BMW M5 Hybrid G90 Review: Does the Extra Weight Kill the M5’s Legacy? Welcome back to RBR, and today is all about the #BMWM #M5 hybrid G90. This is the seventh-generation model and it's a whole new concept combining a 585HP V8 engine with a 197hp electric motor. But despite the impressive figures of 727HP and 1000NM -- everyone is crying fowl of the weight figure. And rightly so, it’s almost 500kg heaver than the last M5! Will that extra bulk ruin its typical #bmw driving dynamics? Let's find out!
Today I will drive the car in Munich, and we will put it through it’s paces: ncluding its 0-60 time (claimed 3.5 seconds and tested on launch) and see if the chassis tech can keep it sharp on the road despite its size and weight.
In this video, we need to answer the big questions:
Is the M5 Hybrid still the driving machine we need it to be?
Does the hybrid system make it slower than the old M5 as figures suggest?
Is the M3 not a better alternative now?
I’ll also go over the basis of the car with you again as I peel back the skin and explain how the hybrid system works, as well as why BMW’s approach to the battery position etc may be better than rivals. I’m also keen to test out the electric mode which gives 197HP and 280NM of torque from its electric motor, powered by an 18.6 kW battery. Apparently it offers a range of 43 miles, something i’ll also confirm today!
Despite the added weight, the car features the best M has to offer in terms of underpinnings: we have M xDrive with an active M differential, drift mode, and a near-actuator slip limiter, as well as adaptive M suspension with electronic dampers at each wheel. Rear-wheel steering (1.5 degrees) adds to the car’s agility, and there’s been significant chassis stiffening to improve handling, along with a rigid mounted variable steering rack.
So, with all that M DNA packed in, will the weight really kill it? Can the BMW M5 Hybrid live up to its legendary predecessors? Watch to find out!

Hope they coming out with a comp with more HP..
So many vids talking about 850HP
And missing the gear shifter for sure.
It's crazy that the c63 is in the same price range as the new m5 and they two different classes of car.
One is a soy 4 cylinder garbage and the other one is a menacing rocket ship that turns heads everywhere.
Actual insanity that they are the same price
4 cylinder garbage?
Gotta give props to BMW for somehow selling the new M5 for the same price as the old one. Usually with hybrid tech you’re adding on a good few thousand dollars onto the price tag
Merc learned their lesson with the EQ lineup they quietly discontinued for 25. Glad BMW didn’t go there… although, that XM looks SICK in person.
In 26, the V8 will be returning to AMG with the 48v electrified hybrid engine after some body modifications. They’ve prepped it nicely with the AMG I6 in the new CLE53. Still, different body styles, different weights.
I hope they get slapped with the poor sales of 2.0L I4… WHY they decided to bastardize the C, E and GLC 63’s with a 2.0L I4 knowing damn well they’re going to release the V8 and the I6 in future AMG 63 and 53-respectively, is completely beyond me. 🤮
In my opinion, Porsche and AMG have gone overboard with their pricing. Raising prices by around €30k with each model change is just crazy. When you look at the current massive sales declines for these brands, it’s no surprise to see these recent developments.
Mercedes is an actual rip off. Over £180k for a GT63s AMG e performance. And also the SL63/65 convertible 2 seater...that's just stupidity. What kinda bimbo would have 2 brain cells and choose a dead ass merc over a 911 Turbo S, lambos and ferraris, Bentley, and Aston Martins.
Absolutely. And it’s not just the amg models, their normal versions too. I went for bmw because the same class and level would have been 20k more at merc.
@@tejaksz I think the luxury only strategy of Ola has failed.
@@tejakszMercedes is worse than BMW models and more expensive

This car on the road is going to have SO MUCH presence.
Yeah its not the best looking M car ever, but certinely not the worst one either. With M performance parts it looks soo good, and first time ever that a 5 series is widebody. Just wish it wasnt so fat.
Yes. Presence at the ugly child prom.
It reminds me so much of bullet bill from Mario kart especially in matte black. Sooo menacing
I love it personally!
