Give it a few more decades and make a show called “that 2000’s show.” Where Eric becomes the new red Forman Edit: it’s been over a year, and still, almost daily I get a reply telling me there’s a reboot.
One note since you mentioned “no drama”: Topher Grace was noted as often feeling excluded by the other 3 male leads by production staff and producers. Masterson, Kutcher, and Valderrama were genuinely close friends on and off set. They literally opened a bar and restaurant together. Grace wasn’t really involved in those relationships. Grace often feeling left out by his costars, minus Prepon who he built a close relationship with due to being in so many scenes together. It wasn’t active hazing or conflict so technically not drama related, but when you have someone who already wants to branch outside of their work and then add in a sense of not belonging or being “othered”, then it makes a lot of sense why Grace left the show.
@@langleyh8243 The movie wasn't even bad at all. It was just not what Raimi envisioned. And granted, Venom was writen really poorly in the movie, but that was the only thing he was forced to put in - and for something he didn't understand, it was alright. But Grace did a good job with the given script - Dude even had the balls to admit, that Hardy's Venom is much better. Not many actors do that.
Not really. Actors are professionals. When what's her name walked up that magical staircase into limbo (FAMILY MATTERS), Darius McCrary (EDDIE WINSLOW) said that he had no real sorrow for her. "That's the biz & she knew that." These ppl have their own lives, mgt. firms, agencies, assistants, handlers, etc. They see each other 12hrs/5 days, weekly. Grace just saw an opportunity to jump into movies.
Even though he might not be the most popular afterwards from the show because everybody else got so famous til the day I die I will always say I think he’s the best actor on the show The way his mannerisms are and how he actually acts like with a kid back then it’s just really really good I don’t think there’s anybody else in the world I could’ve played Eric Foreman better than Topher Grace
His reactions to other characters when he isn’t the focus really sets him apart as well. It makes perfect sense why Raimi chose him to play Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider Man 3 bc he probably wanted a mirror/foil to Peter in as many ways as possible. Topher Grace could just have easily played Peter Parker, the nerdy Everyman type. But I think that was lost a little bit in the execution even tho superficially it’s pretty obvious.
Eric Foreman was literally the Tommy Solomon of that 70s. He was awkward with girls, but he was always a good at heart boy in the end. Just like Tommy was.
They also changed so much at once donna other half is missing and after 5 episodes is already dating someone else. They build up Jackie and Hyde relationship just to have them break up and over it in 2 episodes. Hyde is married and over Jackie in 2 episodes. Red and Kitty were great on the show but the purpose of why all these above 18 year Olds are still in thier basement didn't make a whole lot of sense. Ashton Kutcher was a nice guy and tried to stay and help them transition but still felt worse when he left.
This gem from episode 8.06 sums it up. Jackie: Do you think something is going on between Donna and Randy? Steven what do you think? Hyde: I have a definite opinion on this... I don't care.
I'm happy you addressed the reality that despite not being a huge movie star a-lister, Topher Grace is more or less where he maybe wanted to be to begin with. Sometimes I get annoyed by how the media (and perhaps people in general) pretends that anything but becoming a household name in Hollywood is a career failure.
It’s easier for people to feel that way than to have to admit that even the 8th rung of television actors have a *MUCH* better job than almost every other person in the audience.

If Donna had left with Eric they might have been able to keep the series going, but the whole series was about their romance. They 'betrayed' that romance. They could have inserted a new couple, or moved the focus to other characters. It's too bad they wrote Donna's sister out after one episode. Having younger siblings ready to move into the lead rolls as older ones moved away could have been a way to more organically preserve the show.
That’s what happened when Ron Howard left Happy Days. They had other characters ready to fill the void. It’s one of the very few shows that survived the departure of it’s lead character for more than a season.

