thank you so much for your videos, so much positivity from your explanations. Despite Chia being like 700 USD low, almost zero chance to get any chia rewards, hdd prices extremly high - you make me plot more and more. lol. 500 plots and no luck. 3000 USD in HDDs alone and this gamble is like addiction. Thank you again, keep up making such great content. / started Velociraptors route - like 9h per plot, not bad for 10k drive/.

Hey can you please make a video on farming how it works !?
Do we have to keep increasing the storage every time a plot moves from temporary storage to a farming process !?
And how much time it takes to farm 1 plot...or is it ever lasting process !?
There is very little info on farming can you please explain it...

The prices have gone way up (like everything), but Fusion-IO PCIe SSDs are pretty good for plotting. I picked up a 1.2TB model for ~$120 and it has 20 PB of write endurance. The catch is it chugs power with its pile of NAND and dual FPGAs. 25 watts from PCIe slot and more if you connect its supplemental power cable. Works perfectly in Windows though.

As a side node the 1280 GB versions are just dual 640 GB flash drives (MLC), each 640 GB drive easily handles 2 plots (with a time offset). I picked up another 640 for $100 (damn price increase) so I can do 6 plots at once with my 6C/12T 8700k.

Impressed with how you research and find use in older hardware. This is the way to go! You must make a lot of money from your Amazon affiliate links, since every time I click on one of the links they are sold out!
Regarding raid 0, since ssd and nmve drives are super fast and have literary no access time, there is no real use of doing raid on them. But for mechanical drives, surely a raid 0 setup (that stripes data over the drives) would make them (much?) faster than single drives?

I have a 5950x, 32GB 3600 RAM, one 3,8 TB SDD and some external HDD (and the Asus prime x570-pro). I'm doing around 16 plots per day...
The problem is that I can't use the full ssd storage, because it gets way too slow. If I try to add more, id should work in theory, but I find my system crashed the next day. It never uses more than 80% RAM when I check, but if I add more (because of more plots for instance) something doesn't work right.
Now I have great potential, but if I buy now just the nvme I need (970 1 TB * 4), I will be bankrupt lol. It would be more expensive than your recommendations. So what should I do from here on?

Yes, it would be extremely helpful.
I've been using my old Dell t7910 2x e5-2680 v3 24 cores/48 threads, 128gb ram, 2tb SSD and 9x SAS drives. It can easily run 16 plots (7 on SSD, 9 on individual drives) at once but doing that many slows the total time from 11 hours to 19 hours so I'm still under 2TiB/day.

Would be ideal if you could make a video what would be the ideal setups for long term chia storing. Like small pc with low power consumption with multiple internal USB hubs + External 7-16 USB Hubs to USB drives each with its own 12V PSU (provided in the box), vs Server with lots of PCIe with HBA + Xpanders (that allow stagger power up the hdds).

@slothtechtv, Great video. You mention the PSU to Sata cables, were you saying not to use two strings of cables on a psu or not to daisy chain one string to another string and then to psu? Or were you also saying not to use two strings of sata connectors on a psu even if on different psu connections. I see why not to daisy chain because the full power amount won’t hit all drives on the chain. I did notice in my past years not to use all four splits on my drives, did not work so well, at times one of my drives would disappear. If I stayed with three drives then none of my drives disappeared. Have you had similar problem with four drives on one string?

I can personally tell you that RAID0ing two 2TB NVME m.2 SSD drives greatly enhanced my performance. I went from plotting 18 a day to 25 a day. I raided them with ubuntu linux mdadm. I will say since you're making 2 drives 1 this makes 1 job in swar instead of 2 jobs with 2 ssds. I think this also greatly enhanced the performance so it would not kick off two jobs at once so there was a better stagger as well. But if there's a way to stagger two jobs so they don't kick off at the same time that would be a good test to see if it was solely the RAID0

This is something i startet thinking about also.. I dont plan on just expanding for ever, i have a limit. So buying expensive parts for plotting fast just isnt any point for me.
Cause what should i do with the expensife equipment when i have filled my space? Then there is no use for it. I thought of getting a good pc and some nvme's, but not anymore.

I have a server 2 x LSI SAS9308-8e, 1 x SAS9308-8i all 12Gb/s . The external SAS9308 cards connect to my HDD storage via a SFF-8644 to SFF-8088 cable . The HDD storage uses SFF-8088 to SFF-8087 2 port adaptor cards, then a SAS SFF 8087 to 4 SATA 7Pin breakout cable to each HDD. This method allows for the HDD storage to be further away from the server and eliminates cables running through the slots to connect directly to the HDD's and for maintenance you only need to unplug the Sff-8088 and not unplug the cable from every HDD . This is a more costly method, but I think it's safer to protect my HDD's.

I want to ask, what happens when while plotting, power or internet disconnects and when to do after that?

