LCN, you were my intro to lawn care when I bought my first house 8yrs ago. After a bad experience with an old bag of fert the previous owner had left in the garage, probably circa 2004 vintage, burnt patches lasted months, Milo was like training wheels. Once shortages hit 3yrs ago in soCal I was forced to run the numbers. Realized Bandini (synthetic brand at HD) was much cheaper/app than Milo (only $2.40/1,000 sq ft). Weed and grasses both use N to do photosynthesis, so yes, if you neglect weed control you're essentially feeding the weeds by putting down strictly N and no broadleaf or other weed controls. The genius behind this is get the weeds under control first, then work at thickening up your existing turf grass by dethatching, aerating once per year if soil compaction is an issue, overseed early spring and mid-fall, regular irrigation for the lawn to help it fight through dormancy in the dog days of summer, and you'll build a thick turf that can outcompete the vast majority of the weed seed that finds its way to your soil. Once you've built that base, you can then much more easily spot control weed infestations with a hand sprayer, rather than having to throw down big bags of weed and feed or hose-end broadcast spraying weed control products where 90% of it lands on things that aren't weeds (thus a waste of money).

Please help me understand , I just purchased a Scotts Max green fertilizer that covers 10,000 sq ft and that's the sq footage I have on my lawn front and back combined, it has a anylisis of a 27-0-2 , it costed me $66.00 for the bag, the Milorginite bag in my big box store that covers 2,500 sq ft at $24.00 per bag and the analysis is 6-4-0 per bag so I will need to get 4 bags to cover 10,000 sq ft so that's $120 for a lot less Nitrogen? please advice!
$7.20 per 1k sq ft is outrageously over priced and people around me are paying a lot more than $17.99 a bag, it's closer to 24.99 a bag near me. I've seen it as high as 29.99 a bag. Hopefully this will open up some people's eyes! I know you're not done though..... 🤔 👊🏼
I love Milo, the only thing I dislike is the lack of K, which my lawn can really use in the hot summer months (I've used Greene County products like Air8 and RGS in conjunction with Milo to get at least a little K down on the lawn). I'm about to mix it up and throw down some Freedom Fert from Yard Mastery next week, which looks like a great analysis,
Now that you have a warehouse you could do a class once in awhile and really do a deep dive into the average homeowner. Well actually it would be the other way around lol. Talk about people getting impressed by what you do, oh boy big time. Include a tour of the warehouse and show off all the products they can buy for their lawns.
Sort of confused about the pricing. Home Depot by me is selling for $20-$25 per 32# bag. But Stein’s (garden store) is selling, what looks to be the same bag, for $8.99. Why the big difference?
Put this down before you sod on the bare dirt, 3lbs/1000. Then apply again in 2 weeks. thelawncarenut.com/collections/granular-fertilizer/products/12-12-12-starter-fertilizer-with-3-iron-and-bio-nite%E2%84%A2#
I have been experimenting at our new house with that BaHIIIIAAAAAGRRRRAAASSSS. I have been mowing often, applying 002 Microgreen and preemergent only. I do keep Malorganite on hand. I did need a small dose on all of my plants and trees to get them going as well as RGS and 002 microgreen. My plants and trees were unhappy initially. So far the bahia is doing great overall with no nitrogen or phosphorus applied after about 8 months.
I buy a 50lb bag of water soluble 46-0-0 for $22.00, humic acid, and ferrous suplhate in 25lb bags.. a bucket, dish soap, pinch of citric acid, and a strainer bag. It lasts me all season and beyond.

Milo lasts up to 10 weeks, where you getting 3 weeks? :p That's where Milo shines, you put it down half as much, which he didn't factor into the cost here. So it's like 18 dollars per app actually compared to your standard fert.
I did the math for 500sq ft, just because I like doing math. When I did it came out to be .384 lbs of N. I was curious if I did the math right. 12.8/1,000 sqft. 12.8*.5= .384 Nitrogen. Did I do the math correct? I thought that if was .76 lbs of nitrogen/1,000 sqft then when I used the same 12.8*.5 it would still give me .76 lbs of nitrogen. Thank you for any help with this.