“Eric”, “kelso” and “red” carried the show on their back for 7 years. And when 2 of those people left, it’s obvious they didn’t have a back up plan to fill that huge void. Randy guy is a horrible actor, making Fez out to be a crazy ass perv and creating new relationships out of nothing in the final season was just awful
Not to mention they almost immediately paired Randy with Donna. They tried to make Randy a combination of Eric and Kelso and the fans rightfully shit all over it. It's their way of saying, Ashton and Kutcher have left the show and this is their replacement. At least Topher came back at the final episode while Randy disappeared.
It's never been more apparent how casting the right people can pay off tremendously. Topher Grace as Eric brought a timid, do-the-right-thing personality to the cast alongside the rebellious but down-to-earth Hyde, the clueless but popular Kelso, the slow but clever Fez, the spoiled brat Jackie, and the cynical but uplifting Donna. They're such wildly different characters, and yet their personalities compliment each other because they each have different perspectives that enlighten each other to what they're missing behind their own view of the world. Randy, by comparison, just doesn't belong. He's basically another Kelso, but since Kelso fills the role of being a dumb ladies' man, Randy has nothing else to offer. While Kelso manages to still be lovable despite his narcissism and flagrant misogyny, Randy is just an out of place jackass. It's not even that he was forced into the show to replace Eric; had they started the series with him, it would have been an entirely different show, and the chemistry of these wildly disparate personalities would be ever so slightly wrong because there's a duplicate of Kelso's unique perspective in the mix.

Eventually, the 70s were going to end which meant that the series - whose storyline took place between 1976-79 - was going to end also. They stretched three years into seven seasons. Even if Topher had not left when he did, the series would not have lasted much longer anyway.
never understood why they didn't try to venture into the 80s with the same cast. following the end of season 4 it should've been 1980 so at that point they should've retitled the show that 80's show with this cast. probably wouldve had new creative avenues. maybe the failure of the original that 80's show left the writers stuck in 1970s mode for the remainder of the series.

Your not missing much. Rewatching the final season, I felt bad for Josh Myers as Randy. It’s not that he didn’t do the part well, he just got the impossible task of trying to replace Kelso and Eric (arguable to the two most popular stars on the show) at the same time
I know that many people dislike Eric as a character but I honestly love his questionable behaviour and his weird but often genius lines. You cannot change my mind.
Seriously some interactions he has with red are just too good. Just the natural progression of being kinda afraid of this authority figure to poking them at times as he got older reminds me of how it works in real life 😅
Sounds like he had more sense than the other cast members. A big challenge for all teen shows is that teens grow up and graduate high school. And when that happens in dreary little suburbs, they tend not to hang around town. It wasn't realistic for that group of kids to stay in Wisconsin, getting high in the basement for years on end.
True, it also does not help that most popular shows clearly outstay their welcome and go on far longer than they should. In the last two season, the actors had so visibly aged, them still playing high school kids was comical.
@@floogelhornzzz4770True. Or good times after they killed off James the daddy. JJ became the complete focus, but it was never the same without hardcore James Evans threatening to always take his belt off and beat some butt. He was the Red Foreman of that show. After that the writing was bad, and the kids started obviously having more teenage issues like Michael joining gangs, Thelma’s problems with boyfriends, and many things that James was known for keeping in check.
Slightly diff...Winkler was scripted as a side character and Henry didn’t expect to come into fame the way he did. The fact his character stole the spotlight was infuriating to other cast members who were written in as lead roles. In THIS case it was the opposite, Eric Forman was the lead roll and the actor was becoming upset that side characters were stealing the spotlight (Kelso and Fez most specifically). Ego plays a huge roll with these Hollywood celebs, especially when they are already financially set, like you said. They are no longer there to make money, they are now on TV to feed their EGO and perceived value as a human. So, in short, Eric was getting sidelined by that 70’s show version of The Fonz and decided to find a spotlight elsewhere. Worked out to his benefit too, in the end he showed that the show only worked because of him, which boosted his stick as an actor imo...
@@Wallychans oh. I thought he hated Water Skiing over sharks. 😃. Didn’t Ron Howard leave Happy Days for the only reason to become a director? I mean nobody else on that show was worth watching after the two main characters left but there we were with joanie and cha chi being the main characters.

