What a great podcast! I’m grateful to hear a more complete, evolved discussion about codependency and for guidance along a path to healing it. I’m so excited to read the book! Thank you both🙏🏼

Thank you mark for asking about how to cope with what shows up internally when we STOP rescuing, when we see someone we love skidding face first in the wake of our stopping-of-rescuing. I'm dealing with that right now and it is UNcomfortable. I think THIS feeling is why I refused to stop rescuing! To be with ME! What. A. Mind f*.

it's good and valuable to know one's limits and listen to them, and be able to protect your peace, and not rely on helping others to find value in oneself and love, but also... maybe we're all "high functioning codependents" because we're all human, and exchange and community is a huge part of being human
maybe if American society, for one, wasn't so based on personal prowess, egoic pursuits and self-interest, there would be more support for helping one another and less profit made on the backs of those who still want to extend a hand

Amazingly expressed at around 35 mins....after my mother seperarated from my schizophrenic father when i was 7 i bacame the quiet hero. Oldest of 4 kids i honestly believed my mother needed me to cope. She told me to be a second mother. Not heard the hfc person causes explained so well anywhere!❤

Great conversation, thank you. I didn't stop doing this until I was 60 yrs old. I had to move to another state away from all family, but that worked for me. I am wondering though, what about when you have been The Helper to your family, and then when you need help, you do ask, but they either don't show up, or resent helping and complain about it the whole time? I would rather pay someone to help me now, rather than ask a family member for help (not talking about husband and children, but parent and siblings)

I'm seriously messed up in my head and this is way too long for me to sit through. I need short and sweet and straight to the actual point mentioned in the title.

I find that my healing has gotten me hated upon eyesight. Especially in nursing. It’s pure evil. Noticing what an abusive relationship that career path truly is. I’m sick about it.

Thank you for sharing this. When I was in nursing school, the two statements frommy instructors were "100 percent of nurses are codependent" (it is in our nature) and "You will be judged on your documentation." I hit a wall during pandemic and left the industry. Was working home health, hospice, memory care and my gosh that experience sent me into an alchohol addiction, nearly ending my life. Sending you love and gratitude for your indelible kindness in the work you do.
