The Car Wizards has the coolest walk on UA-cam! I'd love to see a continuous loop video of him just walking around. Maybe if this post gets enough thumbs up The Car Wizards will make such a video!
This is my first visit to this channel and I saw the 308GTB and automatically said yes please. I watched at least half of the video before I noticed that he just casually has a Jaguar XJ-220 in the bay next door. Judging by the stuff I saw in the intro I think it’s a subscribe for sure for me!
I used a very thin Kenwood Bluetooth radio in my 79 mustang. The main reason is weight, old radios had support structures behind the dash and most of these single din aftermarket radios tend to only rely on the strength of the 40yr old dash plastic.
When you are getting close to carburetor balance try listening to the intake air with a thin hose (sprinkler hose is good). Then you will be able to get it perfect. The gauge is not nearly as “fine calibrated” as your ears.
Ian Tyrrell's Classic Workshop channel- he tunes Lamborghini 12 cylinder carbs exactly that way. Fascinating to watch and listen to him working on carbs the way you describe.
He has a long way to go before it's even close. Made me cringe. Yes the old faithful method used by Iain Tyrrell is the way to do it properly, thats how I learned to do it on Aston Martin Triple SUs and Webers, E types, Lotus twin cams and Alfa Romeo etc back in the day, but that one sounds like there are other issues with the carbs anyway. Idle circuit and float levels for a start. Reving it up like that to make it sound good was hilarious. Especially when he said afterwards that it needed to be warmed up first.
Your video and the detailed one from Lou Trottier in Canada should be all anyone should need to get your 308 fix on and together show you how to enjoy your new Ferrari. I think this is the reasonable Ferrari to purchase and won't leave you beside the road in Lamborghini land with unreasonableness of repairs and maintenance. Two very lucky people.
Exotics have a pleasing and distinctive sound all of their own and I appreciate them for their beauty and performance but my favorite will always be classic American muscle with that bassy "WHOMP" on start up that can set car alarms off and a full throaty idling "BLUB, BLUB, BLUB".
Driving through my little town, Winder Ga, my son and I saw a 308 parked in front of a bar n grill tonight. 👍 First time seeing one in person. He was very excited.
I'm so glad this car went to the wizard, someone that truly bring it back to its former glory and make it look so easy at the same time, can't wait to see more progress
Having Dual named as a cheap brand makes me sad, as when I was growing up it was a high-quality German audio brand. Same with Nakamichi. A Chinese company buys up the rights to a name and rides on its legacy while crapping on it.
Those air filters I'd use the bases of, since they fit the carbs. Then fabricate a housing over them, tie them together off to a location were they could pick up fresh air and connect to a K&N filter of your choice which fits it's location. Fiberglass construction of course. For me a job like that would be fun and easy. But everyone's fiberglass skills are different.
8:34 if I’m remembering correctly from Bad Obsession Motorsport’s Project Binky, Pioneer made them a custom remote mount head unit for their stereo. I would imagine that the cost of this combined with finding a new location for the head unit would make this not worth it, but it does exist as an option.
The thing is: you only need a cellphone with a headphone jack. You can mount an amp anywhere and all you need on the dashboard is a place to clip your phone.
@@muskokamike127 that too, just thinking of a solution that looks like a normal aftermarket radio. Edit: you don’t even need that, just a Bluetooth receiver and amp. No visible audio controls needed (similar to the 2020-present Morgan Plus-Four)
@@charlespletzke8311 Yeah the blu tooth would be "slick" but if you want cheap and cheerful an on off switch and a headphone plug running to the amp would suffice. The factory radio died in my F150 and even at the wreckers they wanted $120 for one so I was thinking of that....but ended up buying a JVC double din for $69 with $12 for the adapter plug so I threw that in instead. The cheapest "decent" amp I could find was over $100.00.
That center console (if you can’t find one): Why not recover that piece with some material close in color. Before putting the material over the piece, fiberglass the holes up.

I used to have a Triumph GT6 with dual carbs. Had a plate with red ball in tube. Red ball with move up with more Velocity. Found it easier to put head between carbs and listen for Harmony resisiom
Great update. Car is coming along nicely. Great work piecing the interior back together. The placement of the relays and control unit for the ignition looks awful. The factory placed the ignition modules on my 308Gtsi in the drivers side end, floor, of that compartment. And covered it up. Suggest you do that.
