    One big difference between your test and a real world situation is that your test subject was expecting and anticipating it. A person boarding your boat looking to rob you would not be expecting to get hit with those.

    • @TwoAfloat
      @TwoAfloat  9 місяців тому +33

      Yes, but a robber boarding the boat is only one of many likely threats. There are plenty of situations where the aggressor may not be expecting to be hit but is determined to cause harm and still may not be deterred. Or where the aggressor is wearing thicker clothing, has an altered mental state (drugs or otherwise), or has a high threshold for pain. Our test also does not demonstrate the effects wind would have on the max projectiles, a test that has direct relevance to boats at anchor. But your point is well taken and I agree in the real world there would likely be a stronger deterrence than it seems in these tests, at least in the most common situations. Though possibly not in the most severe. For us the tests were valuable in better understanding the deployment and effects of the system so we can have discussions like this from a more informed starting point and be better prepared should a worst case scenario happen. You may be interested in cruisersafety.info It’s a document that takes a deep dive into this topic. Thank you for sharing this important point.

      Thank you too@@svdragonfly6664 . What is your defense plan after deploying the spray? Presumably the aggressor will have difficulty leaving your boat after exposure? Most of what I learned about chem sprays stipulate "run away" as the final step after use, something that's hard to do while on a boat at anchor. That is what originally attracted us to a stand-off kinetic solution, but we're always looking for new ideas or perspectives...

    9:20 Yes, but the thing you need to remember is that the perpetrator won't know what he's being shot with. All he'll know is that you pulled out something that looks like a handgun, started shooting, and now he's being hit and feeling pain. If the perp is in a situation where he can flee, and not get shot anymore, I would be willing to bet that he would.

So, unless you are going up against cartel members, Al-Qaeda or a perp hopped up on angle dust, this is NOT a realistic scenario. Youre also using this on a combat hardened person whos had previously been exposed by chemical irritants. Also most ppl are not going to empty their magazine right off the bat. Try engaging him directly and not just shooting the whole magazine at once. So as someone who uses these daily i know the true effects of this product. I am a big Byrna fan mostly do to the realism of the launcher combined with the pierce and shoot technology but now I have to admit I have to change my self defense strategy depending on the threat level especially if I cannot count on the chemicals breaking or effectiveness. I really hate the thought of aiming at the face but it is something I’m going to have to start practicing as an alternative. By far this is the best Byrna video on UA-cam and I will be sharing it! Not a fan of this review. You have trained military expert that trains snipers and other professionals about a product that is not designed to be lethal OR incapacitate. The level of incapacitation gives the victim TIME to get out of the situation. In a “controlled” environment using a “expert” who has experienced high level military training including gas chambers, etc giving a review of a deterrent and another option of LE to use in the field so they don’t have to shoot and kill a person with a stick, knife, rock, etc is a great option. Highly unlikely Force Recon, Navy Seals, Rangers, or ParaRescue will be out fitting their squads with Byrna. Just saying guys, the review is flawed and HIGHLY out of context and realistic use cases. Go and get 5 volunteers of the street and run the same test and you’ll have a more accurate depiction of the effectiveness of this weapon platform than using GI Joe…Just saying…

While the Byrna Kinetic and Max Rounds definitely deliver some serious impact, it's important to remember that they have their limitations. As some commenters noted, relying solely on non-lethal options may not be the best choice when dealing with an armed threat. As someone who has been responding to Police calls in the worst district of Baltimore City for the last 10 years and has responded to countless armed suspect calls, what people must realize is these less lethal tools are great, but they are most effective against an approaching unarmed attacker. For an armed attacker, I would resort to an actual firearm loaded with bullets.
    Purchasing the black colored Byrna less lethal pistols can potentially save your life in many different situations where an armed attacker is approaching with a firearm in an attempt to either attack, car jack, or rob a victim since the vast majority of the time, when an attacker is looking for a victim, they are looking for an easy victim, and just the sight of what looks to be a real gun being pulled in self-defense is enough in the vast majority of cases to send an attacker running with their tail between their legs even if they are brandishing a real firearm because they don't want to risk losing their life over committing a crime that they can just pick another easy victim who is unarmed and carry out on.
    It's not something I would put my life on but in the vast majority of cases, that is how it plays out.
    I recommend to students who I train in the use of both less lethal and lethal defense to carry several less lethal options on them in addition to a firearm loaded with bullets. You can never go wrong with a can of pepper spray, a Taser Pulse, a Byrna pistol, and a pistol loaded with bullets. For an unarmed attacker, I would resort to anything besides a pistol loaded with bullets, but anytime an attacker is armed with any sort of weapon in their hands, it's right to the pistol loaded with bullets.

