  • Schmincke's Medium W allows oil colours to be mixed with water instead of with turpentine and linseed oil. Brushes and painting tools that have been used with Medium W mixed oils can be cleaned with soap and water. Medium W should be mixed with oil paints in a 1 part medium to 2 parts oil ratio using a palette knife or a spatula. Water can then be added to the mixture to thin the paint and, if necessary, more Medium W.
Medium W increases the gloss and transparency of paints and harmonises drying process. This odourless, low solvent additive will reduce the mess and smell of oil painting. When mixed with oils and water the alkyd resin in Medium W will undergo a shift in colour, however oils will be restored to their original brilliance and vibrancy on drying.

This technique would only be used if you wish to continue painting on a old painting that has dried, applying a thin coat with a brush waiting 1-2 min and then whipping of excess, this allows the painting to rehydrate and allows the new paint to bind to the old, if you wish to even out the shiny and dull areas you would want to use the lacquers that are recommended for aqua oil paints and apply a final finish no sooner then 6 months to allow painting to cure completely. This are oil paints and to insure your hard work last following a process that is archival is best as these methods have been tried and tested for longevity! Hope i was helpful,

Are you sure you replied to the correct video? this video is about transforming traditional oil paints into water mixable oilpaints

@@enjoylife3000 They may have made an error in replying to the video and not the OP directly and intended to address a remark by bagi p which was “ I am experimenting with a little water using a conventional medium such as Linseed Petroleum ... but I am a bit worried about durability.” Just a guess on my part however, but this was my take on it.

Does this help to improve durability when mixing oil paints? I am experimenting with a little water using a conventional medium such as Linseed Petroleum ... but I am a bit worried about durability. There may be strange sentences that translate into English as a translator.

But they are still not watercolors, so i think maybe you used too much water to thin it.

DON'T zoom out when applying the paint to the panel. That's the most important part!!!! Utterly pointless and a waste of a good opportunity to show people trying to paint with diluted oil paint how to do it solvent free.
