The difference between me and you and the other pros is that you guys do it as a job and I do it as a hobby. Even with talent I will never be able to catch up if you practice 4-6 hours every day and I cant. But for now I do it for fun and to relax so it is ok.
@@chopholtz4950 Dude was just pointing out doesn't matter how talented you are if you have a full time job and can't practice four to six hours a day. There's a reason professional musicians practice that much.

Dude, this is SPOT ON advice! Thank you so much for opening up and being vulnerable enough to call yourself out on this. I am guilty as charged as being a "bad student" for probably most of the time I've played anything... Ask most of my teachers (praise their patience haha) The last few years I've learned these lessons the hard way and it put me in the practice chair with a new attitude and on the stage with a healthier mindset. You rule!

Generally I don't have any problems with patience - completely relearned guitar playing after a break of 25-years, that's more than a decade ago. However, time to live is limited, so don't be too patient 😁

Justin, your content has made me fall back in love with guitar. I won't go into a whole story about it, but I am THAT bedroom guitarist, the one who's played for years but whose skill barely reflects it because I haven't had a dedicated practice routine for years. I'm that guitarist who skips simple licks and essential solos because he thinks they're beneath him, because he impatiently thinks he can learn solos way out of his league, and who puts the instrument down when he inevitably gives up on it. Your brilliant advice, lessons, and exercises, your immense knowledge and detail, your constant emphasis on patience and slow progress (for fast playing), as well as your endless enthusiasm and captivating delivery... all of this brought me back in, and now I'm playing songs I used to enviously dream about. Thanks dude. You're the best teacher I've ever had.

Aloha Justin! I just wanted to say thank you for all you do. I'm glad I found your channel. Just like many people have chimed in that they don't have the time to practice as much as they would like due to other obligations, I too am in that boat! I did have the time to play in a rock cover band up until last October, but we had a falling out as many bands do. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I realized I was averaging about 15 hours per week to the band with learning new songs, practicing, rehearsing, and doing an occasional gig and I was losing the passion for playing since some members wanted to change and play more pop songs, needless to say, the other guitarist and I didn't agree and conceded that people came to see us because we weren't playing what other bands around town were playing. Now on to my point. I was able to use my 15 hours the way I wanted and lay out a practice schedule, keep a journal, focus on this or that for a week, pick songs I've been wanting to learn and to my surprise, within 2 months I regained my love for the instrument and honestly felt that I had improved more in that 2 months than I did in the past 2 years! Life isn't perfect and I did go a couple days here and there not being able to play, but overall, the consistency, even if only 30 minutes per day, focused, is definitely the key. I was able to keep the consistency and the 15 hours per week, up until March 19th, then due to family health issues, I am down to about 6-8 hours per week, but still chip away at it. Things are getting sorted and I am hoping to get more time back. In the meantime I am enjoying trying to at least do your 20 minute daily workout as well as some of the other "etudes". I have always struggled with playing fast and accurately and still do, but working with your exercises has improved my 'synchronicity" a great deal! I actually feel like (as Troy Grady once said) that one day I'll wake up and it'll just click and I'll be able to play a fast run flawlessly! lol. I've already had some good days where I felt very close. Thanks again! I intend on purchasing your courses once I have more time and am able to devote the proper time and focus to them. Take care! Right on. It is incredibly hard to resist the temptation to go back to what you know and what you find easy. It's fun and sounds good. But it is also the perfect reason for hitting a plateau. The one idea I offer for you to consider in addition to focus, attention and patience (that you mentioned several times but did not explicitly call out) is to set goals. It kind of goes hand in hand with focus (i.e. it gives you something to focus on). And I believe setting goals based on a piece of music is way more powerful than artificial exercises that are not musical. It's rare that an exercise can be inserted into a song and make a profound musical statement, but if you are already starting from something that impresses you as a profound musical statement, it is easier to be motivated (because you know you will be able to apply what you learn) and to assess progress. Maybe that's just me. I would be interested to know what you think of practicing music vs exercises.

I started playing 2 years ago and I'm glad I'm not falling in these mistakes but I have to pull certains things. I focus on math rock and metal, sometimes I play J Rock because it's a similar style and I love it but per example I have a hard time playing jazz fusion.
Being patient is probably my biggest sin, It annoys me to stay 3-4 weeks learning the same song day by day and sometimes I end up burnt out but glad I figured it out the song(not perfectly but I know what I do well and wrong) but I think sometimes you must change between learning songs and learning techniques, theory, etc.
exactly my problem, stuck for 15 year at the same level ! I never finish what i started and i play everytime the things i know when i get bored
Awareness is so important, you name it. I stubbornly paid too much attention to what Shred Gods are doing with their left hand (when they're right-handed), while almost totally ignoring the right hand 🙈
No surprise, my playing improved when I started focusing on the right hand 😂

Wahre Worte. Mit 46 hab ich nochmal nen Kick bekommen und meine Technik und das Üben komplett geändert, seitdem mehr Fortschritt in 1 Jahr als die 30 Jahre davor. Wenn es damals schon Lehrer wie dich oder Bernth gegeben hätte wäre ich jetzt ein Geigengott😂