      I can tell you kimber life act pepper spray is potent as it gets. I had a guy try to take my truck by force one night in a parking lot. I grabbed it out of the center console and hit him at near point blank range. He ate the full spray in the eyes. ( life act uses a pyrotechnic delivery system to squirt it some distance) after the first hit he staggered and I hit him a second time with the bottom shot ( it’s got 2 shots, one top and one bottom and the device handles like a small firearm). He tripped over himself as he started running away, it was right about then the burn probably kicked in. He screamed and I never saw someone run so fast. The police came and took a report until their radio crackled about a guy who just showed up at a clinic with his face covered in a red sticky burning substance ( life act is dyed red for easy identification). Cops said they would be in touch and they took off. The right pepper spray is nasty stuff

      The Bryana is significantly weaker than options available by Umurex. I have a 20 joule HDP50 that I wouldn't even recommend testing on a person. Also these kinetic rounds are hard but they are not steel core kinetics. Berna are cool more compact and have better loading mechanics but Umurex raw potential far exceeds Berna. This hole drill would have went different if they used a HDp 50 20 joule or worse a HDX 40 joule (should be called hopefully not lethal)

    Wow thank you so much for this live-demo. This whole thing is the equivalent of someone saying "Jeet kun do" or "wing chung" is effective in a real fight and then you guys actually testing it out in the octagon. Unfortunately I live in Canada and our options are really highly limited. At home I have dogs so it's not problem but I started walking around a bullet-proof backpack "just-in-case". I've been thinking lately what I could sneak in there and have been looking into Byrna. I'm looking mainly into active-shooter scenarios here. Your demo clearly shows that this would not even slow down a motivated gunman with nothing to lose. Brian wasn't even wearing armor!

    Excellent! Pepper balls are useful for LEOs, not for personal defense. Although I agree with the debrief, the test should show what would happen if someone was charging the Byrna holder, with a knife or club. First of all they wouldn't even attack until they were within 1o feet at the most. They could close that 10 feet in 2 seconds or less. Legally if you pull out the Byrna and shoot a belligerent homeless person 20+ feet away. you may get charged with aggravated assault, if they are just threatening with their fist. If you spray a belligerent homeless person, etc., with pepper spray, no one is going to say anything. Pain compliance with someone coming at you with a hatchet, is a dangerous message to feed to the general public. Thanks for this video. I am subscribing just to help the channel.

      Thank you for the valuable comment and insight. One use case where perhaps the Byrna chem and/or kinetic rounds might be useful would be if you're on a boat at anchor and are approached by people paddling up in a canoe or small dinghy with intent to harass or possibly rob (especially dinghy motors). I know that's a very specific scenario, but it the most common, though still rare, threat faced by the cruising community. In that case we think perhaps the chem rounds have a use. The idea would be to fire a few rounds into the bow of the approaching boat thus impacting the operators of the boat as they move through the cloud. To your point, another situation where a less-lethal option may be useful for self-defense would be against an approaching aggressive animal, eg. aggressive dog. We will incorporate your feedback into a followup video if we make one, thanks again.

    I'm a new Byrna LE owner and am absorbing all the information I can. Your demonstration is easily the most objective I've found. I would only say that I personally would never expect my Byrna to stop an assailant with a firearm. It's just a losing scenario from the start. You're better off taking cover wherever you can if you're unable to have your own firearm. In my situation I'm most likely to be faced with someone trying to strong-arm rob me. I would hope that the Byrna would be more effective in a scenario like that, even if they possibly have a knife. These kinds of criminals look for targets of opportunity, and I think the Byrna has a good chance of convincing them that they have better opportunities elsewhere. I also live in a warm climate so wearing layers is rare. Though windy weather is common, something to think about with chemical rounds. Thank you very much for the video and your commitment.