A year ago I bought 500 pounds of ammonium sulfate at a farmer rate of 20 cents per pound. It comes literally in a 500 pound bag called a tote. This makes my app rate per 1000 come out to 71 cents, and will last years on my huge lawn.
I used to use milorganite on St Augustine but I have changed my front and back lawn to Zorro zoysia. Anyone have input on what fertilizers are best for it? I’ve been wanting to try “ Texas Best Professional turf food 19-5-9”…
I stopped used Milo a few years ago when the scarcity hit and just use whatever random fert I find in the store that's more economical. Honestly not sure I notice a difference.
Mr. Nut, I've gotta ask: What camera are you using for this video? I am looking for a video camera and the quality of your video here is EXCELLENT! Thanks in advance for sharing!
Would you use Milorganite AND Flagship in the same app, or just one or the other? If you could do a full application of both at the same time (and not burn your lawn), is there a substantial benefit to this, or should you just do one of them?
It's a question I get alot and the answer is no I would not recommend both at the same time. That would not burn the lawn but it's just overkill. Choose one or the other and see what results you get from each one independently. Keep them at least 4 weeks apart.
There's a couple of things I forgot that I did years ago that really made my lawn pop. One is to spray your lawn with cheap dish soap after you fertilize. The soap breaks the water tension in the soil so that your fertilizer will be assimilated even better. I learned that from some farmers up in Indiana. They bought soap by the 55 gallon drum for their fields when they planted. Also, I want to get a bunch of black cow and spread it out in my lawn. It's like black gold, Texas tea.
The sodium laurel (or laureth) sulphate is the ingredient most responsible for this. It is also found in liquid aerate products for lawns. It chemically loosens hard soils and promotes water (and fert) absorption into the root zone. I find this to be useful before summer drought- so the rain we do get absorbs before running off or evaporating.
It's still 14.99 to 16.99 here in Dallas-Fort.. cheaper than most and it works is all that matters. I'll stick with won me yard of the month. Funny how it was always worth it and when you get your own it's is it worth it lol
3-4 years ago, $36 of Milo would do my lawn for an entire year. I can tell my soil has improved since using it exclusively for many years. Milwaukee needs to poop faster.
I'm wondering what to do if your using a different fertilizer and it has a high nitrogen number, would you still adjust to throw down 0.75lbs or follow bag rate?
I am curious to see (and hear) how many people use milorganite on large size lawns. My lawn is 50k, that means I have to use 20 bags of the product per fertilization. Therefore, I have been sticking with inorganic fertilizer but I supplement with humic + micronutrient spraying every 6-8 wks. LCN I am curious to hear what do you suggest for large size lawns.
I have .70 acres ...i use Starter fert in late winter/early spring 18-24-12 8 to 10 bags of milorganite Middle of spring I use Scott's 3 n1 Early summer I mop up random weeds with Bayer weed n feed(spot spray) Late summer/early fall 8 more bags of milorganite and starter fert(same ratio) Aerate n seed Repeat process next year
I stopped using it after the shortage/price hike. The last two years, my lawn looks better than ever. I've stuck with Lesco products from a landscape supplier. They have bio stim stuff too that I use on the front and sides. Too $ to do the 1/2 acre out back.
@@TheLawnCareNut yup, I thought it was a bulk order only place, but they allow walk-ins to buy from open pallets. I still PreE and fert the back yard, but it doesn't get the extras and you can tell. Front and sides stay greener over winter and green up sooner, and grow faster. There are often times that I mow the front/sides and I don't need to mow the back during the mid-week mow(s).
I tried MILORGANITE for a couple years on my lawn, and other than my lawn smelling like a sewer, I didn't see any difference vs normal fertilizer. Going back to Scotts this year.
i stopped using it after i realized that’s it’s just baked and pelleted human waste from the sewer system in milwaukee. i thought it’s more ‘processed’ until one day i dissolved some in water. the next day it reeked like ‘fresh’ sewer. the higher price is yet another reason to avoid it. genius idea by milwaukee (and others) to get rid of their ever accumulating sewer waste but i refuse to store it in my lawn.
