My fish loving father passed away two years ago and after recently finding your channel I have also found a renewed love of fish keeping for myself! Found one of his old tanks and set it up for myself thanks to you, enjoying the heck out of watching my new ghost shrimp babes play in duckweed. Thanks more than you could imagine 💓💓💓
🙋🏾♀️Father Fish, I bought a tank, cold water fish and a whooooooole plethora of bottles of chemicals to keep the water ‘balanced’ and the fish healthy. I was also told, don’t put real plants in the fish will eat them. Buy these pretty plastic plants, and brightly coloured gravel….and I DID. At home, water changing and doing strip tests like I understood them. I didn’t. Before long the fish were belly up.😭 I went back. Same guy said. Oh here, take these 2 fish on the house. Use this ‘Aqua clear’ it will keep the ammonia away for at least 6months, only cost £7. And get a better filter £28 So i bought them 😩. Within weeks the fish were belly up. I dumped the tank outside. It filled with rainwater. Over time, I saw the most amazing creatures thriving in that murky water…for free. I watched that tank for a year. I wanted to take it to my school children but didn’t want to disturb it. How I wish I saw your channel years ago. Every word this man says is true.
3 months ago I started in this hobby knowing nothing. I bought a bunch of fish in a tank from Petco and put it all together and put the fish in and then started watching videos. Then I realized that I made a grave mistake. I checked the water parameters twice per day and continuously changed the water to make sure the ammonia wouldn't kill my fish, I threw some mud down from a local bog and some Dead leaves that had fallen off some trees and there and within a few days my ammonia was zero and nitrites were zero in nitrates were rising. I didn't learn the other way, I learned your way. Thank you so much. I just put leaves and debris that the fish can feed on and I'll feed them brine shrimp and bloodworms occasionally but you doctor fish have made this so much easier. I don't have to worry about them because they have plenty of plants and substrate to hold bacteria and places to hide and a lot of space and everything's been Rock solid stable. My water parameters have not changed and when they come back after a week vacation my fish are nibbling on things in the tank and are hungry but are still doing fine. I've been following your advice and have had great success.
I used to be that person that did weekly 80% water changes. Now, after watching n learning the natural tank method from Father Fish…I go out to my local lake n collect leaves for my tanks. It’s been over a month, I just started the hobby after not having fish since my childhood about 20 yrs ago. I followed all of Father Fish’s advice. Natural cycle, natural plants, no chemicals and all my plants and fish are doing well. No chemical cycles, no crazy water changes, and it looks clear and beautiful. One fish had amonia burns but then it was solved with more plants. Truthfully FF made keeping fish after so many years easy and quick. I put a fish in right away as suggested and truthfully they’re all doing great!
You are such a breath of fresh air. For 15 years, I struggle with my tanks, doing what the LFS's said to do, and then I found your channel. What a revelation! I have a 10 gallon tank that I set up with your method 10 months ago, and the tank is absolutely beautiful. Now, I never do water changes in this tank, and it is thriving. I set up my 29 the same way a month or two ago. I'm still waiting for the plants to "take off", like they did in the 10 gallon, but I see some signs of this happening soon. I definitely want to do the food jar thing. I also need to feed the 29 and the 10 gallon more with dried leaves. I am very happy so far. I am soon going to setup a 5 gallon nano tank with this method to see how it goes. Thanks again for all that you have done and are doing for the fish keeping community.
I have made 2 of your tanks so far. I already like them more than any other tank I have ever kept. My fish seem happier too. My daughter helped me and loved making the mud pies. Thank you!!!
Years ago I had an aquarium and what you supposedly needed to do to have one felt so unnatural that I quickly gave it up. Thanks to you I now know how to keep one in good conscience!
