    Carol fan club checking in.
But seriously, one of the best shows I’ve seen ever was Reigning Sound as a 3 piece with Greg, Carol, and Lance. They were loud, fast, and tight and the 2 part M/F harmony on the choruses and stuff was really special and not something on any of their albums. It was awesome.

Greg did an in-store solo electric the early afternoon AFTER a show (they got here too late, he's a man of his word--played for almost an hour fielding requests with a hangover and what he claimed was a blown out voice, did some stunning versions of Compulsive Gamblers and seldom played Reigning Sound songs...it was recorded but i need his ok to post anything, the best version of Find Me Know I've ever heard and others. I was trying to contain my fanboy-dom as he used my practice amp and mic, refusing any compensation of records. There is a video someone took if you search Reignign Sound Buffalo Spiral Scratch Records, but someone came in with a pro-set up and made a handful of dvd's. After the packed shop show, to make it more surreal, i could see greg and my late mother embroiled in conversation....i could only imagine what they were talking about. The first line-up was my last show before pandemic. I still havent seen a live band...but the first three or four albums was that band of Memphis Creeps (inside Oblivians joke...super great and humble guys). She was living in nyc when the Dolls and later Thunders, Blondie were doing her songs and envisoned a punk-styled Shangri-la's. The surviving members recorded, but ultimately were unhappy with the material which never was released. Feeling screwed by the record industry (they undoubtedly were, the disullisioned Shangri-la's were nearly a huge influence and covered band from Aerosmith and Twisted Sister to New York Dolls/Johnny Thunders, Jesus and Mary Chain cited them as a primary influence, Superchunk, Amy Winehouse, and many indie and punk acts. Greg wasnt taking no for an answer and this performance--seemed everyone was nervous but settled in and she sounded great not to mention i was so happy for Reigning Sound to be on Late Nite TV--both definitely deserved the exposure.

If the Shangri-Las had released that new wave record they recorded for Sire in 1978, it would have sounded like this!

Jesus and Mary Chain, the NYC 70s punk scene, Amy Winehouse, Neko Case and TONS of others either covered them or cited them as a prime influence. They were taken advantage of by the music industry--she almost did a 70s punk influenced incarnation of Shangri-La's styled after Blondie and Patti (not punk) Smith. weiss allegedly had to be talked into doing this, critically acclaimed, lp and subsequent performance, US and European tour. The Hives covered this song, all written by Greg and Co. that man is the embodiment of rock and roll soul and has a heart of gold. Im sure he made her believe she could pull it off and she did.

Absolutely. Debbie and Chris Stein's pre-Blondie group The Stilettos did a sort of cabaret-punk-girl group thing that was heavily influenced by The Shangs!

Is it just me or is this almost punk?

    • @JohnnyFriendly

Good call. If it wasn’t for the shangri-las and the ronettes, there wouldn’t have been any punk, at least not the way that it happened. The Dolls, ramones and the damned all come from the same girl-group lineage so it seems fitting that its come full circle with Mary sounding “punk” all these years on .

Absolutely. The Shangs were the punk rock girl group so it's totally fitting!

Reigning Sound, her backing band here, were garage punk. This song was originally recorded by band leader Greg Cartwright’s older band Compulsive Gamblers.