    • @Alpejohn
      @Alpejohn 3 роки тому +2

I dont think its a problem that the internet disconnects, as i had some internet problems a few days ago, not sure if it affected my farming computer tho.
But powerloss will destroy the plots you are making, even just exiting the chia software will destroy the ongoing plots.
If you live in a area with very unstable power (brownouts or waht its called, flashing lights etc) i would get a UPS to help prevent the pc from turning off.
But just remember that a UPS also uses some extra power, to take that into calculations if consuption is key. :-)

Local companies likely wouldn't want to do that directly to you. They likely go through recycling companies or they lease the servers and let the lenders take it back, and the lenders have large contracts to sell them used elsewhere (i.e. China, where they desoldered the chips from server board and make new xeon MB with them). I'm going to combine 6 WD Black HDDs (220 MB/s write speed each) in RAID 0. Will it be good enough for plotting? (I'm hoping 70-80% compared to NVMe SSD's speed) I'm thinking about this because in my country it's pretty hard to get a SAS HDD, but I still want the longevity of HDDs, I don't want to burn out SSDs over time.

New sub, ( liked & subcribed ), thanks for the no nonsense, crystal clear & actionable content.
Question: Any thoughts on using WD 10TB Purple drives?
Supposed to be good for 24/7 operation of writing large files, otherwise I do not see much differnce between white, red or most other color labels.
I just used spare parts I keep on hand for my gpu rigs; which is actually a quite large surplus of shelf stock to avoid single points of failure.
At any rate, I used and old heavy metal monster of a cool master case that will take up to 10x 3.5" drives, slapped a i7-7700k in a Z270P mobo, 32gb of 3200 speed ram, wd blue 250gb ssd for OS only, wd blue 1TB ssd for plotting, and WD 10 TB red for "Final Destination" ... I have 3x more WD 10TB on the way because they keep bumping the price(s), just wanted to do the hands on testing so I run what I brought; no problems so far; only upto 24 plots for now; it's a process .. lol.
Found these 2 core duo systems when I search for T5810 for $139.00 bucks, doesn't sound right; that could just be me ..
I am Interested in the Dells mentioned in your vid; you have to keep an eye on them; they do some tricky things; use to work for them out of Nashville.

@@ericfresh okay, I now have my homework assignment ..
.. Not familar with those two acronyms; but I will see if I can sort it out.
So far, I only have 20 plots; and only learned that 4TB and lower have a high failure rate; and how to shuck external drives.
I figure we might have a pool by the time I get a batch of WD 10TB drives in; if not, I ran a P2P pool a few years back, and just recently built a small stratum server.
but based on just Reading the FAQ, the Chia team seems willing to help with the complex parts of the code; I may contact them, been in it deep trying to help Tellor, (TRB), get a public pool backup since the previous op went another direction and now there is only non listed private pools; but still wading through the smart contract code.
I once had a very bad experience with a Seagate Drive; so I stick with WD; ( and a few XPG M.2 drives ), and haven't had any issues since.

You can absolutely move your plots while the program is open, just make sure that the location you are moving to has been added to the program - you can do this in the top right of the farming screen. You may then get a message in the program stating that you have an invalid plot in the old location, you can ignore these messages and they will disappear next time you're able to reopen the program.

@@SlothTechTV NVME drives have high enough throughput that doesn't need RAID, but RAID reduces each read write size and increase the number of IOPS vs splitting multiple workload to 2 separate drive for 1/2 the amount of IOPS vs RAID. So yes it actually would be worse to raid an SSD. The best way is to split up the workload to individual drives instead. Mechanical HDD has lower sequential bandwidth so raiding them make sense, but you still have the mechanical latency on seeking. I still think if you have enough bandwidth for at least 1 workload thread you should avoid raid and just split workload to different drives instead.

Hi. I've actually tried to replicate the SAS plotting machine you have with what was available in my local market. I've ended up in Chinese motherboard on C612 chipset(Huananzhi x99-F8) with a single 2680v3(12 cores, 3.3Ghz), 64Gb DDR4 RAM and 16 SAS 10k drives plugged into two HP H220 SAS 9205-8I(pci-e 8x 3.0, 2 ports 8087). And the main problem I got is that single plot on one HDD is produced in 9 hours, 4 plots with 1h stagger on 4 different HDDs is done 13h per each and with 16 HDD and 16 plots in parallel time grows to 28 hours. At this setup CPU is loaded at 40% max and HDDs are almost idle. Have you seen such behavior on your system? Does paralleling plots on different drives decrease performance for you?

    AMD RYZEN THREADRIPPER 3990X

    V-GEN SSD NVME 2TB X 4 PCS = 8TB
    DDR4 V-GEN RAM 32GB X 4 PCS = 128 TB
I've been plotting 25 plots parallel, but I haven't been able to get 81 plots / day.
until now my average plotting speed is only around 100 minutes / plot.
do you think something is wrong with my computer ?
is there anything else i should do ?
Is it mandatory to use a plot manager ?
