    I read that Shadow Morton once said that Mary Weiss was the hardest worrking 14 year-old he ever met. I admire that.

    I love it -- they were all tomboys as young girls -- rebels from the beginning! Mary wasn't "just" a singer -- she was an actress, pure and simple. Those songs were full-blown mini-dramas in her hands. I always wished she'd kept on and pursued a career in theater and/or film; she definitely had the chops for it.

    I interviewed The Shangri-Las in 1966 for Tiger Beat Magazine, I was 15 & they weren't that much older. Loved them.

      How did you get that job at 15? Lucky cat. Was the interview published? I'd like to read it. What were they like? Did you meet all 4? There aren't too many interviews of them from the 60s surprisingly.

      @@ravibhandari9050 it really wasn't a job somehow I won a contest a got a Tiger Beat Press Card, there were only the 3, Mary & the Ganser twins. I was shocked when I asked about their favorite singers & they named people like Tony Bennett ect.They said they were tired of staying in hotels & wanted to go home to be around their friends. They did like working with Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich.I really just wanted to meet them after the show & used that card for that purpose.They were cool, the kinda girls I liked at school.I think Tiger Beat just published a little paragraph about it.

      @@tonyrussi7777 My mother is about the same age as them and also from Queens. Bennett was a God to NY, second only to Sinatra. Of course my mother certainly wasn't into either of them as a teenager since it was all about rock and roll. My impression is that the Shangri-Las had more sophisticated musical tastes than the material they recorded. I think they were embarrassed by Leader of the Pack despite it being their most successful track. Good on you for getting to meet them. Ellie Greenwich often spoke of their attitudes in the studio. I'm actually quite surprised that they said they enjoyed working with her.

      @@ravibhandari9050 I was heavy into Motown & Phil Spector groups but "Leader.." was my least fave of the Shangrilas. Mary was the main one I talked to, she was really down to earth . I didn't have a pen or paper when I showed their road manager my Tiger Beat card & he opened their dressing room & said "these kids are from Tiger Beat, they wanna talk to ya."LOL

    Liz and Mary were harmonizing from the beginning. Liz was a growling rock voiced singer... her lead vocals on Twist and Shout and Simon Says are barn burners. Once Mary took the job as lead singer, her sweet pop voice lent itself to those operatic songs. The Ganzer twins provided real DRAMA ... but each of them carried astonishing Gospel/R&B voices. Listen to Mary Anne on "I'm Blue" sometime. Wow. When the four of them were in a room together, all singing at once, witnesses have reported everyone got goosebumps. Everyone knew they were in the presence of greatness.

    INK SPOTS!! HA! I love thinking of Mary and Liz just singing their hearts out for big brother George (RIP). I hear the Everlys in those really rich 4 part harmonies the Shangs did like in Out In The Streets or Run Run Diddy, or the "gone gone gone" at the end of Leader of the PAck. But I hear that pre-rock n roll phrasing in the way Mary sang lyrics like Train from Kansas City.

      Betty was a little older and was in and out of the group at various times. One of my favorite things is to listen to the songs and pick out who is singing lead. Betty's voice was a little deeper, but smooth as silk. Most importantly, whoever was singing, you believed them!

    Yeah,why would it not be a given for these ladies to be recognized for the Hall of Fame or given a Star on Hollywood Blvd,they sure deserve it but then again it would insult the art they produced to stand them with some of the lesser talent that is already recognized,gimme a break.

    I agree with you "guitbibble." The interviewer (Warren Zanes) in this video is a douchebag. He used to be in a Boston band called The Del Fuegos. But he is certainly no journalist. Who knows how he got his job at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? This just shows why the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is such an non-credible entity, with guys like him in positions of responsibility.
    The R&R HOF has also ignored many legendary acts while passing through others. It is an elitist clique that includes "Rolling Stone" publisher Jann Wenner, a man who used to print retractions to his critics' negative reviews of big league acts (such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young), when said acts and/or their record labels complained, and threatened to pull advertising. That magazine ceased to have credibility once this was commonly known.

    • @kennethlatham3133
      @kennethlatham3133 3 роки тому +1

      I have my own reasons for despising Rolling Stone Ragazine but the primary reason is the way they re-rated their 1979 Rock"n"Roll Album guide, crapping all over records they had highly praised in that initial edition. The motives for such re-evaluations cannot help but suggest corrupt influences. There's one band in particular who took on the chin hard from these two-faced Yawkers. The music is the same; the reviewer is the one who changes. Well who gives a 💩 .
