My uncle was a Presidential Scholar. He was a POW in the Vietnam War, has done important translation work for the Northern Thai and Northern Lao. Never went to college though. Amazing man. I think he met two Presidents because when he was freed from the Hanoi Hilton the country gave the survivors a hero’s welcome.

Being gifted in a world that values mediocrity and often celebrated democratic (aka "tyranny of the majority") thinking is not an advantage. It is a distinct disadvantage given basic human nature as well. Humans tend not to like things that they dont understand and they certainly dont usually like people that they perceive might have an advantage in understanding them.

I FEEL this so hard. Once I went to get my PhD this is what I was confronted with. I felt so cheated in that I thought I'd be given the room for creativity and intellectual growth, however, was surrounded by what I perceived as meritocracy. This was possibly the most sad 5 years of my life. I need to be around more people like me to be happy and fulfilled intellectually and emotionally.

Exactly, goals are what I set for myself and achievements are some externally set or highly visible things that others may be impressed by. (I am an "underachiever".)

So many of these talks on giftedness are about the researchers lives and how they got "the idea", which is of absolutely NO INTEREST to the people who want more information on giftedness.

Sounds interresting, but this lady speaks way too fast for my non english native ears. Subtitles would have been of great help cause its obvious that she speaks with too much passion too slow the flow...