When are they gonna learn that when the lead actor leaves the show has to end? At least they realized josh meyers couldn't be Eric, no one other than Topher grace can
It’s okay if you know which characters are the most necessary. Grey’s Anatomy has so many characters that it didn’t destroy the entire show every time one left (except maybe Derek for me 😆). It was okay for characters on House to come and go as long as House was still there. But if the show’s character makes the show what it is, and the show has been centered around them the whole time, they need to end the series if that actor leaves. You don’t continue with The Office when the boss leaves! That would be like if Amy Poehler left Parks and Recreation, and they tried to have the show without Leslie Knope! And there’s nothing more insulting to an audience than a replacement character. Did they really think RANDY would make us care less about Eric leaving? Did they actually think we would just immediately like him and accept that he was a part of the group? And recasting should only be allowed on soap operas!
@@rmnffx never saw cheers. Law and order is a completely different kind of show, I'd say the case they're working is the main character, we don't really know anything about the detectives and we don't care
Topher Grace was maligned as up himself and thought he was better than his costars, but he’s been vindicated by history because he was smart to distance himself from the others and their questionable activities.
He was gracious enough after his contract ended with season six to do another season. It was obvious they had no idea what to do with the characters and especially Eric. They should have ended the series with season 7. But I understand why they continued, it was money and payed for a lot of people employees.
I remember trying to watch the episodes and hating them. It kind of like a betrayal to have this character that they make out to be perfect take over Eric's roles in situations. The audience liked Eric because he was flawed, and just like with Two and a Half Men it was like they were getting revenge on the actor by replacing them with the perfect person.
The show probably went on for too long. Actors leave when shows get too long. The creator really had something against Charlie. The show didn't work without him.
It was almost sickening how hard they tried to shove Randy down your throat. I remember when i first started watching some final season episodes and was just like *"WTF does everyone love this guy for? I don't get it?"* He was unfunny and all the other characters thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Terrible combo.
This was by far one of those shows, that'll never happen again. Just like the office. It can't be replaced or remade. It made us actually fall in love with the characters and care. Anyone who grew up with all this stuff, we are truly the lucky ones.
Topher has mentioned he is purposefully avoiding big budget riles. That he prefers plays or smaller roles. He took on Eddu Brock in Spiderman out of being a fan; and made an exception.
I love that Topher took the leap and left for his own ambitions! Hate how the rest of the show went... but it's not his actual fault. We loved this show for the characters, but mostly for Eric's point of view as you stated and when he left there was no show even if we really loved the other characters! But I have also loved him in everything else he's been in and yes even him as Venom!
He wasn’t fired. He needed the time off to film Spider-Man 3, in which he played Eddie Brock. And unfairly got some amount of shit for it. Sure he wasn’t Tom Hardy but he wasn’t bad
I thought the only dumb thing about his performance was his size, other than that he did fine, good motive, good voice and outfits, just should’ve had some muscles
I dont think he done anything wrong. But I think he should never of played Eddie Brock. And the writing for the character was really weak. They tried keeping it as basic as possible. And made Grace's acting look so average. Like there was not any depth to him. They just gave him an orgins story on bitterness with nothing in between. Not a lot you can really do with that. But I watched him in BlackKKKlansman and thought he was amazing in it. And it felt like the part he played was actually written for him he played it that well.
Eric is literally the only reason I watch this show.. he’s a character that nobody else can or even be anything like Eric. He was like meant for this show... I think all the actors/actresses were good but I think season 8 was a horrible season.. just felt forced
It's interesting how similar their characters are to their real life personalities, even if not direct and obvious. But just the people themselves. Topher Grace ended up being the actual good person with a good heart, but the actor who played Hyde (I know his name, just not giving his name space) ended up actually being the literal POS. Kelso and Jackie actually being romantically involved in real life and splitting up (just like the show!). The entire show was foreshadowing their future.
Randy annoyed the living crap out of me, totally put the nail in the coffin for the last season. It's like he was trying so hard to be funny and a part of the gang in every scene and just fell flat.
I can't blame randy, he had a Giants shoes to fill, 7 great seasons then suddenly everything changed an he had to makeup for lost Time, show probably would have been better without randy an just focused on the remaining group without Eric around but hindsights 20/20
Which is weird cause I actually liked him on madtv (sue me I was 13 at the time lol). And he’s Seth Meyers brother who was funny on snl. But damn I hated randy
The guy they introduced at the ending of the season Eric left I don't know why they killed him off. He would have been fine and much better than this bad acting Randy with the stupid Bee Gees hair.
That 70s Show would have been far better off not replacing Eric, but focusing on the others instead. Randy was a jump the shark moment. It's ironic they did an episode where Fes talks about the Happy Days episode that ended the show's life. History definitely repeated itself here. If I wasn't such a Mila Kunis fan I would have stopped watching as soon as they introduced him.
I was too young to pay attention to public discourse on it when it came out, but I've always felt like that movie gets seriously overlooked. I don't remember it that well but I did watch it 4 times in the week I had it rented so it must have been mad decent at least.
Surprised you didn’t mention the fact that the Laurie actress was changed in the later seasons due to her personal life issues and wasn’t mentioned or acknowledged at all when you talked about the producers considering doing the same thing with Eric’s character. I remember being confused for a while as a kid about who the knew actress was
I'm glad Topher made the decision he wanted, and appreciate all the time he gave the show. It just sucks that the last season of That 70's Show wasn't that good.
What I found the strangest, was that they all still hung out in his basement and his house with him not only gone, but they had some new dork in his place. If it were at least a character that had been introduced seasons earlier then maybe it would have not felt as weird. But they still should have otherwise just ended it instead of putting that new guy there like a replacement. I mean, 8 seasons in? It made it feel like the show was just dead.
Crazy how the media tried to convince me (before independent youtubers) that Topher was being a jerk, when really, danny turned everyone but topher into a Scientologist. He really was the only normal one. “Fez” is a statutory grapist

