RIP Jan. 19, 2024 Mary Weiss, the youngest (15 in 1964, but they started performing at school proms years earlier) and most famous, beautiful lead singer of The Shangri-Las (1963-68), whose streetwise attitude fitted them well since these actually cute teenagers (2:15) came from a tough neigborhood in Queens, NYC, touring from 1964 with bands such as Tacoma, WA loonies The Sonics (Kurt Cobain's favorite band, known mainly for their novelty song 'Don't Believe in Christmas' 1965), Vanilla Fudge ( a band I saw circa 2001, makes you think...), young Iggy Pop's early band The Iguanas and when touring in England, UKs The Animals and The Beatles.
Mary's older sister Elizabeth (Betty, 77) was a mom already at 18 in 1964 (three years after I was born...), leaving the rest as a trio for a while before returning in 1965, and is the only one alive today. The band had no hits after 1966, and in 1967 Marge (or Margie, born Marguerite) Ganser (the outspoken one of the Ganser twins who were 11 months older than Mary, and sometime lead singer who probably saw herself as the leader of the pack...) left to go back to school, and died almost 30 years later from breast cancer in 1996, aged 48. A disillusioned Mary Ann (sometimes wrongfully written Maryann) Ganser became an alcoholic and drug addict already by 1968, and died March 16 (not 14 or 15), 1970 from an OD (heroin or barbiturates, there are different versions), less than 2 months after her 22nd birthday.
Aerosmith covered their 2nd largest hit, 'Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)' (their first hit in 1964) in Dec.'79 (and on their 1980 comeback LP 'A Night in the Ruts'), and Billy Joel (1:11) played piano on their only #1, 'Leader of the Pack' (Vroom, vroom with musical star Robert Goulet on the bike), the classc line "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" being re-used first thing on UK punk greats The Damned's first LP in 1977. And when they toured with James Brown, he was just as surprised as I once was to realize they were white (unlike their contemporaries The Shirelles, The Crystals and The Supremes) - and in trousers!
Even as I write these lines (with a little help from my friends at Wikipedia...), people from all over the world are downloading the same, various Best of/Greatest Hits albums with The Shangri-Las as I do, and people are commenting on them everywhere here on YT.

In an interview, a female interviewer asked Mary Weiss if she was crying when she was in the studio recording "Leader Of The Pack" and she said "No" and quickly added "I was crying while recording I Can Never Go Home Anymore"... That says it all. Every once in a while decades later someone does "THE RIGHT THING"... With The Grammy's coming up (and later this year The CMA Awards" lets see if the people who run these shows "gets it right" and honors The Shangri Las (my favorite girl group) and has somebody somewhere on the show do one or more of their massive hits like this oe or "Leader Of The PacK'. Or are they going to follow in the footsteps of The CMA Awards show who after Charlie Daniels died paid tribute to Charlie Daniels with a mere :43 seconds of The Devil Went Down To Georgia. The bottom line is COMMON SENSE IS VERY UNCOMMON THESE DAYS... Let's see what happens. The Grammy people are you listening??

This song always makes me cry....so hauntingly bittersweet.
Same with me. Mary sings this with such emotion. I can feel her pain. I think that just about everyone, can find a moment in time, where we made a decision, that would destroy a loved one. This Song teaches us we must make amends before it’s too late.
@@cherub711100 Very true. That's why whenever I talk to my brothers ( one's in a nursing home, the other lives in another state) I tell them I love them because you never know when it might be the last conversation.

The "string" section of the song makes it beautiful but the song is dark and eerie. These girls did a fantastic job on the song. Another 60s girl artist did it but it wasn't as good!

Twenty five years later on November 6th, 1965 "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" by the Shangri-Las entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #6 and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100...
Sadly, two of the four original members have passed away; Mary Ann Ganser {1948 - 1970} and Marge Ganser {1948 - 1996}; they were identical twins...
May they both R.I.P. along with Mr. Wolfe {1900 - 1938}

But I couldn't believe that I read on the back of a Greatest Hits Album of The Shangri-Las that came out in a about the 1980"s, when they had to leave Redbird Records in the late '60"s because Redbird went out of business
They had to leave Redbird in the late 1960's, since Redbird went out of business. They moved to Mercury Records and made a lot of good records, but sadly none of them charted!