People aren’t buying it just for the N it’s a mere 6% but helps the iron delivery. They’re buying it for the boost of iron to supplement regular program and the soil benefits. Nice plug for your bootcamp though haha. We aren’t that stupid.
Honestly I like to put down milo at a higher rate One bag per 2000 sq ft which gets you a bit more iron and just under a pound of Nitrogen per 1K -so with tax you’re looking at roughly $10 per 1K sq ft. I use it a few times a year in between chemical fertilizers. Liquids are definitely cheaper but also the type/types of N and delivery matter. Spoon feeding with liquids is hard to beat as you can combine it with other bio stimulants and foliar iron. For simplicity and ease for the average homeowner a coated time release (or fast release in some cases like Spring) granular is hard to beat. It’s a crappy way to do post emergent weed control though.
I only use milorganite once. I do like the product but I don't like the phosphorus build up over time. My wife hates the smell but I just get a kick out of her saying it stinks 😂 It's the smell of success, I tell her.
Fielding a guess without being able to read the whole bag label, much of Florida has high phosphate content in the ground already. We have the largest phosphate deposits in the U.S. nitrogen and phosphorus contribute to algae blooms here due to runoff into the waterways. It’s part of why many counties have nitrogen fert bans and why many ferts have zero P and different amounts of soluble/fast release N in their Florida-specific blends (like Scotts with their greenmax 27-0-2 with 6% slow-N, and greenmax FL 33-0-2 with 21% slow-N).
if you like liquid, spray this on and let it sit, works great yardmastery.com/collections/fertilizers-liquid/products/7-0-0-greene-effect-1-gallon-1# If you want another full on fertilizer then Flagship is your ticket to dark blue green on the ProVista yardmastery.com/collections/fertilizers-granular/products/24-0-6-flagship-granular-lawn-fertilizer-with-iron#
I guess I'm lucky. My town has a farm supply store that still carries it for $9.99 / bag. I've seen it at Lowes for $15/bag. Not sure why the large price difference.
Lucky me that I live nearby Bay State Fertilizer facility which the price still is still $3.50/bag for many years. The minimum purchase needs to be 50 bags which I share with my friends.
I used to drive down and get about 20/25 bags that would last me a couple years. Was bummed at the full pallet requirement, means I'd have to rent a trailer and find storage space for that much.
Picked up some e-Corganite from Menards since the Milo was sold out. It doesn’t have the same N-P-K but at a 4-3-0 it wasn’t terrible and it’s not a fake, it’s just a clone but it’s derived from biosolids
That's only .58/1000 sq ft for $13/bag 2500sq ft coverage. Only 1.5% iron too. You'd need almost 3 bags of that for every 2 of Milorganite. It's close though but still not the same benefits.
Great video. It’s worth noting the coverage rate on the bag can be misleading because different companies will calculate that number using different application rates. If the goal is to compare across brands, it’s best to calculate the coverage using your desired application rate to ensure apples to apples.
Yes they do like to play with that app rate but that's why I also use the nitrogen per 1000 as a test. Can't hide from that with a low app rate when you're only at 4-6% N
I switched from Milo to Flagship. It's easier and cheaper to buy one bag of Flagship vs. 5-6 bags of Milo. The downside is that it's not all-natural and needs to be watered in.
@@mandytuning Flagship has a Florida version of Milorganite in it and it also has microbials. Here is a description of the product…..paying for Milorganite isn’t worth it anymore. Product Description: Yard Mastery Flagship Blend contains both immediate release and slow-release nitrogen. It's a winning combination because you get some green now and even more later without kicking the lawn in the face too hard. This is our best-selling fertilizer for a good reason: it works. Thrower down and you will see results within 6 - 7 days and the green will last up to 45 days. Flagship is loaded with an impressive 6% potassium, which is higher than most other fertilizers on the market. At Yard Mastery we see the results of thousands of soil tests and have noticed that a good percentage of these are indicating low potassium, so you will find that we formulate potassium into most of our custom blends. Potassium helps lawns in times of stress by aiding in water uptake and retention. As with all Yard Mastery blends, we have also included a nice amount of iron at 3%, which we all know is the secret to the deeper darker blue-green color of any grass type, and a smattering of other micronutrients including boron, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. All-Natural Bio-Nite™M in Every Bag! Bio-Nite is a bio-solid filler we add to every bag of Flagship Fertilizer. Bio-Nite is the same thing as Milorganite, but instead of being sourced in Milwaukee, it comes from South Florida. We can tell you that it "smells like a whole lot of success!" The good news for you is that the smell tells you that the included Bio- Nite is feeding microbes in the soil every time you apply and they love it!