It’s also good how he didn’t get stuck in Eric Foreman’s persona. Other actors like the Seinfeld cast, Frankie Muniz in MITM, Matthew Perry from Friends, or Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter weren’t so lucky. I was surprised how his nice guy Everyman character from that 70s show went to him playing the villain in some of his work. Really good actor.
Based on this video, you'd think Suzanne Somers only job after leaving Three's Company was her stint as a Thighmaster spokesperson, but she had another successful TV show later on that lasted 7 seasons.
You missed how they actually introduced Erics cousin at the end of season 7 and the audience actually liked him but the actor then got a starring role in his own show. Thats what Randy came to life.
Uhhh if your talking about Bret Harrison's Character he wasn't Eric's Cousin at all as he was the Son of 1 of Red's Former Friends that is it! As the only person of Eric's Cousin was a few seasons back w/ Britney Daniels Character in the Episode "Eric's Hot Cousin" so nope ya got your characters confused!
Also, why I personally think Randy didn't work either was because, like you said, Eric was the voice of reason. In their group dynamic, everyone else, even Donna, wasn't as logical and cautious as Eric. The one closest to Eric in this regard was Donna, but she was more of a follower and that's why she often followed suit with the boys. However, when Eric went away, you still needed a voice of reason. In comes Randy, who's more of a himbo kind of type, a la Kelso, but also a la Fez a bit, because Randy and Fez both had their "dumb" moments, but they also had really smart ideas sometimes, while Kelso usually didn't. Because they still needed a voice of reason, they put Donna in this position, even though she usually only was the voice of reason when it came down to Jackie's issues and not with the boys. This way, because of the incorporation of Randy, they essentially changed the entire dynamic of the group, but also changed Donna's character as well.
What goes unsaid is that the writing tanked one or two seasons before Topher left. Originally it was amazingly good and at some point they flipped the switch and it turned into every other nondescript sitcom but this time vaguely set in a sometimes represented different era.
Pretty sure they literally killed the character if you remember the spray paint water tower or whatever it was where kelso got injured the guy they had to replace eric was there and fell and died lol

