1979 is a totally different vibe, went in the more electronic direction that Billy wanted to go in after Mellon Collie. It's not my favorite sound of theirs...I live for the excruciatingly distorted heavy ass guitars juxtaposed against Billy's childlike, bratty voice. Pure magic.

Yes, Smashing Pumpkins is a great band from the 90's! Great song to start! Tonight Tonight and 1979 are in my lists. They came around in the middle of the grunge era, but I think they are more alternative rock.
Pumpkins are contemporaries of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, that whole early 90s alt rock scene. I don't know that I would call them grunge because that term is kind of contrived, but this is totally of that same era.
Grunge, Alt Rock, Art Rock... they're one of those who are delightfully difficult to pigeonhole! They are their own sound, which has evolved. Last three albums are very synth driven.
This band helped keep me alive as a teenager. Pumpkins were my favorite for so, so, so many years. I'm my opinion, their deep cuts are their best songs
Meloncholie and the Infinite sadness deserves a full listen to as well, but on his time when the "hits" have been covered. It's a great 2 disc set, but probably not a good one for a video.
The 90s were a great time to be alive for music and movies. Every generation says that, but it's true. Grunge, alternative, gangsta rap/west coast hip hop, swing revival, ska punk popularity, Fight Club, Usual Suspects, Jurassic Park, Seven, The Game...
I saw them in concert back in '96. This was my first concert. Garbage opened for them. I was 11 years old. Will never forget that experience. 1979 is my favorite song, they played in the encore. Turn 40 in a month. Cherish your time you young phucks.
'Ava Adore', which is a single from the album that followed 'Mellon Collie...' that made them very well known, thanks to MTV and a lot of radio airplay, is a little gem of a song (a bit more industrial sounding) and a very cool video.
That "YEAH!" you do right after the song finishes is the one of the most convinced, hear-for-it "yeahs" I've ever witnessed! 😂 You're gonna love these guys, man!
Siamese Dream is one of the most perfect albums ever recorded. Literally everything off that record is worth a listen. This song illustrates their chill/aggressive dynamics really well. They truly excel at both types of songs, and their discography is littered with both! They were a pretty tough band to categorize in the 90s.
If you wanne see 8:11 minutes of pure epic alternative rock perfection by the Smashing Pumpkins you should make a reaction to the live version of "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" (Great version at Brixton Academy London 1996). I highly recommend it. 👌🏽
Had a feeling by your reaction to Deftone’s vocals that you’d like Billy Corgan. Glad you enjoyed it. Been listening to “1979” since the 90’s, and it still makes me feel like a kid with my whole life ahead of me. Thanks, MöB. ❤
Hey Sweetie, 60 year old Grandma of 3 here. This is my jam. I was literally head slamming my ponytail. Most 90s hits are amazing! Love alternative! Gets out your anger.❤
The thing to know about smashing pumpkins is while they do have a very deep well of good music to listen to, managed to record one of the world's masterpiece albums. Their second studio album Siamese Dream is amazing from beginning to end. Just start with "Cherub Rock" and go forward and you will not be disappointed.
There are so many amazing songs from them. I will say that not all of their songs are like this one but they're mostly all good and alot are great, they just have a very wide range of styles and sounds, but they all have that underlying and unmistakable Smashing Pumpkins sound. You gotta start the journey through this rabbit hole and stay active in its exploration. Here are a few of the songs I suggest you react to: -1979 -Today -Tonight Tonight -Disarm -Ava Adore -Mayonnaise -Zero -Cherub Rock and many more...
1. Knew you'd be down w SP! 2. The way u say 🦋 ❤️ 3. There is no middle ground with them. It's either somber, melodic softness or unapologetic, driving hardness. 4. Yes! Jimmy Chamberlin is such an underrated drummer. A deep cut banger by them - Frail & Bedazzled, so good. Dude, you still have to hit Jane's Addiction. And for the ladies, the band Hole. Courtney Love, Cobain's wife, is a true bad ass. You gotta check out both bands!
"Bodies" and "Zero" are Smashing Pumpkins deep cuts that always gets overlooked. Based on your tastes, I think you'd absolutely love them and I HIGHLY recommend them as your next SP listen. Yes!!!! Saw them several times live in between 1996 and 2001. Fantastic every time. The album (double album) this song comes from is fantastic from start to finish. I wore out the Siamese Dream album, then came Mellon Collie. Blew my mind again. I love Machina Part 1 album also.
Commenting as a drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin is one of my favorites along with Peart, Bonham, Stewart Copeland, etc. Siamese Dream wouldn't be the masterpiece album it is without Chamberlin's jazz chops, speed, and dynamics - controlled chaos.
The name of that song speaks to the flavor of the song that you just loved! "Bullet with Butterfly Wings".....hard, fast, a d piercing yet carried on soft, fluttering, silken wings. The mental picture if the title matches the sound perfectly!
Nice! Bullet with Butterfly Wings was my introduction to Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alt rock in general. Not sure if its super representative of the Pumpkin's catalog - it's a lot heavier than some of their other stuff - but that's OK... it certainly makes an impression. 90s classic! Definitely go Cherub Rock next, then follow up with Today, 1979 and Tonight Tonight. Edit: the Genre is Alternative Rock... the Pumpkins were Grunge adjacent/contemporary, though I doubt anybody would consider them grunge itself. Their stuff got played back to back on the radio with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. (Speaking of which... any chance I can get you to check out The Offspring - Come Out and Play? PLEASE do 1979, To Forgive, Today, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight!! (Btw if you plan on doing more Metallica please react to The God That Failed if you haven't already, it's a super underrated song on the black album. But before you do just do some quick background research about the lyrics, it's about James's mother)

They didn't get famous for a couple years, but Gish still my favorite album of theirs. However, this song is terrible (comparatively) and might be most overrated ever. I was a young kid when they came out and I instantly loved them. At 19 in 2013 I got my 3rd piece to my music sleeve and it was for their song Perfect 💜

Oh yeah, Mayonnaise!