I'm about to mix it up and throw down some Freedom Fert from Yard Mastery next week, which looks like a great analysis,
Remember when Milo was $12? Good old days (like 3 yrs ago). Nice math video, thanks!
Now that you have a warehouse you could do a class once in awhile and really do a deep dive into the average homeowner. Well actually it would be the other way around lol. Talk about people getting impressed by what you do, oh boy big time. Include a tour of the warehouse and show off all the products they can buy for their lawns.
Why is the rate cut in half for Florida?
they want to reduce runoff and also we have high phos already in our soils
I think I knew this, but I needed to hear it from the LCN himself! Thanks!
Sort of confused about the pricing. Home Depot by me is selling for $20-$25 per 32# bag. But Stein’s (garden store) is selling, what looks to be the same bag, for $8.99. Why the big difference?
I'm about to lay zoysia sod. What should I put down before/after for best results
Put this down before you sod on the bare dirt, 3lbs/1000. Then apply again in 2 weeks. thelawncarenut.com/collections/granular-fertilizer/products/12-12-12-starter-fertilizer-with-3-iron-and-bio-nite%E2%84%A2#
I need your help. Surfactant vs dish soap which is better when applying herbicide?
Both work fine.
Buy Bay State Fertilizer. Same process, but Boston is the source. 5% Iron 4-3-0. $3.50 per bag at the source.
Dang right I just got me some RGS in the quart size for my postage stamp front yard.
I buy a 50lb bag of water soluble 46-0-0 for $22.00, humic acid, and ferrous suplhate in 25lb bags.. a bucket, dish soap, pinch of citric acid, and a strainer bag.
It lasts me all season and beyond.
Damn that’s a massive amount of nitrogen!!! Why don’t more products come out with those numbers? I love my flagship fertilizer
I've given up on Milorganite as well. The $40 to cover a standard size yard for 3 weeks just doesn't make it cost effective any longer at $8/sq. ft.. I have been using Ironite as well and will look into the Home Depot Bandini brand. Thanks for the heads up.
Milo lasts up to 10 weeks, where you getting 3 weeks? :p That's where Milo shines, you put it down half as much, which he didn't factor into the cost here. So it's like 18 dollars per app actually compared to your standard fert.
Not at $18 a bag it's not. Maybe if they brought back 4% iron
$15-16 at ACE hardware
So what's your best description of the morganite smell?
Smells like funky blueberries to me.
Blueberries and rotting flesh.
Kinda smell like the beach
When are they going to make another version of milorganite? Seems like most cities could make this stuff
This makes my app rate per 1000 come out to 71 cents, and will last years on my huge lawn.
makes you wonder why pro lawn companies charge $60 for an app on a 5,000 sq ft lawn doesn't it?
@@TheLawnCareNut Makes you wonder why people pay it! 😉
I used to use milorganite on St Augustine but I have changed my front and back lawn to Zorro zoysia. Anyone have input on what fertilizers are best for it? I’ve been wanting to try “ Texas Best Professional turf food 19-5-9”…
I used to get milo at 12-14 a bag but inflation and demand also moved it up
we sound like old people talking about "when the good ole days were here" ha ha!
Great stuff Allyn! We're getting near pre-emergent temps up here in New England. Can't wait to get out on the lawn and start throwin' er down!
I stopped used Milo a few years ago when the scarcity hit and just use whatever random fert I find in the store that's more economical. Honestly not sure I notice a difference.
Hey Allyn, do you have a recommendation for fertilizer without phosphorus? We're not allowed to use it in Orlando.
Sunniland 24-0-11 at Lowes. Works great!