Omg nature in your eye balls..love it..i just came in from gathering my micro organisms from my lake there hatching all over the bay..filled up buckets..Miskitos drive me back in the house and seen your notification and watched you vid..keep pushing father fish..let’s change the hobby from buying and killing out natural biodiversity in our tanks with unnecessary chemicals..love ya.see ya soon.Ryan.O..❤
A few months ago, I set up a 15-liter aquarium with my son, just like you explain in this video, all natural with soil, plants, rocks, leaves, and driftwood. And indeed, the fish are thriving better than when they were in the aquarium we bought them from. Mother Nature is wise; thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Nature IS a fish tank, love your videos FF, just set up my tank early this month using some of your methods, haven’t done a water change and fish are doing great. If anyone says your method is not backed by science, I have proof. I tested my water through this process and it went SO much faster than when I had set up my aquariums with “bottled bacteria”. Thank you so much for the inspiration to make my little piece of nature.
Father fish is smarter than every other you tuber out there I love this man he knows what his talking about natural is really the only way to keep a fish aquarium ever since I have started doing it his way I have never had happier fish and no death
Every video that I watch I become more and more aware of how I was keeping the tank from being in a natural healthy state. I really cannot say enough about how wonderful it is to feel the satisfaction of knowing that when I reset my tank I will be doing it according to the laws of nature I cannot thank you enough
Thanks father fish. Using your methods. I have revived my aquirium hobby after failing for two years. After loaing alot of money I am finally succeeding. Im glad I came across you on youtube. ❤
Had multiple tanks over 30 years, gave up on the hobby even though I had decent success, watching these videos makes me want to tke it up again (the natural way!!!) !
My dad's kept tropical fish all my life, this is fantastic advice, I'll send this too my pops. I want a tank to replace my useless TV, it'll be much more interesting ❤
This is such a brilliant outlook on how to have a wonderful aquarium, this is one of my favourite videos, I have thought about this and followed this Father Fish philosophy and been rewarded with a fascinating aquarium I can’t take my eyes off. There is so much healthy diverse life in my tank it’s wonderful, I seem to discover new things most days, so many different micro creatures swimming about I love it!. The water is clear but full of wonderful life, I am growing baby goldfish in it at the moment, a happy accident, and I don’t even need to feed them, the aquarium is feeding them naturally. It’s such a pleasure. I am already planning my second aquarium, bigger and better, using of course some of the materials, substrate, rotten leaves, wood, water, from this aquarium. Cheers Father Fish, you have enhanced my enjoyment of this great hobby no end.
Your wisdom makes so much sense father fish, my first tank I ever did I had a heavily planted 5 gallon with a betta and snail, started out not doing water changes, plants were happy and fish was healthy. After 6 months I tried doing 20% water changes every other week due to algae my fish was way more stressed and plants looked so sad!
I am in the hobby for over 15 years. My fish in all my tanks are healthy with plants even if it's not natural. I like the modern thight scapes wich is difficult to realize on this natural way. I will start a new tank wich will be all natural tank because it do make sense what you explain. Thank you for showing me a whole new way of fishkeeping. I can't wait to start.
I really appreciate this video and FF's approach to keeping a fish tank. I naturally have adopted this type of approach. In my childhood my family kept a lot of fish...and the fish that did best were in the outdoor pond. 20 years ago my family was under the impression of keeping a very clean tank, but I observed as a child that my dad's overcleaning had killed our fish. Now that I'm older and have restarted this hobby again, I'm working with nano tanks and have found a beautiful and natural way of successfully keeping/maintaining 3 ecosystems. No fish deaths to date :)
I had an aquarium years ago. It was a successful population of fish. One by one they died over the course of several years. For maintenance of that tank I did 20% water changes about every 60 days... but it was when the tank was neglected a little bit that the convict cichlids we had started to reproduce. We got a few of them out of the tank and raised them to adults before getting them back in the original tank. Unfortunately I had to abandon it and over time the fish died of natural causes and I put the hobby to rest. It started at my parents house and I didn't have room in my apartment for a 90 gallon tank. I just purchased a 40 gallon aquarium and purchased the substrate mix from your store and I'm super excited to try a natural habitat. I'm positive that your methods are so much better for the fish. It makes so much sense that supporting all kinds of life in the aquarium allows for constant food and a stress free habitat.
Your substrate and plant method has restarted my fish hobby after many years . Having great luck so far and really enjoy the low maintenence of it all.