The Touring version looks beefy.
Best review I've seen of this car yet. Glad you made it clear that this is the way the industry is going. BMW had no choice but to use the hybrid system in the new M5. It was either that or something full electric. The fact of the matter is that this car will be driven by rich businessmen who will use this to fly on the Autobahn between meetings. The new M5 has that, plus it is now more usable than older M5s with the hybrid system.
I am personally not a fan of hybrid systems, but if you have a place where you can always charge the car, it makes the most sense. This is going to attract a lot more buyers, as now people have a more usable M5. Plus, you save money if you use one as a company car.
I really don't get it when people say it has no soul. The M5 hasn't had a soul since the E60 with the V10. Since the F10, the M5 has always been a bit muted.
The weight is a penalty, but there are many more upsides than downsides to the new M5. What do you expect BMW to do? They managed to work with what they have, and they've done a much better job than AMG when they tried to use hybrid technology.
And to those who say it looks ugly, see one in person and you will change your mind. I live less than 10 minutes away from the M headquarters and I see a load of these being tested every day. They have so much presence.
Agree on the soulless M5s buddy! They never did it for me in that regard other than the CS!
Exactly
In Belgium, for the old V8 non-hybrid M5 you will pay 9k registration tax and 4k annual road tax. If you have it as a company car your benefit of kind is 26k per year. This new G90 M5, your registration tax is 54€, yearly road tax is 1.500€ and benefit of kind is 5k per year.
This car will be sold like hot cakes in Belgium. I have read the same thing in the Netherlands. All thanks to the hybrid system, low CO2.
lol at making the excuse that this is the way the industry is going. It's no excuse for shitty cars and will just lead to the death of the enthusiast car industry.
@@itdobelikedat4202 name me 1 car that is currently being made right now that isn’t compromised in some shape or form due to legislation. The M5 isn’t a shitty car. No auto manufacturer builds a shitty car, just remember that if M had their way, they would also rather have pure ICE car than something hybrid or fully electric. Just remember, bmw don’t build cars for fans, they build them for customers. And I’d bet your bottom dollar that most people who buy these M5s are not enthusiasts, but are people who want to have the speed, luxury and brand of a BMW M product. These are the people that buy the cars. We, the enthusiasts, will cry that bmw don’t make small light naturally aspirated monsters, but bmw won’t listen to us. The car industry is dying and is in an awful place right now. Unfortunately, we just have to sit and watch it burn.
I really hate the direction that most of the car industry is going.
Boring, quality like, plastic. Same with me
Move to Mars then
all while asking for more money for their products too
It's transition time from petrol to electric right now so we have the very shit, but design wise BMW is dead
@@evanhi450 just traded my car for a 1997 c180 manual with 36k km, for real
Oh no, I fear the same thing is happening again to me. I start to like the look of this thing from the front. Just like it happened with the G 82
It's a better design than what BMW have been doing.
Same here, with each review i watch i start to like the car more and more
The car looks absolutely sick imo the f90 looks old
honestly the look is not so bad i just dont understand why bmw drop a hybrid system into this they should have just drop a uprated version of the f90 motor somwhere around 650-700hp maybe a mild hybrid system but try to keep weight within 100kg of its old variant it would be a much better car.
This car is the reason why I sold my m3cs ‘24 and bought an M5 Cs
Some say it does not feel like 2.6 tons... That could well be the case. But it begs the question: daily use cost - what happens with tyre, brakes, pads, alloy wheels, suspension maintenance and replacement cost??? That's a rethorical question 😉
Tyres and brakes could get costly but it depends how you drive. I don't think many people will be taking a M5 to a track.
@v4skunk739 you do not have to track a 2.6t car to have massive costs on all those things. In fact, you do not need to drive it aggressively on road also. The high weight is a killer for all those items!!!
@@v4skunk739 I take my M5 Comp to the track time to time and my brakes takes a beating. My car ('22 M5 Comp) is really too heavy for the track.