Mr. Nut, I've gotta ask: What camera are you using for this video? I am looking for a video camera and the quality of your video here is EXCELLENT! Thanks in advance for sharing!
It's just a GoPro 9 at 60fps. simple and effective.
@@TheLawnCareNut The clarity is fantastic!
GOLD!!! Thanks for the info!! God bless you and your family!
Agree on the black kow. What’s your app rate for the soap? And doesn’t it cause the granules to stick?
Dishwasher rinse aid will do the same job and is a lot more concentrated and usually about the same price as a bottle of dish liquid.
How are you spreading the black cow? Does it work if you put it in your Earthway fertilizer spreader?
Why is the rate Less in Florida?
i hope you look at Ecorganite from Menards
It's still 14.99 to 16.99 here in Dallas-Fort.. cheaper than most and it works is all that matters. I'll stick with won me yard of the month. Funny how it was always worth it and when you get your own it's is it worth it lol
IMo its too expensive, only time i buy it is if its on sale somewhere fore 6 bucks and home depot will price match
The Price match is the key for sure!
Yo Alan....what's the 90% left in da bag over by der? Lots of product but ah, dat der bag only mentions 10% of it.
it's dead microbes, literally.
@@TheLawnCareNut maybe do a video on those dead microbes too, that 90% of what we're paying for. I'm curious!
If you have another fert you are using, skip the Milo all together until the next application of fert is due.
im no expert but i mixed some liquid fish and urea 50/50 and got similar results. sprayed with the ortho.. much cheaper also
Awesome info for all the Milo folks.
I’m also curious to know! I too use 20 bags of milo per app. Would love for LCN to weigh in for those of us with larger than average lawns.
I have .70 acres ...i use
Starter fert in late winter/early spring 18-24-12
8 to 10 bags of milorganite
Middle of spring I use Scott's 3 n1
Early summer I mop up random weeds with Bayer weed n feed(spot spray)
Late summer/early fall 8 more bags of milorganite and starter fert(same ratio)
Aerate n seed
Repeat process next year
can the fert value be added to calculator on the app?
FYI Same bag is 12$ at Menards 17-18$ at blue and orange
I use to use Milo until I couldn't find it anymore in Southern California. Use to get it from my local home depot and now no one carries it near me.
I stopped using it after the shortage/price hike. The last two years, my lawn looks better than ever. I've stuck with Lesco products from a landscape supplier. They have bio stim stuff too that I use on the front and sides. Too $ to do the 1/2 acre out back.
That's awesome! Having the knowledge like this allows you to find ways to save money and still get high quality stuff. 🤘
It doesn't seem to do anything for me.
The synthetic is very noticeable.
Thanks LCN.... Yard Care Boot Camp ....Kool. Great video you Mathematician, you are the man .
In Idaho this Spring Milorganite is $20 a bag, so, outside of a few special circumstances, as a 6-4-0, no it's not worth it.
i stopped using it after i realized that’s it’s just baked and pelleted human waste from the sewer system in milwaukee. i thought it’s more ‘processed’ until one day i dissolved some in water. the next day it reeked like ‘fresh’ sewer. the higher price is yet another reason to avoid it. genius idea by milwaukee (and others) to get rid of their ever accumulating sewer waste but i refuse to store it in my lawn.
Dang, I’ve got 6 bags or so I can’t use this year. Maybe I should sell it to some locals here in Nampa
That is one of the highest I have heard about so far.
My lawn is 2,500 Sq feet so it works out for me ill be using it along with some 0-0-25 liquid
People aren’t buying it just for the N it’s a mere 6% but helps the iron delivery. They’re buying it for the boost of iron to supplement regular program and the soil benefits. Nice plug for your bootcamp though haha. We aren’t that stupid.
Thankfully it's only 12 dollars here in the upper Midwest. One hour drive to Menards and 11% back on that.
Great video! Your office space is looking good. You should do a tour video.
What setting are you using on your spreader?
It tells you on the back of every bag.
I only use milorganite once. I do like the product but I don't like the phosphorus build up over time. My wife hates the smell but I just get a kick out of her saying it stinks 😂 It's the smell of success, I tell her.