Very nice and helpfull video, its been 5 months since im listening and doing Father Fish method, and my fish are so happy, swimming playing, water is clear, when i feed them, frenzy begins😃 its beautifull, simple beautifull...
Thank you Father Fish. I'm trying best to take care of my shiny 5 . Enjoy your video and learned more today. I donot want them to be stressed all the time.
We have had more success in our two ponds that we basically routinely forget to even check on, than in some tanks we put work into, with active filtering and water changes. I have seen first-hand how nature keeps itself by putting my camera underwater and watching for hours. It's fascinating. It may look like there isn't any life down there from the surface, but there are hundreds of thousands of **visible** creatures living down there. It's daunting to think about the ones I can't see.
Great video. I have learned a lot from your excellent advice you have gained over 70 years of fish keeping. Please never stop making these great videos Father Fish.
OMG! I have been adding water from my old fountain for the past two weeks per Father Fish’s advice. I was afraid of dumping whatever larvae was in there but the fish went crazy and fish ate all the larvae in seconds. They were very happy indeed!
I study naturopathy and this man says everything we need to do as practitioners to fix gut issues, autoimmune diseases, hormonal disorders, basically this philosophy is the way to live in harmony and bring things back to balance
Learned so much from your channel even recommended you're channel to new customers. Going for the naturalistic route , thank you for researching an production of this video
Thanks FF! We ran our breeding business for a long time using the old methods. Not only is it inferior but also time consuming and exhausting. Now that we are coming back to the hobby for personal enjoyment, we cant wait to get started on the natural way to make the lives of what we have left the best it can be!
Gracias por la traducción al español! Es una locura lo que cuentas en tus videos todo lo contrario a lo que venden en la tiendas gracias por tu sabiduría!
Great wisdom being shared here! This basic principle should be applied to the whole of our current medical system. A balanced wholistic approach to life in general is paramount to keeping all of us fish and people healthy and living happily. ❤
Father Fish I always enjoy your videos and agree completely with your philosophy regarding a natural aquarium. So many people want complete control over their fish tank for mostly aesthetic reasons and for their own self enjoyment. Nothing wrong with this but they are keeping captive real biologic beings who have their own unspoken viewpoint. Here I am going to change the subject and suggest a video topic regarding your viewpoint on managing the plant growth in the aquarium. Obviously the aquarium can get out of control with the plants and create a jungle that hides the fish. Aquascaping properly in the beginning probably controls this somewhat but I doubt there are few experts in this area who really buy into the total natural aquarium look. Even I want to enjoy my aquarium and plan an aquarium that is both natural and somewhat controlled. Balance is only achieved sometimes with human intervention since humans are the ones who mucked things up in the first place as no-matter what we think, we are neither in control of nature nor are we Gods unto ourselves.
We can channel nature to grow in certain places and certain ways. The Amazon jungle is the best example of this. Cultural anthropologists and environmental biologists have shown that the entire Amazon was cultivated by massive populations of people.
Hey father fish, u are so awesome and I agree with u %100. The right way is mother nature. Thanks for all your videos and teaching people the right way
I do not have tank. But pond or small pool. I feed Guppy and Platy. Last middle July till middle August, my fish died. So much. Thousand fish. And I found your channel. New theory for me. But Ir works. Good. Very good. My last video, 26st August is the prove. You are right. Thank you.😊
I really like your vids my friend ..so much knowledge ..I’ve been doing things this way in my tank for a couple years now and it’s the best way ..heavily planted and my fish are thriving ..add a sponge filter and that’s about it in all my tanks ..don’t cheap out on a good light and right spectrum ..6 to 8 hours of light bout 75 percent and boom happy fish keeper ✌🏻
Father fish is like a old school preacher, teaching us why this works with facts and logic and reasoning. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned in the month I’ve been watching his stuff. Thank you again father fish for your wisdom and kindness
I have a very clear water heavy planted 75 gallon and a dark tannin heavy driftwood 40 gallon and I notice that I watch my 40 gallon far more. There’s something far more fascinating about the natural look. Though in my case I don’t need to water change either of them. I just run more filtration on the 75.