My point is the M5 should be a capable track car. I have fun chasing my daughter in her C8 Corvette on the track (she kills me on the corners 🤣)
you think M5 owner cares about daily use cost lmao ?
@@MaggotCZ As a M5 owner, I do not care!
If I am worry about daily cost, then I would have gotten a Honda Civic.
I have been refreshing my You Tube in the last 24 hours for this video particularly from Raz.
I hope alpina will do a b5 gt version of this ... i really love the new alpina b3 gt ... better looking n performance than the normal m3
It’s been like 4 years
Y’all need to get over it now🤦🏿♂️
Unless you do a lot of miles and require the extra comfort, the M3/M4 CS are the best cars in BMW’s range at the moment. And even the strandard M3/4 Comp are not far back
Raz, you nailed this review! Remember when the GT-R came out and everyone said it’s too heavy, too ugly has too much tech? And now it’s everyone’s favorite car. It’s the same case with the new M5. I can’t thank BMW enough for giving us petrolheads another chance of owning a TT V8 in 2025. Amazing car, looks amazing and most of all sounds amazing!
Bad comparison. 3900 pounds is heavy but 5390 is insane. It's also not everyone's favorite car. I and many other own and prefer the R32 and R34
@@itdobelikedat4202it’s a very good comparison. The number of the weight is irrelevant because at the time the GTR was heavier than it’s predecessor.
@@gaara4667 okay but 2,5 tons is literally truck weights, you dont associate Ford F150 with an M5
Love Mr. AMG. The M5 remains king in an ever changing, warring world. Kudos BMW M (Division). Never relent, keep to your guns.
❤❤❤
These 3d analyses are incredible. Better than those on the official manufacturer websites.
A couple opinions as a BMW fanboy and F10 owner: At this weight level, with room to spare by putting the battery in the floor, there is no argument against giving it a DCT. If the new M235i gets one, shouldn't any full blown M car get it too? Also as you said, the hybrid system adds ~ 4-500kg. Had they opted for no electrification, or even a smaller and lighter battery pack, I think with a just a bit more tuning trickery and ECU mapping making "only" low to mid 600 bhp, it would have been a drastically more dynamic drive, especially with a DCT. Regulations be damned i suppose. Still, I'm happy this exists in this day and age and excited to see what the touring will be like.
A lot of DCTs struggle with high torque figures
@@maheenjillani Yes, but Tremec's own DCT sits comfortably at 900 NM. I'd take less torque over a more engaging gearbox any day.
I was waiting for this review from this channel. From following a number of channels, Raz is one of the best reviewers of M cars ever. He really lives up to "Removing prejudices Before Race".
Most surprising thing you said was that the steering feels light (in sport). I always run my F90 in comfort steering and still feel it’s too heavy under 35 mph.
Hoping the LCI Comp version of this adds back Full Leather, Massage & more interior and exterior color choices. Then, I might consider the move. That and we’ll see if the styling grows on me. Right now, it’s “Meh.”
I always run my F90 Comp steering in comfort too, anything else and the feel disappears altogether. I don’t have any issue at slow speeds though. For me the Touring will be potentially decisive when I decide to change, but like you I will wait for an LCI/Comp whatever before I do anything. I do like Isle of Man green though 😂
I own a tuned F85 that has little more HP then G90; it’s wild how well BMW can make heavy cars move, its mind bending. I never thought my X5 M would be lighter than a M5 lol I bet this car is fantastic. Rear wheel drive must be slick!
Im on it, accepting fact that to save V8 we had to get hybrid and it's fine m. To be honest this electric range makes it even better in the meaning of day to day car.
I love the new camera cinematics with the sliders, and the color looks so good!!!
Great Review, Alot of people hate to see the weight numbers but overall, itll be worth the hybrid setup for long term use. its truly a great car in every way.
What's pretty crazy is the residual value of this compared to an M3 Comp on a lease. Despite the price difference, their residuals after 36 months are nearly identical. Goes to show that the M3 is a pretty compelling package and will save you some pain when you go to trade it in.
