Melody Beatties work has changed my life. I truly enjoyed this discussion and glad to hear there are others who teach and help us who are Recovering Codependents! ❤ the 12 steps and Al-Anon also saved my life!

It’s an addiction like all addictions. Disease is a broad term. Some people cause hi BP , cholesterol or diabetes w lifestyle & end up w a disease. Splitting hairs re a term is a way to avoid the real issue ur afraid to look at.

Thank you!! Just what I needed! I guess I'm a high functioning co dependent and it comes up at work as a property manager. Also....ugh..relationships...trying to make the break decision:(...so glad I found your podcasts and posts:)

I was a property manager for 23 years… my business partner was a narcissist slumlord and demanded that I gave my all… so I was on call 24/7… single mom of a special needs child…working 60-80 work weeks cuz I got zero child support for 15 years…just needed a flexible job that I can bring my son to work with me. I ended up with many autoimmune diseases. and was needing kidney dialysis due to Lupus. My son ran away… my business partner of 23 years stole my share and I was tossed onto the pavement. That’s what being Codependent brought me cuz I didn’t know any better. Property management is a 24/7 job. It’s not good to have that as a career if one cannot say “No”

This is so misleading! Codependency consists of learned survival skills that we developed as a result of dysfunctional childhoods and traumas. Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn…period. Codependency came out of childhood trauma from being ignored, abused, misunderstood, neglected, and abandoned. In order to heal codependency, you need to heal the trauma. No other way around it. We weren’t born with it… not a disease! Our codependent skills probably saved our lives as children, but now as adults It’s doing nothing but harming us, and needs to be understood. Takes a lot of work!!!!

Isn't the disease to please a catchphrase? I think it's good to have all of these view points. This issue has so many layers.

It’s the polar opposite of a narcissist. One has huge empathy and the other has none.

Co-dependency is not a disease. The end.

    • @Truthseeker-sd2ho

It absolutely is not! It’s learned survival skills developed in a dysfunctional childhood situation. I’m going through hell learning and healing!!

It certainly isn't a healthy relationship structure and tends to need life long management.

Melody Beattie’s book is not based on Al Anon or people that are codependent because they are with an addict or an alcoholic. It’s part of it but it’s not all of it as she explains it. There are four different types or scenarios where people become codependent. why don’t you read the book… The newest version is out and the workbook