@@FatherFish is it good when in the water there is nothing, either bad like ammonia or nitrites, or good like a bit of nitrate or iron, just maybe a little too much phosphate?
Thank you Father fish for existing and sharing your knowledge of nature! Your videos are very informative and I really enjoy the natural approach to everything around keeping the water as suitable as possible to the aquatic life
Thank you for these interesting video. U think that you are right. The fish and all what live in a tank are happyer when they have a lot of leaves and plants. I try to make it more to the nature, to mother nature. Thank you.
You make a lot of great points in this video! I love fish talk I think you can have a mixed approach to this type of fish keeping! I agree with most things you say!! Not to distrust the bacteria and go for a more natural tank yes. 22 years in the hobby I’ve done all approaches to fish keeping. Very true it’s all about the bacteria! but I usually don’t clean the tank I just clean my filter floss… I’ve never really done a scrub and flush. I find as long as you establish bacteria your good to go! I really just add water and clean the pad of filter floss I put in hang on backs. I’ve never once had entire tank deaths like you may claim. In 22 years I do a water change every week on my tanks and they look same as yours. I just believe there a middle to it yes you don’t have to complete sterilize the tank but I like to stay ontop of my water changes. More about adding in new water not distributing my Bacteria. Then again I’ve never once had a entire tank die like so and I keep what you probably would call overstocked tanks that do fine they are years and years old. I do completely believe that people who drain and scrub the tank kill all there fish but there a middle ground with people like me who go more natural but change water every so often
That's great but you're still doing a lot more work than he is and not providing a reason. Hm, no water changes vs weekly water changes... 70 years of fish keeping experience vs 22 years... it's a no brainer.
Just yesterday I saw a video documenting the vast diversity of fish, reptiles, birds and amphibians in the still polluted Chicago River! Nature will always find a way to win.
I love the analogy of trying to live with nature than battling with it. I used to take care of my tanks with constant feedings and cleanings and it did feel like a constant uphill struggle. I should have just had lots of plants, fewer fish, and less food. Then I could have had an almost self sustaining ecosystem like father fish.
By following this style i have been successfully breeding native NZ shrimp in captivity hopefully i can get better numbers and colors on the next generation though
I love Al your work father fish I’ve learned so much from you and I hope my turtles are so much happier with their new tanks. I’m thinking about adding some fish into the tanks
I love your way of keeping fish, I kept an Oscar before in a dirted basin and it never got sick. The only issue I have with setting-up a tank now is I don't know where to get the gunk. The local river near my house has people dumping everything in it.
You talk so much sense FF, thank you. I love my hobby again. When I’m out in the countryside nowadays - I am paying so much more attention to all the life and balance there is out there, (and looking for food web stuff) 😊
I only scrub front of tank for viewing purposes. Never do water changes and use sand on bottom with lots of live plants. Have 4 tanks all crystal clear.
Yes everyone seems to forget about the mites cleaning our skin eating dead skincells, biofilm on your teeth, bacteria in your gut....When I first found your channel I had a little funny aha moment about needing to trust my gut, it made so much sense since it's the "second brain", the microbiome 😂🤔
I grew up with the books saying, change your water, boil everything, don't bring stuff in from nature, buy it! Pet shop owners saying medicate, medicate, medicate! Always when buying a new fish, medicate! I was going through new fish and expensive plants for a LOT of money! Eventually I got tired of it. Kept feeding but didn't do much else. Cleaned the front window pane and rinsed the filter material with cold water. And that's about it. I started adding pretty wood. Leaves..oooh a pretty plant from the lake! Etc, etc.... And you know what? The cycle of death stopped. I have fish that are almost ten years now. Who know me and come up for a little rub. 😅
I have had aquariums for almost fifty years and I am a strong believer of a natural tank. I have done zero water changes. My fish outlive there predicted life spans. (4-6 years) Natural bottom, live plants a balance of fish, shrimp, snails and the key word is balance. I keep primarily nano tanks. 6 gallon or less. One 55 gallon out in the garage that I have 5" 4 year old emerald shiners. I think my fish are very happy.