I dont know of the air cleaner, but third option, perhaps can contact somebody to make a heatshield for the existing air filters. Custom aluminium airbox?
Carbs are not sink. I have used balance sticks for my Weber’s. You are close let car warn up not from idling, but drive for about 20 minutes. I always made small adjustments and then take for another drive. I balance Alfa or Fiat’s and then road race on the weekends. I rebuild the carbs and did the heads after every fourth race. I am not a fan of the electrical connections, I prefer bullet types, less fire chance. Nice daily driver.
As far as the seats go I could tell you that it most likely used Recaros so just find some old ones like the Specialist or SEs for it, but I warn they are not sized for let's say Bigger people. Maybe they were Corbeau seats because they still make a classic lineup too that are very similar to the originals.
For the air cleaner go to a catering supplies place and get two large aluminium or stainless baking trays or terrines and cut the holes for the carbys in one and use the other as a lid. Seen that done many times to great effect,
@@JesusisJesus I got no problems with the stereo I used them until I found they make a Chinese stereo that has a built in phone holder, I paid $20 for one a few years ago the price has gone up since if you can find them, still super short for small spaces too, worth it for me.
I agree with Scott. Carefully remove the existing ¿leather?, so you can use it as a template to shape the new leather, glue it to the top of the panel, cut the holes you do want from the bottom and then finish gluing the edges.
@@SavedbyHim the carbs are way off on the idle circuits for a start. Far from balanced. Easy to Rev it up to make it sound ok but it's not under a load.
Great to hear it run properly ! I totally agree on the original air box being the better option. Cone type filters definitely just suck in warm air and don’t have a volume of calm air around like a box. This is why Ferrari put a box on it in the first place 👍🏻
Could you fabricate an air intake scoop out of aluminum possibly, and integrate the weber filters into the custom scoop? Or adapt another scoop that is about the correct size?
Hi David, I think you could fab up an air cleaner or modify one from a 560sel (big oval) that would let the engine breathe cool air from the inlet on the right side. That way you could use a readily available air filter.
I'm sorry but I don't find that engine sounds nice at all, it reminds me of a small 2 stroke boat outboard engine at idle. I know it's a classic but that engine sound doesn't inspire me at all
Carbs are still way off and has the wrong exhaust. I cringed when I heard it, even more so when he was reving it up. Especially when he said it still needs more tuning and warming up first!
I bet you could fabricate a good air cleaner - bottom plate, sides, intake trunking, top, a circumferential standard element,- weld it together, spend maybe $100 plus a days work, and it makes a good video too! All the best from Britain.
Try swedish Ferrita, they make stainless exhausts and often low series or pure custom systems, maybe they already have some in stock? I remember they changing the mufflers on a car much like that one, it had valves that opened all end pipes at a certain rev. But they made one with all open all the time. I don't know how that effected the engines fuelconsumtion nore soundregulations here in Sweden, but I think they had a UA-cam video about that project.
I've never been hard on you before Wiz but I gotta be this time. The name of the game is to have the noise from that wonderful Ferrari V8 to listen to instead of a radio. Of course, with the Beetle sound of that engine, maybe a good radio is the way to go.
Perhaps delete/junk the heater cores, boxes, lines, etc and opt for one of those simple universal electric heaters, since you already have the dash off and have access to the loom and the air vent pipes? They not only tidy up the engine bay, but you get instant heat and you can still have it controlled by the original switch gear. I'm putting one in my car just to make engine bay look all show spec at the bulkhead (the electric units mount on the inside of the bulkhead).
The 308 is alive! Alright now let's throw on a set of twin turbos and blow it up, then do a LS Swap. No I'm not serious. But that's how most Car UA-camrs would do it.
well truthfully this car would need it to perform better than a modern Toyota..and if done right...it wouldn't decrease the value of this $20k Ferrari..in my opinion...especially if i owned it and had money falling out my butt

@@jjmac3561Agreed re the carbs. Have done both... The AFM gets you close at the first pass. Then the piece of pipe. I also check using an infrared gun on the exhaust manifolds when hot. Quite effective for detecting minor mixture variations or a not-so-good plug.
