    Cute little environment. I see that you are lucky enough to have Wolffia in there. Some consider it a bain, but I love it. Someone told me a very long time ago that it is the world's smallest flowering plant. Not sure if it is true, but interesting. The flowers are tiny white and daisy-like.

      Hey thanks Andi! Yes I can see why some might be opposed to it. So far though I've experienced no negative effects in our projects. Other than blocking a bit of light from the surface.
      One thing I found fascinating is the sheer amount of life on a single bit of wolffia under the microscope. It crawls quite literally. And yes I believe you are correct about the flowers.
      Thank you! Great comment

    Those oblong type ostracods are super prolific, even compared to other ostracods and in nature when they are found. I have had them in aquariums as well as containers outside(where they manage to magically spread from one to another) and they can reach plague proportions if they have access to always available food, they seem to consume and breakdown everything super fast and out compete other species.

      I'm excited to hear from someone familiar with them! Yes they breed so rapidly. Possibly the perfect species for our projects.
      My smaller ostracods are present but far from the numbers of their elongated cousins. They originally appeared in test aquariums that were built using garden soil (composted manure) imported from Oxford Florida.
      And yes they are aggressively investigating all possible food sources. Continuously churning up the mulm layers. Burrowing and seeming to bury bits of live plants. Duckweed, Mudmidget etc. Presumably feeding on them as they decay beneath the substrate.
      I am trying to isolate and culture our smaller ostracods. But if they are out competed by a more successful species... That's something we will have to accept. We are, after all, searching for the most fit species for use in our various aquatic habitats.
      Thank you Quietlife9279 for the comment!

    I think you're right about them coming from the black cow. The first time I got any paramecium in a tank, it was a dirted aquarium. Seems like there's all kinds of life laying dormant or in some other form in any kind of dirt or animal waste.

    You are the biggest seed shrimp breeder for sure. Never seen someone who breeds seed shrimp deliberately. I always have some ostracods in some of my shrimp tanks but not like that only tiny ones. I love that tiny creatures.

      Hey ShrimpMania! Am I the Seed Shrimp guy now? Hell yeah! That's an honor I will gladly accept!
      This larger elongated type... They definitely like to breed. And they are taking well to every new tank we build. Soon we'll have to try them in a sealed ecosystem jar 🤔

      @@BucketPonds try doing some selective breeding like by size maybe that would be an awesome project

    I need to start an ostracod tank. That would be great food for my fish. Lol. I know that may be frowned upon, but it’s nature.

      Hey Clay, nothing wrong with that. I have to feed the leeches fresh... fluids too. That's just nature. And hey some ostracods can even survive being eaten/digested! Imagine that 😅

      @@BucketPonds I’d rather give my fish natural foods. I think it’s better for them. But I completely get folks that would rather not do that

    @BucketPond how much time elapse until cucumber slices are entirely devoured?

    • @BucketPonds
      @BucketPonds  2 місяці тому +3

      Takes about 2 - 3 days for this tank to consume a thick slice of cucumber. These thin slices lasted about 36 hours

    what's the substrate layer made of? Could I recreate it with soil from the avg. supermarket?

    • @BucketPonds
      @BucketPonds  2 місяці тому

      If I remember correctly the substrate in this tank is actually some rinsed sand from my backyard. With marble chunks from home depot. Any aquarium safe sand should work fine though
