How do you make piano covers?
i find the key signature and bpm of the song im trying to cover. then i start transcribing the melody and labeling the song's different sections. afterwards i start adding notes in the bass clef. then i finalize everything by adding dynamics, octaves, different voicings, stuff like that
i dont necessarily do it in that exact order but its generally what i do to make covers. the program i use to actually create the sheet music is Musescore 4, and i use Audacity to put in audio files for easy playback (especially repeating sections)

1a. Key Signature?
If the key signature isn't already provided, I first look at the notes in the melody (assuming that I've already transcribed some of it) and count the sharps/flats. From there I can generally assume what key it is. Another way I find the key signature is looking at the chords. If there's a chord progression like "Dm G C" for example, I know the key is in C major because it resolves to a C(major) chord. Many songs ends with the chord that matches the key, so that can be used to find the key signature as well.
1b. BPM?
I start the song and use a metronome (this one to be exact: www.musicca.com/metronome ) to find the BPM of the song. More specifically, I:
-play the song and then start the metronome on the beat
-adjust the speed of the metronome if its too slow/fast compared to the song
(sometimes I use the TAP TEMPO option on that metronome if I want to just have an estimate)
2. Section Length?
The length of sections varies between songs, so I can't say for sure. The sections that I mark on my scores are the Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, and Outro.
3. Finding the Right Keys for the Melody?
I play small portions of the song and enter in notes on Musescore to transcribe the melody. It's basically a process of guess and check, where I hear the melody and then try to replicate it.
This also goes for the rhythm of the melody. I guess and check both the pitch and the duration of the melody at the same time. I think it's ineffecient but that's what I do.
4. Instrumental or Original?
I use both. For the melody, I use the original. For the bass clef, I use the instrumental.
