Is Purina Making Pets Sick? What About Recalls?

- Social Media is going crazy over claims that Purina products are making pets sick, even killing them. I watched and lived through pet food recalls. how does this latest social media craze line up with previous pet food recalls. And now other foods are being implicated, such as Blue Buffalo, Hills Science Diet, and others!

Thanks, I've heard the woman speaking and I am holistic, which I myself am and stand by. I do have a doctor but I don't always listen and I go the holistic route and make life style changes because I do think food is medicine. I do have two pets, cats. I had recently bought a bag of Purina One and I keep looking at it like should I or shouldn't I feed it to my girls. I've decided to give it a go after hearing you. I think its good to hear both sides and in this case I'm sticking with Purina. Thanks for taking the time. Lastly, I get what you're saying about You Tube. The good the bad. I recently had to choose sides when a group of You Tube content providers started acting like gangs, going after each other. Well, like choosing who to vote for, no one's going to be perfect but I'm going to choose someone. I think we're living in very uncertain times and it's worth paying attention, it keeps people on their toes and we've got a lot of slackers who need to pick it up because doing nothing and sticking your head in the ground is not good. I'm protecting what I believe in. While I'm sticking with Purina, I'm not a big fan of some corporations, or at least the people who own large corporations. Many have proven themselves to be eerily unconscionable or oddly stupid, maybe both. I believe in science, real science, not because I say so science. We need studies and recalls should not go away.
Nancy, thank you for such a great post! I hope you'll subscribe and stay in touch. the hostility on social media is getting awful. I call it the Social Media Monster! Like politics and religion, people can't have a dialogue about pet food now! i started getting pretty aggressive in my initial videos but I have learned to control myself now. i hope you'll watch more of my videos and give me your opinion!
This is such a great comment!!! Thank you for sharing!
Nancy, you bought a bag of Purina and have decided to feed it to your precious dogs because PuzzleGuy, a guy with either stock in the company or a paid social media influencer after working there for his whole career? Are you kidding? How about you read the ingredient list and understand how lousy are the ingredients.
Please look up "Silent Recall" to understand how many companies such as the original manufacture of the original "Interceptor" conducted a silent recall. PG pushes kibble and even the worst brands. He trolls all the natural feeding channels to try to argue that real, fresh, human grade food is bad for dogs. Human grade bad for dogs but good for humans and the waste from the human food industry healthy for dogs. If you believe this then I have a bridge to sell you in Arizona and heaven help your poor pets.
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy you are so right! There's a group (saving one pet at a time) that is extremely poorly ran. Lots of nit picking, very demanding and demeaning dog owners who completely forgot that dogs actually eat their own poop. 😂. I think anyone that becomes obsessive about something becomes a very unhealthy and irrational individual. Like there are some fanatics!!! People swearing that certain calorie products were full of glyphosate (lie), and so on. Even had someone say xanthum gum is toxic to dogs. Also another lie.
The group members are very dismissive, off the rails, and demand a respect for diarespect.
Not anything about saving a dog, but more about building your life around some personal opinions of strangers that you don't even know for critical decisions for your dogs
I quit eating processed foods 2 years ago. I make my own. If I recognized (a bit too late actually) how bad processed foods are for humans, why would I feed processed foods to my dog? I feed my Dachshund almost what I eat. Baked chicken and whole grain rice with carrots and peas. I know he is a small dog, but it doesn't really cost me much at all. No more yeast infections of the ears, his coat is shiny and he is happy and healthy.
Jim, human processed food is awful. If I overdo I can feel it in my joints! ua-cam.com/video/hG3GVEVPP4I/v-deo.htmlsi=TkecVSODX_zEmpze
That’s not really complete though, you need oils, organs, fish but not much, bone. Over time unbalanced food will cause severe health issues, but it takes years. Personally my Mum used to feed her dog a diet like that and if I hadn’t added balanced foods to his meals he would’ve died early as he had started to get really sick, hitting his 4th year.
@@CocoonsLastHope that’s the key issue with homemade diets! Too many people ignore that. If we talked more about nutrients delivered instead of just ingredients maybe that would help people understand.
