The story is based on facts. Alpha Centauri is the closest planet system in our neighborhood. It is 4 lightyears away and has 3 suns. There are 2 known planets in this system of which one of them is in the habital zone like earth is.
When they mentioned a 3 star system 4 light years away I about fell out of my chair. I've been reading scifi since the early 80s and that is a VERY FAMILIAR SYSTEM to me!!
(Although the third star is so far away from the other two that it's unlikely to have much influence on a planet, though I guess at that point the 3 bodies are star 1, 2, and the planet...)
Sadly alpha centauri is closer to a binary star system so the author took some liberties there. The 2 main stars form a 2 body system and it's stable, they just orbit around a centre of mass, the distance between them varies between saturn's orbit and pluto's orbit. The 3rd star is a red dwarf with a mass of like 1/8 of the sun but the difference is that it orbits the other 2 stars like a planet would but much much further away, like 10s of thousands of times further away than the earth is from the sun. The planets around it are pretty much unaffected by the two larger stars like how the moon is in a stable orbit around the earth and isn't really affected by the sun in that way.
Don't get me wrong, it's still super cool just it's not like how the alpha centauri system actually is.