    • @TwoAfloat
      @TwoAfloat  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for sharing those points and perspectives. Based on my experiences with the system, if you are in a windy area I would consider the risks of having the OC/CS impact you as well (as it did us in the video when we inadvertently walked through the residual 'cloud'). This is even more of an issue at close range. Also, the chemical rounds take a few seconds for the effects to start. Perhaps you may be best served by using kinetic rounds, or some kinetic rounds to cause the aggressor to stop and/or back up, followed by a few chemical rounds to further incapacitate them as you escape? I'm hoping to test this use in the near future but to be frank Byrna ghosted me after this video was released so I'm having difficulty getting projectiles... Thanks again, Ryan

    I mean... you tell us in the beginning dude is experienced & good enough at what he does to train Ukrainian soldiers, and train ppl here too. He's litrrally trained and conditioned to ignore pain. Most bad guys, whether theyre tough or not (and theres some tough bad guys) ardnt trained like that, and a lot of them only go for targets that look easy. So i dont fedl that this test besns Byrna cant deter an attacker.
    Also, you avoid the testers face for obvious reasons. Irl if someones attacking me and they get close enough im aiming at whatever part of the body i need to to get the guy to stop - if he has a bulky coat that may be his face.
    Theres also the fact that the tester knew what this was. Irl, youre a bad guy, you try to attack someone, they whip out what looks like a gun & suddenly you feel searing pain - they may think hes being shot with a real gun, and thats a deterrent too.
    All tools have limits. I appreciate the vid, and it was funny too! Lol. Just saying this doesnt deter me from getting a Byrna.

    • @TwoAfloat
      @TwoAfloat  8 місяців тому +4

      You make some good points. I think it's important to consider the fact that Brian's training had no effect on the multiple projectiles that did not properly deploy their irritant, nor does it impact his physiological response to the chemical, only his ability to function despite the physiological response. I agree, face shot would be effective, though obviously more difficult to achieve. For what it's worth, our intent is NOT to deter anyone from getting a Byrna. I personally own three and think they are great, but they have limitations and I think this video demonstrates the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of their Max projectiles.

    Great video! Probably the best scenario based Byrna test. Byrna is incredibly underpowered at 15-25joules max. In my opinion, For less lethal to be minimally effective, you need much heavier kinetic rounds, at least double to triple the power and more precise shot placement in areas that will incapacitate or cripple the threat. Groin, hips, hands, neck, face etc…all of which takes a ton of training and practice and even then you better hope the threat doesn’t have their own training. Thanks for the education and the sacrifice.

    @GlockAZ 5 місяців тому +1

    I did find this content useful I want to add a few things and would like to see the test done a little bit differently in the future. Because I think it gives them more realistic. Going to point out a few things, the shooter was clearly trained in the military, and has been exposed to teargas before so that needs to be kept in context. Also, I think there is some advantage to the shooter that the targets are statics and brightly colored, it would be interesting to see the same thing done under safe conditions using Airsoft or simulations like an active shooter training. I have a feeling the shooter would be more challenged. If the target could move and was more dynamic nothing is 100% but if you’re not going to use a gun for obvious reasons, public area, etc. etc. I think this would definitely slow down and attacker and make it much more difficult to Make accurate shots. You’ve been with a live weapon. If you can’t make central nervous system hits and I don’t care how much you practice in a dynamic situation you’re not going to always make a CNS shot the shooter would be able to shoot you back so there’s always a chance of return fire even if you make place shots in a dynamic situation, I think this is more useful for people who are not heavily trained in firearms and most criminals I have run into are not that driven once something starts happening to them, peace out there’s always a I’ll wire to anything, but I still think this is a good product and keeps my house safe especially with the wife who is not as comfortable with firearms