Clap Clap ............ Loved watching your videos ......... Even tho 90% of your videos are the same thing i can listen to you all day everyday ................ My fish are so happy best tank ive ever kept is a Live Tank Beautiful ecosystem
Looking sharp! Nice cut. Glad to make it into another video, I have an update to be filmed and sent in... Plants are an amazing addiction... They make the tank happier!
Great video. All stuff you've been preaching for a while, but probably your best presentation that I've seen yet. Hopefully this video reaches all the struggling fishkeepers and new comers to the hobby out there.
I've had fish 50 plus years..on and off..I've worked out what's best for me and my fish..which is a bit of everything..none of my tank are super clean..but some of my fish really enjoy a water change..I'm really into plants..they grow really fast in my tanks..I can't believe people flush out their tanks..sometimes it can take a year before a tank looks its best..
I would never be able to feed my discus like I do doing this. Yes I am not trying to note grow many types of bacteria. And its still natural. Sure it works with small fish with few feeds a day, but not overall. Still, respect the message and the messenger. Wish you well father fish.
MD fish tanks has a massive discus tank. All he does is top it off when water evaporates. He used potting soil mixed with other substrates from other tanks. Then capped it with sand. Just don’t feed your fish more than what they would find in the wild.

Thanks again for all that you have done and are doing for the fish keeping community.
preaching the understanding that we need to worry about the fish more than a tank is wisdom, thank you
I have made 2 of your tanks so far. I already like them more than any other tank I have ever kept. My fish seem happier too. My daughter helped me and loved making the mud pies. Thank you!!!
That is awesome!
I wish I had a grandpa like you. I would always listen to him. Very wise and pleasant personality. 🥰
Thank you Adnan.
I was fortunate enough to have a grandfather just like Father Fish. They would of been 2 peas in a pod
You go Ryan
That is awesome!
I have been using your method for 2 months,,,,, and I LOVE IT.....really you change this hubby from being pain to fun!
Man, i had lots of problems with my guppies and i didn't know why, but thanks to you and your videos they are thriving.
Excellent. A thriving guppy community is a source of endless fascination.
The Fish Whisperer Knows Best, Thank You Father Fish... 👍👍👍👍👍
The more I listen the more it makes sense and its making me realize, this is the very best way
Thanks father fish.
Excellent advice
@humbertovargas1211 yeah! Very happy with all this newfound knowledge. I feel much more confident caring for my fish!
I just started my journey to natural aquarium, two days ago my progress is in my channel thank you father fish for educating us.
Found your channel a week ago and I am now a loyal Father Fish follower, you’re the coolest dude!!
Welcome aboard!
Thank you, I finally understand how I should look after my fish and make them life happily
Very true! Sounds wonderful.
Terima kasih father fish atas ilmunya yang luar biasa
Diversity is a good thing everywhere, including outside our fishtanks, friend! Keep strong and congratulations!
Ive been in this hobby for years and this is the best advice ive seen yet!
Thanks to you Pops! Havent changed my tank water in 2 months . My plants are turning green now and fish are happy.
Great video. I have learned a lot from your excellent advice you have gained over 70 years of fish keeping. Please never stop making these great videos Father Fish.
OMG! I have been adding water from my old fountain for the past two weeks per Father Fish’s advice. I was afraid of dumping whatever larvae was in there but the fish went crazy and
fish ate all the larvae in seconds.
Going for the naturalistic route , thank you for researching an production of this video
father fish is so easy to listen to. great teacher!!! thank you sir
Thanks FF! We ran our breeding business for a long time using the old methods. Not only is it inferior but also time consuming and exhausting. Now that we are coming back to the hobby for personal enjoyment, we cant wait to get started on the natural way to make the lives of what we have left the best it can be!
Yes. Farming takes the joy out of the hobby. It is not reasonable to raise millions of fish in natural systems.
The only sane political ideology is the one that is forbidden.
Thanks for all your videos and teaching people the right way
I can't wait to try this. It makes so much since to do it this way. Thank you
I do not have tank.
I am so glad i started out in this hobby using your methods
Father Fish at its best. So happy to have found you. You're giving fishes a better life!
