    This is exactly what I need. I didn't realise I was cutting in and off balance until I videoed my throws. Wide knees. Good cue.

    the shot of Anthony Washington at the 5.05 mark, was taken by my son and I at the campus track of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in May of 1999. we took in that meet, talked to all the guys throwing, son 2 weeks later won the Illinois State T&F championship with new state record-class A- of 184-3.

    The "pizza slice" sweep method set us behind a season. Thank you for making these videos.

      Big PRs and 1st place finishes at the meet in our program the past two weeks. Big increases of 20 feet because of the wide sweep instead of the "jump" across the circle.

      @@aretethrowsnation In 2019, one of my throwers placed 2nd at state in the discus for the first time ever in our school history. We also had 4 throwers qualify for state in the same year, which has never happened before. After that, I was sold on the TCR system. My son and I attended the Iowa summer camp in 2019 and it has really made a huge difference in understanding the rotational throws. Thanks for all you do!

    Do you have any quick tip videos on how to drill this stance properly? Also do you have any suggestions on how to improve hip flexibility? I feel most my athletes struggle with week or locked hip movement which prevents them from getting their right leg out long, then the chain is broken because they can't hit the middle with continuous movement

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому

      Donnie Harn by stance do you mean the start. Often hip flexibility is a byproduct of posture inefficiency. We cover this type of info in depth in our alpha Coach membership program. Both courses total around 17 hours of info. We'll see what we can put up soon. Thanks for watching and commenting

      I do mean the start, getting the right leg long and sweeping through is difficult for many of them. I also think there is some strength issues with their left causing them to sweep to early preventing from keeping their knees apart

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому

      Donnie Harn I our system the efficiency of pillar 1 and pillar 2 will set up speed and balance around the left. If they can't sweep wide, they are likely off balance. And if that's the case it's almost impossible to have a wide sweep leg. But strength will play a role in that for sure.

      what we find here-concerning your problem- is that those athletes having trouble are not extending the sweep leg. rather they bend the knee to where the ankle is behind the knee, much like a ballerina. when they do that, they basically pirohette , not sweeping long....get that sweep leg extended, and it falls into place

    Are throwing shoes important?
    I do the sweep and use some running shoes (nike trifusion run) yet I still stop and the motion isn't very fluid.
    I've tried standing up straight, leaning like they do in olympic throws, the kick, sweeping, and just jumping into the standing throw.

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому

      Trainer max throwing shoes are critical. There are additional variables that will affect the ability to rotate in the middle. A proper sweep help that immeasurably. But rotation in the middle is what we refer to as axis transition. (Pillar 4) And that has to do with the alignment of the center of mass and the drive leg (single support). If the alignment is correct rotation becomes fast and easy. If kid aligned. Rotation will be difficult and will stop.

    • @trainermax2259
      @trainermax2259 7 років тому

      Understood. Will try to find a pair soon then. (barely any places sell throwing shoes)
      I understand the sweep helping as when you land you are on the ball of your foot and not heel plus you keep the spin rotation. My coach names the rotation in the middle part the 3-5 phase.
      When sweeping does the right foot need to be bent? Is leaning required (what olympic athletes do when they throw), and does turning happen in the air or once the ball of the foot hits the ground?

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому +1

      Trainer max typically turning in the air is much faster. And the lean is required but it's a loading of the left leg axis pillar 2-3. The more dynamic the load, the more bigger appearance of lean. It's what get better and better over time. . And btw Is your coach using the TCR™ system? sounds like it.

    • @trainermax2259
      @trainermax2259 7 років тому +2

      I have no idea if my coach is using the TCR system, however during one practice I did see a female wearing an Arete Throws Nation shirt.
      He teaches us 4-5 (standing) 3-5 (half turn throw), 1-5 is full turn, we don't use 6 pillars (?)
      really great coach although.
      Do you have videos up where you describe each pillar in depth? because im not sure what left leg axis pillar 2-3 means. I understand loading means putting all weight on left leg.

    The throwers you show in this video are mostly non reverse throwers. They have an entirely different technique than reverse throwers. Having a wide leg encourages your right foot to be higher above the ring wasting time. I agree with hopping being bad but speed across the circle is generated by having your feet close to the ring. Wide leg with your foot close is much better. Swinging them out and high is a wasted motion and time.

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому +1

      Tim Shot I would argue that malachowski and harting have the same technique. Reverse vs non reverse. Vesteinn Hafsteinsson did a comparison and showed they are they same. Style and mechanics are often confused. The right foot is only high at the back and comes down low as u go to the middle. I would disagree with what ur saying. I do show Anthony washington. And his knees are very wide at the start. It's the door handle vs the hinge. the longer path will create more speed and power. The proximity of the sweep to the ground and height of the knee is a differ technical point and phase . Point here is to help coaches and thrower avoid teaching something bad. And non reverse throwers vs reversing throwers are only different at delivery, but only slightly. Core sequence is very much still the same. Thanks for your feedback.

      In general it boils down to physics principals vrs body types. A large man, say 6' 8" tall, would use a different technique than a smaller person. There will be some mistakes his wingspan would hide better because of his natural leverage. I believe we agree more than we disagree. We are trying to gain angular momentum or transferring speed across the circle to the implement in the end. Keeping your feet on the ground at release is a must to be able to finish the throw, especially in the shot. While I see some larger throwers throwing the disc get away with being in the air, you just won't get away with it in the shot and hit your maximum potential. The two basic physics principals, as I see it, are height of release or the implement in the air height and speed of release. You get height differently in the disc vrs the shot because the disc is more aerodynamic like an airplane wing and the shot, being somewhat aerodynamic, is just plain heavy vrs the disc. To me looking at Christopher Harting's technique vrs. Piotr's it is much the same out of the back, I agree, but Harting throws off both feet where Piotr throws with the left foot in the air. Small but critical difference making it necessary for him to reverse to stay in. I do like your videos and appreciate the effort and time you take to educate us and make us think - Thanks Tim

    • @aretethrowsnation
      @aretethrowsnation  7 років тому +1

      Tim Shot yes I agree that we mostly agree. Lol. But if still argue. That the technique isn't different for a 6'4 vs 6'8" thrower. Look at Robert harting vs christoph, they throw very much the same. There will be differences in the bio mechanical angles and kinematic due to the differences in height. I'd certainly agree that staying on the ground, weather reverse or non is critical and a huge must in the shot for sure. more time on the ground will mean more force applied to the implement and better acceleration at delivery. . Thanks for taking the time. And hope you are coaching somewhere. We need knowledgeable people out there developing talent. Best. Coach.
