How to purchase a used Honda Prelude. Things to check (5th gen)

- As a prelude enthusiast, just made a quick video of what to check for when purchasing a 5th generation preludes. (97-01)
Any question, leave me a comment I know all about these cars! - Авто та транспорт
My uncle who I used to work with before bought a honda prelude from a widowed woman for only $5k. Her husband passed away and she wasn’t sure what to do with the car. When I learned that he only got it for $5k, I was so envious. The car only had 10k miles on it.
That'd be worth probably 30k in the current car market
Fast forward to 2022 I’m looking at one with over 200k miles @ $4,500
@@gerry3RS wya i got one for 3500 if you want with 180k miles
@@matthewconner3948 Cali. Wya?
@@gerry3RS if you haven’t gotten one already and are patient you can usually find good deals with some time and effort. That’s a lot of mileage unless that motor was serviced regularly I wouldn’t pay that much. I picked mine up for 2200 with 219k on the clock and less than 100k on a freshly swapped motor. Clean as hell though and it was a few years ago so might be different now.
5:50 "I'm low on oil right now shit"
Ive owned 2 and ive never had a oil issue unlike most. Also on type sh's the front has 2 extra ball joint on each side. They also fail, on earlyer years due to recall. If you also add horsepower to a type sh you will blow your atts unit. You will need to swap out for a lsd or base model transsmission. Also there was usdm cars that came with leather seats optional from the dealer. For your sun roof how it hops, buy white lithum grease it fixes it.
How much HP can I go without blowing the ATTS?
I am a prelude owner also, 99 auto. Everything this guy says is true about these preludes, mine though doesn't have the water problem in the trunk which i was surprised by because my dad bought it way back in 01 and left it in a lot for about 10 years. If you ever plan on buying a prelude it is very fun. I got my car at 58k miles and drove it very hard for almost 3 years all the way to 68k miles and the transmission was done for. The rebuild which was done at aamco cost me $2200. For most this will be a deterrent but for me I love the car to death. If you want a prelude go with a manual autos just are god awful.
hondas manual transmissions are great, but the early years suffered from a synchro problem as you stated and it usually was from 2nd to 3rd (i found you had to just guide the shifter with a little more force and precision to make sure it stuck.) awesome video very informing.
Thank you for making the time for this video. Many things you talked about I didn't even know so it was very educational for me as a fellow prelude enthusiast. You have a nice clean prelude btw
Dude you said your oil level is ok?..uh no that's not ok..your about 2 quarts low man
It is my understanding he probably had an oil change due in a few miles from the time he recorded lol
Yeah it looked low. Needs to be between the two dots. If in doubt check that manual bro. Love the preludes.
Should be at the top dot\line...That shit needs a quart & a %!!!
Yea I began to start questioning everything he said after that. Your car needs oil dude
I loved my fourth gen i could go over a speed bump at 45 mph just fine
Lmao!!
Same.lol
Why 🤦🏻♂️
Yo i don’t think that it’s a good thing that you where curious enough to find out😂
😂🤣🤣🤣
Just picked up a 1999 5th generation up. Love the car. Mint interior and very straight body. Base model. Very smooth riding car that is very fun to drive. Thank you for this video. After I purchased this car I decided to watch UA-cam videos of common problems with it etc. Glad this video came up. I miss my 240sx but this will hold me over.
Yeah rwds are fun, but I hate how they are just impossible to drive in rain and winter. Prelude could be daily driven, but fast, reliable and handles like rwd.
Thank You for this video! There aren't many videos that tell you exactly what to look for in a Honda Prelude or just any care in general. (I will use majority of the information when checking out other cars.) Also your video is the latest one and I enjoyed watching and you have a nice voice.
thank you thanks for watching!
Very Helpful video, thank you for posting all of the things to look for. My Son just bought a base 97' as his first car and is very excited!
