I'm not familiar with the 28-0-0 you're using but as long as you keep the application rates low, it should be ok. Check out this video on the order I like to use when applying lawn products: ua-cam.com/users/shortsdrjn9ov87nk
Yep. The front and back got the same treatment. The front and vanity seemed to like it more than the back though. The discoloration wasn't nearly as bad in the front than the back.
Thanks for the experiment and video Ron! I started using Microgreen by Green County Fertilizer which is part of their bio stimulus pack about 4 weeks ago and the color of my yard hard really popped! Next application is tomorrow along with their Humic 12 and RGS root growth stimulator. Probably the healthiest my lawn has looked in the 17 years we’ve been in this home.
That's pretty awesome Jason. How often are you planning to apply the bio stimulus pack to your lawn? Is there a recommended schedule or is it one of those (when the lawn needs it) type products?
Ron Henry I’m following a once a month program. You basically apply 3oz of each product per 1,000sq’. I apply it with an Ortho hose end sprayer. It’s a little time consuming with my 8,000 sq’ of Bermuda, but you get used to it and the results have been worth it. I also used 2 of the products as a compaction cure for my backyard as the soil had started to compact with all the rain we had this winter, and I have noticed a big improvement. Gotta love our Georgia Red Clay! I may also pick up some 16-4-8 fertilizer to push the Bermuda in the back a bit. Need to fill in some bare and thin spots.
Ron Henry I’ve never done a top dress in the 17 years we’ve been in this house. I plan to do that in the front yard, but the back yard is 6,000 sq’ and has a fairly steep hill so not necessarily worth it. I will do the front though.
Makes sense Jason. Start with the front and once you see how it looks, you’ll get hooked enough to where the back will be next! 😎 The front lawn will be the gateway.
Nicely done Ron. I would offer up a suggestion for your consideration. While product trials are useful and fun, perhaps select a designated area(s) in the lawn, rather than treating the whole thing. That way, if the experiment goes south, you won't damage the entire lawn. Food for thought.
Great point Richard. I was fairly sure there wouldn't be any permanent damage with this particular test, but you're absolutely right that it's not the best idea. :-) The first time I applied Caravan G, it was at just under less than half bag rate just to ensure I didn't nuke the turf. Thanks for providing guidance to save me from myself. Sometimes my excitement to try new things can get the better for me.😂
Great video, thanks for the info. I do have a question could you apply the granule fertilizer along with Milo even if they have the same amount of iron or one higher than the other? One more question would have been safe to do a soil test before you did the experiment to see if it needed iron or could have been too much iron already in your soul? Thanks
Thanks for the content. 2.5% granular and 5% liquid won't be 7.5%. At bag rate of Milo it comes out to .32lbs/k of iron. The liquid comes out to .026lbs/k if used at max recommended rate. They do work differently. Milo is slow release and will go to the roots versus the liquid can be more foliar and a quicker uptake.
Thanks for the clarification Tim. To your point they do release at different rates so there's probably not a period of time when where there's exactly 7.5% iron in the turf. It's quite possible that the iron levels are well above 5% though. Whatever the level, combining both products produced let's just say "interesting" results on my lawn. 😂👍
I did a iron treatment 5oz per k with lesco 12-0-0 that has 6% iron 4 weeks ago. Last week I put down a lesco 32-0-8 granular at 3/4# N per k. Lawn looks good and is the greenest lawn in the subdivision. Would it be safe to do another iron treatment today?
Hi David. As long as you're spacing the applications out, you should be fine. In this video, I literally stacked the applications 1 day apart to see what would happen. These are the results about a week later. You should be good to go. Let me know how it comes out.
Thanks David. Much appreciated. There are tons of different ways to achieve an awesome lawn. It sounds like you're well on your way to getting great results. If you have a recipe that works, stick with it.😎
I’ve heard of that dynamic w/ the lawn turning so dark that’s almost purple. Most of the time it was indeed over dosing. I myself apply FEature 6-0-0 which has 10% iron every three weeks. I apply it as a foliar app late afternoons after the sun he’s leveled out so that it doesn’t dry the product. I make sure I don’t water until at least the next day. My results have been fantastic. I however spoon feed my fertilizer (not milo). Meaning, I space out my 1# over several apps during the month instead as a full dose. That may be why your result is different. In my case, the fertilizer I use doesn’t have any significant FE so my Foliar apps control how much I’m giving it. The FEature is ideally suited to help the lawn when you’re ‘regulating’ too. I time my PGR doses with my FE dosing together so it mitigates the jolt PGR can have on the turf. Don’t forget to join THe Lawn Forum Ron...you’ll thank me for doing so.
What I'm hearing Frankie is that you're more hardcore than me.🤣 I obviously need to step my game up. I think you nailed it with my fertilizers already containing FE. Figure that both Proscape, Milo and the liquid fertilizer all contain iron. My FE applications aren't as controlled as yours are. I need to adjust my strategy.