The sound just doesn't come through the Mic, it sounds like a Beetle. Beautiful job guys. I love this build and I bet in person it sounds amazing.
weber downdrafts are commonly used on VWs so thats probably why you relate the two
@@dsruddell Proper airbox would get rid of the gulping sound so common with open Webers. Not a good sound for my taste.
I've actually have heard dune buggy's (vw) sound better with the straight up pipe...10x better in fact
Yep I was underwhelmed when the engine was fired up and thought 'Is it meant to sound like that?'
I have a 308 and a 74 beetle. They sound pretty similar irl too 😂
Hello Wizard I watched your movie of the Ferrari, also regarding the wiring harness behind the radio.
Tip, loosen the ground wires there and make it stainless. You may get transition resistance there, it is near the fuse box!
Good luck, nice Ferrari!
Regards,
Willem
It still sounds a bit flat to me and the throttle response should be quicker. Free flowing exhaust and a jet kit should make a big difference.
I really love your videos regarding the 308. I realized why I got rid of mine. Repair and maintenance and transmission. Mrs. Wizard will keep you around just to keep it running. Good luck and have fun.
Be nice to get Tavarish to give it a test run when it's finished. He drove it in Car Trek and complained the whole time. His comments after its rebuild would be interesting.
It is Wizard's car now. I doubt anyone other than Mr. and Mrs. Wizard will drive it while they own it.
No they wouldn't.
This is the 1st video I’ve watched on Wizard’s 308. For such an old and basic car I’m amazed how extensive the wiring is throughout the car. Wow.
That’s actually Hoovie’s Lamborghini Diablo VT
you're like Bob Ross for cars, so calm and relaxed all the time.
And Grumplestiltsken the rest of the time.
Alex Callas was going to add the same comment. 👍🏼
This GTB is worth fighting over. Well done!
Exotics have a pleasing and distinctive sound all of their own and I appreciate them for their beauty and performance but my favorite will always be classic American muscle with that bassy "WHOMP" on start up that can set car alarms off and a full throaty idling "BLUB, BLUB, BLUB".
Surely one of the most beautiful cars ever.
I love that when Magic Mike started the 308 and when you goosed the throttle the CC captioning says (MUSIC).
Nice job as always - there's quite a difference when " it's done right ".
And if it isn't done right, it isn't done.
Keep the 308 videos coming! This is one of my most favorite cars you have ever had in your shop.
Having Dual named as a cheap brand makes me sad, as when I was growing up it was a high-quality German audio brand. Same with Nakamichi. A Chinese company buys up the rights to a name and rides on its legacy while crapping on it.
My dual subwoofer with the built in amplifier sounds great and the dual radios that I have in 2 of my vehicles have performed flawlessly
I have a Dual head unit in my commuter car and I have not noticed any difference from my Kenwood that cost 3x more.
There still is a company named Dual GmbH making high end turntables.
Yup. I have a Dual 1009 turntable from the early 60's. Extremely well made, high quality thing.
@@VolkerHett My 1218 still works great.
Blaupunkt makes some shallow radios you could use, if you're not happy with the dual. Honestly, that's what a car of this caliber deserves.
The plates with writing on them are called escutcheons.
Well Ms Wiz, when he gets it all done and you get in it you're going to make that car look good! Team Girl story - Back in 1987 we were looking at an Alfa Milano (which we purchased - FUN car) and an Esprit was next to it. She got in the Lotus and I looked in and mentioned where is the beverage ice chest going. She looks at me and said "on the passenger seat!' Ouch! She knows how to hurt a guy!
Contact Stanceworks and see if he's got anything you can use on the interior.
The Wizard already said in a pervious video that he got some parts from him
@@j.d.8593
Really? Missed that. Thanks.
Right? I thought wiz knew... oh well
They were asking to much money.
*too
Incredible. I’d be envious if it wasn’t so obvious how much work this has been. Thank you for sharing this project.
That engine sound reminds me of Herbie's (the love bug) engine note.