Thanks for the great video, looking at buying a 2000 SH and other than the standard used car stuff I wasn't sure what to look for. Hondas have a reputation for incredible reliability if properly maintained and now I know some of the known issues with preludes! Thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback, ill be getting a 5thgen prelude soon! Cant wait.your video is very helpful too btw
When I first rode my cousin's '00 prelude back in the day, I totally fell in love. I still want to get one if I get a chance. Thanks for the tips.
Great video. One elaboration on the RPM limiter, I found that (in my '99) if the engine is still cool and hasn't run in a number of days (oil has settled) the limiter will kick in earlier, as low as 6500. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to return to normal. Agreed, when tuned, you can rev it well past 7500, up to 8500 even!
Overall, this is an excellent car city or highway, comfortable on long drives, plus its timeless design will always catch an eye. Good job!
Thanks. I still miss this car some days. I think the guy who I sold this car to totaled the car. So it is no more there..
I have had two Gen 4 ludes with Automatic transmission and never had an issue. I had 311,000 on the first lude and 351,000 on the second. Never had an issue with transmission. I also don't burn a lot of oil. Bought my first one and loved it so much I bought a second one when a tree fell on the first one. Thanks for posting. I would love to have a gen 5 SH.
"Turning to the right" *points to the left*
I noticed that too lol
Did he say reverse was sixth gear going through the gears as well? Wtf? Lol
The fuel lines for the gear box?
@@nicholasdavidson5683 He probably meant special coolant lines, or maybe they had a separate circuit for the fluid pressure.....guy was probably just nervous, that's all.
problem what I am having Honda prelude rpm up down up down I have to maintain RPM from accelerater how is look like that's why I make a video but I understand your situation cant give me your email so I'm requesting you to tell me help me how I can fix that Or if you have a time you can see the video on UA-cam just type( honda prelude tell me) green color Honda prelude I know what I'm saying is funny but I don't have any other options to show you
Nice car! My brother had one of these and every time i see another Prelude they are always clean.
Hello, William. Thanks for this video. I am thinking of going Prelude for my next car, and this video is very helpful. My friend had the previous generation AWS car since we were in high school, I always loved driving it (even though it was an automatic).
Also I live in WA, so the tip about the leak is a good one!
If you live near Seattle, I can come along for vehicle inspection. I also have my own shop if you need any repairs
William Yu Hey that's cool, but it'll be a while before I buy a (good) car again. But it's in the cards! Thanks what's your shop called
No name. JUst have a shop that I work on cars.
I purchased my 2000 Type SH about three months ago, I have no regrets whatsoever getting it. It has a few things here and there that needs to be replaced, little things really. Despite having to fix them, I can honestly say that this is a car I would love to keep for a very long time (: I say it makes about 220 hp with the aftermarket stuff it has lol
Thanks William for this video. I'm thinking about buying a Prelude 5th gen (Euro spec) and your video is very useful !
I used to have the 3rd Gen with a 150hp B20 and 4WS... Ludes are awesome cars :) A bit in the Gran Turism / elegant category, higher class than a civic.
This came up in my reccomended after watching some prelude reviews. I was just considering one as a daily but now I definitely want one lol. Thanks bro!
Hello random underrated channel that will soon blow up
Did you end up getting it as a daily? It’s one of my favourite looking 90’s JDM cars and I might even get one in the future
@@sxmori haha wassup!
Awesome video, doesn't seem stuck up about his Honda like a lot of other people are. Good tips, been wanting one of these cars
thank you very much!
Cool video man. My lude has had half the problems you've said lol. The water in trunk wetting my backseats, shocks went bad and timing belt snapped
hey thanks for this walk around. im about to check out a BB6 this weekend possibly.
Sh model: best for autox or canyons
Base model: best for less 88lb that the sh's atts weights, in small words, less weight for a good drag
In my opinion, sh atts is the best way to go, besides, anyone can go in a straight line, so why not get a car with a great system that allows the outer wheel get good power while hitting a corner or curve, yeah its still fwd but hey, why not right? :) great video
Proud owner of 5th gen se. Love it so far, it took awhile to find it but best on budget fun to drive manual out there.