Agree with Cocoons. Had family member who only fed thier dog cooked beef hamburger. That was it. She had terrible hair and one day she merely took a step off the back porch and broke her femur at the hip joint. Given her age they put her down. but the bones were mush. :( Make sure you balance your minerals!
Yep. I fixed it. Thanks!@@CocoonsLastHope
Thanks for addressing this issue, I appreciate it! Great to hear your honest opinion on this subject. Hope this whole situation gets figured out quickly, especially for the people feeding Purina to their pets.
This is interesting. I wasn't sure what direction you were going to take it. I am just now hearing of all this. However, my dog passed on Dec 24th, she started having seizures on Oct 21st. The ONLY thing that changed. Was switching her food to Purina. I talked to my vet about it and they said it was more likely a brain tumor and they never had me look at the food. I told them I switched, my gut told me it was food. I was told otherwise by multiple people. A few days before she died, I opened a new bag of Members Mark. I then gave that bag to a family member since I no longer had a dog, after the first feeding, her dog got severely sick, vomiting and bloody stool. She looked It up and there was a recall on Nov 9th. I had purchased it on Nov 1st. It's all too connected. I am absolutely positively sure, without a doubt that it was the kibble that made our dogs sick.
I am very sorry gif your loss. Is Members Mark a Purina product?
Members mark was named in the Victor recall.
With all due respect, I have a difficult time that people think that a bag from a factory is going to be better than the food we prepare in our own kitchens. I know it's alot of work. And it's nearly impossible to go all natural, but I have found that food prepared and served is just better than the stuff we get from store shelves
…… i’ve fed hills since 2019….. one of my dogs died and the other almost died…. tomorrow he’s been on locally made raw 2 weeks and doing fabulous…… something is WRONG with the food…..
i fed kibble and ONLY kibble, i thought the raw feeders were crazy….. and here i am 2 weeks into feeding raw and it SAVED MY DOG!!!
i have a feeling anyone defending the food manufacturers will be eating their words in a few months once testing is complete, i KNOW what my dogs have been through
Ashley, I am sincerely sorry about your dogs. For those of us like you, it’s devastating to lose them, especially when you think a company killed them. No one, including me, is defending any company. In fact, u started my channel to use my knowledge and experience to defend pet parents. If you believe with evidence thus far propels should simply stop feeding pet food, that’s simply not going to happen. And if they did, as even the raw proponents admit, at least half will do it terribly wrong because they won’t take the time to do it right. As I said in the video, the loss of one beloved pet is tragic but if all these foods were tainted by one substance there should be thousands and thousands of clinically proven deaths in vet clinics, and clinics contacting at least the big three who have nutritionists they could talk with. It simply doesn’t make sense. Hopefully we’ll get some answers soon but if this is all social media driven, there won’t be any answers.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy there is nothing else explaining why my dog improved upon changing to raw…. he’s been on hills through all of this (fed ONLY hills since 2019 with intermittent purina canned) and deteriorated until i switched…. i never suspected the food until i had enough and took him off the low and behold he recovers…. if it wasnt the food making him sick then taking him off the food shouldn’t have made a difference… i’ve initiated complaints and to my knowledge FDA is beginning to test samples….
why wouldn’t a contamination at the supplier level explain it, maybe the specific companies didn’t taint the food but where they obtain ingredients did…
something is wrong with the food and it warrants looking into……
@@Ashley-vm1bdabsolutely it could be something from a supplier and I’m all for lots of testing. It’s just the inconsistencies that don’t add up. It’s such a small amt of dogs over so many brands and yet no actual evidence. Trust me, I want an answer as much as you.
My first time seeing your channel and I appreciate you addressing this. You answered some questions that I've had about what I've seen on other channels.
I had heard of the Purina issue, but hadn't really looked into it and just assumed it was some batch of something getting contaminated the same way most recalls go.
But watching this video... wow. It really does seem to be the pet food equivalent of a moral panic.
Anyway, I am so thankful for your videos. So much of what is available online from pet owners comes from the "pet food companies are evil" side, it's nice to have someone who is so willing to explain the actual *proven* science of pet food.
well thanks! Im happy to do it.