Grace made the right call. Frankly, the best episodes of the show were behind them at the time. I would have to watch it all again, but I think the first season was the best.
That 70s Show was often seen as being a kind of "Happy Days" rebooted for the 70s. Interestingly enough, Ron Howard also left that show to go on to bigger and better things and his character was the center of that series in the same way Topher Grace's was to his. Richie Cunningham was also replaced by another character also not unlike what happened with 70s. So the whole thing , though not planned in advanced, really did reinforce the whole "70s Show and Happy Days parallel-ism. ( Hyde = Fonzie and even moved in with the Foremans just as Fonzie movied in with the Cunnighams, and so on but that is a discussion for another time)
I always felt like they should have worked Lori's character into the group in the last couple episodes before Eric left having her replace the main character wouldn't have felt so odd and it would have made sense why they still all hung out at Eric's house

If they did an equivalent of that 70s show today it would be set in 2001.
@@langleyh8243 Well what is true that he basically left to make Spider-Man 3. He had scheduling conflicts and really, really wanted to be Venom.
@@langleyh8243 The movie wasn't even bad at all. It was just not what Raimi envisioned. But Grace did a good job with the given script - Dude even had the balls to admit, that Hardy's Venom is much better. Not many actors do that.
Its a good thing he didnt fit in with them since Masterson is a serial rapist and Valderama has a bad reputation for grooming minors.
Thank you! If only this clickbait clip would've done a fraction of your research, it might have been worthwhile.
Agreed.
I think the problem is that Topher didn't play Eric.
He WAS Eric
His reactions to other characters when he isn’t the focus really sets him apart as well.
It makes perfect sense why Raimi chose him to play Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider Man 3 bc he probably wanted a mirror/foil to Peter in as many ways as possible. Topher Grace could just have easily played Peter Parker, the nerdy Everyman type. But I think that was lost a little bit in the execution even tho superficially it’s pretty obvious.
B Luz yeah, he never stopped being Eric, in every movie. He didn’t really act, kinda did, but not really
Eric Foreman was literally the Tommy Solomon of that 70s. He was awkward with girls, but he was always a good at heart boy in the end. Just like Tommy was.
Holy shit. There wasn't a single comma, or period, or anything in that. I thought I was having a stroke.
They also changed so much at once donna other half is missing and after 5 episodes is already dating someone else. If Donna had left with Eric they might have been able to keep the series going, but the whole series was about their romance. They 'betrayed' that romance. They could have inserted a new couple, or moved the focus to other characters. It's too bad they wrote Donna's sister out after one episode. When Eric came back for the final episode, Randy was promptly shoved aside with little more than a cameo appearance.

I know that many people dislike Eric as a character but I honestly love his questionable behaviour and his weird but often genius lines. You cannot change my mind.

Who disliked Eric? Always thought he was perhaps the most relatable person on the show.

Your “weird” reason wasn’t so weird. He was financially set. Henry Winkler left Happy Days for the same reason.
A little bit of clickbait doesn't hurt

Not sure if the show has to end when someone leaves but it can be awkward.

