth, and soothing that I listen to it almost everyday. My favorite song.
How do I miss them Tom Jobim, Oscar Peterson and all the others who made this possible, you made me cry again!!! A Dutch Woman.
Music of staggering sophistication, virtuosity and feel. The more one knows about music the further away from possible this seems.
Daisy Holmes.....totally agree.
staggering sophistication that
totally transports us to faraway
exotic places!
I've been listening to the incomparable OP for the last 50 years. Even today am amazed that no pianist has reached his level of playing. His piano will live on as an inspiration for generations to come.
My late beautiful Mother was a huge Oscar Peterson fan & of course I am too. It's amazing how back then audiences didn't move, dance or show any enjoyment until the very end. This is absolutely wonderful to see.
Where have they been hiding this man? My heart leaps with joy when I hear this man play.
He's playing for Jesus now...
One of the best songs ever written -
All that awesomeness--in 6 minutes and 35 seconds. I need to practice!
He plays same thing with both hands, thats unreal!!!
Monstro do Jazz exaltando Tom Jobim.
Is that Joe Pass? Yes it is! Wow. This video is a find for jazz history for sure.
I listened to his rendition and I'm blown away how absolutely amazingly wonderful it is.
About 40 years ago I bought a set of Six Oscar Peterson discs under the title “exclusively for my friends”.
They were recorded in the home of a German recording engineer in his home in the Black Forest on a number of occasions.
Each of the recordings are taken from parties that were held and different trios featured on each disc and have a very intimate atmosphere of Oscar playing for his friends.
The set is available to download and is still my go to place to listen to fantastic Jazz. RIP Oscar, your talent is sorely missed by those of us who, love jazz.
All that said I think his best version of Wave was on a job I’m album with a green cover and a giraffe, can’t remember what it was called, also, available to download.
Thank you very much for sharing this precious piece of history, Ian, God bless you.
the album is also called wave
Jazz e Bossa Nova numa mistura espetacular! Bravo!!!!
Peterson and Tatum playing together in paradise. What could be better.
i dont think there is enough room for the 2 of them...
ron fisher - Peace and quiet.
Here we witness three masters of jazz playing a song by a master composer. Oscar, Niels, and Joe are so closely bound in playing their rendition of a song that one never tires from hearing. Thank you Alex for sharing this jewel. How can anyone give this a negative
rating?
YES,YES,YES.
Amen to all the comments. The music
transports all jazz lovers to a better
place!!
Três gênios interpretando música de outro gênio. Feliz de quem pode ouvir essa maravilha. Ouçam principalmente o Joe pass.
This is some of the best musical wine I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Oscar, Neil and Joe.
I love how a wave of applause happens when they recognise.
The sound of genius. Incomparable and impeccable.
I was raised on hearing the pure sounds of guitar players like Joe Pass and other jazz greats and it's been very hard to love the sounds of other styles even though they may be incredible players. You'll love Oscar Peterson who is an incredible player for the lack of a better word for this musical genius.
Mágica musical!
Desde Brasil, em 2020.🎶🎵
The people there knew that they were hearing something really special.
Yes, I can tell they were mesmerized just like I am here.
I must have listened to this 40 or 50 times. I just don’t get tired of the four geniuses who gifted us with this wonderful music.
The "Great 3 Ps" - best version I´ve ever heared. Thank you!
And Oscar wiping his face while playing his runs - somewhat humiliating for the rest of the pianists ....
What a great musicians!
Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson.....
Jobim.. ♥
Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen
I love all of the cutaways to the guys shaking their heads. That couldn't me more accurate.
I think the bassist is Nils Henning Orstead Pederson. I saw this trio live at the Blue Room of the Fairmont Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. I was touring with Sha Na Na at the time and (believe it or not), we were going to follow these geniuses for a week, on the same stage, starting the following night.
Ørsted Pedersen
The fundamental loneliness goes whenever two can dream a dream together. Thank you Mr. Peterson💐.
Every time I hear him play this I cry. It is the most amazing rendition. It just moves my emotions. I mean you can just see and hear the ocean when he gets going at the end. Love it.
Quanta saudades do nosso Tom Jobim🇧🇷❤️
El Maestro Soberano. Único e irrepetible. El mejor de todos los tiempos. Lo amo profundamente. Gracias Tom❤
Peterson is so great in this tune !!!
Oh my, sometimes it all co,es together just perfectly. This was one of those rare moments. They will always be here with us through their music.
When I was young, I saw Oscar Peterson at the London House in Chicago, where many jazz greats performed. Oscar was my favorite, and this song is still great. in every way.
Agradeço a Oscar Petersen Trio, minha preferida de Jobim 🇧🇷💖
Wonderful, Mr. Peterson!Q I surely do miss you.
Essa música é fantástica, o estilo bossa nova é leve, light, poucas notas, sutil, diferente dessa .
The BEAUTY of human beings Thanks UNIVERSE For the beauty of it all...
Simply unbelievable! This is a man who had no equal.
Fabuloso Jobim e maravilhosa interpretação do Peterson e banda.
I just love to see music legends play together. Oscar and Joe...mesmerizing
English in direct translation:
I'll tell you, the eyes can no longer see
Things only the heart can understand
Fundamental is really love
It is impossible to be happy alone...
The rest is sea, it's everything I can't tell
There are beautiful things I have to give you
The breeze comes softly and says to me:
'It is impossible to be happy alone...'
The first time it was the city...
From the second, the pier and eternity...
Now I already know about the wave that rose in the sea
And the stars we forgot to count
love lets itself be surprised
As the night comes around us...
God bless you, Angelo.
Thank you! I was wondering what the English lyrics were!
A truly stunning rendition of a lovely song and what a talent he had
Beyond superb, this is the song torn open to grant us listeners a truly out of this world experience. Joe Pass blends his guitar into Oscar's piano in a seamless pattern smoothed by a bass that is as good as an acoustic bass can aspire to. Can you tell that I really like this recording?
I completely agree this recording is absolutely astonishing with its fabulous blend and balance within each instrument and with each other. It’s as if it’s one person controlling them all. Can you tell why I completely agree with your comment?
OP and JP together, seriously how beautifully they danced together.
The very great Joe Pass.
Amidst the genius of Oscar Petersons solo, Joes half step moves into the chords at 5:23 is so badass, it fits so perfectly to the bass in that moment too.
Una interpretazione da Oscar!!!! Insuperabile!!!!!
Oscar's playing is almost unbelievable!
Very thanks.
É verdade, Ignacio, valeu.
Un trío maravilloso, para un tema maravilloso! Grande Oscar
Always looks so happy at the keys, and blows me away with his music.
It's all about understanding the levels of the best, he's just so blessed.
Robert Sorzano he’s not blessed he practices
E Vi pare poco??
I miei sinceri complimenti.

Sensacional.
I loved it, beautiful ! Fantastic ! Oscar Peterson tocando Jobim !
Maravilha!!!
Que lindo!Saudades...
Show! Impecável! ❤️❤️❤️
Understated, elegant display of enormous talent!
A lovely man. And his sound lifts one right off of one's day . . . and onto a rollicking "Wave". Oscar Peterson, bravo! Trio, bravo!