Thank you Barugon
Father fish is like a old school preacher, teaching us why this works with facts and logic and reasoning. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned in the month I’ve been watching his stuff. Thank you again father fish for your wisdom and kindness
Isn’t he just the best father anyone could ever ask for! Lots of wisdom and experience which cannot be replaced.
@@paulm0573 Technically THE father would be the best father..
And literally is a preacher also!
Keeping the water clear of nutrients is the key to never needing to change it.
@@FatherFish is it good when in the water there is nothing, either bad like ammonia or nitrites, or good like a bit of nitrate or iron, just maybe a little too much phosphate?
@@AlinefromToulouse Maybe a little!! lol
@@FatherFish I suppose it is better than too much.😄😒
Thank you Father fish for existing and sharing your knowledge of nature!
What is the purpose of weekly water changing?
That's great but you're still doing a lot more work than he is and not providing a reason. Hm, no water changes vs weekly water changes... 70 years of fish keeping experience vs 22 years... it's a no brainer.
Thank you , one of the best videos I’ve seen . This video should be the first video a new fish keeper should see .
Video so true and real thanks Father Fish
You are very welcome
I am so thankful I found your videos sir... I was doing what you said but I did a water change yesterday which killed off most of my smaller fishes.
I love your way of keeping fish, I kept an Oscar before in a dirted basin and it never got sick. The only issue I have with setting-up a tank now is I don't know where to get the gunk. The local river near my house has people dumping everything in it.
set up a pool in your back yard and grow your own.
this video is so important. I am shocked it does not have more traction. thank you for posting this!
Trying to get the right title
You talk so much sense FF, thank you. I love my hobby again. When I’m out in the countryside nowadays - I am paying so much more attention to all the life and balance there is out there, (and looking for food web stuff) 😊
I only scrub front of tank for viewing purposes. Never do water changes and use sand on bottom with lots of live plants. Have 4 tanks all crystal clear.
Does this work with goldfish?
Thank you very much sir. Your Video helped me understand what a natural ecosystem should be like. Lots of love from India…
Local fishstore owner told me F. Fish was crazy. I agree & told him I'm too...😂
Tks for one more wise video man. Keep doing it. We'll love it.
✌️😎
Yes everyone seems to forget about the mites cleaning our skin eating dead skincells, biofilm on your teeth, bacteria in your gut....When I first found your channel I had a little funny aha moment about needing to trust my gut, it made so much sense since it's the "second brain", the microbiome 😂🤔
Thankyou so much sir... for guiding in a right way about fish hobby.
Who knew?!
Hi
and how you keep water levels instide water that vibrate?
Clap Clap ............ Loved watching your videos ......... Even tho 90% of your videos are the same thing i can listen to you all day everyday ................ My fish are so happy best tank ive ever kept is a Live Tank Beautiful ecosystem
Smartest guy I know thanks father fish❤
Looking sharp! Nice cut.
Glad to make it into another video, I have an update to be filmed and sent in... Plants are an amazing addiction... They make the tank happier!
Can't wait!
Great video. All stuff you've been preaching for a while, but probably your best presentation that I've seen yet. Hopefully this video reaches all the struggling fishkeepers and new comers to the hobby out there.
I hope so!
Excellent presentation of the facts. Thanks Lou
Much appreciated Caylor!
Good stuff Lily. This is a very personal hobby and we all develop our unique skills.
Thanks father fish for your advice. I have 3 years keeping my aquarium healthy but always loose the battle .
In a natural aquarium the system constantly improves.
We love you too. Thank you father fish 💚💜🩷
Thank you sooo much I've learned a lot and soon I'll be setting up my backyard pond
I would never be able to feed my discus like I do doing this. Yes I am not trying to note grow many types of bacteria. And its still natural. Sure it works with small fish with few feeds a day, but not overall.
Still, respect the message and the messenger. Wish you well father fish.
It is easier to keep large fish with fewer feedings.
MD fish tanks has a massive discus tank. All he does is top it off when water evaporates. He used potting soil mixed with other substrates from other tanks. Then capped it with sand. Just don’t feed your fish more than what they would find in the wild.
Very helpful information, thank you 👍