Why is the coverage area different in Florida?
Fielding a guess without being able to read the whole bag label, much of Florida has high phosphate content in the ground already. We have the largest phosphate deposits in the U.S. nitrogen and phosphorus contribute to algae blooms here due to runoff into the waterways. It’s part of why many counties have nitrogen fert bans and why many ferts have zero P and different amounts of soluble/fast release N in their Florida-specific blends (like Scotts with their greenmax 27-0-2 with 6% slow-N, and greenmax FL 33-0-2 with 21% slow-N).
Walked into Ace for something else...saw 32lb bags on sale for $9.99....couldn't leave without picking up a few. 😁
Hey Al,
What can I add to my ProVista to give it that blue tinge? I used YM starter fertilizer and it looks great five weeks after installation.
if you like liquid, spray this on and let it sit, works great yardmastery.com/collections/fertilizers-liquid/products/7-0-0-greene-effect-1-gallon-1#
If you want another full on fertilizer then Flagship is your ticket to dark blue green on the ProVista yardmastery.com/collections/fertilizers-granular/products/24-0-6-flagship-granular-lawn-fertilizer-with-iron#
where did you get your provista? I'm trying to find the seed.
From Tater Farms in Hastings, FL. There is no seed for ProVista. Just sod or plugs.
@@gpoman9988 According to their website it’s available in seed and sod. I’ll do some more digging and see what I come up with.
@ The Lawn Care Nut can confirm
I need that Toro stool. It looks great.
I guess I'm lucky. My town has a farm supply store that still carries it for $9.99 / bag. I've seen it at Lowes for $15/bag. Not sure why the large price difference.
Only place I can get it now is Ace for $17.99. Our sources of cheap Milo dried up lol
Your town supply probably? bought at prices before they increased and haven't adjusted prices yet
Great info, I've been a long time listener. I only have a 2,500 sq ft lawn... I just throw'er down and hope for the best!
BTW, it's been working good. much thanks to Allyn.
@@aliaskink I also threw down whatever I had left of my CX DIY @ 24-0-4 to make up for the lack of Nitrogen it had
I love your videos but don’t even need to watch this one. Yes, it’s worth every penny. 👍

The answer is yes. But it off season for around $9 a bag and prep for the year.
Great information bud
That’s the question I just asked…..Why use Milorganite at 6% nitrogen when you can use Flagship at 24% nitrogen??? Doesn’t make sense to me.
Milo doesn't work that way,it doesn provide a straight shot of nitrogen like synthetic, its more about feeding microbial
@@mandytuning Flagship has a Florida version of Milorganite in it and it also has microbials. Here is a description of the product…..paying for Milorganite isn’t worth it anymore.
Product Description:
Yard Mastery Flagship Blend contains both immediate
release and slow-release nitrogen. It's a winning
combination because you get some green now and
even more later without kicking the lawn in the face too
hard. This is our best-selling fertilizer for a good
reason: it works. Thrower down and you will see results
within 6 - 7 days and the green will last up to 45 days.
Flagship is loaded with an impressive 6% potassium,
which is higher than most other fertilizers on the
market. At Yard Mastery we see the results of
thousands of soil tests and have noticed that a good
percentage of these are indicating low potassium, so
you will find that we formulate potassium into most of
our custom blends. Potassium helps lawns in times of
stress by aiding in water uptake and retention.
As with all Yard Mastery blends, we have also included
a nice amount of iron at 3%, which we all know is the
secret to the deeper darker blue-green color of any
grass type, and a smattering of other micronutrients
including boron, copper, manganese, molybdenum,
and zinc.
All-Natural Bio-Nite™M in Every Bag!
Bio-Nite is a bio-solid filler we add to every bag of
Flagship Fertilizer. Bio-Nite is the same thing as
Milorganite, but instead of being sourced in Milwaukee,
it comes from South Florida. We can tell you that it
"smells like a whole lot of success!" The good news for
you is that the smell tells you that the included Bio-
Nite is feeding microbes in the soil every time you
apply and they love it!
This is the question I had for a couple of weeks now
I see the EGO Z6 is on the driveway, love to see a review of this beast.