Can't beat an owner's review and this review was excellent 👍
Great video i have watched this 8 times over
Thanks man! Helped a lot my neighbor is selling a prelude and I'm thinking about buying it
Dude your Lude is so clean! I love it!
thanks william its so helpful i will use those tips for buying my first prelude!
greetings to WA from Germany/Berlin!
np good luck with it!
I'm seriously interested in getting a lude so this really helped !! Thanks man !!
Good video! 🇨🇦👊🏻
Thank you!

dude, i love this video. so informative. couldnt stop watching your video. can you upload more about preludes?
im buying mine tomorrow! thanks for the tips!
im jealous of how clean your engine bay is, but thanks for the vid!
I had a 1981 prelude, my mechanic loved it, easy to work on, I don't like the newer design. Also mine had a engine oil cooler which I believe made the engine last longer.
I got my car like this. And I do like the fact that the wheel matches the color of the car exactly.
Pretty sweet video! Good stuff!
Really excited picked up a 97 Prelude yesterday sitting out on lawn, with a for sale sign $1000. First one to see it, talked him down to $850. So far spare key and battery bought. Runs great 129k.
Wish i had your luck lol. Currently looking everywhere
Thanks for your prelude video, I'm thinking of getting one but was not sure if they are good cars. Thanks again bro
They are wonderful cars
found this after i bought the car -_-
Jake Blare mee too lol I just traded my t why for a prelude
Lool same and I think I have rear light leak problem ://
lol same yeah im not going to speak on that thooo
Same and I unfortunately have a ....automatic
Same! 🇨🇦👊🏻🙏🏻
Great vid, exactly what I needed!
Thanks for this I've been in the market for one
i bought a 99 prelude sh about 6 months ago and noticed that it was burning lot of oil i was using synthetic and i switched to regular oil recently and the car has not burned any so much thanks man saved me money.
Mine has 204,000 on the dash. Still drives great. Recently had timing belt and water pump. My biggest issue with my 98SHprelude is indeed the leaking trunk!
I live in Canada so I get the SE (Special Edition) with leather seats and carbon fiber trim on the interior :D They only made it for one year in 2001 and only in Canada.
Hey mate. Just curious what are the real prices for the Prelude's in Canada? In Europe they cost about 10k US $.
jeekooz Mine was $5750 CAD with a set of 18 inch rims and low profile tires but I'd say the average is about $3500 CAD
puffnpluky76 Thank you very much for this info. All the best for you, and for your Prelude too!
yeah and then if it's leaky you get moldy seats ...especially if you live in Vancouver... I found a lake in my trunk last year... no wonder my leather back seats were all white...
i have a SE aswell. Leather, heated seats, honeycomb grill
hey, first off great video... very helpful. and also I was thinking about buying a base prelude. I was just wondering if there are any differences in the body styles between the base and the type sh? thanks
Smut is not a sure sign of and engine burning oil. It's mainly tune related indicating a rich condition.
i guess so esp for cars this old. but technically if engine is burning properly there should be nothing on the exhaust tip. modern cars shoot out clean water.
Or someone tore off their cats.
I own a 3rd gen Honda Prelude '89 . Awesome car. I would love to own a 5th gen too, or at least try it out. But I've only seen one 5th gen in my country.
obxR mugen twin loop replica muffler. They sound very nice. It's one of those exhausts that is quiet and deep when you just drive around the neighborhood, but once you step on it it sounds veryvery loud.
Great video , you should do a video about things you need to know about a Honda prelude like cons and pros
Today I bought a 99 honda prelude.So far a good car, I like it.
Damn I love the sound of prelude... remind me of my first car (1984 Prelude EX )
Hey man, awesome video! Your Prelude looks awesome, you should do a walk around of the exterior and a better driving shot! It looks really hot and sounds healthy man, makes me want to go out and buy one tomorrow!
Hey man loved the video I honestly didn't even know about the tail lights and how water can slip in there. Appreciate the video. I'm looking into a prelude as a first car most likely auto and I wanted to know something. I've heard the auto tranny on the 2000 and 2001 model preludes are better than the 97-99 ones is it true or not? And what would you say is a good price and amount of clicks on the car and tranny? Thank you.
yes! I'll post a video of me just driving around!