I've been waiting for someone reputable to talk about this. To me the math didn't add up. And I didn't trust the source pushing the campaign...no cases from veterinarians, just self reports from pet parents who are being horribly misled to think correlation is equivalent to causation.
I have totally respect for you! Social media has created a frenzy about pets food. I take it with a grain of salt! 🧂
Thank you!
Thank you for this update! You approached it very professionally and with compassion for those who have lost their furbabies.
I am currently feeding Purina Pro Plan large Breed Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon and Rice. He is on his second bag, and he is doing great on it. He was on one the all life stages food but I realized it was just too much for him. It was causing excessive burping and acid indigestion.
After I switched him, I started seeing all the reports about this food killing and making dogs sick. I called my vet and Purina and was assured the food was fine. Several at my vet’s office feed their animals Purina Proplan. Then I found your video about this, and all this put together made me feel more confident about him Purina.
One thing to note is that Purina is changing ome of their proplan sensitive formulations by removing the live probiotics. His new bad no longer has them, so I wonder if that was causing some issues for pet owners who didn’t know and didn’t transition to the new formula.
I do wish companies would let consumers know there has been a formula change upfront…
Looking to switch to Science diet but I wanted to talk to my vet first about which one would be best for him. Tried the science diet healthy mobility but he wouldn’t eat after about two days. I think the kibble was just too large and it was really hard. Just don’t think he like it.
Anyway, thanks for this video and your wonderful channel.
First, i just subscribed. Love your content...i almost fell for this mania about pet foods. I have a 6 1/2 year old cat, who i love more than life. I was going to cook her homemade food, but my vet calmed me down. I followed that insane Facebook page....stopped!
I feed my Alice Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo, and Tiki Cat.
Kibble, Hills indoot and Tiki Cat high protein.
Thank you thank you!
First time puppy parent to our sweet little English Bulldog. When this story came out we were just finished transitioning our little guy to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & stomach Salmon. I did all my homework before we even brought him home and felt SO good about that choice. When I saw the claims my heart sank and I went into stress /worry mode. Quickly got him onto Open Farm Wild Caught salmon/ancient graines, but honestly wasn’t sure about that one. He’s done good on it but not as good as when he was on PPP. And after doing more homework I guess that formula works just well for puppies but not when he gets older due to the increased minerals. 🙄
Fast forward now I found your channel…Wow I’ve learned SO much! Seeing you post about this I now feel confident to put my little guy back on Purina.
Good grief it’s ridicules what Social Media can do. Especially for new pet parents like me who just wants the best for our pups. I have felt I have just been yelled at from all over the web to stay away from kibble because it’s the devil! All kibble is not the same, for sure,I saw that for myself when I changed our pup from a cheap chicken based kibble from the breeder to Purina PP. He was So much healthier! Skin, coat, and he didn’t stink (if you get my drift)😂. Anyhow, thank you again for your sound, EDUCATED information. Really means the world!
You’re a blessing!
Thanks for your video! I love your channel which is full of sane, sound advice! Lol I’m in Canada and my two dogs were sick with diareah upon opening a new bag of Proplan Sport Salmon in Nov. it continued for weeks so after seeing multiple posts on social media I decided to switch to Royal Canin to be safe. They are doing fantastic.
Wendy, its a topic that hasn't come up in years but I remember Hills saying they were a fixed formula. in other words, the nutrient levels were consistent but also the ingredients used. Purina was an open formula, meaning they would keep the nutrients but would sometimes change the ingredients depending on season, cost, etc. and I would tell vets if a client says they're on the same food but just started a new bag, it could be a change in ingredients causing the diarrhea. I haven't thought of that in years till your comment.
I was on a group that had a witch hunt on Purina, these people are NUTS.
they are insane LOL
I was on there for a brief time but I couldn't handle the total ignorance to reality! Its sad because they mean well, but wow!
Ok, after watching this video, I see you DO know about this Dr. Judy Morgan. That's all I wanted to know.👍 On one of her latest videos, I commented/suggested, EVERYone also watch your and Dr. Rea's channels/videos for more rounded info sources.