Ron Henry haha. I don’t know about that haha. Your channel was among my earliest inspirations to get my lawn Game-Ready...so let’s give credit we’re credit is due. A side-benefit of spoon feeding is also that you’re doing something to the lawn most of the time...I myself love that part. I know for others is quite the opposite...they want to donas little as they can. If I go more than a week without some kind of maintenance step, I feel I’m messing something and missing out on getting that all-star level like you guys.
You're too kind Frankie. :-) I totally hear you about need to do "something" in the lawn every week. This season I'm going to use more liquid fert so I have a reason to get out into the yard other than only mowing.
Nice nice. Glad that the ads are helping the channel reach out more. I’m working on a video where I’ll talk about fertilization schedule and other applications in detail. I just need to shoot a few more supporting videos first. It’s coming! 😎
Last two seasons I used Milorganite and had fantastic results. This year my Home Depot stopped carrying it and Lowe’s doesn’t have it either. I’ve been using a “comparable” product but just not impressed with the results. I’m missing my Milo.
@@toddfoster975 Ace does carry it around here too. It's typically not as plentiful as at Home Depot but you might find some there. Hopefully you're able to come across some.
I agree that it definitely takes more of it to get a good result Nikola. If you have a smaller lawn, it does a pretty good job feeding and producing a deep green due to the iron. I still like Milo quite a bit. It's just expensive to apply to my lawn given the amount that it takes. I'm looking at close to 12k square feet so it costs well over $100 per application.
@@RonHenry yes, it is very expensive for how little a bag covers. Especially so once you realize that it is made from human waste from Milwaukee. It says so on the bag.
Nice video Ron. I’m not using milo this year. I can’t justify the cost after doing the math on what you actually get out of it. I’ve been spoon feeding about .5 lb per K with urea and the lawn is exploding. I’m in Woodstock mowing with a JD220 at .4”. Where are you in GA?
Thanks Westin. I really appreciate it. The JD220 is a super nice mower. I'm in the Gainesville area mowing with a Tru-Cut. My current HOC is just under half inch. I'll probably go up to .5" in a few more weeks to get better #stripeaction This season, I'm going to alternate between lebanon turf products and my liquid fertilizer. :-)
Good info!! I was about to use main stage (10% Fe) at half rate.. I applied molorginite about 10 days ago. Green is popping already (for bermuda coming out of dormancy, I live in Chesapeake VA). I might rethink my strategy..... good stuff bro, thanks!!
Sounds awesome Danny. Every lawn is a bit different so my experience might not exactly match yours. Iron seems to be one of those situations where “more isn’t necessarily better” Guess that’s why it’s considered a “micro” nutrient for the lawn instead of a major one. 🤣😎 Will be interesting to hear about your results. Keep me posted!
Agreed Bermuda Chris. Too much iron turns the grass really dark. Every lawn is slightly different though. Some people can get away with higher iron concentrations without issue.
See how I apply Milorganite here: ua-cam.com/video/YhEB1B9AkJA/v-deo.html
😎👍
I have 2% in my herbicide and 2% in my fert so it seems to be the right amount.
Nice hopperstonemason.
I did a Milo, Liquid Nitrogen and Iron combo and my grass has responded great..I'm on day 10
Nice Andre. That’s a pretty potent mix. I’m not surprised that your grass is responding positively to it.
Thank you 👍🏽
Very welcome Charlene. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 😎👍
I just put down some milo last Sunday and I have some lawn star iron coming in. Good to know, i will give it some time before I spray. Thanks.
Glad you found it useful 818southside. 👍😎
hello greetings, I would like to know if I can apply a 28-0-0 liquid fertilizer with milogarnite. Which one should I apply first? thank you
I'm not familiar with the 28-0-0 you're using but as long as you keep the application rates low, it should be ok. Check out this video on the order I like to use when applying lawn products: ua-cam.com/users/shortsdrjn9ov87nk
I literally just put down some Milo yesterday and my liquid iron came in today. Guess I’ll save it for later. 🤯
It's a good idea Marquise. In 3 weeks or so you should be able to apply the liquid iron without issue. I just wouldn't do them both at the same time.
I use both but half rate on the liquid, love the depth of green and the liquid is almost instant.
That's what I'll do next time Keith. Half the rate.
A "buttload" is strong term sir. Heavier than bag rate? Yes. But a buttload?..... Ok maybe you have a point.😎
Yep. The front and back got the same treatment. The front and vanity seemed to like it more than the back though. The discoloration wasn't nearly as bad in the front than the back.
Ron I have some water damage, how do I fix that?? Need a water damage video😂😂😂😂
What kind of water damage are we talking about? A drainage issue?
Very true Ron , I’m going to put down some liquid iron today!!
Good man! Let me know how the results are! 😎👍

Ron Henry I was gonna suggest this myself so I think r9chard makes a great point.,especially in compare/contrast testing...
Totally agree Frankie. You guys are right. :-)
Agree. With that huge backyard, I'd like to see u divide it into 1/2 or 1/3s and use different products.