An actor wants to pursue other projects. Yeah, that’s really weird.
Topher's timing and delivery was always top notch and he is so freaking cute.
What goes unsaid is that the writing tanked one or two seasons before Topher left. Originally it was amazingly good and at some point they flipped the switch and it turned into every other nondescript sitcom but this time vaguely set in a sometimes represented different era.
That’s because the two original creators of the show left after season 4
Most sitcoms run out of gas after the 4th or 5th season or so. There's only so many ideas you can do with the same premise and set of characters.
I will always rewatch and love That 70s Show.
I'm a simple man, I see that 70's show, I click.
This was a very well put together video, fantastic job my friend!
Also, remember that they introduced another character who was basically Eric 2.0 before Eric left but for some reason they killed him off.
Idk his name but wasn't it a rich gay fella that had a crush on Eric
i think he was supposed to originally replace eric once he left but the actor changed his mind hence why they went with randy instead
His name was Charlie. He was meant to be the new Eric, But he was offered to star in his own show The Loop as well as guest spots on other shows.
Pretty sure they literally killed the character if you remember the spray paint water tower or whatever it was where kelso got injured the guy they had to replace eric was there and fell and died lol
@@mothwinter lol he is probably the only cast member who died from falling off the Water Tower...it was even renamed The Charlie Richardson Memorial Water Tower.
Yea when Topher left it was like if "Corey" had left Boy Meets World too soon.
0:13 that is the face of an actor that played Eddie Brock on the Tobey Maguire's version of Spider-Man 3. Topher Grace!
I remember of him playing in Predators. Interesting if not a weird choice.
yep that cast of characters was something else
It is also one of the few movies where he does not act like Eric foreman.
I thought it worked pretty well. A psyco pretending to be a dorky nerd was basically just eric foreman in a different time line.
Not sure why but that character felt like more of the actual Topher Grace more than his Eric character. Sure hope I'm wrong about that.
"Follow your dreams" is the most dangerous thing to say. Yeah, he did that AFTER HE WAS SET TO LIFE.
Solid video. Thanks for the research and creating the video.
Topher Grace is a very underrated actor. I hope he surpasses his co-workers from that 70's show someday. I think he will, he just has to find the prefect role.
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are more popular along with Laura Prepon(orange is the new black) or Danny Masterson(ranch)
@random69e Danny is a real huge hit in prison...
Remember that *"BURN!"* Kelso image macro? Remember when everyone seemed to think that was hilarious? Remember when they were called "image macros"? Pepperidge Farm remembers
bro dodged a bullet by leaving this show full of predators
I admired "That 70s Show" when it was on, the last season was weird, and the finale to me was a letdown,Donna and Eric belonged together, and Fez and Jackie hooking up felt forced!Josh Meyers did his best, but he couldn't compete with the shadow of Topher Grace!Anyways, it was a great show!
Grace made the right call. Frankly, the best episodes of the show were behind them at the time. I would have to watch it all again, but I think the first season was the best.
Learning what we know about the actors now, its no wonder he left. Show was filled to the brim with nutcases.
“if you’ve spent seven years at a job you don’t maybe love so much” Jesus Christ dude you went straight for my jugular
Right? Fully attacked.
Yeah but the actress wasn't capable of continuing. She had a bad drug problem and unfortunately didn't recover
She literally died
I never was a constant viewer of the show but my God do I love it. One of those shows you just grow close to cause it was always on after school
Topher is probably my favorite sitcom actor. Reminds me of my best friend in middle school. He just looks like a genuine person. The goodest boy. Just like Elijah Wood and Tobey Maguire.
I actually heard that Tobey Maguire was/is pretty terrible towards women
@@nikki99beauty i’m gonna say you hate all men, and now that everyone’s seen it, should they just believe it? or should they need evidence to back up that claim?
Big Tobey maguire vibes
Topher Grace chose to leave the show. He was never fired. The show struggled without the likes of him and Ashton Kutcher, only to have both of them show up in the series finale.
I'd like to specifically applaud his performance in BlackkKlansman, a thoroughly phenomenal film.
Yes! It was really well performed. I don't know how to explain it but there was a certain coldness or stoicism that he brought to the character that is the perfect general feel that we get from those race extremists.
That movie was woke trash
You should make a video on why they fired Sherona from “Monk.”
I like this
I been thinking of rewatching monk
i'd def watch that
@@IanCookUS it’s 10/10 but I haven’t finished it yet.
I think you should do a show on how awesome monk is for such a low budget show. A masterpiece of talent over budget.
