    I just wanted to jump on here to firstly say thank you for putting this step by step guide on here, with one observation that while I found it easy to follow along, you need way more buckets of water than initially led to believe from the material list screenshot, it just took a few trips to a nearby water source.
    Secondly I wanted to confirm for anyone still wondering that this does indeed work perfectly well with 1.18 on the windows 10 bedrock version, I only had one minor glitch with one of the kelps not floating to the top but a quick dive down to where it was stuck with a bucket of water to manually create a water source block fixed the issue.

    • @ironjawedangels2812
      @ironjawedangels2812 2 роки тому +1

      To be clear, to fix that issue you dove down and placed a water source block at the very bottom of the problem row? At the level the piston is on? Or a different level? Not sure where the issue is coming from

    If youre having issues with the kelp floating the most likely issue is the water in the farm isnt source blocks yet so try using the kelp you have to make all the water source blocks in the glass area so the kelp can rise. once thats done all the kelp should rise and you can test it by throwing blocks into the water and seeing if youve got them all as source blocks.

    This farm works up to a point, but is very inefficent, almost to the point of being bad.
    The pistons keep irregularly displacing the water source blocks, turning them into fall water. Because of that 1 out of 8 kelp stays at the bottom. Sometimes more sometimes less.
    Next up is kelp growth. Since everytime you cut kelp, it gets a new random maximum height between 2 blocks and 28. There are always stalks that reach their maximum (low) height and then have to wait ages to get cut. Especially if the kelp keeps evading your sensors. Also, if you only make 3 sensors there is a very real chance that all 3 plants in front of them decide to stop growing after a block or two. Which brings the farm to a screeching halt. Which happened to me and I even had five Observers (real bad luck).
    Besides, you can make do with a third of the height and skip most of the building materials aside from Water, Pistons and Observers. If you make more then one row and stagger them, it can get way more efficient.
    It does look nice, but maybe needs a little bit more work to be worth the building cost in survival mode.

    Be nice if you mentioned if this was Java or bedrock for new players. Sometimes redstone farms aren't cross compatible and when I was starting out there was nothing more frustrating than gathering all the resources, building a farm from a tutorial and not knowing why it doesn't work because the content creator never made it clear it was Java or bedrock. Just a thought. Couldn't find it anywhere in the description either. Anyway, great vid, and thanks for the tutorial.

    Thanks for the idea. I've never used kelp as fuel before. Curious about the efficiency so I did some math to compare it to coal.
    1 coal and 8 kelp makes 0.88 dried kelp block.
    Since 1 dried kelp block can smelt 20 items, 0.88 dried kelp block can smelt 17.77 items.
    17.77 items minus the 8 item smelt potential of the 1 coal required to make the 0.88 dried kelp block...
    gives a 9.77 item gain of dried kelp blocks over 1 coal block.

      There you go - Genius!

    • @superstimpak1768
      @superstimpak1768 2 роки тому

      Good math but at the end of the day you need to use coal/charcoal to start the prosses of making the kelp blocks. Then after you need to use the kelp to make more dried kelp... it's a slow start and I get that kelp blocks bruns 2.5 times more than coal and charcoal. But kelp blocks burn 0.25 times less then a block of coal. So just make a coal farm aka wither farm. (both of these farms kelp & wither require the nether, it's not really early game.)
      64 kelp block = 1,280 blocks in return. ( -576 from kelp total to make the next 64 block of kelp = 704 )
      64 coal block = 5,120 blocks in return.
      Not saying that Kelp farm is bad idea but there are better ways of smelting in Minecraft. Setting up a wither farm is hard work and takes a while... both require you to come back home and make the block versions. In the end I see more people make a spawn chunk bamboo farm so that no matter where they are it's loaded and running.

      @oodoodoopoopoo 2 роки тому +1

      @@superstimpak1768 - hmm, My comment was really only examining the efficiency of dried kelp block. Had nothing to do with whether there are better more efficient fuels (lava?).
      Not wanting to dive too deep I only examined the lower end of the range of the efficiency. I'm aware that once someone starts using dried kelp block as fuel, they'll probably use them to dry the kelp instead of the coal. Perhaps when stating the 9.77 item gain over a single block of coal I should have added the word "minimum". Either way, my math is correct.

    If your kelp gets stuck at the top then sinks down check the very top row of water above your kelp isn't water sources and they're flowing. If not destroy them and replace. Be careful only to place water every other block so they don't become sources. Look at the video and you should see flowing water lines.

    It's actually a whole lot easier to just plant a bunch of kelp in a riverbed (the new 1.18 beds are wider) and periodically go and harvest what you need from it manually. If this machine only yields 3.5 stacks, it is definitely not worth it. I can collect anywhere from 15 - 30 stacks of kelp from my riverbed kelp farm in a matter of 5 minutes. Then I throw it into my furnace array and have dried kelp block in a matter of 20 minutes.

    • @voxorox

      The point of an automatic farm is that it's *automatic* as in you can just let it run while you do other things. This farm can be made bigger, and could be improved a bit in efficiency, but it runs by itself, that's the point.
      Use the river for a squid farm instead.

    Wouldn't bamboo farms be a more efficient and simpler fuel source? Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the game and kelp needs to be cooked into dried kelp then crafted into dried kelp block before being used as fuel. And dried kelp block is not a very cost effective fuel if you are not going to use its full duration like smelting only 2 pieces of iron will consume an entire dried kelp block that could potentially smelt a lot more.

    I tried a farm similar to this in 1.18 but the problem i had is that the pistons get rid of the water source block so if the kelp lands at the bottom, it wouldnt rise to the top and then it would despawn. Maybe losing some kelp is acceptable to you, but I didn't like it, I mitigated this by using a different water setup and sadly way more hoppers.