    Very important! Remember, people. It's non-lethal. Hell, even guys who get shot with the real gun don't always fall on the first shot. So, this video just proves that, although Bryna is effective to some degree, it's not an end to all means. It is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Who does that? SMFH.
    Additionally, someone wrote that if the guy is on some stuff that the Bryna would be ineffective. Well that also hold true with the real gun. That has been documented time and again. So if a real gun is useless against someone whose on drugs, so is the Bryna. But, its better to have the Bryna LE than nothing at all, isn't that right? Enough said! 💯 💯👍👍👌👌

This would be harder to conceal than my EDC which is either my 380 or slim 9mm.. so that's a negative. I also wonder what this would do against a carhartt, barn jacket type of outerware... But I like the idea of shooting at walls nearby the attacker in hopes that he leaves... I think my biggest concern is something that you mentioned, and that is, if the attacker has a real gun, and immediately recognizes that you don't, I think he is going to immediately recognized that he will win the fight as long as he stays in it... Whereas, he might think twice if he hears an actual gun.. the use of non-lethal forces definitely been a topic of discussion amongst our leadership leadership team, but in the end, it is a couple volunteers that are on the front lines, and essentially up to us how we choose to protect.... Your ability to keep on keeping on has kind of persuaded me...thank you so much for this video... Most other videos just show people standing there and getting shot

It looks like the Byrna has ONLY LIMITED EFFECTIVENESS, and likely not to STOP a determined attacker. So in my view, not worth the cost, when compared to much less expensive pepper spray, dispensed in a "stream", which is more feasible inside the home and for outside mild wind conditions. In addition, something like easy access to a roll of quarters or a padlock in a sock, could be considered for "nonlethal" backup.

(Deadly force is force that can cause death or serious bodily harm) Hitting someone in the eye is serious bodily harm. That puts the defender in the legal framework as "ya shoulda just used a firearm then" For the same legal trouble it will be.

    Love this video as I'm looking at non-lethal for home. I appreciate your real-world test, so to speak. One thought, now of course you are using this for self-defense and my thought is if someone is attacking and of course, the event is happening very quickly, my thought is I'm aiming for the head with the OC pellets. Because, while I'm wanting less lethal, if myself or family is under attack, all bets will be off and headshots are fair game.. Then you have the OC balls not only striking the head but probably dispersing right in the head area.. Am I correct in my thinking? I mean after all your friend is not going to be hitting you in the head in this demonstration.. Thanks

    Would you try the test with different ammo? Such as the nylon, duke glass makers and aluminum rounds? Those all should hit harder than the kinetics used in this test

    Excellent video with real-world testing. So far, I had greater expectations for this kind of weapon, so I appreciate you providing a reality check!

    In my opinion pepper ball guns like the Byrna are better as offensive weapons like firing into a vehicle or small room to flush out or disable the opponents inside.

      Thank you! Yes, that would be a good one to do as well! I bet the Byrna rifle (M4) would stop him. Not sure we can convince him to take those shots though but one never knows. :) Nicole

    I observed that when moving to a new location, you carry the firearm with the barrel pointed upward, holding it to the side of your head with your finger off the trigger. Could you please explain the reasoning behind this technique? I've seen other methods such as pointing the firearm downrange while running or adopting the sul position.

    Thank you, sooo much. I have been wondering the same things you just demonstrated. I think I will stick to a firearms. I have had alot of different pains in my life. I believe this would royaly piss me off. I've been tased "training", CS "military", OS "Prison guard". Also sent this to Sean Hannity as he pushes this "toy" several times per show.

      Ryan and I thought for sure Brian would not be able to do it and were very surprised he could. With that being said, we still have 3 Byrnas and we feel they definitely have a place (and I'm very happy to have them)...especially when living in a country where it is illegal to have firearms. - Nicole

    Seems like a great less lethal option for people looking to not cause serious harm while also having some self defense capabilities, but not willing or able to use a firearm.
    I realize a firearm is more effective at combat. Thats why we dont send troops in with pepper spray. This is really more of a better alternative to pepper spray than it is a replacement for long rifles...

    What would a head shot with a Byrna do, that's the real question.

    Should load up the Byrna rounds in a modern electronic marker like a Dye DSR+ shooting 18 a second
