- Soil amendments are an important part of how to fix an ugly lawn. In this video series, we show the results of the soil test performed in the last video. Fixing the soil (soil amendments) involves applying the appropriate macronutrients and micronutrients your lawn to bring the levels to where they need to be. Alex's lawn had good pH levels so we didn't need to add lime or sulphur to to adjust it. This step is very important for renovating your ugly lawn into a golf course lawn. In part 5 of the series we discuss the results of Alex's MySoil test and then apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to improve the environment for his golf course lawn.
Because his micronutrient levels were low, we also applied Brandt Supreme Green to boost his iron and magnesium levels. Between the granular fertilizer application and the liquid micronutrient we're applying a great lawn care soil amendment package to improve the health of his soil. The granular fertilizer was applied using an Earthway spreader while the liquid micronutrient was applied with a Chapin backpack sprayer.
We chose to use the online soil testing kit from MySoil which uses an ion exchange resin to simulate plant roots. This method of nutrient uptake is much closer to what's actually happening. on your lawn vs. the traditional methods of crushing or drying a soil sample. My Soil's testing process measures what's actually available to your turf grass. This makes it a better option for soil testing. It allows you to more accurately amend any deficiencies in your soil.
By measuring the levels of nitrogen in the soil, phosphorus in the soil and potassium in the soil, you'll know exactly what type of fertilizer is the best fit for you particular lawn. You will also learn what the PH level of your soil is and will be given recommendations on whether to apply lime or sulphur to restore the proper balance. This soil test also measures the amount of micronutrients in your soil such as iron, magnesium and zinc.
Our goal is to improve his lawn over this season by implementing a serious lawn care program. We'll transform his ugly lawn to a golf course lawn. My hope is that this series will be help to any home owners wanting to do the same thing with their lawn.

Very true Dave. Great tip about the shop vac. If at all possible you want to avoid spilling fert on the lawn in the first place. The first thing a lot of people thing to do is put water on it which is just making the problem worse. That's why I always give the warning of don't refill the hopper on the lawn. Nice series to watch, have to say I am surprised though at how little, or actually not a single word, you mention the importance of regular watering is needed on a healthy lawn. Especially shortly after fertilising!
Thanks for the comment Daniel. Bermuda doesn't really need that much water. 1 - 1.5" per week is all that's required for this type of grass. We've been getting quite a bit of rain in Georgia, so there really hasn't been a lot of need to water. I'll release a video on watering in the upcoming weeks though.

This soil test for me would be the best ever! You get to hit it with just about everything 😂 were gonna see some good results especially because his pH is good... hey, Ive been micro feeding this yr after the initial app to “juice it up” with great results..I would suggest micro dosing his lawn if not you guys know what your doing. I'm pretty happy with the N-EXT Microgreene 0-0-2 product. It should correct micros with the exception of your boron and calcium and also has humic acid and kelp which never hurts. It seems pricey but 5 gallons @ 150 bucks will do about 10 apps on a lawn under 10k sq ft. There are plenty of box store options to get calcium up. Bone meal will help with calcium and your phos. There are also plenty of gysum products out there that do not raise or lower ph and add calcium. You can actually use borax (yep the stuff you add to your washer) to help with the boron. It only takes a few teaspoons per 1000 but if using a sprayer i would probably mix it with water first shake real good and strain it before adding so you don't clog your sprayer. Us lawn nuts can benefit from using the rest of the borax in the washing machine after a hard day of topdressing... LOL. ph is perfect and that can never be permanently corrected so that's great! I can't believe that everything in the soil test is lacking and yet the bermuda still looks pretty.. pretty.. pretty... goood.

Eudes, that can be fixed. A good starter fertilizer that contains phosphorus along with a micronutrient boost should get you in a good place. Here are some good options for both. Ron Henry thank you. I will get one of those tomorrow. My Nitrogen is high, the soil test recommend 0-10-0, but i cant find it nothing with that ratio
Yeah Eudes. The Phosphorus is the one that's often difficult to find because it restricted in certain states. Let me know how it works out.
Enjoying series. At the very end, I heard you say river sand. Are you going to screen that sand? Last year I used river sand on my lawn and it was a rough consistency of sand and very small pebbles/grains. I wondered if the small pebbles contributed to some hots spots. Get'em Alex. Definitely an option S. That sounds like a pretty good blend since you're also incorporating some Milo.
I'm pretty much following the same strategy. I was low across the board on NPK and micros. I'm doing 2 starter fert applications per year, the rest I'm using a 28-3-10. I'll do that for this season and next. At the star of 3rd season I'll retest to make sure I don't overshoot Phosphorus. Also apply liquid micros and Humic products.

@@RonHenryallyn hayne in one of his videos said at Trugreen they used to say starter fert fixes all problems 😆 I tend to agree. After years of throwing down Scott's nitrogen ferts when I finally threw down starter fert my lawn WOKE UP. Soil test doesn't lie. Humic seems to help with biological activity. Since supllementing with it I've never seen so many earthworms. Should help with soil uptake. I had some Indian Hawthorne bushes nearly die due to fungus. I've been treating them with fungicides and starter fert and Humic/sea kelp. They're coming back fast 😀

