This is by far the best video about Chia and the journey it takes you on. I relate so much to what you say in this video, especially the part on learning. That is my favorite part about Chia, hearing people say that Chia has lead them to learn things that they normally wouldn't have. I personally love Powershell and really enjoy that I get to teach people a little bit of it inadvertently through Chia. I really appreciate the shout out and I look forward to your future videos!

Awesome video, I think you summarised perfectly how a lot of us have felt during this journey! I myself discovered my farmer was lagging behind in the logs while in the client everything looked good. I made 0 XCH and switched to a dedicated farmer and 3 harvesters which fixed the problem. Now I have 110TB and made 6XCH..
Clearly Chia just started out and there are still lots of bugs or quality of life upgrades needed. Everyone just expect to roll in on this and drive a lambo tomorrow, that’s now how these thing work. Respect for speaking out of experience and not just criticising to gain popularity without doing research.

I'm subscribed to a few chia channels, yours feels so accessible to someone like me who had zero experience in computing and farming, you speak plainly and don't presume that everyone viewing will know the exact terminology that other youtubers use.
Sometimes I'm having to pause their vids just to look up what they're talking about.
This vid really speaks to me and I really hope you carry on in the same vein, as its really accessible and be learning what I can from you.
Also I think you hit the nail on the head with your last comments about the improvements needed to the gui, but also that its in its infancy still.
Your channel is excellent and its the best non hyped, plain speaking and honest chia channel im subscribed to.

Best video on chia! The lack of professionalism in the Chia app, lack of support features, unpreparedness for Pools while a company in China takes over farming pools, combined with the huge pre-farm executed by the founders is starting to make chia look like fraudulent get rich cash grab with a who cares about the suckers that are farming attitude. It has gotten to the point that I know of a small group of serious users who have started exploring looking into a class action lawsuit.

Thank you for making this video.
I thought this would be a more accessible crypto to get into, but I just don't have the resources, or expertise, to maintain this "hobby". An IT professional struggles to figure it out? Then I'm definitely in over my head. Better to invest my resources into something I might actually be able to be good at.
I was inspired by your video about making a plotting rig for under a thousand (which I got, btw), but there's just been one hassle after another. And to think that I haven't even gotten into the IT issues that you're facing. This is probably a good time for me to bow out (I can still get refunds on most of the items I purchased, so it's not all lost).
I'll still support your channel, though, you make good and interesting content. I just won't be taking a personal stake in any of these projects from here on out.

I have spent so much money on this journey and managed to cook about 400 plots a day but I have not earned a single coin. Like you I have been troubleshooting this so much. Started from scratch, redos until it all works; so I think until like you find another issue. The one thing I got from this is knowledge, how much have I learned. I'm sure the irony isn't lost on you that whilst you've solved the problem many people have - fast plotting to a good $ vs hardware expenditure, numerous other problems that have cropped up along the journey. Good luck that you start to win more consistently going forward, you certainly should do with your farm size. Keep up the great content, shout out from Bristol UK

Speaking of writing your own stuff. I too was doing the same. Brushing up / buffing up my skills in batch and even wrote something for myself in powershell for the first time. I put my chia related batch files up on github in case others were interested in using them. Feel free to check them out and see if anything in my amateur code helps with some of your uses. I'm particularly fond of the timer I wrote that says how long it took to move the plot. It took a lot of work as almost every time I thought I had it working right, something would mess up. Had no idea that 08 cannot be treated as an integer in batch so any time a plot would copy at 8am, it'd mess up the timer. Later on I even upgraded the plot moving script to support fill and spill so multiple directories could be specified to move plots to and the plot would be moved to the first one with enough space for it. Sill no grand programmer or anything, but it certainly made for some frustrating entertainment.

After watching a bunch of videos, I've come to conclusion that with the price of hardware increasing by the day, it is not worth to farm Chia as a source of passive income. I am with you "Sloth tech TV" 100%. I am happy that someone just finally speaks up. I am putting lot of effort into this random endeavour. I am an IT professional myself - nevertheless, it has been a very educational experience. I guess the Chia owners had to scale up incredibly fast with the network booming - but they should expand the team to cover the aspects you mention. Even if they can't fix the issues immediately they should produce workaround videos and technical guides on how to approach those. I was sceptical about installing swar manager wondering is it not sending my certs to some email address. You are doing an extremely good job for us Sloth and I am very grateful for the videos you produce. You are not alone there.
BTW how did you manage to calculate the right rate of queries passing through the filter?

I’ve had the same experience with Chia, mate! Thanks for sharing! In my case, the problem was this:
    1) 3 routers in a chain and my chia farmer was connected to the last one
    2) sub-optimal speed on the internet plan from the provider
    3) family members watching Netflix and other streaming stuff, and downloading things

At first I had some spare hardware to put together, and thought Chia would be fun, since I knew nothing about crypto. Then I realized I could make some money, got excited, then realized it was essentially no money. But so what? Chia has been an engaging learning environment to share with a bunch of other knowledge-hungry nerds. I've found I'm suddenly excited for every new day, the potential hardware reconfigurations, and now optimizing plotting itself with your Swar video. As with so much else, definitely about the journey. Thanks for your effort, it's well received. (PS, nice shirt, biotech FTW!)

Well said. Been building a farm for 2 weeks and yeah it's definitely not simple even as a 20 year IT Pro. I agree 100% with the premise of the value of learning. I found myself thinking the other day that this is the mental gymnasium I need to keep my skills sharp. Either that or a huge distraction from actual work ;) I really appreciate you sharing the gotchas you experienced. I have been wondering if my farmer is effectively farming. Now I have a couple metrics to look into at least. Cheers!