Still driving my stock ‘01 Prelude SH w/ 140k miles. For the most part it has the little quirks you mention. Owned it 19 years. I would definitely say the transmission shifting has not held up the way I expected.
Thanks for replying so fast, ill probably go check it out this weekend, hopefully it has a clean title, I guess theres extra honda tax over here lol, everyone asks for alot more than kbb price here and theres alot of rust on most hondas here in wisconsin/illinois.
Just bought a 1998 year prelude (2,2 VTi). 186tkm, air condition, everything working, dark green color. Only paid 3000€ for it. :))) Also got brand new summer tyres and gas tank full. :)
Update.
5 months after I wrote that message some grandma crushed my Lude with her Peugeot...
Had to buy a new Lude: 1998 VTi-S ATTS with 188k kms on it. It's San Marino red and very beautiful!
Teqo7 I'm going to buy a 2001 tomorrow any tips to look for?
Which I exactly covered in the video. My car had the exact same problem. It's due to the taillight weather stripping
So I just got a 01 prelude with a f20b swap and its automatic. Today I drove the car about 15 min and when I tried to shift it into park, it didn't go past nuetral. I then put it into nuetral and turned off the engine. With the engine off, I put it into park and tried to start it and it didn't start... When I turn the car on, the lights on the cluster comes on, the radio turns on, and my ac works but when I try to start it, it just makes one click noise. Any help out there?
Hi friend i have a sh 97 the car was swapped to manual but the car sumtimes starts sputtering it happens not too often wt u think is wrong my friend gave me for free he couldn't figure it out the problem wt should i do to make thats stop
goin to Chicago this sunday to check out a 97 5speed with 112k thanks for the pointers
Cabin air filter and sunroof are good places to look for leaks too. Mine is missing the caf which caused the ecu to get water damaged.
This a pretty old video, do you still have the Prelude.
Notice your Honda leaks. Every SH I've ever looked at has a rear seal leak.
My 2000 SH w/77k does not use oil (no oily film at the tail pipe area) Presently, no known oil leaks at the engine.
One question regarding the air intake: I have the oil changer mechanics ask me each time if I would install a "cold air intake" over the stock. Any mod I've seen is like yours, pulling the air from under the hood but if I look at my stock filter assembly, the intake hose comes up from the bottom of the car, and I assume this is cooler air. What's your thought on this?
I was considering purchasing a 5th gen recently. White/light gray smoke was coming from the exhaust, is this what you were talking about with the burning oil? Or is it a coolant leak.
Hey Awesome video! What is that white stuff you used to seal up your tail light?
well some people said the grills were different, but it's just an option the design didn't change. But under the hood it looks different
So recently in my area it's rained a lot and my friend just noticed that the rear seats are soaked so I referred back to this video. How could I prevent the leak from happening and how should I dry the back seats, also will mold start to form if I don't do anything about it?
I own a 2001 automatic h22 and still running no problems,I have a automatic civic and prelude both are h22 and both never had one issue wrong ,ya the engine light comes on but its still dips like it did in 2001 .If you go 150 on a normal basis yes all cars can fuck up when you roll that dice on hitting high rpms 24/7.but if your a night time casual racer you should have no problems.
Just got a 98 prelude with 78000 KM, it's a beauty!
I just bought an almost mint condition 97' with 166k
It's got a leak somewhere on top , water goes to the cabin passenger floor. It's a 5spd manual ....purrrs and drives like a champ. Gonna take it in to the shop to get it checked out.
yes my mistake. they are the coolants and they connect to the radiators. They don't require any fluid change tho.