Car Wizard you shuld thake a look at Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB it has the 80's look but the amenities of a modern car audio it's also low profile at the back
Wizard, I'm sure someone would love to collaborate with you on either 3D printing or even CNC creating a carb hat and filter box for you!
funny how im watching this video with the sound coming through one of those exact same head units dispite it being a cheap unit it actually sounds pretty decent bluetooth works pretty well with clear calls and audio this unit has been serving me now for 3 years no problems (used in a semi truck so gets alot of use) this unit is a great buy for the price
Well done, Wizard! One thing at a time.
I used to have a Triumph GT6 with dual carbs. Had a plate with red ball in tube. Red ball with move up with more Velocity. Found it easier to put head between carbs and listen for Harmony resisiom
There's a Air box for the 308 on ebay for 1600$. Ill try to send the link to u somehow.
Great update. Car is coming along nicely. Great work piecing the interior back together. The placement of the relays and control unit for the ignition looks awful. The factory placed the ignition modules on my 308Gtsi in the drivers side end, floor, of that compartment. And covered it up. Suggest you do that.
Sweet ride, can't wait for the first road test 😀
I dont know of the air cleaner, but third option, perhaps can contact somebody to make a heatshield for the existing air filters. Custom aluminium airbox?
16:10 is exactly the moment, where the car was transferred to Mrs. Car Wizard. 👍🤣
Mrs Wizard appreciates you getting HER car running.
As far as the seats go I could tell you that it most likely used Recaros so just find some old ones like the Specialist or SEs for it, but I warn they are not sized for let's say Bigger people. Maybe they were Corbeau seats because they still make a classic lineup too that are very similar to the originals.
The Car Wizard has resurrected the passion and soul of the Rosso Corsa prancing horse 👍
That's £2 in the Jar. Pay up 🤑😉
For the air cleaner go to a catering supplies place and get two large aluminium or stainless baking trays or terrines and cut the holes for the carbys in one and use the other as a lid.
Seen that done many times to great effect,
$10 stereo in a Ferrari!!! Awesome!
I know, there many better choices, but the real sound system is in the back.
You should check out Iain Tyroll's channel Wizard.
He sets up carburettor's on Lambo's and Ferrari's using a length of rubber pipe and a screwdriver.
Tyrolls an exceptionally knowledgeable Gent . Big up!
Is it just me or is this motor misfiring?
I have seen a 308 GTS in the 80s. The exhaust sound is amazing even if you are far away. It is a wonderful car and way ahead of its time back then.
Me: "C'mon Car Wizard - a Capristo exhaust can't be that expensive..."
Checks eBay for prices
Me: "Uh, point taken - those prices are CRAZY!!!"
Its just 5K, its dirt cheap...what are you guys even talking about!?
@Dominick you directed your comment as a reply to this comment, I think you meant to comment under the video.
@Dominick How about ya help me. I just ate chili for the third day in a row and i ran out of bread yesterday.
Why not just fiberglass patch that mid panel and recover it?
Try swedish Ferrita, they make stainless exhausts and often low series or pure custom systems, maybe they already have some in stock? I remember they changing the mufflers on a car much like that one, it had valves that opened all end pipes at a certain rev. But they made one with all open all the time. I don't know how that effected the engines fuelconsumtion nore soundregulations here in Sweden, but I think they had a UA-cam video about that project.
What my lawn mower sounds like a Ferrari? LOL just kidding.
I don't think it's running right tbh
All i can think about when i see this car is the motor humming and the music when chevy chase and the blonde are on the highway!
Guess I never knew what a 308 is supposed to sound like because that sounded like a Volkswagen bug 😆
I've never been hard on you before Wiz but I gotta be this time. The name of the game is to have the noise from that wonderful Ferrari V8 to listen to instead of a radio. Of course, with the Beetle sound of that engine, maybe a good radio is the way to go.
The wizard always delivers!
Or like the one in the UK who is cutting the roof off a Scuderia………..

Sounds like someone I know ... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Heck, just make and weld up your own exhaust. Doesn't have to be Titanium or anything exotic, just as long as it flows good and looks good. Also make your own intake tubing to bring in fresh air through the side scoops like it should have been in the first place. Italian hot rodding!