She's a whack job, holistic,grain free,raw diet guru
My cat vomited his food. I could blame it on the kibble or remember he can't have chicken. That page would have me blame the kibble AND looky, I can buy her raw food. She is causing people to panic and freak out. That what upsets me. It is very upsetting.
The first 10 minutes were a calm, measured, honest video on an emotional topic. Well done. Less than one thousand pets. But if one of them is yours, you would be pretty upset. So far, there have been no problems with the fresh chicken and ground beef my cats and I eat.
well thanks! hey, human meat has recalls too! Was heading on a camping trip and went to buy some steaks. there was a recall and the store had none. Ended up buying hot dogs!
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy You are welcome. No meat recalls in the last year that I have been feeding my cats. Bad meat is probably healthier than those hot dogs! LOL
@@edschulhof6303 yeah, we thought the same thing!
Thank you for this video, I am a first time dog owner of an 8 year old Pomapoo who is just as important to me as my children and I can not believe I went40 years without knowing the love of a dog. I don't know much about dogs so I'm listening to all this making myself crazy I quit purchasing dry cable and I've been making his dog food at home which is in return make me crazy because I've been worried that he's not getting the proper nutrition it has been an absolute headache and 24-hour a day challenge just to feed my dog. Library much thank you for your Insight coming from someone who has been in the industry the information is priceless to me so thank you again.
I was removed from the Facebook group this chatter has been going on in ( we all know which one)The only comment I made in the group was that the list of foods the admin is recommending as well as some other people linked to it should not be taken as the source of truth. Some of the foods on that list had calcium and phosphorus at weird percentages. They also have a link to this page where you pay $10 and it gives you a list of recommended dog foods. Do your research before you trust anything. And next day I was removed. I love my dog, and I joined the group because I was curious on how true these allegations are, which I still have no idea, but the admin removed me for telling people to trust their research.Feels fishy to me. I’m very curious on what is to happen next, and also appreciate your take on the issue.
Jayati, the best group I have found is on Facebook. Canine: nutrition and did food discussion. It’s a great group of folks seeking the truth thru science rather than marketing trends. You should check it out. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Ironically, the great majority of people in that group feed kibble and most are looking for a different kibble. Suggesting homemade or raw, gets a lot of negative feedback. Several posts had comments turned off by the moderator.
@@edschulhof6303 I like that they link qualified people like Tufts and others. I haven’t had time to read them but I guess I agree with insisting on scientific evidence.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy This group never supports raw (for good reason), but they do support homemade food only when it's formulated by a board certified veterinary nutritionist, and they guide members to the directory link.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuydefinitely will join! Thank you
Do you have stocks in the pet food companies? Or are being reimbursed in any way for supporting them?
lol! I should be paid by them! But no, I’m sure I would have to give the company line and I want the freedom to speak freely. These companies have armies of lawyers! Besides, when I do nutrient comparisons, it reveals how good or not so good some of their diets are compared to others. So I don’t see them wanting to sponsor me! I had no idea I would be defending dry food against the raw and anti kibble crowd. My initial purpose was just to help folks evaluate commercial dry and canned food, not have to answer crazy misleading claims from folks not liking kibble. I also have no stock in any food company or parent company. I tried day trading during Covid and did pretty good till I lost most of it! Invested in FreshPet but didn’t make any money. But seriously I understand you figuring I must be getting paid to take the time, but my newest video from yesterday explains my motivation best. I hope you stick around and check out a few of them.

I live in Canada. I feed my cats Purina Urinary Care, Purina Fancy Feast canned, and Science Diet kibble/canned and they are both very healthy. I'm not about to switch their food, unless there is a problem because they get very stressed out when I do this to them. I respect that people are going to have different opinions on what to feed their pets, I just wish the topic didn't have to come with such anger and division towards others.
TJ religion, politics and pet food…. Can’t do it without anger and division. No listening, no understanding. Strange times we live in.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy yes but if you look back in history, religion and politics have always caused division, in many cases horrific atrocities. You can add raising kids to that list as well, as wow that sure gets people fired up and angry very quickly. This whole anger and hatred towards others for how they feed their pets, yes, it is really frustrating.
