Hi I owned a carburettor 308 for 20 years. The carbys were so reliable ,once set up nicely . I did not have to touch an idle mixture screw for over 15 years it always ran exactly the same. One of the important changes you need is an electronic ignition conversion with electronic spark curve ,many people fiddle with the carburettors because of inconsistent spark curve on the original ignition. I'm always amazed by the number of old Euro cars that have GM parts. I had a 1970 Lotus Europa which was built at the Lotus factory in England (I used to get so annoyed when know-it-all types would call it a kit car). But like all Lotus cars of the day, it was made up of Ford, Renault, GM and multiple other parts. Mine was upgraded to a track car and featured a Renault Gordini cross-flow hemispherical engine with a 5sp tranny. When I sold it in 2006, it still had the original power window motors which were Oldsmobile. I did upgrade the alternator to a GM alternator which was superior to the old Lucas or whatever it was.

for a generic quadrajet or holley, you're right. usually set it and forget it. but these italian carbs are NOT set it and forget it. literally every few months they have to be fully re-tuned just to deal with different air density from temperature changes with the weather. or if you go up a mountain pass, it will run terrible. the smartest thing for a car like this, to use as a joyrider, is to swap to fuel injection. it will also have better fuel economy, less emissions, and probably a bit more power.

    • @zxggwrt

I learned to love the Holley carb on my boat but only after I got an electronic ignition from D.U.I. Points etc are the cause of most carb issues on old cars and the reason the beltline was lined with cars, hoods up, in the 70s and 80s.

There are positives to carburetors. One thing is that if you drive a performance vehicle with a stick shift you will realize a huge difference. The first time I experienced it , I did not know what to think. It is called Rev hang. You let off of the accelerator quick to shift and the rpms won't drop quickly and you have to wait for them to come down. Then when you punch the accelerator, there is a lag before the motor reacts.
I was born in 1967. I have been a gear head all of my life. I got to enjoy huge V8 engines in small light cars with even bigger monster engines in mid sized cars of the time period. I drove lots of vehicles with stick shifts in all different forms. The funnest was a VW GTI with a stick. The second was a 74 Monte Carlo hotrod I built. 454 with a Muncie 6 speed. I had to roll the windows down when I opened it up so that they would not shatter when the top pulled away fro. The car at high speed.
Anyway a Holley 750 cfm double pumper was my carb of choice or the Quadra jet copy that Edelbrock put out.
The Holley was my favorite big block fuel feeder. It was very responsive with a stick. To this day a well tuned holley 750 will outperform injection on the dyno on a V8 old school muscle car.

you should have also used 12 hole injectors for better atomization, you'd get the same power with better fuel economy
and a better crank position sensor holder, the one you have will get loose and eat the sensor

Here in India, even motorcycles & scooters have moved on to fuel injection since introduction of BS-VI ( Equivalent to Euro-5) emission norms. One good side effect is mileage has improved even though the new 2-wheelers cost much more than before.
Some of that has to do with increasing prices of steels & plastic, but the BS-VI move & subsequent addition of FI caused price increase of about 8-10K INR ($100-130) in all 2-wheelers.
Now, nobody makes chips in India. And even after a war, and another almost war, we still get chips from China. Hopefully current Govt's PLI(Production Linked Incentive) program will work and we will wean ourselves off Chinese chips!!

4:00 one thing about radios etc in vehicles. You don't need an indash radio or gps or anything anymore....all you need is a small amplifier hidden away somewhere and an audio in jack from your phone and a phone mount. Your phone has everything that radio has and more.
To eliminate the "turn on" function of the amp/radio you just put an on/off switch to the turn on wire so when you want to listen to the radio, you just flip that switch. Now some amps are sensitive to a higher amperage higher voltage 12V turn on, some "thump" when you flip the switch, you can do that with a step down resister soldered into the turn on wire.
Once you eliminate the radio, you can make a nice cover plate for that area and attach your phone mount to it so it's nice and handy when you're driving.

These Weber carbs offer high flow meaning low depression across the carb. This also means these type carbs are very sensitive to any changes in fuel character, air pressure, and air temperature. On the other hand, carbs which have more pressure drop across the carb have more feedback which means much more stable operation across variations in the above mentioned parameters. This is a choice between the possibility of the very highest performance and a bit less performance with much more stable carb operation. If one wants more stable operation from a Weber carb use smaller throat inserts which will provide more feedback and more stable performance across the above variations.

I love carburetors, I've put SU carbs on an injected z-car because it was cheaper and simpler in my case to do so over refurbishing the efi system. I enjoyed tuning and balancing them, I give them a check over every few months, usually they don't need touching, and I believe the power and drivability difference is negligible over the efi it had. Too each their own, but I would've perservered with the Webers on that car just for the induction noise alone.

What do you mean what is going on, it’s simple supply and demand, demand is high in supply is low. To make things worse supply is low mostly due to global shortage because of factory shut downs for almost a year in some countries. The shortage is not just apply to this country, it’s globally.

  • @LMacNeill

I've tuned cars with dual carbs before, and that was *REALLY* difficult. I simply cannot imagine tuning *FOUR* of them -- particularly on a machine as finicky as a 1970s Ferrari.
You can always put it back to stock, too -- those TBI units bolt right up to where the carbs go, and it's really easy to switch back to the original fuel-pump. So the folks who are absolute sticklers for "originality" shouldn't be upset.

The interesting thing about the component shortage (it isn't just chips) is that one part might be out of stock with no more for 12+ months while another is available that is slightly different. The difference might just be what sort of package it is in. So companies that can quickly redesign products to use a slightly different chip can continue production. Of course, as soon as they do that, the other chip variant will be out of stock...
We're having to buy enough parts to last us 12-18 months now. Otherwise there is no point doing the design if we won't be able to make it when it's finished. Of course that doesn't help supplier stock levels but you gotta do what you gotta do. I bet everyone else is doing the same thing.

Manual (or "stick shift" as you call it) is more fun to drive, makes one feel really involved and gives more control, unfortunately I had to switch to automatic due to health issues (damaged spinal cord, thus my legs sometimes give up). But besides fun part and adverse conditions like mud, snow and ice, automatic has it's advantages too - continuous transfer of torque, ensuring faster acceleration, and convenience.

Heck, my mom had to go out and buy a whole new car because her ABS module went out the other day on her Prius and the shop didn’t feel good about any of the salvage parts that were available (and on brakes, I don’t blame them). A new ABS controller was going to be a few grand and take at least a 2-3 months to get. We’re not talking about anything exotic either, she drove a 2010 Prius.

You're gonna need 2" velo stacks inside the air box to actually get that extra HP out of those ITBs. That also requires extra height to the box, so OEM box is basically pointless. Just fab a new box out of alu sheet and paint it black. The original box was too small anyways, resulting said carburator issues. Also, your wiring harness is toasted. The main power lines have cooked insulators, and will burst into flames when powered back up.

I understand you (kind of), but I have years ago adjusted carburettors on hundreds of Ferrari's and Lamborghini's and adjusting these is an art and also to me nostalgic. You have to synch them once or twice a year but thats it. I am aware of that there are not many of us left who really can adjust these carbs (many claim they can but it is all lip service). Many can do laptop injection so in that respect you are probably better of with injection. However you do not get the authentic old Webber sound. 😏
