Thanks Joe. As I read someone else say recently, I am increasingly disenchanted by new cars but this is the first time I have looked at an M car and thought “no thanks”. As Joe remarks, there is much blame to be laid at the feet of governments and regulators who are tying car companies in knots. But, equally, I cannot find anything aesthetically pleasing about this enormous vehicle. And then there are the bolt on screens for which there is literally no attempt at integration into the form of the dashboard. Similar comments from Clarkson recently and Harry M. Feels like peak car for petrolheads is now in the rear view mirror. I am sure this M5 is highly capable and undoubtedly faster than anything I have owned from M division to date but I’d take any of their previous cars over this 😢. Which seems so sad given we finally get an M5 Wagon - I should be remortgaging my house for one but no…
BMW have been expanding for 60 years & setting records by going into niches & not repeating themselves, this continues pushing that envelope, enjoy it, 1 & done before BEV. V10 had 200 miles range.
Regardless of government regs, the elephant in the room is that it's ugly. Especially compared to the RS6. Even compared to the M3. This car is even more lego than the M2
@@R8andGT3Fan most definitely. I'd love an E61 or E34 M5 wagon, not crazy at all about this one. I have owned modern M cars and found them a bit soulless
Let’s be fair. It’s still mega. Not a single owner will be disappointed with their purchase. I’d love one (considering it depending on markups in the US).
Porsche tried harder. BMW was super lazy with this new M5. They could've done alot more to shed weight, instead they just plopped the XM drivetrain in a sedan and called it a day.
Great review and Think most people are now not paying attention anymore to the weight of the car! It’s the world upside down, but this thing is cheaper then the M3 here in Holland
Great episode it mean looking car long live the V8.I can’t wait for you to test drive the brand new Porsche 911 Carrera T 2025 I think it will be a belter.
Joe - I have an M5 Touring ordered - being delivered in Feb from Hungerford BMW (Brilliant dealership). I am a little concerned about the width - I love the ability to tow though. Would you be tempted by the M3 Touring over this or is the M5 Touring all round a bit more luxurious/good for long miles and substantial? I currently drive a Defender and think the width is pretty similar but will seem more pronounced in the M5 Touring as less visibility being high up and more speed! My other option is keep the Defender and just get a proper Sunday car like a Porsche or Caterham.
It seems you’ve missed the news somehow. There won’t be any Competition models for any M cars in the future. So there will be just M5, M2, M3 etc etc. Also, just in case you missed it, it seems B58 or M40i/40i models will be mild hybrid or phev so they will be called M50(the “i” will be dropped for their ICE cars). The new generation X3 with the third generation B58 is called “X3 M50” for example.

Great idea driving it hard with an agile little Porsche kind of silences the "oh its to big and heavy" lot when it's sitting there with a Porsche. Also how good do those tyres look ❤
Here is where i disagree about the weight issue. BMW made this cars wheelbase longer (3 cm) and the car over all much longer (10cm !!!) and overall bigger than its predecessor to fit in the battery of the all electric BMW i5 in the floor between the axis. This is a huge compromise for the ICE/Hybrid models and the M5 that are unnecessary long and wide, making them at least 100 kg heavier than the combustion model 5-series has to be just to share a platform with the electric i5. Also BMW could easily shave off another 100-200kg by giving the M5 the M5 CS engine with 635hp instead of the standard M5 engine with 585 hp. The added 50hp could be used to make less powerful, lighter and more efficient electric motors, which in turn would allow them to put in a smaller and lighter Battery pack and still achieve the same total power output. If we are being conservative here, BMW made the car at least 200kg heavier than it needs to be just due to platform sharing with EVs and focusing too much on the electric motors to deliver power, instead of prioritizing the V8 making more power. They should have been smart and looked at Porsche, they prioritized the ICE engine and made the Hybrid in the 911 super light and only to assist the ICE.
The ICE/EV platform-sharing will be the absolute death of driver's cars from BMW. They're already committed to sharing a platform between the next M3 and the EV "M3" (which they better at least call the "iM3" or something to signify it's lameness). It's probably part of the reason even the current M3/M4 gained so much weight (and the M2 by relation).
Paltry little 60l fuel tank is going to make for a tediously short range on long-distance touring. I still use an F10 (80l) to drive across Europe and back regularly, the 68l tank in the F90 was one factor which put me off renewing. This is really disappointing.
Everyone gets why they had to make it hybrid and why that adds weight, but it’s the extent of the weight and the seemingly complete lack of effort to reduce it that bugs people. The new M5 has an 18kwh battery which should typically weigh about 200kg. So why does the car weigh 500kg more than the previous one?!
2.5 tons. What the fck has happened to BMW ! Its not agile and no steering feel ?? Pointless in my mind for an Mcar that weighs as much as my X5 just a blunt numb missile.
I am sorry, but your claim that BMW had to do an M5 because of EU regulation is thin. BMW is not purchasing carbon credits; it already defined a strategic pattern for decarbonisation a while ago, and it is not a relatively low-selling vehicle that could hamper that. They probably decided to go for the plug-in because they already had it developed with the XM (another miss). Overall, it is just a bad car. It's not suitable for track days, and if you are buying it for outright highway speed, you are better off with the 550e, which is already too powerful to be exploited every day.
Isn’t it a huge pity for car enthusiasts that a bunch of car hating, Nanny State bureaucrats (many unelected Gravy Train staffers) have ruined, are ruining, cars and manufacturers alike. Enthusiasts downhearted and employees increasingly jobless as costs rise, prices skyrocket, sales fall and factories close.
BTW on the theme of all the legally required but mostly dumb settings that most drivers will switch off every time they start the car, have you seen Matt Farrah’s comment on his Audi A3 test? That they. “stink” and he prays they don’t impose the nonsense in America.
"They would have to pay massive fines". Oh come on man, don't go the propaganda route. BMW has more than enough pure electric sales plus bought air pollution quotas from Tesla to offset any kind of small scale V8 production. Plus the majority of their sales are not even in Europe. In USA they don't care, in China they don't care, neither does Japan. At the end of the day it's just an excuse and that moronic push for technology instead of actual engineering from Mercedes/Audi/BMW. The sheer fact that when the new S class was presented, the CEO of Mercedes words were: "This is the sportiest S class ever". Who gives a damn about sport in S class?
It's a SUPERCAR, BMW M have never made anything like it & never will again, it has NO COMPETITION. A century ago this would have been a Duesenberg, Lawrence of Arabia off-road Rolls, V16 Cadillac, SSK, fwd. Cord. Because it's not built for trolls or journos all the more reason for it to exist. Lame 1 thing this tank is NOT!
They DO NOT have to build these cars. See what Porsche is doing with their new electric system. You can put newer and best (lighter) batteries and use lighter structural components to bring the car's weight down... But it's expensive, so they make a fking boat. Disgusting. Thanks for taking the time to reply mate.

been waiting for this review - can't wait to take delivery of the touring
Go on Joe!
Its such a shame that bmw didnt make the F91 M5 touring and F81 M3 touring those cars looked so much better than these current cars
The only pro you get as a touring is a rear window wiper-THATS IT.