The people in that group are vicious! I have been lurking there just to see what all they’re saying and it’s just. Ugh. Nonsense. Finally left that group today.
Thanks a lot for the content! Much appreciated! I am becoming a kitten parent in a month or so. I am currently looking with which pet food I would go for. I live in Europe and I am doubting between Purina Pro Plan Kitten and Hill's SD Kitten. From my reasearch I see that Hill's is a little bit underdosed for iron (
cant really comment on every micronutrient.we need to understand the regulatory folks give ranges but ultimately it comes down to trusting a company's scientists, chemists and nutritionists. Certain companies have proven they seem to know what they're doing. We can evaluate as best we can but ultimately, we trust someone with the health of our pet.I spend most of my time looking at nutrient excesses that affect adult/senior pets. A growing kitten is going to do fine with any major commercial kitten food. I wouldn't get stressed over it.
Purina made my dog have explosive diarrhea saw vet flagyl wormers but it returned as soon as done. Started home made food my dog is 100% cured
This all Mumbo jumbo. If that’s true. A class action lawsuit will be here by now. Or even Purina doing a recall
I have to agree.
Thanks for this video! I’m in Canada and giving purina essential care and my dogs are fine but obviously got me worried. Let’s hope it’s all miss information even if it’s not very nice!

We couldn't find a recall. We stopped Purina food and threw it all into the trash.
I’ve had 8 clients gets sickened by their food, 2 were Purina and 3 were Hill’s Science Diet. I was Petsitting 2 dogs who developed hemorrhagic gastroenteritis from a new bag of Hill’s…. The company never replied & instead sent me 2 coupons in an envelope (no letter, no inquiry on how the dogs were doing, if they had recovered.) zero response from Hill’s, despite sending pictures of the normally pale yellow kibble covered in some sort brown gunk.
So a new bag of Hills dry food that normally is pale yellow is covered in brown gunk…. And your client fed it and the dogs got really sick. First of all, if it were me, I would not have fed pet food with brown gunk in it. But if someone in the house did, and not one but two dogs got sick, I would be finding a lab to test and I would not accept zero response from Hills. But just for what it’s worth, what brown gunk could be in one bag of food but not in dozens of not hundreds of bags from the same batch? And what about Purina? Is there brown gunk in their food? I actually would love to see those photos!
I am feeding Purina Urinary for my cats. As you said it is quite good. But i am worried a tiny bit. Some pet parents suggest to change food brands and textures once in a while. What is your suggestions on another alternative? Being budget friendly, i am considering to change to Royal Canin Fit. Do you think it is good?
a few folks have asked about Fit. Ill have to look into it. Mouth feel is important to cats, but they are all individuals like us. years ago if a vet diet only came in canned a dry food cat might have trouble. now there's so many forms and flavors for vet diets that's really not a concern. You could offer canned as a treat or holiday meal. we do that.

Do dog food companies randomly test a percentage of finished product before they ship to try to catch issues?
you would think that! and I want to say yes, but its hard to get a straight answer. i know certain stages are tested, especially the macronutrients, protein, fat, carbs but it seems to me certain mineral mixes are pretested. Its a really good question i need to research more!

I feed 3 different Purina dog food, and the kitty gets Purina as well. No problem so far. One of the comments I have heard about these alleged issues is that Purina reimbursed one pet owner for vet bills. A few years ago Purina reimbursed my daughter after her dog ended up at the e-vets very sick, and the vet did think it was the food. It turned out the dog had an intolerance for chicken, and has been on Pro plan salmon for years. But Purina did pay the emergency vet bill.
Wow! I'm impressed they did that. That's how careful companies are now. That's why Purina's behavior in this tells me they know they dont have a nutrition problem, though definitely a PR problem.
Purina is garbage food. Like Burger King or McDs.
Well CJ, you’re entitled to your opinion, and I do appreciate you voicing it, but u would encourage you to try and evaluate the difference between human fast food, it’s purpose and processing, vs a company creating complete diets for healthy animals and even sick animals. You might find, just maybe, that your knee jerk opinion isn’t based on fact. But that’s something we all need to do.