Nice video. I just purchased a 97 base model prelude its my first honda and i love it. The exterior and interior are clean i just plan on rebuilding my motor soon cause it has 170 k
Nice video man, I'm looking on craigslist to buy my first car and I was thinking about getting a prelude, especially to learn & practice driving stick. any suggestions/tips ? I've been looking at a 97' prelude for awhile now.
follow what my video tells you. Make sure it drives straight without any wobbling on highway
I have a 2000 Prelude and it's the base model but it has a rear spoiler! It's not on the build sheet from the window and I have no idea if it was factory installed or dealer installed. Any idea why this would be on if it's not a SH? The car is super clean with only 36K original miles. I'm the second owner and have had NO problems with the automatic trans! Mine doesn't use any oil since I use Amsoil products.
One sec the type SH did actually have a 4-speed transmission but those are pretty rare my mom had one and the dealer said to her that they didn't make a lot of them.
Go to local Oreily or Autozone to borrow an engine code reader and read the check engine light. O2 sensor usually doesn't affect the driving that much. I'm assuming one of your sparkplug isn't working. It can be the wire or distributor as well.
ty very much for making this video and giving me heads up i got a 01 prelude se td in mint shape stored in a shop its hole life very well maintained for 1400 he was asking 3k 230k anything i should know
I appreciate how he chose to make the review before picking up his sister. Driving with a purpose = very eco friendly lmao
i live in Vancouver and my dad's civic when it was purchased (used) has some water leak on that exact spot but later on until now, I don't notice anything anymore. Maybe because it was parked outside all the time? Now it's always in the garage. Speaking about transmission, what you've said about the synchros have been replaced @ 160xxx KM but my dad got it at like 140xxx km which isn't bad since alot of people say that's the sweet spot to replace those and the first owner actually learned how to drive a manual in that car so yea. But it did cost like $1700 since he considered to get new Clutch kit aswell .
thank you sir i have one , but don't know anything about car , so now on thank for knowledge ...
Restore: Engine Restorer (4 cyl) fixes compression issues and almost 'solves' problems with burning oil. I use it in my d16y8 (198k miles) and only have to add a quart of oil about every 1000 miles. And no, it's not one of those additives that gunks up your block. Very good product; thought I'd share.
I had a 93 h22a4 the only oil leak I had was in between the block and the oil sandwich plate. Just a simple 2.98 gasket. 30 mm nut on that. You'll want to use a socket. I used a little bit of Vaseline to hold the gasket in on a blind install. Liked that car. It was only fun at 7000 rpm lol.
Oil cooler o-ring right? I had to get mine replaced because I was losing a quart a week
Hey man I got a 2001 prelude base I really like the way your exhaust sounds. What is the name of it? I want to buy the same one, it sounds amazing. Please answer !!
well if it's been in an accident, you need to replace the frame. but if not, just go to any tire or allignment ship and get front wheel allignment
Just bought a 99 with 75k on it.. 5 speed base.. excellent condition.. picking it up tomorrow can't wait!
Surprisingly I haven’t had my base 5th gen break down yet and it just hit 200k miles but I don’t wanna jinx it because now it’s making a weird noise when I rev😭😭
William you are really talented man
I am Planning on buying a Prelude. How would you say they are mechanic wise and how good are they in the snow (5speed)?
is this the last gen if not what are the hp and trq in a 6th gen? also what are stock compression ratios i have a 56mm turbo how much boost is SAFE any help would be greatly appreciated thank you .asap
my prelude 98 sh is not engaging reverse, any Idea whats the problem?
Do the automatics have paddle shifters or just do you shift only on the gear changer?
Great site! Had to rebuild almost my entire front-end and used Majestic for everything but body panels/hood. They are located in RI so shipping could be pricey if you live on the other side of the country.
man this is awsome very informative, i wish someone would have made a video like this about g35s b4 i purchased mine
I knew a kid that had a 92 prelude, didn't burn a drop of oil,or at least not the way the 5th gen does. seems like the 4th gen never really had that problem. I have an 01 sh,it does durn oil somewhat,it'd lime to give it a full rebuild.
question; my prelude came with a cruise control, sunroof and fog light switch on the control panel, where is the dash light dial??
please let me know,thanks
Did you have a different muffler installed to give it that solid bass sound?