15+ years in various support roles within IT, I've dabbled with some interesting things I've never played with before thanks to the Chia Project, but yeah I'd love to score a couple of chia :P . I knew not to go balls to the wall dumping thousands of bucks into any rigs/equipment. I did get to play with some of my server equipment in a fashion I never was able to before.

Some of the dell server T*20 and T*10 series towers are still at pretty good prices too. For the HP SAS expander, you can run it dual linked by plugging your HBA into ports 8 and 9, but you need an HBA that supports dual linking like the LSI SAS2008 chip found in several cheap dell, HP, and IBM cards. I run a SFF-8088 to 8087 cable from my HBA to the SAS expander ports 8 and 9, this should effectively double the bandwidth between the drives and computer. I mention this because I noticed in your HBA and SAS expander video you plugged into the external 8088 port on the SAS expander.

@@SlothTechTV From one IT guy to another - I concur with everything you said here. I will remain vigilant and keep plotting/farming but if I get a reward, I get a reward. I did receive a block reward around 83 plots and thankful for it because I sold for a total of $3100 at the time. I don't plan to sell any more I get. Largely regarding learning more. I've been doing IT professionally for many years myself and still learned a thing or two in this journey lol

Only a couple min in but what you say about the journey along the way is exactly why I got into this. I've wanted to build a home server for quite some time, for any number of reasons. None of them are probably "worth it" xD . I've loved seeing what the refurbished enterprise market has to offer and it's perfect for me to have some fun, learn some things, and tinker around.

I agree; I started mining at scale since 2016, and I believe the most valuable thing I have gained over the years is a lot of knowledge in subject matter I never would have learned otherwise; starting with CPU, to GPU, to FPGA, ( which forced me to stop being Linux retarted ), to ASIC'S, to IoT mining, then to 5G mining, ( Linux again ), and now Chia; which has me learning again; I never even heard of SAS Hard Drives; and now; accidentally I have two, ( 2 ) WD 10TB Hard Drives and no SAS Controllor boards to run them; I think I might be able to put an x4 PCIe adapter in an M.2 slot to then put a SAS Controllor board in; but I am still trying to research that; I am close to pulling the trigger on buying a Dell T7910 system which as I understand has the SAS connection I need to make use of the drives; instead of trying to get adapter(s) that may not work after all.
On another note; I have 25 plots; and show 0/25 so something is wrong based on this content you just provided; so I am going to have to figure out why.
    Peace

When people say it will be a learning experience, it means you won't make money at best and you will lose money as a guarantee. The more specific points someone can give you about any subject will give you a better basis to establish a reference point for you to reach some type of objective. Do not make any goal subjective or variable and you can more accurately estimate and accomplish your goals.

As a noob trying to engage with crypto generally and Chia farming in particular, your insights have been invaluable. You have been my bridge between the unintelligible and the possible. What I mean is without your helpful insights, I would never have purchased the kit and put it together. I’m a mature (poor) PhD student, so a return on my investment is a concern, but… The main point is that decentralisation requires that people like me get on this learning curve and help shape the future. All reliable theories of learning indicate that a good tutor supports the acquisition of complex knowledge. You are such a tutor; I thank you for sharing your knowledge so freely. Yes, I do want a profit (however modest) from farming, but that’s now the secondary short term goal (I have to eat too); the bigger picture is I’m starting to see how decentralisation could pull societies into more positive directions for the benefit of all.

I don't often comment on UA-cam, but wanted to thank you for being honest and sharing. I'm frustrated as well and have been trying to make sense of the time and effort and costs I put into all this. I am surrounded by luddites that don't see the future and can not comprehend the technology and deep impact this will make fir us in the future. I like your point of view and I feel the same way. We are gaining allot of valuable experience and also getting in early on some valuable skillsets. A few of my brothers call cryptocurrency ponzi schemes, but stay quiet about the fact that I have made thousands simply dabbling in mining, trading and staking. The important part here is that you need to maintain a balance and not risk more than you can afford to loose while at the same time optimizing your efforts for gain. And yes, I'm not synching suddenly, after plotting a couple hundred plots. It is so frustrating....

Have you started fiddling with a plot manager? Plus managers make plotting more efficient after you've spent some time really fiddling. That's where you will start getting comfortable with command prompt and then you won't use the gui for chia and you get a lot more options that way. Like 'chia plots check' to see if all your plots are actually healthy or not by giving them 3p proofs and seeing how many it can solve and how fast it can solve them.

Dude, thank you for this. I had never looked at my log before because the gui showed I was synced. Come to find out I've had nothing but double spend errors for the last 2 weeks. I thought everything was working and it's been doing absolutely nothing. Now i'm able to at least try and fix it. If I hadn't seen this I would have just assumed it was working and I just hadn't won anything.

Thank you for being upfront and honest with us. From all of the following builds I’ve seen they are always running top of the line CPUs and the latest and greatest hardware. Your budget approach is actually sold me into trying out chia. This was the first time I have ever dealt with Linux. That was a good learning experience. There are plenty of videos about component selection and builds. What the Linux noobs, such as myself, could benefit from is a detailed and comprehensive software installation and configuration and hardware configuration too. Say you have a couple NVMEs that you don’t have set to raid0 for plotting, how do you set up Chia Blockchain or Plotman to utilize separate drives and separate destination drives? If you have dual CPUs, do you just view it as one large threaded CPU? I would love to see in detail how you configured you “older” Dell systems. It would help our community IMO. Thanks again for all your hard work!!