I really enjoyed the video, great 👍 series. I’m waiting on my soil test results as well. I’m a bit confused, I’ve read that summer isn’t the best time to put down fertilizers, as you normally don’t want to “push for growth” during summer. Could adding nutrients to the lawn now be considered pushing for growth?
Hi Mr Big Shot. I apply nitrogen throughout the entire growing season but to a lesser extent during the peak of summer. I use PGRs to limit top growth in the lawn. Adding micronutrients like iron, shouldn't adversely affect the lawn during summer months. It's the nitrogen that you need to watch. Hope this helps.
It all depends on the grass type. Warm season vs. Cool season.
Well said Jack. I think it's probably good advice for people that mow their lawns once every 2 weeks or right before the HOA sends them a letter. It's not good advice for people serious about having the best looking lawn possible. You want to feed your lawn when it's actively growing. Use PGRs to cut down on mowing frequency requirements and for better color. When your lawn is actively growing, it needs food. 👍😎

I’m sold, just subscribed, but my question is are you watering after each application? If so, how much should you?
Hi Raycpe44. We've been regularly getting rain so there hasn't been a need to water. That said, it's always a good idea to water granular fertilizers in. For micronutrient liquid fertilizers like Supreme Green, I allow them to dry on the grass leaf. As far as watering amount, half an inch should be sufficient for working the product down into the soil. thanks so much for subscribing. I really appreciate the support. A decent tip when spreading is to stop the spreader turn 90 turn it on make your steps turn off turn 90 then turn on. The inside of the turn doesnt spread as wide and cause burning spots on your turns. Now obviously this isnt the hottest fert so it shoudlnt matter, but if your using a hotter fert it definitely can burn on the turns. I know from personal experience and my bosses where really not happy that i got lazy.

Is it a must to have a reel mower to get those results? I have a zero turn that I currently use and don't see a reel mower being in my budget. Awesome content by the way.
Hi Larry. For a Bermuda, yes. Bermuda really like being cut between .5 and 1.5" Even if you can get that low with a zero turn (which I don't believe you can), the way a reel mower cuts the grass is healthier for it. It's the difference between cutting the grass with a pair of scissors vs. hacking at it with a sharp knife. All things being equal the scissors is going to do a better job cutting the grass consistently with less chance for tearing. You can pick up a pre-owned Tru Cut (like Alex's) for well under $1000. There are often great ones in the $650 - $1000 range. Thanks so much for watching the content. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

I've considered it Fred but then I'd have to deal with a transition period in the spring where the Rye is dying off and the Bermuda is coming out of dormancy. I figure easier to just deal with 1 grass type vs having them fight each other. 😎

Hi Ned G. CEC isn't measured specifically but the ion exchange resin does measure the plant's ability to absorb nutrients from the soil based on the results produced. Hope this helps.

Should I get an Flowzone or Milwaukee sprayer? I already have Milwaukee batteries. I been seeing good reviews on both but yours seems to spray well. What do you suggest?
Hi Lincoln. I've not used either of those sprayers so I can't say for sure. If you already have batteries for the Milwaukee, that's a compelling reason to use that one. That said, I only have 1 battery for my Chapin and it's been working very well so far. amzn.to/2IxJxlk I really like mine, but I wouldn't say to get rid of the one you have for this one if you're happy with it. One advantage to the Chapin is there are lots of options for booms and tips since it's a pretty common sprayer. I think it represents pretty good value for money. Hope this helps.

How many pounds per 1,000 square feet of granular fertilizer were spread here? Just got back my soil test results. I need 14-14-14 to correct my 4k sq ft of bermuda lawn. Need to get application rate right.
Hi Jerpify. Which product are you using? There should be a rate on the bag that we can use as a guide. Which spreader do you have?
Going to pickup Empro 15-15-15 and will check the application rate printed on the bag then. Will be using with my Scott's edge guard deluxe which is ubiquitous on most fertilizer products.

@@RonHenry thanks Ron. I figured it was to get that short a cut. I 'very never been that big a fan of Bermuda because growing up in Garner NC people always kept it long, 4 inches. I'm a fan now but way to late. I'm 60 and don't feel like starting over. My grass story started with me esging a neighbors side walk to get centipede plugs. My yard now, still in Garner, is centipede but is being taken over by zoysia I plugged. Just bought my first fiskars reel mower to try but I see right away I need a gas powered unit with an acre lot. Still figuring out the right cut for the zoysia. Great job on Alex's lawn and yours looks great. Keep it up.

In the third episode, you guys applied Milorganite and I'm assuming didn't improve the soil quality since the lab results showed low in the majority of the micronutrients
Hi Dioleisys. Other than iron milo doesn’t have a complete set of micronutrients. We started spraying Brandt supreme green to address the micros. Thanks for watching man.

I have a tow behind sprayer and put an entire jug in 30 gallons, and just went over it twice. So far I’ve used 2 1/2 gallons of rgs, 2 1/2 of Air8, 750 pounds of lime, 200 pounds of carbon, and the 5 gallons of rgs. I can already see the difference in my clay soil. It was a literal cow pasture when we built the house. Its been rough but its dark green and thickening up.
If you want to hear some news i nerd’d out on... I had pulled about forty 4” plugs in my lawn to help with my bare spots. I threw the old plugs away. They were bare clay so out they go. I’m filling the spot i took the plug from with sand and peat. Right now theres water in the plugs with humic floating in them. This made me excited. Lol. That means the carbon is getting into the subsurface as well, i hope.

After watching your top dressing video i i can admit i need to rent some equipment to just get it knocked out. After doing some research i can rent a walk behind loader for a single Saturday and keep it till Monday vs the whole weekend which is significantly more for just one day. Sunday is a day off here so they won’t come pick up the machine. Again, thanks for the input and thanks for the videos. They really are helping people.