I'm sold. Sold on waiting a few years, paying off my G20, and getting one of these used....but still sold!
Think it looks great, but there’s definitely going to be a CS version, 800hp and 150kgs lighter, absolute missile
Yeah the original plan was for this M5 to have 862 hp to beat the AMG 63 S E-Hybrid with its 831hp so maybe the competition and CS will do all that..they need obviously to greatly reduce weight though for the upgraded versions..hope they do a version even above the CS though, like an M5 CS-R or whatever, to compete with the power of the Lucid Sapphire ...they need to punch way above 1300-1500hp to do all that...and remember we haven't even seen yet the tri motor Taycan GT which should have 1500hp or the quad motor Tesla S and Lucid Sapphire..the quad motor Model S should have over 1600hp and the Lucid Sapphire should have over 1800hp...so the M Division needs to very truly focus on reducing weight, improving ride and build quality and up the power to compete with the ever faster and faster high end EV sedans and AMG's...
The animations in your videos are - NEXT LEVEL! 👍
Judging from how good the “normal” M5 is I can’t imagine how over it is for the competitors when a competition/cs version comes out.
Might just keep my m3 cs, thought about a touring m5! Really not sure. Hybrid or not....wait for the m5 cs ✊️.........
Touring is way more practical and fits way better with it's thinner rear.
Like me... I'm keeping my M3 xDrive tuned to 630 HP and waiting for better models.
Couldn’t agree with that conclusion more - fantastic review!
Hard to talk about “bang for buck” when here in the US a used F90 LCI is 65k, a pre LCI + iDrive 7 is like 50k (2020), and it’s 45k for a pre LCI (2018-19).
For $100k, which is still less than MSRP of this, you can get a AMG GT63s and give it a RennTech 1000hp kit… idk man. It’s a little pointless to pay more money for less performance. Unless you like eating the hit of 30% depreciation to say “I hAvE a NeW car” then I guess to each their own.
Btw: M3 became the best M car out once the G80 xDrive dropped
My feeling is that the 0-100 figure doesn’t really matter. You’re going sub 3.2 secs, but remember that the market is different.
The M5 for me is an adult family’s supper saloon/ grand tourer.
My key points are as follows:
1. 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration times aren't the only measure of a car's worth.
2. The M5 is positioned as a comfortable, family-friendly grand tourer.
3. M3/M2 models cater to a more performance-oriented, youthful demographic.
BMW for me has successfully segmented and differentiated this car from the rest of their offering. Perhaps its CS sibling will deal with the M3/M4 market. The rest of us may just want the power and the comfort. We won’t miss its “chuck ability”
For me they’ve done the following just the way I like it:
1. M5: Emphasizes comfort, luxury, and everyday usability.
2. M3/M2: Focuses on raw performance, agility, and driving excitement.
This distinction:
1. Allows BMW to target specific customer profiles.
2. Creates a clear product hierarchy.
3. Enhances brand loyalty among diverse customers.
Let’s remember the subjective nature of performance metrics.
2. The importance of considering market context.
3. BMW's ability to balance performance and practicality.
I just wished the Rear end and lights looked better. They look too generic. I like the side and front though. The weight at over 5000lbs is nuts.
This car looks great, especially in the darker hues. Isle of Man green and this Purple... Chef's kiss.❤
been looking forward to this one! Great work as always Raz
Thank you! ☺️
Love how it looks, hate the hybrid and no buttons.
That colour is just perfect , this and grey !
The amount of work and thought to this bmw generation cars is insane. Bmw is a Top dog 🎉
think i may buy this when they become 12 months old second hand...love the hybrid mix for city driving but still having a v8 for the big trip blasts
For the most part, weight is still the enemy!
this was the review i was most looking forward to great job breaking everything down
Didnt know you had a boat license
🙄
Great review as always. The estate version of this thing will be a nightmare to manoeuvre around our tiny underground car parks in the UK.
Great review as always. Real world reveals are exactly where this man excels. It just looks heavy. Doesnt mean it as bad as the comments. Dont think it will grow on everyone though. Its a hard one to settle on. But still decent. MR AMG is now MR M!
