@@flexking4800 have you watched the very last bit where the man says that the wind wasn't that strong that day? AS well, as far as I know, the previous world record for discus throw was set in similar conditions.
@@tomasbajarunas6416 Not just about strength of wind. It's clear conditions were very favourable - look at Perez's huge throw. To think this man is only in his extremely early 20’s, have a reaction as if this throw was bad, and also got the world record?! This man is going places, if anything, he’s already there.
I think it's because he knows that when he's really connected, he's thrown 71m on a typical day and that WR throw probably came out more like a 68-69m throw.
Awesome! The frightening thing is there is room for improvement. I keep wondering what will happen if he keeps that left foot down as he throws for a few more milliseconds...😮
Fantastic to see this very old record broken and that's despite Mykolas blocking his hips on every throw. If he can put the left foot down on a slight diagonal from where the right lands in the centre of the circle to open up his hips up on delivery, he could add at least a couple of metres to the record.

I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about this record being ratified. I think it calls into question just how ergogenic wind can be at times, and that the notion of "wind-chasing" could potentially warrant a revisit to the aerodynamics of how the discus works in high winds (why there has never been a rule set in stone confuses me to this day tbh). 9/10 from the top 10 men in this competition PR'd, and 7/10 from the top 10 women PR'd as well; almost all of which were like 4-5% or higher. That's not just a meet where things like atmosphere and "hype" can be a reason; these are statistical anomalies that were the direct result of some sort of nature-related aid to the point where it artificially created higher marks.
This is how the previous world record was set. Mac Wilkins had 3 world records on a windy day. Many throws have happened in the last 30 years in windy conditions. This is the only one that went 74m.

There are no rules regarding wind speeds in discus. Also, contrary to popular belief, a tailwind actually decreases distances, as it just bats the disc down. The most advantageous wind for a discus thrower is a diagonal headwind coming from the same direction as their dominant hand
What a great throw! Good heavens, he got it out there! It worried me when ring judge waited to clear 4-5 seconds after looking away... Mykolas got out of the ring in a hurry, pretty sure he stepped out right as the discus hit the ground from what I could see at the back angle at 11:45, I didn't even notice until the side shot 12:08 , but yeah, I've seen people DQ'd for the same thing; and for the record I though it was stupid call then too, but he was obviously in control but backwards and quickly will bother some judges. It is *2024* where a swimmer set a NCAA record and was literally DQ'd for celebrating with a teammate after a race was over, but not everyone had touched the wall... the world is chalk full of Karens and rules lawyers; and technicalities are bureaucrats playground.
The point of that rule is so that they are in control at the end of the throw. No experienced official would consider Alekna's behavior a foul. He threw the throw, stopped, then exited the ring. The idea behind the rule is more important than the rule itself since its literally the reason behind the rule.
I don't think he stepped on the edge. So what do the rules say? Do they say that the heel of the pivot foot can not go over the edge even if not stepping on the edge?
@@ThrowsUniversity Formally, the referee approved the throw. However, I know how judges can be extreme, even malicious, in such cases. We often smeared the edges of the rim with chalk.
