I just got a Roku Express+ and I have a very similar Yamaha AVR. Connected everything as you instructed. Now I have surround sound when using my Roku!! Before finding your video, I didn't understand what the HDMI out port was for, as I didn't install my surround sound system myself. Thanks for the knowledge.

"2023 HAS THE HIGH SPEED HDMI CABLE INCLUDED!" Myself, just looking to see how I'd hook up my receiver to my Roku Ultra. My TV is older with hdmi capabilities however not with audio, it runs from the tv sound screech‐×^*! (with a ton of treble 😩). Great video!!
    Thanks so much 🥰

Olá! Para ter 4K com Receiver antigo basta ligar somente o Cabo Ótico na TV e no Receiver, e liga o Roku na TV com cabo HDMI na saída ARC! Vai te dar um som Dolby Digital 5.1.

I’m using an older Receiver and my theater setup has taking me 15 years to get right.
My issue is i can only use an optical for my audio not hdmi.
So hdmi from the device to the back of my 90” then optical out from that device to the opt in on my receiver.
I guess i need a Roku device that supports that same setup! I need a direct optical audio option,so which Roku do i need?
This has been much harder to find than i ever thought!
    Thanks for any info!

I have a Roku thats connected directly to TV. Chromecast (older model) too. Digital optical cable (OUT) from TV to AVR (IN). So I get all my Roku content directly to TV, same with anything cast thru Chromecast. All audio is sent ti AVR as digital signal so great sound. Question: what (if any) would be the additional benefit of connecting the Roku and Chromecast to my AVR instead? Under current setup, If I only want to watch regular TV or cast something (and don't need stereo sound) it allows me to bypass the AVR (it also doesn't require two bulky HDMI cables running to/from TV to AVR). Plz help me see the added benefit.

One problem I have when going from the (Denon )receiver's ARC HDMI output to the ARC TV HDMI input is the picture is washed out, so I have to go into one of the TV's non-ARC HDMI inputs. It is a Sony Bravia TV. Not sure what the issue is.

I'll give this a try with the Roku Express my friend gave me because it only requires me to buy 2 cables. The Roku didn't "like" the HDMI3 port I hooked it up to in my Samsung 4465 TV, so we'll see if this changes anything. If not I still have 2 usable HDMI cables afterwards.

Nice video tutorial. I had hoped to see some trouble-shooting on Roku connected thru AVR when Roku needs constant restart/reboot (Roku images flash/blackout/etc.) and/or when pausing Roku for longer periods - all goes mute and Roku needs to be rebooted/eset. I contacted Roku and they said to unplug TV, for 30 secs, then replug - if not fix, then repeat with AVR; I've unplugged all, each individually and together, still requires frequent reboot (5,1,2,2 button press or unplug). It is so frustrating, sometimes even switching AVR input source (e.g. to Blue-Ray/DVD) can cause next use of Roku to require reboot (sometimes multiple 5-1-2-2 - and even then possibly unplug Roku). Don't know if you will still see this comment, as your video is 2 years old - but I am now contemplating switching from Roku Ultra to the 2022 Apple TV - and putting the Roku in my bedroom (which it direct to TV only). Doubt it matters, but I do not WiFi connect my Roku to router - I use Ethernet cable direct. If you see this, please reply comment? if this sounds like something others may encounter, perhaps a short video about this problem? Thanks, subscribing. Happy Holidays.

Wifi / Ethernet connectivity, you're right, has zero baring on what you are describing. 2nd, its our opinion, switching from Roku to Apple TV may prove equally frustrating; Apple TV can and is glitchy and periodically/often/regularly requires a power reset because internal software and or streaming Apps seem to "get confused." In our opinion we believe this to be true for both older versions of Apple TV and the 4K version. We like both Roku and Apple knowing both have functional irregularities perhaps caused by some other tech (streaming apps, ISP, router, modem, internet hiccups, etc).
In the situation you've described our opinion is two things may be occurring (1) Resolution output mismatches / glitchieness (although this may seen convoluted perhaps look into the respective resolution settings of the Roku, AVR and TV to make certain all 3 match)
      (2) your AVR is maybe momentarily not seeing an incoming input signal during a pause and the AVR snafus ?(3) this type stuff happens, even more so given you have 3 devices talking to the internet all in a string 1 then 2 then 3
This probably didn't help much, but, we feel your frustration and want you to know you are not the only one.

@@Allabouthomeelectronics Thank you for this informative reply. I am on travel (so I cannot actually further look at such settings now). However, after posting my comment I did further research. I realized I did not have the HDMI cable connected to TV in the ARC enabled HDMI port (HDMI 2 port); I changed that. When I did so, each time I turned on the system to watch, Roku would force the TV to “HDMI 1” (no cable connected), using TV remote to change the TV to HDMI 2 (connected), first Roku remote button press would force the TV to HDMI 1 port - so I could not use Roku at all. Some further digging, I found a “setting” in the Roku menus that automatically forces that (HDMI port “selection” on TV) to happen (I cannot now remember then exact name of that setting); I turned that Roku setting to “off” and now all functions perfectly (with no flashing screen, no blackout screen and no other issues) - it does, however, now force me to click the upper left Roku remote button to turn Roku on (it used to come on by itself when I turned on AVR and TV) - surprisingly, the Roku “power” button seems to do nothing, while this upper left Roku remote button DOES turn Roku on. I find this perfectly acceptable (after all, it is just a different “power” “button”), as all other issues are now resolved. However, I am aghast that Roku Support never offered any such advice, only suggesting I unplug all components, wait 30 seconds to a full minute, and re-plug them in to clear all - which I did several times to no avail. Also, since my last comment post, I did purchase the 2022 Apple TV and all new high-speed HDMI cables for all connections. I have not yet had opportunity to connect the new Apple TV, or the new cables, as they arrived just before travel departure - I will do so next week, and move the Roku Ultra to my bedroom where it will only connect direct to a TV (nothing else). I share all of this because you took the time to help, and it may be helpful to any others who stumble upon this thread. If you may have any additional thoughts, for me or those who may read this - I certainly welcome and appreciate such. Thank you again.

You originally connected your ARC capable receiver to your ARC capable TV using a non ARC HDMI port on your TV. Then, your Roku connected to your receiver HDMI port 1 ?
We are challenged to answer more complex setup questions without being able to look at the actual equipment
We thought about this question and realized something wasn’t entirely clear but all the posts make it clear to use. We like Roku & Apple TV (device) our Roku experience is more buffering than Apple on same Wifi but Apple need power cycle regularly. Roku is generally stable and apps we tested have worked reliably. This said, we will delete our other comments and hope yours remain; it’s possible all will disappear and we want to apologize in advance if that happens