Great review. The hate this car gets will wear out eventually when all the F90 owners finally bought it and the ones that can’t afford it found a new car to hate. It’s a ridiculously amazing machine and could well be the new bar for a whole new era of cars.
To be honest the design is growing faster than first thought.... however something still needs to be done about the out of place rear diffuser boxes sitting above the exhausts. Then slightly lowered with some aggressive concave wheels like the m6 gran coupe will finish it off. The battery will no doubt be a concern for someone looking to buy this used? Wonder what the bmw warranty will be for that. Performance wise seems we have reached the pinnacle since the f90. Saw the video of this side by side with f90 and that shows how far this has actually come, can imagine will be more in the flesh. The weight shouldn't be a concern as m5's aren't tracked anyway. The price then makes it a no brainer over its competitors.
You should use a separate, mono mic for the monologue. Some of your cameras have a different mic setting and your voice sounds like ‘remove Vader befo racing’. Still, love the material 🍻
Great review Raz 👍 All it needs now is an Akrapovic exhaust. And it may be heavy but at least it still has that wonderful V8.
Looks like an 05-08 5 series. Fav body style and that purple 💕
Never been crazy about BMW's but I really like this one.
What a world we live in when £110k is the bargain of the class! That being said, another great review from someone passionate about a car's character. And that's a crackin' colour!
Even though the car camouflages the weight like magic, the tires has to handle the weight. Even the G80 M3 struggle's with its weight on track, and melts the tires after 2-3 laps. So for driving on the street, yes this car possibly works great, but tracking it on the weekends, that's another story, and would probably cost you a set of tires in 5 rounds:-)
true but honestly speaking i do alot of track days and i very rarely see m5 on track its mostly m2 m3 911 gt3 caymans and older jdm cars like honda civics and all the current gr sports car lineup.
this guy animations is next level ✌
The F10s real successor. Looks so much better than f90. I’m digging this new understated styling language 👌🏼
Super review, I think you have nailed it.
LOL, points for the Shrek onion reference - one of my fav moments from that movie - it'll be cool to see how this car sells. It was fun seeing some of the reviewers going 300 km/h on the Autobahn (esp the guys from TheStraightPipes). But chai and RBR on a Sunday morning (late to these reviews), is a pretty great thing.
It s stunning, it has a wagon version, it s v8, it s not overpriced....
This car is just a W
Proportionately it's too tall and narrow, even with the fender flares. It's probably to accommodate the battery packs. I'd rather it be ICE and sit lower in height.
Yea but that’s the problem when they use the same 5 series platform for both ICE and EV cars, the ICE has to compromise on looks so the EV could fit batterie’s underneath
@@SD_TG exactly. What's best for an EV platform isn't ideal for an ICE platform, and vice-versa. They should be separate builds but from the ground up.
So basically u need to pay 1k at most for some lowering springs .. not that hard
The car is almost 2 meters width almost the same as a big Range Rover. How much wider do you want it 😂😂
@@G82Watts the ground clearance as is is only 4.5 inches, lowering further is not a realistic solution to its tall and narrow proportions.
Since it’s now a hybrid, not reintroducing the V10 is a huge missed opportunity, since the hybrid system would reduce both emissions and fuel consumption. Also, AWD should’ve been optional, not standard with RWD mode.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 great video!
AWESOME review. The car looks really modern and still typical bmw.
I hope it looks better in person because I'm trying really hard but it seems like bmw lost the plot completely.

@@vindowmaker58191. It's my opinion and 2. Wasn't going to watch a 29mins video of a car that I'm not impressed by 🤦
I know that it's a bit of an Apple or Oranges comparison, but how does the E53 AMG Hybrid that you reviewed earlier compare to this. Not just plain speed, 0-60 etc. But as a fun, practical daily commuter. Does that feel better in that capacity? Just as good? Not as fun?
The weight is overstated. It’s lighter than the X5M and X6M and those things feel unbelievably nimble and light
I like that purple I think bmw looks better than most of the amg's and the audi's look like a kia so for the people who can't afford one and talk nonsense, for a person who owned many Bmw's I love how that machine looks its beautiful in that color or the yellow people dont know it actually looks better in person filled with technology to keep you discovering new things about your car
I think it looks brutal. The only thing I don't like are the (optional) black and red seats... and yeah the weight but nevermind. Still it'll grow on most people like the g80 did
You can't leave that lion around here, mate.
0-60 in 3.1 secs is rapid even with the weight it doesn't even matter

I Love this next Gen M5. It works for me.
I've been waiting for your review since yesterday when videos start popping up on youtube about this car
Yes to all that. But can you imagine all this technology with a car weighing the same amount as the old one, how fast and agile it’ll be? We don’t need SUV size sedans.

I know the hybrid port is there, but I really wish it had the side gills
Its locks are growing on me, colour is awesome
Absolutely spot on, commuting in the F90 is such a waste of performance and fuel, the hybrid system makes so much sense, especially in stop / start traffic; steady away when you're off to work, full throttle when you find a decent stretch of road. Plus, BMW M5 and value for money, you'd never have put that in one sentence, but it really is!
what about when the batery ends and fuel consumption double F90
Who wants this hybrid as a second hand after 3 or more years.
At first I hated the style of it. Then I said to myself: wait a minute.... It looks like a 2024 e60 and I started to like it. At the moment this car looks amazing to me.
That m5 museum is insane 🤤
Lets get this fact out of the way, BMW M5 owners are not looking to save money on gas/petrol. If you can afford a M5, driving EV mode to save money on gas is not high on a typical M5 owner wish list. They prefer driving dynamics (performance, light weight) in a sedan. This is why I have read the next M3 will have an ICE and no hybrid because of this very reason.
Last, I heard of all the noise about M5 owners do not track their M5s, (I track my '22 M5 Comp a few times; if that is the case, how many M5 owners use 717Hp on public roads?
It's nothing to do with saving fuel. Although that is a huge positive..nobody in the world would want to pay more, despite being rich. Infact rich people tend to be more scatty. There's a reason why they're rich...they're smart with money and really efficient.
The real reason for the range was to evade the EU regulations so it can pass off as a legitimate hybrid car...that saved it and allowed it to have a V8
@@ertugrulbae46 True regarding the EU regulations.
My feeling BMW should have made the M5 with pure ICEs for markets without the regulations, after all, U.S. does not get some models that is offer to other markets such as, diesels, M3 Touring, and stretched 5 series (China only).
@@rcauthen324 That's what I thought as well. Have an ICE model (maybe with mild hybrid like the M340i) to satisfy the petrolheads, and a fully electric twin that can actually take the fight to other EVs like the Taycan, Plaid, E-Tron GT etc.
Ford is using this very strategy with their EVs and the traditional GT/Dark Horse coupe. The EV sales satisfy government regulations by reducing Ford's overall fleet emissions, and this gives them leeway to make the "dirty" Coyote V8-powered Mustangs that enthusiasts love.
@@drjk7565 Agree!
@@rcauthen324 That being said, I do tip my hat to the M engineers for trying to make this work. It's like an actor who's been given a crappy movie script, but still dedicates himself to the role and ends up becoming the only good part of the movie (not to mention earning a few award nominations).
It looks slightly better to me now, but I’d still take the F90
If you can afford it this will be an epic car in 3-4 years time when depreciation has had its effects.
This is greatest bargain car ever
Which to choose? M5 or Panamera Turbo?
That thing crushed rocks driving away at the end of the video lol
Got my M5 competition today
Raz, in the past you spoke about Taycan depreciation, but by the time you spec one of these up to £130k, you’re going to be losing over £20k a year in depreciation, so there’s very little ‘saving money’ 21:33 running it on electric. P.s. BMW U.K. calls it a saloon, not a sedan.
Damn I love this new M5 😍 reminds me of a modern and angular e60
